00:02:08Saturday, Saturday night's all right.
00:02:18Tonight, a slice of ring history as America's Fight Night welcomes you to downtown Phoenix.
00:02:24Yes, the Valley of the Sun is hosting its first-ever heavyweight championship fight,
00:02:28and it will take place in the most unique setting as you look down on Chase Field,
00:02:33home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
00:02:35And this is one of Major League Baseball's most recognizable landmarks
00:02:39as Showtime Championship Boxing celebrates its 20th anniversary from this home-run hitter's paradise.
00:02:46It's only fitting as an American slugger reaches for stardom in a division devoid of an American champion.
00:02:52It's Fight Night in Phoenix.
00:02:54In our main event, Shannon Briggs vows to bring the belt back to Brooklyn,
00:03:00but Sergei Lehovich, one of four heavyweight champions born in Eastern Europe, stands in his way.
00:03:04Lehovich versus Briggs for the WBO heavyweight crown.
00:03:08And for openers, the Baby Bull undefeated crowd-pleasing Juan Diaz will put his WBA lightweight belt on the line
00:03:14against unheralded Fernando Angulo.
00:03:19Hello again, everybody. Steve Albert from Phoenix.
00:03:22Much has been made about the fact that all four heavyweight titleists hail from the former Soviet Union,
00:03:27but WBC champ Oleg Moskiev is an American citizen.
00:03:31IBF champ Vladimir Klitschko has relocated to New York City.
00:03:35And tonight, Sergei Lehovich, who hopes to become an American citizen someday,
00:03:39makes his first title defense here in his adopted hometown of Phoenix.
00:03:44Lehovich, fresh off his impressive win to dethrone Lehman Brewster,
00:03:48and his newfound status reminds us that the American dream isn't only for Americans.
00:03:54And with that, let me bring on my ringside partner, Al Bernstein.
00:03:56And Al, were you surprised by Lehovich's performance against Brewster,
00:03:59particularly after a 16-month layoff?
00:04:01Well, in some ways, yes, but the fact of the matter is he had shown some sparks of excellence
00:04:06in that fight 16 months earlier against Dominic Gwynn.
00:04:09Against Brewster, he fought with great grit and determination,
00:04:12but also, Steve, a lot of skill as well.
00:04:15And that 16-month layoff should have made that much harder, to be sure.
00:04:19And part of the reason why all of that worked out was the corner work of trainer Kenny Weldon
00:04:25here collecting his thoughts along with Sergei for tonight's challenge.
00:04:29Now, seldom do you see corner work that includes passion to motivate,
00:04:33but still is totally grounded in important strategic advice.
00:04:38And against Brewster, Weldon would not let his fighter wander from their game plan.
00:04:47You've got to get your left hand up.
00:04:50He's still around with one punch like that.
00:04:53Okay?
00:04:53Keep your left hand up.
00:04:55The jab is working good.
00:04:57Up there to the left, up the right hand.
00:04:59He's trying to end it here.
00:05:00Next time I see you on the ropes like that, I swear I'll throw the stool at you.
00:05:05What are you doing here?
00:05:06Got Brewster taking advantage.
00:05:08Nails him on the right and a left hand.
00:05:10He's down.
00:05:11The accumulative effect put him down to an eight.
00:05:14Three!
00:05:15Why won't you listen to me?
00:05:16Why won't you listen to me?
00:05:18Listen for the championship of the world.
00:05:21And you know what?
00:05:22You ain't listening to me.
00:05:23Get out there and box.
00:05:27Big right hand up on the top by the hovets.
00:05:29To the body by the hovets.
00:05:31The hovets firing bombs to the body.
00:05:34Brewster hangs tough.
00:05:37If you think that you can stand toe-to-toe with this guy and win this fight, you're wrong.
00:05:45These are bombs by Brewster.
00:05:47I've asked you all night long to get your left hand up.
00:05:51You ain't got it up yet.
00:05:53Get your hands up and start boxing.
00:05:55And this guy is dead.
00:05:58This fight is won with a jab.
00:06:00You understand?
00:06:01Make sure you step when you jab.
00:06:03You'll bust him up.
00:06:04Beautiful.
00:06:05Doubling up on the jab by the hovets.
00:06:08And he's doing exactly what Kenny Weldon told him to do while Brewster's trying to end it on one punch.
00:06:13Don't go out there.
00:06:14Don't get in a fight this round.
00:06:17He's got to knock you out to win.
00:06:20The probing range fighting jab by the hovets.
00:06:23Just keeping it in the face of Brewster.
00:06:26Keeping him off balance.
00:06:27Keeping him out of his rhythms.
00:06:29And we may hear a replay of some of those Weldon comments because tonight's opponent, Shannon Briggs, would like Lehovich to engage in a firefight as he sometimes did against Lehman Brewster.
00:06:53Now, Briggs has waged a public psychological campaign of blistering personal attacks that are directed at Lehovich.
00:07:00And that's to get him riled up enough to battle him in the trenches.
00:07:03So, we'll see if it all works.
00:07:05Well, Al, as you know, Brewster tried to slug with Lehovich and it didn't work.
00:07:09Can Briggs be successful with that same strategy?
00:07:12Well, you know, we have to say that Lehovich was hurt in the Brewster fight.
00:07:15In fact, was down.
00:07:16And in 2002, Maurice Harris stopped Lehovich.
00:07:19So, he can be stopped.
00:07:21I see this fight, honestly, as almost a replay of a fight that Shannon Briggs had for the World Championship before.
00:07:28And that is against Lennox Lewis.
00:07:29It was a wild brawl with multiple knockdowns.
00:07:32A lot of ebbs and flows.
00:07:33And that's what I see tonight.
00:07:34I think there's going to be a barn burner.
00:07:36All right, Al.
00:07:36The overriding feeling is that Briggs needs a knockout to win.
00:07:40So, it could very well be fireworks night at Chase Field in our main event later tonight.
00:07:45First up from Phoenix, though, we present our co-feature as undefeated bruiser Juan Diaz is set to defend his WBA lightweight title against South American Fernando Angulo.
00:07:59This is more than the Baby Bulls' fifth title defense.
00:08:01It's an opportunity to command the division's spotlight.
00:08:05Well, Al, anyone who's seen Juan Diaz in action knows of his relentless punching at his high work rate.
00:08:12Angulo, on the other hand, is somewhat of a mystery man to the public in the ring.
00:08:16That's for sure.
00:08:16And there's a good reason for that.
00:08:17This is his first fight here in the United States.
00:08:20And, in fact, it's his first fight outside of South America.
00:08:23And Steve and I were both very impressed when we got to watch video of Angulo in action.
00:08:29He is an aggressive, imaginative fighter who will complement the high-energy approach of Diaz.
00:08:34And make no mistake, the 23-year-old champion, Juan Diaz, is all about frenetic activity.
00:08:44Diaz overwhelms opponents with combinations that come at a hectic pace.
00:08:49Expect more of same tonight.
00:08:50They've worked hard on his defense and against a very active Fernando Angulo, who need those skills, too.
00:08:57Diaz is dedicated to body work, especially digging hooks to the body.
00:09:02The Diaz hook starts with him lowering his head to avoid the jab.
00:09:09He eyes the target, and he'll get good leverage to throw the hook to the body.
00:09:15And to show his commitment to making this work after he's done it once, he quickly resets and then does it all over again.
00:09:24You'll see a lot of this tonight.
00:09:25A weapon that will counteract what we just saw from Diaz is a good uppercut, and Angulo has one.
00:09:36But sometimes he leads off with that punch from the outside.
00:09:40If he does, he'll get countered.
00:09:41Angulo is active and creative with his combinations, but he often loops his punches.
00:09:45And now we're set for two fighters who couldn't come from more different worlds.
00:09:55Fernando Angulo, born near the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador.
00:09:59He never knew his father.
00:10:00He thinks he was killed.
00:10:02He was estranged from his mother, and he lived with an uncle who physically abused him.
00:10:06So he fled to the jungle at age seven, a nine-year journey of survival.
00:10:11When he wasn't subsisting alone on bugs, worms, and snakes surrounded by wild animals,
00:10:17he'd go into town begging for food, sleeping in the streets.
00:10:22And, folks, this was not a reality show.
00:10:24This was real-life drama.
00:10:26And, interestingly, Al Angulo considers his childhood embarrassing.
00:10:29Yet, many would consider it a triumph to overcome child abuse, abject poverty, and total isolation.
00:10:37And tonight, here he is fighting for a world title.
00:10:39Well, based upon nothing that happens tonight is going to face him.
00:10:42You know, he's stablemates with Carlos Baldomir.
00:10:44He's the same manager as Baldomir.
00:10:46And he believes he can pull the kind of upset that Baldomir did against Zab Judy.
00:10:51He's committed to that.
00:10:52And let me tell you, this guy's a good fighter.
00:10:54That night, Baldomir was a 16-1 underdog.
00:10:57But at least people knew who he was.
00:11:00He was rated number one at the time.
00:11:01This guy is completely unknown.
00:11:03And how do you go from surviving in the jungle, living each day in fear and in hunger,
00:11:07to a career in boxing?
00:11:08He said when he was 16, he came upon a trainer in town.
00:11:12He saw a film about Muhammad Ali, and it aroused his interest.
00:11:17He told us he always knew he was going to be a world champ someday, win or lose tonight.
00:11:21Truly an astonishing rags-to-riches story.
00:11:27In dramatic contrast, the champion, Juan Diaz, who always had the support of a loving, nurturing
00:11:38family, a warm home, blessed with a good education, worked very hard to make the most of his opportunities,
00:11:45graduated high school with a 3.85 grade point average, a year and a half away from college
00:11:52graduation, and a degree in government from the University of Houston with plans to go
00:11:57to law school.
00:11:59We watched Diaz grow up here on Showtime, Al, emerging from the shadow of 2,000 Olympians
00:12:04and stablemates Pancito Bajardo and Rocky Juarez.
