03 August - National weather forecast presented by Ellie Glaisyer.

00:00Good evening. Welcome to your latest weather update from the Met Office. Storm Floris is
00:05on the way with an amber weather warning issued for unseasonably strong winds across the northern
00:10half of the country. It's picked up by this very active jet stream through Sunday night
00:15and into the start of Monday, where it undergoes rapid deepening. It's that squeeze in the
00:19isobars on the southern flank of the low that indicates those strongest winds throughout
00:23much of Monday. It then eventually moves its way northeastwards into parts of Scandinavia
00:28with an air of high pressure building out eventually across the southwest. But still
00:32seeing those tightly packed isobars on Tuesday, indicating another fairly windy day, though
00:37not quite as windy as Monday. So let's take a closer look at those wind speeds in more
00:43detail. Those winds picking up as we go through Monday morning. We'll see the first peak of
00:47the winds across western parts of Scotland during the morning. We could see gusts here
00:51of 80, 85, potentially even 90 miles an hour. And even further south, across northern parts
00:56of England and Northern Ireland, we could see gusts up to 70 miles an hour at the coasts.
01:00As it's a bank holiday in Scotland, that's likely to lead to some impacts, lots of people
01:04out and about and travelling, as well as some trees in full leaf that could lead to some
01:08localised flooding due to blocked drains. We then see the second peak of winds across
01:13the north coast of Aberdeenshire as we go through Monday afternoon and evening, where
01:16once again we could see wind gusts up to 80, 85, potentially even 90 miles an hour. So
01:22some further impacts are likely here. The winds will gradually start to ease as we go into
01:27Tuesday morning, but it will still be a windy start to the day on Tuesday.
01:32Back to the rest of Sunday, though, and any rain that we've seen across the south of the
01:36country eventually pushes offshore, leaving generally a dry and clear start to the evening
01:40for many of us. But it's all eyes out towards the northwest as we see storm florist arriving,
01:46bringing some really quite heavy rainfall to parts of Northern Ireland and then later into
01:50western parts of Scotland into the early hours of Monday morning. It'll generally stay a little
01:55bit drier further south, but there'll still be quite a lot of cloud around and that leads
01:59to quite a mild night across the board, temperatures in the low or mid-teens for most of us and
02:04perhaps feeling quite humid in places too. So it's going to be a very wet and quite windy
02:10start to the day on Monday morning across the north. Those winds quickly picking up across
02:15western parts of Scotland, where we'll see that peak in those wind speeds of 80, 85,
02:19potentially 90 miles an hour, with that amber weather warning coming into force at 10am.
02:24The weather front associated with the storm eventually pushes its way south and eastwards,
02:28so almost anywhere we'll see a brief spell of some heavy rain, but it's across the northwest
02:32that we continue to see outbreaks of heavy rain as we go in towards the afternoon. Those winds continue
02:38to pick up across the north coast of Aberdeenshire, where once again we could see gusts of 80, 85,
02:43potentially 90 miles an hour and it will still be a windy day across the southern half of the country,
02:48though not quite as windy as further north. Despite any sunshine that we might see through
02:53the afternoon and temperatures being a little above average across the south, it will definitely be
02:58feeling cooler than it has done recently and feeling really quite unpleasant across much of
03:03Scotland and northern England, Northern Ireland too. Potentially feeling just a little milder and
03:08perhaps a little muggy as well, a little humid across the very far southeast if you're stuck underneath that
03:13cloud and rain. That cloud and rain that we do see across the very far southeast eventually pushes
03:18its way offshore, so some late sunshine for much of England and Wales, but heavy rain and blustery
03:23showers do continue across much of Scotland as those winds gradually start to ease through Monday
03:28evening and later into the early hours of Tuesday morning. But plenty of blustery showers still feeding
03:33in on that very brisk northwesterly wind. Some of these could be heavy, perhaps even the odd rumble of thunder
03:39possible mixed in there. With that very brisk northwesterly wind, it means it's quite a bit
03:44fresher overnight Monday into the start of Tuesday. Towns and cities holding up into the double figures,
03:50but some rural spots could be dropping a little lower than that. So a bit of a fresher start to
03:54the day on Tuesday compared to Monday morning. A bright start as well for much of England and
03:59Wales. Plenty of sunshine on offer, the best of any prolonged sunshine likely here throughout the
04:04afternoon, but plenty of blustery showers still feeding in on that very brisk northwesterly wind
04:10across much of northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland too. And once again, these could
04:13be heavy with some hail and thunder mixed in. With that northwesterly wind, temperatures will be much
04:19closer to average on Tuesday, so feeling quite fresh if you are if you are in that breeze. But further south
04:24where you do see that sunshine, it will still be feeling pleasantly warm with highs of 22 or 23 degrees.
