00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London.
00:05The Globe Theatre in London was originally built in 1599 by William Shakespeare's playing
00:10company The Lord Chamberlain's Men. It became one of the most famous venues for his plays
00:15including Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. The theatre was a circular open-air structure
00:21with a thatched roof over the seating areas, and a yard where groundlings could watch for
00:26just a penny. In 1613, it famously burned down during a performance when a stage cannon misfired.
00:35It was rebuilt in 1614, demolished in 1644, and gone for centuries until American actor
00:42Sam Wanamaker led the project to rebuild it near its original site. The Modern Globe opened
00:49in 1997, offering authentic Elizabethan-style productions and tours.