00:12:06We had a premonition that he was going to be the one to bust out.
00:12:13There was something very special about this young man, and he has not disappointed.
00:12:16No, and he doesn't want to tonight, and he is very, very intent on not looking past Angulo.
00:12:22He watched tapes of him.
00:12:23He said these are exactly the kind of fights you can stub your toe on and divert your career.
00:12:28He said that will not happen tonight.
00:12:31A polite, soft-spoken, refreshingly humble guy, and how many world champions do you know
00:12:37who still live at home with their parents?
00:12:41And there they are, Olivia and Fidencio.
00:12:44He told us, as Bob said, she'd throw me out of the house if I wasn't working.
00:12:48But he has a strict curfew enforced by his dad, and it's lights out at 10 o'clock.
00:12:55She gets very emotional, doesn't she?
00:12:56Yeah, boy, you can see it etched on her face already.
00:12:59You can see the emotion.
00:13:01She just can't watch him fight.
00:13:02Olivia gets extremely nervous watching one fight.
00:13:07Boy, she can barely walk, even when he's, look, when he's walking into the ring.
00:13:13And then when the fight actually starts, she just has her face buried in a hanky and in her hands.
00:13:21And you had a great question, you know, at the fighter meeting.
00:13:24Which would he get more satisfaction out of, winning a world title and graduating from college?
00:13:28Yeah, and both he and Willie Savannah said it would be one of the most special days of their lives
00:13:32when he graduates from college, and that'll happen within the next year and a half.
00:13:35First one in his family to do it.
00:13:38All right, with that, let's check the numbers, Al, as we go to the tale of the Tate.
00:13:42Diaz fighting pro almost six and a half years, yet he's only 23, two years younger than Angulo.
00:13:47Diaz a little taller, but Angulo with the slight edge in reach at yesterday's weigh-in.
00:13:52Both came in just under the limit.
00:13:54And the key unified rules, no standing eight count.
00:13:57No three knockdown rule.
00:13:58A fighter can't be saved by the bell in any round.
00:14:00If an accidental headbutt causes a fight to end within four rounds, it's a no decision.
00:14:04After four, they go to the cards.
00:14:06If a punch causes a cut and the injured fighter can't continue, he loses by TKO.
00:14:11And, Al, they've waived the infield fly rule.
00:14:15Thanks for that baseball reference.
00:14:17Anytime.
00:14:17So here at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, where the ring is right over the pitcher's mound,
00:14:22it'll be Juan Diaz versus Fernando Angulo for the WBA lightweight championship.
00:14:27We get the formal introductions from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon, Jr.

00:15:05Introducing it this time, our three judges scoring this bout from ringside.
00:15:11From West Covina, California, Raul Cais, Sr.
00:15:14From Tucson, Arizona, Gerald Maltz.
00:15:18And from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Luis Pabon.
00:15:23Introducing to you our third man of the ring, the referee in charge,
00:15:26working this his eighth world title bout, Raul Cais, Jr.
00:15:31All right, fans, here we go.
00:15:3512 rounds of boxing for the WBA Lightweight Championship of the World.
00:15:44Introducing to you first the challenger on my left,
00:15:47fighting out of the blue corner, wearing black trunks with white trim,
00:15:51fighting out of Caracas, Venezuela, by way of sucumbio, Ecuador.
00:15:56He weighed in at ready 134 pounds with 13 straight victories.
00:16:03His record stands at 18 wins, three losses with 12 wins coming by way of knockout.
00:16:10Ladies and gentlemen, here is the WBA number 11 lightweight contender.
00:16:15Please welcome the challenger, Fernando La Fiera Angulo.
00:16:27And his opponent across the ring, the defending world champion on my right,
00:16:32fighting out of the red corner, wearing blue trunks,
00:16:35fighting out of Houston, Texas, by way of Huizuco Guerrero, Mexico.
00:16:41He weighed in the same as his opponent, 134 pounds.
00:16:46He is undefeated in his campaign in the ring with 30 wins, no losses,
00:16:5115 wins coming by way of knockout.
00:16:55Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, making the fifth defense of his title,
00:16:58here is the WBA lightweight champion of the world.
00:17:03Introducing Juan Baby Bull Diaz.
00:17:09And once again, here's our referee in charge, Raukais Jr., now to give instructions.
00:17:20Mouthpiece.
00:17:30Mouthpiece, please.
00:17:34Okay, gentlemen, here are the legal punches.
00:17:41Here on up, let's have a good, clean fight.
00:17:45Good luck to both of you.
00:17:47Go to the corner.
00:17:48Will the unbeaten champion have his way, or will an unknown challenger become an overnight star for all the hard work he puts in?
00:18:00Juan Diaz cannot get that chiseled look, but he's always in shape to bring it.
00:18:05As easygoing as they come, transforms into a ferocious high-volume pressure fighter.
00:18:10Angulo's fight for survival as a youngster provided him the kind of fortitude needed to reach this plateau.
00:18:16And as Al pointed out, you'd imagine he would not be awestruck by the moment or intimidated by the setting.
00:18:23But be sure that Diaz cannot take this guy lightly, and he knows that better than anyone.
00:18:29If there's anyone who is used to doing homework, whether it's about another fighter or about government and law in school, it's Juan Diaz.
00:18:39Diaz usually gets right to it, tenacious from the start, dicks to the body.
00:18:43Not a huge one-punch guy.
00:18:46Relies more on the accumulative effect.
00:18:48Really lets his hands go.
00:18:50Not unusual to see three-four punch combinations from Diaz in the powder blue trunks.
00:18:54He's the champion.
00:18:56Angulo, a tough, no-nonsense guy, a more deliberate starter, but doesn't take that long to rev up.
00:19:03He's in the black trunks with the white trim.
00:19:05He may lack some polish, but a strong, hard puncher, Al.
00:19:09Very aggressive, in-your-face kind of guy.
00:19:11Early in this fight, very important.
00:19:15Angulo, not a strong starter, and Diaz knows this, and Diaz is pressuring him from the get-go.
00:19:21This is going to be an action fight.
00:19:22Make no mistake about it.
00:19:23And Angulo, very wild and sometimes reckless, leaving himself open.
00:19:28Punches wide at times, which could provide Diaz with the openings he needs.
00:19:35But he is strong and awkward, which Diaz says are dangerous characteristics.
00:19:42He says Angulo kind of reminded him, looking at tapes of Ricardo Mayorga.
00:19:45Angulo's best weapons, the overhand right, and as Al alluded to earlier on, the key is the nasty uppercut.
00:19:55And that could be big if Diaz leans in.
00:19:57A factor also here, Al, could be Angulo's conditioning in light of an 11-month layoff, he says, due to personal travel.
00:20:14You know, early in this fight, and that's another reason why Diaz wants to get on, Diaz's jab so far in this match has been very good.
00:20:22These are dangerous times for Angulo.
00:20:24Angulo, he's just not comfortable in the first couple rounds.
00:20:28Once he gets his sea legs, he's a much better fighter.
00:20:30But Diaz having a pretty good first round here.
00:20:34Diaz has what's known in old boxing parlance as an educated jab.
00:20:39Very effective.
00:20:41It's a key to his arsenal.
00:20:42There's that right uppercut attempt that we alluded to by Angulo, but fell far short.
00:20:48You know, Angulo is using his jab effectively to try and keep Diaz off.
00:20:51It's just not working as well as it might.
00:20:53But he's making an effort to do the right thing.
00:20:57Well, definitely a huge step up in classic competition for Angulo.
00:21:02But he's game, and he just landed with the right hand.
00:21:05Nice counterpunching.
00:21:05And we saw momentarily that uppercut from Angulo, which could be such an important weapon.
00:21:10There's a left hook upstairs by Diaz.
00:21:13Diaz, like his nickname, the Baby Bull, rushes in, but he does it more wisely now.
00:21:21He doesn't do it indiscriminately as he used to when he first started out.
00:21:35Look, everything is good.
00:21:36Now listen, look, this guy, all he's trying to do is box your knife.
00:21:41He's just trying to do something a little bit different there, okay?
00:21:43Now look, he ain't used to that, so he ain't going to be able to keep doing it, all right?
00:21:47But look, don't follow him.
00:21:49Step over.
00:21:50He's running this way, just step over this way.
00:21:52Force him to go that way, all right?
00:21:54Now look, you got him when you're going that way, all right?
00:21:57He's all yours right there, baby, okay?
00:21:59Everything is fine, but you got to keep going behind the jab.
00:22:02Add your face to it, all right?
00:22:04When he's moving him out, add your face to it.
00:22:06Then when he throw the jab, shoot him right here, right over the top.
00:22:08But he don't like it in the body there, okay?
00:22:10He hate that body shot.
00:22:13Everything is good, though, baby.
00:22:14Everything is good.
00:22:16Keep working like that, all right?
00:22:17I got the stool.
00:22:20Former junior welterweight contender Ronnie Shields, long-time trainer of Juan Diaz, set
00:22:28for round two.
00:22:29Diaz, 30-0 with 15 knockouts.
00:22:32Let's go, let's go.
00:22:33A little delay in getting the mouthpiece.
00:22:36In for Angulo.
00:22:38People talk about Juan Diaz not being a big knockout puncher, and is that a detriment to
00:22:43his marketing, et cetera?
00:22:44I say no, because I think boxing fans want to see action in fights, and that's what Juan
00:22:49Diaz creates, and this fight is a perfect example.
00:22:53Unrelenting, hard-digging puncher to the body, usually the case when you look at Juan Diaz.
00:23:02So fundamentally sound, elbows in, gloves high, protecting his face.
00:23:07Good body shots there by Diaz.
00:23:09Just keeps stalking his opponent.
00:23:13A moment ago, Angulo threw that uppercut from very far out, and it's something he needs
00:23:18not to do, because he'll be countered by a big left hook by Diaz.
00:23:22Diaz trying to incorporate more boxing into his repertoire.
00:23:27Doesn't want to be known as a brawler.
