The Thames Barrier is one of the world's largest moveable flood barriers located on

the River Thames in South East London.

It was completed in 1982 to protect the capital from tidal surges and flooding.

The barrier spans 520 metres across the river and consists of 10 steel gates, each as high

as a 5 storey building.

When a high tide or storm surge is predicted, the gates rotate upwards from the riverbed

to block the flow of water.

It has been used over 200 times since opening and plays a crucial role in defending over

1.4 million people, key infrastructure and billions of pounds worth of property.

With sea levels rising due to climate change, the barrier is expected to remain effective
