00:00Good afternoon. Welcome to our latest weather update from the Met Office.
00:04So thunderstorms are on the cards for many of us this afternoon, all thanks to an area of low pressure
00:08that's been picked up by a fairly active jet stream, pushing that area of low pressure across the UK
00:13through the rest of Saturday and into the start of Sunday.
00:16See those tightly packed isobars indicating the strong blustery winds that we're going to be seeing
00:20with other areas of low pressure being picked up by further strands of that jet stream,
00:24waiting out in the Atlantic to bring further changeable conditions as we head into the new working week.
00:31Back to the rest of this afternoon though, and across England and Wales we have got a yellow thunderstorm warning in force,
00:36valid until 6pm this evening, and it's here where we're going to see the heaviest showers,
00:41a risk of thunder, hail and lightning, perhaps seeing up to 30, 35mm of rain across a couple of hours,
00:47across much of England and Wales.
00:49Across the north there will still be some heavy downpours too, particularly northeastern parts of England,
00:52eastern parts of Scotland, the odd rumble of thunder mixed in here too.
00:56But across parts of Northern Ireland, western parts of Scotland, there will be one or two isolated showers,
01:01but perhaps a little bit more in the way of sunshine here.
01:04There will be some strong blustery winds in around those showers as well.
01:07Across the south coast we could see gusts up to 30, 35, perhaps even 40 miles an hour,
01:11so that will take the edge off the temperatures, which are a little cooler than we've seen on recent days,
01:1517, 18 degrees as a max in the south and only 13 or 14 degrees across much of Scotland.
01:21Then as we head through Saturday evening, we'll still continue to see those heavy thundery showers
01:27across the south and southeast for a time, but pushing our way offshore into parts of the continent
01:31as we head overnight Saturday and into the start of Sunday.
01:35One or two showers lingering across northern and eastern parts of the country
01:38as we head into the early hours of the morning.
01:40For most of us though, it will be turning much drier from the west into the early hours of Sunday morning,
01:44before another swathe of showers arrives across parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland to start on Sunday.
01:50It will be turning a little chilly where we see those clear skies, particularly across the northern half of the country,
01:55temperatures around five or six degrees.
01:57But further south, particularly in the towns and cities, we'll be holding up into the high single figures,
02:01perhaps even locally into the low double figures in places.
02:04But it does mean a bit of a brighter start on Sunday compared to what we saw on Saturday,
02:08particularly across much of England and Wales.
02:10There will be some early morning sunshine.
02:12Once any of those showers clear eastwards across the east coast as well, there will be some sunshine here.
02:16But the showers that we see across parts of Northern Ireland spread their way eastwards
02:20into northern parts of England, southern parts of Scotland and across much of England and Wales
02:24through the afternoon.
02:25In that afternoon sunshine, we'll see some showers bubbling up too,
02:28though these generally lighter and a little more scattered than what we saw on Saturday.
02:32Feeling a little more pleasant in the sunshine on Sunday, highs of 19 or 20 degrees in the south,
02:37so up a touch compared to Saturday.
02:39But still in the north, temperatures a little below average, only 14 or 15 degrees here,
02:44and still quite blustery across the west as we go through the afternoon.
02:48Then as we go through the rest of Sunday afternoon and overnight,
02:51we still continue to see those showers across the northern half of the country.
02:55Again, one or two of these could be heavy in places, but for much of England and Wales,
02:59or the southern half of England anyway, it'll be turning a little drier overnight Sunday
03:02and into the start of Monday.
03:04But that north-south split sets us up into the new working week with some changeable conditions on the cards,
03:09some further showers, some longer spells of rain,
03:11but perhaps turning a little warmer through the second half of the week.