00:23:30More side-to-side jabbing, trying to keep his distance a little better and not get hit as
00:23:34much.
00:23:34Also, the defense they've worked on, some of the evidence tonight, keeping his hands
00:23:38up, slipping a little bit more so far, though it's very early in this fight.
00:23:44Diaz leaping in with that left hook attempt.
00:23:47That missed everything.
00:23:48And the jab by Angulo, nice.
00:23:50Even if Angulo gives away these first couple of rounds, which looks like it might be happening.
00:23:57Nice chopping right by Diaz.
00:23:59Don't be misled, because he just doesn't do well in the first couple rounds.
00:24:03He picks up the beat starting in round three, four, and five.
00:24:08Diaz three months shy of qualifying for the 2000 Mexican Olympic team.
00:24:12Turned pro at age 16 south of the border, and goes on to become WBA lightweight champion
00:24:18at the age of 20.
00:24:23So a real child prodigy in the world of boxing.
00:24:26Hard body shot, and Raul Caillis is keep the punches up.
00:24:31That was borderline by Diaz.
00:24:33It's that strong jab again by Diaz.
00:24:36Ronnie Shields has got to be happy about that.
00:24:37He's stepping in with that punch, and it's very, very effective.
00:24:42Big miss by Angulo, and a countering left hook upstairs by Diaz.
00:24:47Diaz will make you pay if you miss.
00:24:52Now he's backing Angulo up.
00:24:56Diaz missing with the right.
00:25:03Angulo continues to backpedal.
00:25:05He's not used to this.
00:25:06He'd rather come forward, but the pressure of Diaz is making him go back,
00:25:12and at some point, he will engage Diaz.
00:25:14Make no mistake about it.
00:25:17Angulo's won 13 in a row.
00:25:18Has a loss since 0-2.
00:25:20But some good guys in South America, but not in there with world-class competition like this.
00:25:26Not even close.
00:25:27Five seconds.
00:25:28Five seconds, gentlemen.
00:25:31When you go break, hasta para atrás, ¿ok?
00:25:36Felix de Jesus, our translator.
00:25:40Good round.
00:25:47Here, here's some water.
00:25:48Throw the water.
00:25:54Throw it out.
00:25:55Throw it out.
00:25:55Spit it out.
00:25:57Okay.
00:25:58Breathe.
00:25:59Breathe deeply.
00:26:00Breathe deeply.
00:26:02Come on.
00:26:02Breathe deeply.
00:26:09Diaz was able to get this very nice right hand in,
00:26:12and that momentarily wobbled his opponent,
00:26:17and the body work by Diaz,
00:26:19always an important staple of what he does.
00:26:22We talked about it in the Keys before.
00:26:23Look how he dips down and cranks up that left hook.
00:26:26I mean, he's committed to that,
00:26:28and it makes a big difference.
00:26:32Juan Diaz, a naturally aggressive left hooker with fast hands,
00:26:36and he just eventually gets to you.
00:26:38He wears you down.
00:26:39He slows you down with a high work rate,
00:26:41very busy with his hands.
00:26:44The irony, the odd thing about Angulo,
00:26:45as we talked about his level of competition,
00:26:47he actually fought tougher people in 2004 and 2003.
00:26:53In 2005, he fought only four fights,
00:26:56and his opponents had a combined record of 57 and 39,
00:26:59and then he had that 11-month layoff,
00:27:01so he had tougher competition earlier in his career.
00:27:04So he's stepping up from the recent people he's fought.
00:27:07Nice right hand of the temple by Juan Diaz.
00:27:10Like stablemate Carlos Baltimore,
00:27:13Angulo, as you said, he got off to a rough start,
00:27:16and then when he changed management team and trainers,
00:27:19he had higher-skilled trainers,
00:27:21he started to improve.
00:27:22You saw it in the ring record.
00:27:23And he's had some impressive wins against guys like Jorge Noriega,
00:27:29Santos Ferrebo-Yedo, and Eloy Rojas.
00:27:33Wow, nice.
00:27:34Nice left hand, but...
00:27:35Oh, this extreme.
00:27:36And Angulo is going back at him.
00:27:39A lot of enthusiastic fans.
00:27:41You can hear one of the Diaz routers being our third commentator.
00:27:45And Angulo's game, that's for sure.
00:27:47Punch, punch.
00:27:48He stands right in and trades with Diaz,
00:27:51and he lets his hands go upstairs and then to the body.
00:27:54Punch, punch.
00:27:55Stop.
00:27:56Okay, there you go.
00:27:56There you go.
00:27:57There you go.
00:27:57Max.
00:28:00And Angulo is starting to make the uppercut work from time to time,
00:28:04and you see this is round three,
00:28:05when he normally wakes up and starts to do some really good work,
00:28:08and he's doing it.
00:28:10Not everything's landing, though.
00:28:11The Diaz defense, as we pointed out,
00:28:14better than it used to be.
00:28:15The Diaz defense, as we pointed out,
00:28:17and he's doing it right in and out of the way.
00:28:19He's doing it right in and out of the way.
00:28:20Diaz coming forward.
00:28:21Big left hook to the chin by Diaz,
00:28:24and Angulo's got a good chin right there,
00:28:26and he's fighting back.
00:28:28This is just what we thought this would be.
00:28:31Some wild exchanges here.
00:28:33There's a left hook that was blocked by the glove of Diaz.
00:28:36Diaz missing with the right.
00:28:38He was looking for lights out there.
00:28:39That was a home run.
00:28:40And the looping punches of Angulo,
00:28:44that's the problem.
00:28:46You know, some of those are not straight enough,
00:28:48and Angulo is paying the price occasionally for that.
00:28:52These are hard shots to the body now by Angulo.
00:28:55But now Diaz comes right back,
00:28:57pushing Angulo to the corner.
00:28:59But Angulo throws.
00:29:01Stop.
00:29:01This is going to be fun.
00:29:03And I have a feeling we might get 12 rounds of this.
00:29:07We really thought, looking at tapes of Angulo,
00:29:10that he may not necessarily come out with a W,
00:29:13but he's going to give Diaz his money's worth,
00:29:16and this crowd his money's worth.
00:29:19This is a very close round here in round three.
00:29:22Angulo has done a lot of good work.
00:29:24So has Diaz.
00:29:25It's a very tough one to score.
00:29:27Final seconds of round three.
00:29:29Big finish there by Juan Diaz.
00:29:46Give me the water.
00:29:47Give me the water.
00:29:48Breathe.
00:29:52Want me to take off the mouthpiece?
00:29:54Okay, wash it.
00:29:55Wash the mouthpiece.
00:29:56You're exchanging too quickly.
00:29:59Don't exchange just yet.
00:30:01Let's give him another round before we start exchanging.
00:30:05Interesting advice in that corner.
00:30:06Diaz landing this left hook and pressuring Angulo
00:30:10and getting in a couple of very, very good left hooks.
00:30:13And the pressure of Diaz, of course, is the thing to behold.
00:30:17Here's the uppercut that lands on the inside.
00:30:19Split the gloves of Diaz.
00:30:21Angulo has a very good uppercut,
00:30:23and then he works the body in there.
00:30:24It was a spirited end of the round.
00:30:29Angulo throwing wider punches,
00:30:32and that's why he's being countered a little bit
00:30:33in the inside by Diaz,
00:30:35especially with that left hook.
00:30:36The Diaz left hook to the head
00:30:37worked better, Steve, than it has it even in recent fights.
00:30:41And now we begin round four.
00:30:42Let's see if Diaz picks up where he left off.
00:30:45He really pressured Angulo at the end of the round,
00:30:48and he picks right up.
00:30:49But back comes Angulo,
00:30:50winging away, just throwing.
00:30:52Stop.
00:30:53Here we go.
00:30:53Break, step back.
00:30:54Let him go.
00:30:54Well, his nickname is the wild animal.
00:30:57And he said that hits him both inside and out
00:30:59on the ring sometime, and we can see it.
00:31:02Now Angulo steps back.
00:31:04Tries to be a little bit more measuring.
00:31:10When, if this fight goes to distance,
00:31:13and if it is close,
00:31:13round three is one that they may look back on.
00:31:16A pivotal round, very tough one to score.
00:31:18Angulo, 18 and 3, 12 knockouts,
00:31:24fighting pro almost seven years.
00:31:26At 25 amateur fights, he said,
00:31:28oh, the heck with the amateurs.
00:31:29I've got to make some money.
00:31:31Stop.
00:31:31Break.
00:31:32Let him go.
00:31:32Let him go.
00:31:33Here we go.
00:31:33Let him go.
00:31:34Let him go.
00:31:34Let him go.
00:31:34He's only been down one time in 21 pro fights.
00:31:38Back in 0-2, his lone TKO loss versus a fighter named Robert Rojas.
00:31:43You know, they, it was interesting.
00:31:47I thought in between rounds when they talked to Angulo
00:31:51and they pointed out that it was a little too early to get in these firefights.
00:31:55I think they're looking to round five or six to do that more,
00:31:58but of course there is a danger of giving away too many early rounds.
00:32:03Nice right hand by Diaz,
00:32:05but Angulo was going backwards in that full impact.
00:32:10Raul Caiz Jr. out of West Covina, California.
00:32:13His eighth world title fight as a referee.
00:32:16You know, Juan Diaz has made huge strides.
00:32:19He's 23.
00:32:20He's been a pro for seven years already, a champion for two.
00:32:23He's much more economical with his punches.
00:32:26While he still throws combinations, they're much more measured.
00:32:29You can see that Lily Savannah and he have done a lot of work in the gym.
00:32:33And he's really at a point now in his career
00:32:35where he wants to start making statements
00:32:37and step it up to a big name, high marquee,
00:32:40real polished type of opponent.
00:32:43Unified, Joel Cosmeor maybe,
00:32:45maybe the winner of the Jesus Chavez, Julio Diaz fight down the road.
00:32:49Maybe even beyond that, Ricky Hatton if he goes up and wait.
00:32:54Watch that hand.
00:32:55Well, he's made himself more difficult to hit.
00:32:58He does a much better job of blocking punches and slipping them.
00:33:01And even though Angulo's throwing a lot of punches in this round,
00:33:04still not many of them getting in.
00:33:07Diaz is more economical, but I think more accurate in this round.
00:33:12Diaz marches forward again.
00:33:13Oh, look at those body shots by Diaz.
00:33:18Stop.
00:33:18Break.
00:33:18Here we go.
00:33:19Max.
00:33:19Vicious exchange there.
00:33:30And Diaz.
00:33:3110 seconds.
00:33:3110 seconds.
00:33:32Very aggressive.
00:33:33Left hook up to the chin by Juan Diaz.
00:33:36That really scored.
00:33:37Great action here between Diaz and Angulo.
00:33:45But Diaz pretty much controlling.
00:33:47Coming up, our main event later tonight,
00:33:50the WBO Heavyweight Championship from Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
00:33:54It'll be Sergei Lehovich making his first title defense of the WBO crowd
00:34:00against Brooklyn's Shannon Briggs as we come to you from the enormous Chase Field
00:34:07open in 1998, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
00:34:19Diaz found a home for that left hook that landed a number of times.
00:34:25Against Angulo, and he just kept the pressure on him.
00:34:38Round five scheduled for 12 for the WBA Lightweight Championship.
00:34:43Juan Diaz pitching a shutout, appropriate, I guess, in a ballpark.
00:34:49That's going to be the last baseball reference.
00:34:51No, I don't think you can do it.
00:34:52I'm not sure.
00:34:54I'll give you a dollar, okay, if I have one more.
00:34:56We're going to fine you.
00:34:58Well, I'm really generous.
00:35:00Yeah, it's a right hand to the body by Angulo.
00:35:02You know, Steve, it's not as if Angulo has landed his own body shots.
00:35:05He has.
00:35:06He just hasn't been as effective, I think, as Diaz's.
00:35:11Juan Diaz really has a more compact style, a better defense.
00:35:17He's shown a lot of improvement.
00:35:19He really has.
00:35:20He's come a long way since we last saw him in, uh, what was that, about 2,000 in Houston when he fought Ubaldo Hernandez, I believe it was.
00:35:31And, uh, he was knocked down for the first time.
00:35:34And after the fight, on the post-fight interview, he got very emotional.
00:35:37He started, uh, crying.
00:35:39Because it's the first time he had ever experienced that as a pro.
00:35:42And, boy, has he toughened up.
00:35:44And, uh, you saw the press row scoring.
00:35:46They have it a shutout.
00:35:47Ezrai, 40-36, although one of those rounds was very close, and I was tempted to give it to Angulo.
00:35:53Rome Fraunheim from the Arizona Republic.
00:35:56Darren Nichols from BoxingTalkStops.com.
00:35:59And William Stickney, Jr. from the Houston Chronicle.
00:36:01Here we go, Box.
00:36:02Press row, people.
00:36:05Now, Angulo, at this moment, needs to land something significant.
00:36:10He is, those are excellent body shots, by the way, that he's throwing.
00:36:13And he is, as we point out, a fighter who picks up the beat as things go on.
00:36:19And there he goes with the right hand.
00:36:20So, you see, this is the Angulo that we saw against a number of opponents.
00:36:24He's very active, throws punches from all angles, and he's tough to deal with.
00:36:27He's having a good round five.
00:36:29Diaz is smart, though, because when he throws that uppercut, he throws it from close range.
00:36:34And that's what you're supposed to do.
00:36:35Absolutely.
00:36:36And there's one over the top by Diaz, and back comes Angulo with that uppercut you were talking about.
00:36:41And look at this, in the center of the rain, they go toe-to-toe.
00:36:45Wow, this is fun round five, and a good one for Angulo.
00:36:48He is getting himself back in this fight a little bit, at least by winning one round.
00:36:52While he certainly will still be behind in his bout, at least he's making some noise.
00:36:56A long right hand that tagged Angulo.
00:36:58That got him.
00:37:00Boy, that came from way out.
00:37:05Left uppercut on the inside of the chin of Diaz.
00:37:08That snapped his head back.
00:37:09That right uppercut missed.
00:37:10By Angulo.
00:37:12Angulo now out of the body.
00:37:14Which man will make a bigger impact with their body work, and which one will do it sooner, Steve?
00:37:19Both men have been committed to that.
00:37:21Look, there's Angulo going downstairs.
00:37:23Punch up, punch up.
00:37:24Tiene golpe salte.
00:37:25Wow.
00:37:26And Diaz.
00:37:27Man, these are good body shots.
00:37:28And this is not a surprise to Juan Diaz, because he looked at the tapes like we did.
00:37:31Yep.
00:37:32He knew that this kid was going to offer back.
00:37:35Ten seconds.
00:37:35Ten segundos.
00:37:36Welcome to America, Mr. Angulo.
00:37:38You had a good round for yourself.
00:37:40Oh, big left hook during that exchange by Diaz.
00:37:42No, stop.
00:37:43But Angulo stays on his feet.
00:37:48The parents of Diaz, a lot of anxiety there.
00:37:52Fidencio and Olivia.
00:37:54Olivia gets so wound up and so nervous watching her son Juan.
00:38:01It's very, very difficult for her.
00:38:02And when a round like that happens, it makes it even more tough.
00:38:08What mom wants to see their son get hit?
00:38:11All right?
00:38:11I need that jab, baby.
00:38:13All right?
00:38:13I got to have the jab going for me, all right?
00:38:16Now, this one here next to you, the jab.
00:38:17Now, he's right in front of you now.
00:38:18You don't have to look for him.
00:38:19Now, you can fight your fight, all right?
00:38:21Everything behind the jab, straight punches, combination, all right?
00:38:25When he's throwing a wide shot.
00:38:26The right hand landing from Diaz, that was a good straight right hand
00:38:33and tries to chop with it again.
00:38:35That coming in a round in which Angulo had his good moments,
00:38:40but this right hand was one of the better punchers for Diaz in that round.
00:38:47But all in all, Angulo had himself a pretty good round.
00:38:50Fifth title defense for WBA lightweight champion Juan Diaz.
00:38:54Round six scheduled for 12.
00:38:57Diaz in the blue trunks with the black trim won the title at age 20.
00:39:01Unanimous decision over Locke Basim in 2004
00:39:05with four successful title defenses.
00:39:10Angulo in his first world title attempt.
00:39:13He was rated number three, that high,
00:39:15but he had some visa problems, couldn't get to the States,
00:39:18and then they pushed him down to number 11.
00:39:19That's where he is now, as rated by the WBA.
00:39:22But Diaz back to using that superb jab,
00:39:26which started out this fight,
00:39:28and he may have abandoned it just a little in a couple rounds.
00:39:36Every time Diaz throws, Angulo just comes right back,
00:39:40but Diaz, the one who's scoring more.
00:39:45Diaz trying to take the steam out of Angulo.
00:39:48Oh, big miss there by Angulo, and that too will expend energy.
00:39:53But Diaz just never lets up.
00:39:56But look, the right uppercut scored by Angulo.
00:40:00Didn't have a lot behind it, but he made contact.
00:40:03And after a more difficult round five,
00:40:05Diaz has turned up the volume here in this round.
00:40:09Just wicked body shots by Diaz.
00:40:12And that seems almost impossible when you say that.
00:40:14He's turned up the volume.
00:40:18One point, holding.
00:40:20One point.
00:40:21To make matters worse.
00:40:22One point, holding.
00:40:23Si deja ir cuando te digo, no es holding.
00:40:26Okay?
00:40:26Deja ir cuando te digo.
00:40:27Here we go.
00:40:28Did you see a warning?
00:40:30No, I did not.
00:40:31But Raul Caiz Jr. taking a point away from Angulo for the hold.
00:40:43Punch out.
00:40:44Hands out.
00:40:45Deja ir.
00:40:45Deja ir.
00:40:46Ahí está.
00:40:46See, that's the time in about when you've got to ask yourself.
00:40:50This guy comes over here from South America,
00:40:53and all of a sudden, out of nowhere,
00:40:54there's a point taken away from him for holding.
00:40:57Now, this happens all the time in fights in the United States,
00:41:01and I have to be honest, it's disconcerting.
00:41:03It makes you look like they're willing to wait for the guy.
00:41:05That's an interesting point.
00:41:06I did not see a warning.
00:41:07Yeah, no.
00:41:08I mean, you know, we saw it when Robin Reed came over to fight Jeff Lacy.
00:41:11We've seen it a lot of times.
00:41:12Now, now Juan Diaz is getting the job done.
00:41:15What a left hand that was during that series of punches by Diaz.
00:41:19The big left.
00:41:20Okay, stop.
00:41:21Break.
00:41:21Ahí está.
00:41:22Back.
00:41:22That was the breakthrough punch there in that sequence.
00:41:25Manos libres.
00:41:25Ahí están.
00:41:26Están listos.
00:41:27Good round for Juan Diaz anyway,
00:41:28and now he gets the benefit of that call of holding.
00:41:34So, a litmus test right now for Angulo
00:41:37to get past this adversity.
00:41:41A right hand to the top of the head by Diaz,
00:41:45and you know what?
00:41:46Angulo didn't even budge.
00:41:48He's a tough guy.
00:41:49But Juan Diaz having himself a terrific round six.
00:41:53Angulo trying to get to the body.
00:41:59Look at the speed, the hand speed of Juan Diaz.
00:42:04Here's the protector.
00:42:16Give me the protector.
00:42:17Where's the protector?
00:42:19Okay, here's the protector.
00:42:21All right, now we've got to step it up in this round.
00:42:24Let's go.
00:42:25Well, let's take a look at when he was at the point taken away for holding.
00:42:38They're on the inside working.
00:42:41He does grab him there.
00:42:42That's true.
00:42:45Now, there is a chance, of course,
00:42:47we didn't catch it,
00:42:48that earlier,
00:42:49Caiz warned him.
00:42:50Yeah, it is possible.
00:42:51That's for sure.
00:42:52I just still think it's precipitous.
00:42:54Good work by Diaz.
00:42:55This was a round in which he did some phenomenal work
00:42:57to both the body and the head.
00:43:01And it wasn't as if Angulo wasn't busy.
00:43:03Look at, he throws lots of punches.
00:43:04They don't land.
00:43:05There's that signature left hook to the body by Diaz.
00:43:08He throws it as well as anybody in boxing.
00:43:11Round seven, standard 12
00:43:12for the WBA Lightweight Championship
00:43:14here in Chase Field.
00:43:16What a setting.
00:43:17Phoenix, Arizona.
00:43:19The Hobbit's Briggs coming up
00:43:21in our main event for the WBO Heavyweight Belt.
00:43:24Nice right uppercut
00:43:25on the inside by Angulo.
00:43:31Diaz again, as usual, coming forward.
00:43:33Nice snapping left hand.
00:43:35Got Angulo right on the head.
00:43:37You know, Angulo has tried very hard in this match
00:43:39to establish his jab.
00:43:40He's thrown many of them,
00:43:41but most of them have been blocked by Diaz
00:43:45or he slipped them.
00:43:49This is vintage Juan Diaz, isn't it, Steve?
00:43:51The constant pressure
00:43:52and even better defense, certainly,
00:43:55than he had early on.
00:43:56And he looks solid here
00:43:58and he really wants to impress.
00:44:05He wants to get by Angulo.
00:44:08Although Angulo's very stubborn
00:44:10and then really step it up.
00:44:13As you look at press row scoring,
00:44:14it's all Diaz
00:44:16as you check out
00:44:17our unofficial number.
00:44:1860-53 across the board
00:44:20all in favor of the champion.
00:44:22I have a 59-54,
00:44:24so I have two.
00:44:24I have a big edge for Diaz.
00:44:26Here at the halfway point.
00:44:28Body shot there by Diaz.
00:44:29What else is new?
00:44:30Yeah, and that was a beautiful body shot.
00:44:32Now Angulo switching lefty momentarily here
00:44:34to see if that would change his fortunes.
00:44:36Yeah, I didn't see him do that on the towel.
00:44:38There you go.
00:44:39This is something,
00:44:40a new wrinkle.
00:44:40Now he's trying to experiment with it.
00:44:43I wonder if Diaz knew he might do that.
00:44:46But it doesn't seem to matter.
00:44:48And in this case,
00:44:49it seems more like an act of frustration
00:44:52or desperation.
00:44:56And this particular style we're seeing
00:44:58is not what Angulo is most comfortable with.
00:45:01He would rather be moving forward
00:45:02and being aggressive.
00:45:03So to be this kind of boxer,
00:45:05not necessarily his game.
00:45:08You see it says LaPierre,
00:45:09the wild animal on the front of Angulo's trunks.
00:45:12It says La Brea.
00:45:13This is a good left hand.
00:45:14A long left.
00:45:14Another jab by Diaz.
00:45:17These jabs are like right hands from other people.
00:45:20They're hard.
00:45:23Angulo trained at La Brea Gym in L.A.
00:45:26for about 10 weeks.
00:45:27So that's why it says that on the back.
00:45:28That jab is beautiful by Juan Diaz.
00:45:37And he goes to it repeatedly.
00:45:38There it is again.
00:45:42This is as solid and complete a performance
00:45:44as Juan Diaz could have asked for.
00:45:46The jab is so effective.
00:45:48It's a range finder to set up.
00:45:50A heavy power shot.
00:45:52It's a weapon in itself.
00:45:54Keeps your opponent off balance.
00:45:56Out of his rhythm.
00:45:57It's such a fantastic weapon
00:45:59and he uses it so well.
00:46:02There it is again.
00:46:03That got Angulo off balance that time.
00:46:05The jab.
00:46:07Done, done.
00:46:07Nice and easy.
00:46:08The jab of Juan Diaz has just been spectacular.
00:46:29He puts it out there and it's multiple jabs.
00:46:32He doesn't just throw one.
00:46:33He sticks that jab out there
00:46:36and he'll continue to do it to Angulo throughout the round.
00:46:39There it is again.
00:46:40And those were spectacular.
00:46:42I mean, those are three straight jabs
00:46:44that not just landed,
00:46:45but Steve, as you point out,
00:46:46they're kind of like a right hand
00:46:48or a power punch from somebody.
00:46:50And in every phase,
00:46:53he's improved his game tonight.
00:46:54Well, you just saw what I saw
00:47:05and Zangulo spit into the bucket.
00:47:08Nothing but blood.
00:47:10And that's the result
00:47:12of Juan Diaz's punishment
00:47:14that he has dished out throughout the night.
00:47:19Boy, that just cascaded out of his mouth.
00:47:22Round eight.
00:47:22I don't mean to be graphic,
00:47:24but that's boxing.
00:47:26Especially with Juan Diaz.
00:47:28Diaz was so aware
00:47:29that this was, you know,
00:47:30like a trap fight.
00:47:31Kind of like a trap football game
00:47:32for a team that's looking ahead
00:47:33or after a big win.
00:47:35He said,
00:47:36I'm not going to let this guy
00:47:37do that to me
00:47:39and take him lightly.
00:47:40I'm going to prepare
00:47:40as well as I could possibly do so.
00:47:42And he has.
00:47:43And I think watching tapes of Angulo
00:47:45was a big help to him.
00:47:46Not every fighter does it
00:47:47and I don't really understand why.
00:47:49Boy, if you're wondering
00:47:51how does Diaz stay focused,
00:47:54how does he stay hungry
00:47:54with all these other interests
00:47:55trying to get a law degree.
00:47:59Well, just look at him tonight.
00:48:01Does that answer your question?
00:48:02He's probably living at home.
00:48:05He doesn't have to worry about that.
00:48:06His mom does the laundry.
00:48:07She does all his stuff.
00:48:12He really is a delightful young man.
00:48:14They do.
00:48:15They're very disciplined
00:48:16and very strict.
00:48:17He has to be asleep at 10 p.m.
00:48:20Especially during the training,
00:48:21of course.
00:48:21And, you know,
00:48:22in this round,
00:48:23a perfect example
00:48:24of Angulo throwing
00:48:25a lot of punches
00:48:26but just not being effective.
00:48:28He's just not landing
00:48:29as well as he would like.
00:48:30And he's been forced
00:48:32to play the role
00:48:33of boxer and mover
00:48:34and while he's capable
00:48:36of doing that,
00:48:37Angulo,
00:48:37it's not what he's
00:48:38most comfortable with.
00:48:40Angulo has been
00:48:41on the retreat
00:48:42most of the way
00:48:42which is uncharacteristic
00:48:45for him.
00:48:49Diaz just continues
00:48:50to come forward
00:48:51stalking Angulo.
00:48:53Got him there
00:48:54right on the forehead
00:48:55with the right
00:48:55then the left jab
00:48:56another beautiful jab.
00:48:57Jab.
00:48:59That was a weapon jab
00:49:00by Diaz.
00:49:01It pushed Angulo back.
00:49:03That's how strong
00:49:04that jab was.
00:49:07Yeah, if there's one
00:49:08punch in this fight
00:49:09that has, I think,
00:49:10stood out
00:49:11even above the left
00:49:12hooks to the body
00:49:12and the head
00:49:13it's been that jab
00:49:14because that's a weapon
00:49:16that while Diaz
00:49:16has used it in the past
00:49:17hasn't always been
00:49:19as effective
00:49:20as he would like it to be.
00:49:21Angulo's right eye
00:49:22beginning to swell.
00:49:24His corner claimed
00:49:25it was from a Diaz thumb.
00:49:29Good work on the inside
00:49:30by Diaz.
00:49:31But it's really
00:49:32Diaz's left jab
00:49:34that just repeatedly
00:49:34landed.
00:49:37He's one of the reasons
00:49:38why this lightweight
00:49:39division,
00:49:40even with its defections
00:49:41of the Corrales'
00:49:42and Castillo's,
00:49:42looks very, very
00:49:43interesting
00:49:44with the Casamayor's
00:49:45and Freitas
00:49:46who's still hanging around
00:49:47and other fighters
00:49:48like Julio Diaz
00:49:49and Hazen Chavez.
00:49:50Now we see
00:49:51a clash of heads.
00:49:52Hedge came together.
00:49:54What happened there
00:49:55was Diaz
00:49:56looked away for a second.
00:49:57I think he thought
00:49:57Raul Caiz Jr.
00:49:58was going to give him
00:49:59an instruction
00:49:59and Angulo let fly.
00:50:02Tira and golpes.
00:50:02Stop!
00:50:04Break!
00:50:05Hasta patras
00:50:05con legal break.
00:50:06Box!
00:50:07Five seconds.
00:50:08Cinco segundo.
00:50:11Tiempo!
00:50:13So with Angulo's
00:50:14right eye
00:50:14beginning to close
00:50:17He's getting desperate
00:50:18now.
00:50:18He's sitting down.
00:50:19All right?
00:50:20He's getting desperate
00:50:20so you've got to
00:50:21watch your head now.
00:50:22All right?
00:50:23Look, Juan,
00:50:24the jab is going to
00:50:25keep it moving,
00:50:26all right?
00:50:26When he stops,
00:50:27when you get close,
00:50:28start shooting uppercuts.
00:50:29I'm telling you.
00:50:30All you've got to do
00:50:30is shoot the uppercuts.
00:50:31He can't stop it.
00:50:32He ain't going to be
00:50:32able to grab nothing
00:50:33if you're shooting
00:50:33on bubbercats,
00:50:34all right?
00:50:35See, when you go down
00:50:36to go down to the body,
00:50:37he's going to grab you
00:50:38every time,
00:50:39but you just keep shooting
00:50:40And Angulo is trying
00:50:41his best to throw
00:50:42combinations as Diaz comes in,
00:50:44but you see how many
00:50:45of those punches
00:50:46either missed
00:50:47or were blocked.
00:50:49And you see Angulo there.
00:50:50There's an example.
00:50:51Nothing really landing
00:50:52flush for Angulo,
00:50:53and instead,
00:50:54it's Diaz's punches.
00:50:55Very, very accurate
00:50:56in that sequence.
00:50:57So that was this fight
00:50:58in microcosm, really.
00:51:00And there was the head
00:51:01hit Diaz
00:51:02and sent his head
00:51:04reeling back.
00:51:06The referee went in
00:51:07to take a piece.
00:51:11The damage to eye
00:51:12of Angulo.
00:51:14Box!
00:51:17We had a round nine
00:51:19scheduled for 12.
00:51:21It was that left jab
00:51:21by Diaz right
00:51:23in the damaged eye area
00:51:25of Angulo.
00:51:29But you're right,
00:51:29that was a great replay.
00:51:30You could see where Diaz
00:51:31was clearly head-butted.
00:51:35It may have been
00:51:36unintentional,
00:51:37but nevertheless,
00:51:38it hurts.
00:51:39Yep, sure does.
00:51:47Now, Angulo
00:51:48with right eye closing,
00:51:50trying his hand
00:51:51at the jab.
00:51:53Now, we're into
00:51:53round nine here,
00:51:54and Angulo
00:51:55certainly way,
00:51:56way behind
00:51:57in the scorecards.
00:51:58Remember,
00:51:59in addition,
00:51:59a point being deducted
00:52:00in round six,
00:52:01so that's a two-point round.
00:52:03So he needs to make
00:52:04something very dramatic
00:52:05happen.
00:52:06And we look at the
00:52:07press row scoring.
00:52:08They certainly all agree
00:52:09with me.
00:52:10I have a 79-72.
00:52:11They have an 80-71.
00:52:13Point is that
00:52:14Diaz is way ahead
00:52:16in this match.
00:52:17For Angulo,
00:52:18he's got to land
00:52:19something major.
00:52:19And if I was him
00:52:20on the inside,
00:52:20I would keep trying
00:52:21that uppercut
00:52:22a little bit more.
00:52:23That punch works
00:52:23for him earlier.
00:52:24So Juan Diaz
00:52:25overmatching Angulo,
00:52:28although Angulo
00:52:28is game.
00:52:30There's no question
00:52:30about that.
00:52:31And throwing punches,
00:52:32so it's not as if
00:52:33he's given up on this
00:52:34fight in any way,
00:52:34shape, or form.
00:52:35He's still throwing
00:52:36some excellent body shots.
00:52:37It's just I don't know
00:52:38that that's going to be
00:52:38enough to get the job
00:52:39done for him.
00:52:40Except for one problem,
00:52:42and I'm going to give you
00:52:43the dollar right now.
00:52:44Too many wild punches.
00:52:45I just made a dollar,
00:52:47folks.
00:52:48This is good.
00:52:49Here's a jab by Angulo.
00:52:52Work inside,
00:52:52Aistan.
00:52:53Give that back to me,
00:52:54please.
00:52:57Angulo throwing
00:52:58another straight
00:52:58punches from Angulo.
00:52:59When he throws the
00:53:00straight punches,
00:53:01he can get them in,
00:53:02but so many of them
00:53:03have been wide and
00:53:04looping.
00:53:04Now right hand
00:53:05over the top by Diaz.
00:53:07There's that jab
00:53:07of Diaz.
00:53:08Another beautiful
00:53:09jab by Juan Diaz.
00:53:15The reason,
00:53:16oh, beautiful
00:53:17body shot by Angulo.
00:53:18It's not that he
00:53:19hasn't gotten some
00:53:19things done in this
00:53:20fight.
00:53:20It's just that the
00:53:22pressure of Diaz is
00:53:23so relentless,
00:53:24and Diaz has done
00:53:24a better defensive
00:53:25job than he
00:53:27sometimes does,
00:53:28and so Angulo's
00:53:29not been able to
00:53:29get everything done.
00:53:30Welcome to the
00:53:31world title stage,
00:53:32Fernando Angulo.
00:53:33Juan Diaz
00:53:34continues his
00:53:35assault.
00:53:36Stop.
00:53:37Here we go.
00:53:37Rick.
00:53:39So many missed
00:53:40punches by Angulo
00:53:41in this fight.
00:53:45Right hand
00:53:49off the top
00:53:49of the head
00:53:50by Diaz.
00:53:51And the jab
00:53:52by Diaz.
00:53:59Diaz now
00:54:00just beating
00:54:00Angulo
00:54:01the old expression
00:54:02from pillar
00:54:03to post.
00:54:0510 seconds,
00:54:06gentlemen.
00:54:08Final seconds
00:54:08of round nine.
00:54:10Right off the
00:54:11head of the
00:54:11inside.
00:54:11Nicely done
00:54:12by Angulo.
00:54:12He certainly
00:54:14doesn't give up
00:54:15with that right
00:54:16eye continuing
00:54:17to be a problem.
00:54:24It's round.
00:54:26It's an even
00:54:26fight.
00:54:26You can't
00:54:27exchange with him.
00:54:31I'm going to
00:54:31see what the
00:54:31doctor says now
00:54:32about his eye.
00:54:36He's okay.
00:54:36He's okay.
00:54:41Keep breathing.
00:54:41Keep breathing.
00:54:43You've got to
00:54:43surprise him.
00:54:44You've got to
00:54:44surprise him.
00:54:46It's the 10th round.
00:54:47You can't let him
00:54:48work.
00:54:49You've got to
00:54:49surprise him.
00:54:52You still have to
00:54:53do the work.
00:54:54You still have to
00:54:54do the work.
00:54:55You're doing it well.
00:54:56Well, they may
00:54:57think it's an even
00:54:58fight in there,
00:54:59but inside the ring
00:54:59doesn't look so even.
00:55:01Good chopping
00:55:02right hand,
00:55:02and Angulo
00:55:03kind of in
00:55:03desperation
00:55:04whipping
00:55:05big combinations.
00:55:07A couple of those
00:55:07punches got in,
00:55:08but
00:55:08and that's the
00:55:11straight right hand
00:55:12by Angulo.
00:55:12It doesn't throw it
00:55:13straight for Alvin.
00:55:13The jab of Diaz has
00:55:15been punishing
00:55:16from the beginning
00:55:17of this fight,
00:55:18and that one a good
00:55:19example.
00:55:20Well, just for the,
00:55:21excuse me, Al,
00:55:22just for the record,
00:55:23Angulo does have
00:55:24two late round
00:55:25knockouts,
00:55:25one in round 10,
00:55:27one in round 11.
00:55:28One, in fact,
00:55:29was over Diaz,
00:55:31Amit Diaz.
00:55:32But he certainly
00:55:34wasn't a fighter
00:55:34of ones,
00:55:35Kevin.
00:55:36No, not related.
00:55:37Well, I call
00:55:37his last feet.
00:55:43I don't know
00:55:44if they really
00:55:44think the fight
00:55:45is even.
00:55:46I was just
00:55:46thinking about that.
00:55:47That was Andres
00:55:48Montanez,
00:55:48who's trained
00:55:49many top fighters
00:55:50in Venezuela,
00:55:51highly regarded
00:55:51in Venezuela.
00:55:53In fact,
00:55:54his son,
00:55:54a good middleweight
00:55:55prospect,
00:55:55but that may have
00:55:56just been just
00:55:57a cheerleading ploy,
00:55:58just something
00:55:59for Angulo's
00:56:02confidence,
00:56:02because obviously
00:56:03it's not even
00:56:03close.
00:56:05I can't imagine
00:56:06they're seeing it
00:56:06that way.
00:56:07And it's not
00:56:07that their man
00:56:08hasn't thrown
00:56:09a lot of punches
00:56:10and been acting.
00:56:10There's that body
00:56:11work.
00:56:11He's done phenomenal
00:56:12body work,
00:56:13Angulo,
00:56:14during the portions
00:56:15of this fight,
00:56:16but it pales
00:56:17in comparison
00:56:17to what Diaz has done.
00:56:23And there you see
00:56:24all those
00:56:25blocked to the head.
00:56:26Then the body
00:56:26he gets.
00:56:27Now this round
00:56:28is a perfect example.
00:56:28He's winning this
00:56:30round, Angulo,
00:56:31with those body
00:56:31shots,
00:56:32because Diaz
00:56:32hasn't landed
00:56:33as much as he
00:56:34normally has
00:56:34in this fight.
00:56:35And when was
00:56:35the last time
00:56:36you saw a clinch
00:56:37in this fight?
00:56:37That was like
00:56:38the first one.
00:56:39Took all the way
00:56:39to round 10.
00:56:41This is the best
00:56:42round Angulo
00:56:42has had
00:56:43since the fifth round.
00:56:45good body shot there
00:56:58by Diaz.
00:56:59Diaz is having a good
00:56:59round.
00:57:00He's having an excellent
00:57:01round.
00:57:01His body work's been
00:57:02superb.
00:57:03He's been very active.
00:57:05He's landed more punches
00:57:06through the middle
00:57:07than he has
00:57:08the rest of this fight.
00:57:11Good body shot there
00:57:12by Diaz.
00:57:13He's doing a lot of
00:57:14holding now,
00:57:14Angulo.
00:57:15Now I can say
00:57:17he's holding.
00:57:17Had a point taken away
00:57:18earlier for that.
00:57:19Oh, what a left-right
00:57:20combination.
00:57:21And both punches
00:57:22landed by Diaz.
00:57:24And now on the inside,
00:57:25the uppercut.
00:57:26Diaz
00:57:26with a holding
00:57:28and hitting.
00:57:32It's pretty much
00:57:33nonstop action,
00:57:34that's for sure.
00:57:35One-sided affair
00:57:37in favor of Diaz,
00:57:38but a lot of action.
00:57:39Here we go, break.
00:57:40And here in round 10,
00:57:42Diaz has made
00:57:43something of a comeback.
00:57:44I just don't know
00:57:44if it's enough for him
00:57:45to win this 10th round
00:57:46because there's some
00:57:47more good work
00:57:47downstairs by Angulo.
00:57:49Here comes Diaz again.
00:57:53Juan Diaz
00:57:55who has dominated
00:57:55this fight.
00:57:58Looking for his
00:57:59fifth title defense
00:58:00at age 23.
00:58:02Now often you can say
00:58:03that, huh?
00:58:06Wilfred Benitez
00:58:07who turned pro at 15
00:58:09on the 140 pound
00:58:11title at 17.
00:58:13Roberto Delan
00:58:14turned pro at 15
00:58:16on the title of 21.
00:58:17Here, Angulo
00:58:18trapped against the ropes.
00:58:20Diaz to the bottom.
00:58:29We're at Chase Field,
00:58:31home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
00:58:33The folks are getting ready
00:58:34for the main event.
00:58:36I had only seen
00:58:37this ballpark on TV.
00:58:39This is an enormous
00:58:40structure, isn't it?
00:58:41Oh, it's massive
00:58:42and a nice ballpark.
00:58:44Retractable roof
00:58:45comes in handy
00:58:45on those extremely hot
00:58:47summer Phoenix nights.
00:58:49And it's only about
00:58:50six minutes it takes
00:58:52to raise the roof
00:58:53home to a team
00:58:54that won a World Series
00:58:55here.
00:58:57Beat the Yankees
00:58:58in season seven.
00:59:01It's time to get lucky
00:59:02and hit you with something,
00:59:02all right?
00:59:03Look, look, look,
00:59:05keep your heads high,
00:59:06move your head.
00:59:06That's all.
00:59:07No, nothing's going to have
00:59:07to get about the knockouts.
00:59:08Yeah.
00:59:08All right?
00:59:09Let's just keep working.
00:59:10All right, gentlemen.
00:59:11You go all day long
00:59:13in the gym.
00:59:13I would jab one.
00:59:17Well, they call this
00:59:18the championship rounds.
00:59:20Round 11.
00:59:20You know, they say
00:59:24there are no moral
00:59:25victories in sports,
00:59:26but somewhat of a moral
00:59:28victory for Angulo.
00:59:29His first trip to the
00:59:30United States,
00:59:30his first world title fight,
00:59:32getting Juan Diaz
00:59:33to the championship rounds.
00:59:35And I think a big factor,
00:59:36and we talked about it,
00:59:37is while he fought
00:59:38some pretty good fighters
00:59:39like Aloy Rojas,
00:59:40a former champion,
00:59:41although when he fought
00:59:42him, he was 37.
00:59:43He won a split decision.
00:59:44In the last year or two
00:59:46with the 11-month layoff,
00:59:47not having fought
00:59:48the kind of competition
00:59:49that was at this level,
00:59:50that's a big minus for him.
00:59:52Nice right hand by Diaz.
00:59:54Big right hand
00:59:54off the top of Angulo's head.
00:59:56Both showing they're
00:59:57in excellent,
00:59:58exquisite condition.
01:00:00Stop!
01:00:00Here we go!
01:00:01No, no, no, no.
01:00:01It's open, too.
01:00:02Box!
01:00:06Long right hand again
01:00:07by Diaz,
01:00:08that connected.
01:00:10Another one!
01:00:12Boy, he's got that down.
01:00:14That's three times
01:00:15he's been able to score
01:00:16on that long right, Diaz.
01:00:19He's improved
01:00:20every portion
01:00:20of his arsenal,
01:00:21and the right hand's
01:00:22a good example.
01:00:23He's not by trade
01:00:23that much of a right-handed
01:00:25puncher,
01:00:25but we've seen that punch
01:00:27in this fight
01:00:27be very compact,
01:00:28short,
01:00:29and have some pop.
01:00:31Stop!
01:00:31Break!
01:00:34Box!
01:00:34Diaz's jab
01:00:35looking good throw-out,
01:00:36body shots,
01:00:37left hook.
01:00:40Work inside,
01:00:41let's go!
01:00:41Pinch in there,
01:00:42let's go!
01:00:42Showing a lot,
01:00:42oh, nice right uppercut
01:00:44on the inside by Diaz.
01:00:44Showing a lot more
01:00:45boxing ability
01:00:46than we've seen
01:00:47than we've seen
01:00:47in the past.
01:00:50You know,
01:00:51Angulo has never
01:00:52stopped throwing punches
01:00:53in this fight,
01:00:54has he?
01:00:54Just, I mean,
01:00:54his punch output
01:00:55is extraordinary
01:00:56here in round 11.
01:00:57It's just that
01:00:58he's not getting
01:00:59enough done
01:00:59with those punches.
01:01:02And the crowd
01:01:02chanting Diaz's name.
01:01:05Nice following
01:01:05here in Phoenix.
01:01:08Angulo
01:01:08with some good work
01:01:09there.
01:01:10Had his moments
01:01:11in these last
01:01:12couple of rounds.
01:01:12I thought he won
01:01:13round 10.
01:01:23One minute to go
01:01:24in the 11th.
01:01:25Stop!
01:01:25Here we go,
01:01:26here we go,
01:01:26here we go.
01:01:26Break!
01:01:27There we go,
01:01:27that's all right,
01:01:28that's gone.
01:01:28There you go.
01:01:29Take a beat.
01:01:30Let's go.
01:01:31Break!
01:01:36One shot,
01:01:37one shot.
01:01:37There you go.
01:01:38We watched Angulo
01:01:39leading into this fight.
01:01:40I think we expected
01:01:41this kind of action.
01:01:43I think the wild card
01:01:45here that's made
01:01:46this a more
01:01:46one-sided match,
01:01:47even though,
01:01:48as you point out,
01:01:49Steve,
01:01:49there's been a lot
01:01:49of back and forth,
01:01:52is the fact that
01:01:53Diaz has fought
01:01:55so well defensively.
01:01:56So much so,
01:01:58that Angulo's not
01:01:58been able to get
01:01:59anything done.
01:02:00And so I think
01:02:01it's made it
01:02:01more one-sided
01:02:02than we thought
01:02:03it might be.
01:02:04Well,
01:02:04he said one of
01:02:04his objectives
01:02:05coming to this fight
01:02:06was to try to
01:02:07cut down on getting
01:02:08hit,
01:02:08and he's doing
01:02:09the hitting here.
01:02:10And he's hurting
01:02:10Angulo on this round.
01:02:14Stop!
01:02:14Angulo just holding on.
01:02:16Angulo's right eye
01:02:18all but shut.
01:02:20Tremendous swelling
01:02:21around the right eye
01:02:22of Angulo.
01:02:24That's a product of
01:02:25the very effective
01:02:26jab all night
01:02:27by this man,
01:02:28Juan Diaz.
01:02:29Last round,
01:02:35okay,
01:02:35look,
01:02:36let me tell you
01:02:36something.
01:02:37If you want to
01:02:37knock this guy out,
01:02:38okay,
01:02:39you're going to have
01:02:39to do it using
01:02:40your jab,
01:02:41getting close to him,
01:02:42and then start
01:02:42leading off with
01:02:43uppercut,
01:02:43then turn your
01:02:44hook over,
01:02:45okay?
01:02:45Uppercut first,
01:02:46and then hook,
01:02:47but jab first,
01:02:48all right?
01:02:48Come on,
01:02:49baby,
01:02:49just give me that
01:02:50jab first,
01:02:50all right?
01:02:50That's all I need.
01:02:51Don't,
01:02:52don't.
01:02:52Okay,
01:02:54give me a deep
01:02:54knock on my
01:02:54slow.
01:02:55Don't get cold,
01:02:56all right?
01:02:56Everything is good.
01:02:57Everything is good.
01:02:58Don't let this guy
01:02:58get lucky.
01:02:59Fight smart,
01:03:00okay?
01:03:00Be smart this round,
01:03:01all right?
01:03:02Everything behind the
01:03:03jab.
01:03:03Soon you get cold,
01:03:04don't shoot him up
01:03:05because then start
01:03:05turning a double
01:03:06hook over,
01:03:07okay?
01:03:08Everything is good.
01:03:10Juan Diaz had a
01:03:11superb round in
01:03:12round 11,
01:03:14landing those big
01:03:15hooks,
01:03:15and on the inside,
01:03:18very, very
01:03:19effective.
01:03:20There's his mom.
01:03:23Even though he's
01:03:24way ahead,
01:03:25you wouldn't know
01:03:26it looking at
01:03:27Olivia Diaz,
01:03:28would you?
01:03:28This does not look
01:03:29like the mom of
01:03:30the son who's
01:03:30winning.
01:03:31What a strain that
01:03:32is on her.
01:03:33They touch gloves
01:03:33for round 12.
01:03:37You can just see it
01:03:39in her eyes,
01:03:40in her face.
01:03:41Please retire and
01:03:42become a lawyer.
01:03:45At some point,
01:03:45he hopes to do.
01:03:48Well,
01:03:48the lightweight
01:03:48division we touched
01:03:49on,
01:03:50it filled with a lot
01:03:51of interesting fighters.
01:03:52This man is one of
01:03:53them.
01:03:53Julia Diaz and
01:03:54Jesus Chavez will
01:03:55fight for the
01:03:55IBF title.
01:03:57Pasamaro,
01:03:57we saw win the
01:03:58WBC title.
01:04:00David Diaz lurking
01:04:01there in that.
01:04:02A very fine fighter
01:04:03from Chicago.
01:04:04Esseline Alfredo's
01:04:05thinking about not
01:04:06retiring now and
01:04:07hanging around.
01:04:08There's a shocker.
01:04:09Boxer coming out
01:04:10of retirement.
01:04:12It's never
01:04:12happened before.
01:04:14His lasted about
01:04:1510 days.
01:04:16That was one of the
01:04:17laundromes.
01:04:18Get your arm out.
01:04:19Final round.
01:04:24Loose guys ahead,
01:04:25they believe,
01:04:25for Juan Diaz.
01:04:26And this performance
01:04:27does nothing but
01:04:28help him.
01:04:28It's been just a
01:04:29superb effort on
01:04:31his part.
01:04:32Well,
01:04:33he's got Corrales and
01:04:34Castillo out of the
01:04:35way.
01:04:35They're moving up in
01:04:36weight.
01:04:37And now Juan Diaz
01:04:38in a tremendous
01:04:41position to take the
01:04:43initiative and
01:04:44become the man at
01:04:45135 pounds.
01:04:47Let's go.
01:04:48He's got to get
01:04:48Casamayor out of the
01:04:49way.
01:04:51Jesus Chavez.
01:04:54It won't be easy,
01:04:55but he certainly
01:04:58has the ability.
01:04:59Let's go.
01:05:00Hands are free.
01:05:00Let's go.
01:05:01Box.
01:05:01Break.
01:05:03He's looking to
01:05:05make it 31-0.
01:05:09And that was
01:05:10sage advice from
01:05:11two-time world title
01:05:12challenger Roddy
01:05:13Shields.
01:05:13Just keep using that
01:05:14jab.
01:05:16Don't do anything
01:05:17foolish.
01:05:19You're in the
01:05:1912th round.
01:05:20You're way ahead.
01:05:22Stop.
01:05:22Break.
01:05:23There you go.
01:05:24There you go.
01:05:24There you go.
01:05:25Box.
01:05:27Nice uppercut on
01:05:28the inside by
01:05:29Diaz.
01:05:30Punch out.
01:05:30Punch out.
01:05:31Punch out.
01:05:31If nothing else,
01:05:32a very game effort
01:05:33by the South
01:05:34American.
01:05:35Box.
01:05:36Fernando Angulo.
01:05:37I don't think he's
01:05:38embarrassed himself at
01:05:39all here this evening.
01:05:40You know, 11-month
01:05:41layoff.
01:05:42He was not
01:05:43fighting, I don't
01:05:43believe, the kind of
01:05:44competition before that
01:05:46that would get him
01:05:47ready for Diaz.
01:05:48And so given all that,
01:05:49we see this young man
01:05:50at age 25 that has
01:05:51certain skills and
01:05:52toughness.
01:05:53He should get a chance
01:05:54at boxing center stage
01:05:55again.
01:05:57We approach 30 seconds
01:05:58remaining in the
01:05:59final round here.
01:06:04Juan Diaz on the
01:06:05threshold of his
01:06:06fifth successful title
01:06:08defense at the tender
01:06:10age of 23.
01:06:14He couldn't be happier
01:06:16with this performance.
01:06:17He has shown so many
01:06:20different skills that he's
01:06:21been working on.
01:06:22Such a varied arsenal.
01:06:24Great repertoire.
01:06:28And he made a good point
01:06:30for really improving on
01:06:31his defense.
01:06:34That's it.
01:06:36And Angulo walking very
01:06:38gingerly to his corner.
01:06:39He got beaten up by this
01:06:41fan, Juan Diaz.
01:07:09Juan thinks if he
01:07:11looks down there and
01:07:12sees his mom.
01:07:14That'll be rough.
01:07:25It's Willie Savannah
01:07:26there.
01:07:27Longtime manager Willie
01:07:29Savannah who has to be
01:07:31extremely, extremely happy.
01:07:34The story of this fight
01:07:36is the pressure of Juan
01:07:38Diaz, but there's another
01:07:40more subtle story as well.
01:07:42It's not just the pressure
01:07:43of Diaz, but it's how
01:07:44effectively it was used
01:07:46and how it was used
01:07:47without putting himself in
01:07:48harm's way as he has
01:07:50sometimes in the past.
01:07:51Coming forward, throwing
01:07:52lots of punches, but also
01:07:54taking care to defend
01:07:56better.
01:07:56You see him slip a punch and
01:07:58then throw the lead right
01:07:59hand.
01:08:00There were right hands,
01:08:01there were hooks, and
01:08:02oh boy were there jabs.
01:08:03There's one that operated
01:08:05just like a straight right
01:08:07hand.
01:08:07So that, this fight, in
01:08:10brevity.
01:08:11You know, that's when the
01:08:12referee, I think, took a
01:08:13point away from him to hurt
01:08:15him real bad.
01:08:15So the baby bull rolls on.
01:08:19Juan Diaz.
01:08:20The question is, where does he
01:08:25go from here?
01:08:26We're set for the decision.
01:08:28We get it up to our ring
01:08:29announcer, Jimmy Lennon-Jude.
01:08:32Ladies and gentlemen, after 12
01:08:34rounds of action, we have a
01:08:36unanimous decision.
01:08:37Here are the score totals.
01:08:39Judge at ringside, Raul Kaye,
01:08:41senior, scores about 116 to 111.
01:08:45Judges at ringside, Gerald
01:08:48Maltz and Luis Pabon, both
01:08:50score the bat, 118 to 109.
01:08:54All three in favor of the
01:08:55winner, still undefeated, and
01:08:58still the WBA lightweight
01:09:01champion of the world, Juan
01:09:03Baby Bull Diaz.
01:09:09So a shout out for Juan Diaz,
01:09:12and finally, Olivia can smile.
01:09:14Boy, thank goodness.
01:09:16It's gut-wrenching for her.
01:09:18You look over her, you feel,
01:09:19you feel for her.
01:09:20Juan Diaz now 31-0, his fifth
01:09:22successful defense of the title.
01:09:26And coming up next from right
01:09:30here at Chase Field in downtown
01:09:32Phoenix, Arizona, it's our main
01:09:34event.
01:09:34It'll be Sergey Lojovic making his
01:09:36first defense of the WBO heavyweight
01:09:38belt facing Shannon Briggs.
01:09:40A lot of question marks surrounding
01:09:41the veteran Briggs, but no
01:09:43questioning his power.
01:09:44Will it be enough against the
01:09:45skilled Lojovic, who clearly proved
01:09:47his bravery and ability to take a
01:09:50big punch in the win over
01:09:51Lehman Brewster?
01:09:52The trash-talking Briggs, who says
01:09:54he'll bring luster back to the
01:09:55division, has tried to get inside
01:09:57Lojovic's head with the taunts and
01:09:59the insults.
01:10:00The mild-mannered Lojovic, who's
01:10:02tried to ignore Briggs, calls him a
01:10:04punk and an idiot.
01:10:06Lojovic Briggs up next.
01:10:07Right now, set for post-fight
01:10:09reaction from our first bout.
01:10:10Up we go to Jim Gray.
01:10:11All right, Steve, thank you very
01:10:14much.
01:10:14Juan, congratulations.
01:10:15This may be a bad punt, but what's
01:10:17it like to pitch a shutout?
01:10:18I mean, you know, my performance
01:10:21was, it was okay tonight, you know.
01:10:24I tried to fight.
01:10:25The guy was holding me a lot.
01:10:27He was a tough guy, though.
01:10:28I got to give him credit for that.
01:10:29He was real tough.
01:10:30He could take a good punch.
01:10:32Was this perhaps your best
01:10:33performance just based on everything
01:10:35that you were able to accomplish
01:10:36tonight?
01:10:37I think so.
01:10:38I think, you know, I've been
01:10:40getting guys like Jose Cotto, Randy
01:10:44Suico, who are tremendous punchers.
01:10:47They're great boxers.
01:10:49And, you know, Fernando Gullo was a
01:10:51great boxer as well.
01:10:52It's just a little different type of
01:10:53technique.
01:10:54So I'm glad that I got him in there
01:10:55and I got the victory because it
01:10:57was showing me something different.
01:10:59Do you ever look over and see what
01:11:01your mom is going through, what
01:11:02Olivia is going through during this
01:11:03fight?
01:11:04You know, I look at it when I get
01:11:06home and I'm like, Mom, you know,
01:11:08I try to give her some of them
01:11:09pills that relax you, but she
01:11:11won't take them.
01:11:12I'm like, Mom, you know.
01:11:13I think the only thing that's
01:11:14going to relax her is if you get
01:11:16that law degree and get out of
01:11:17boxing.
01:11:17Are you going to consider that?
01:11:18I think so.
01:11:19I mean, in the future right now,
01:11:21you know, my main objective is to
01:11:23unify the division, the lightweight
01:11:25division and be on top like the
01:11:28great Julio Cesar Chavez did at
01:11:29one point.
01:11:30So who would you like to take on
01:11:31next in that division?
01:11:32I want to take any other
01:11:34champion.
01:11:34You know, I feel that I'm ready.
01:11:36Now I fought my first fight under
01:11:38Don King.
01:11:39I know he can make things happen
01:11:41and that's the plan to unify the
01:11:43division.
01:11:44Well, if you can make things
01:11:45happen, Don, what's your plan?
01:11:47Well, if we can make things
01:11:48happen, we'll fight the winner of
01:11:50the Jesus Chavez and Julio Diaz
01:11:52and then we'll fight Casimeo or
01:11:54whatever, whichever order they come
01:11:55in, you know.
01:11:56Will this all be on Showtime?
01:11:57It's going to be on Showtime.
01:11:58There's a great champion.
01:11:59In fact, we hope to be on the
01:12:00Super Bowl weekend.
01:12:02You know what I mean?
01:12:02We really put him in the way a
01:12:03star-studded performer should be.
01:12:05That's what he is.
01:12:05Him and Willie Savannah.
01:12:06Juan, congratulations to you.
01:12:08It's great to see you back.
01:12:09I want to tell my parents I love
01:12:10them very much.
01:12:11Un saludo a toda la raza de
01:12:12Guerrero y de Atlanta.
01:12:14Hey, Juan, I just want to ask you
01:12:15before we go back to the other
01:12:17guys, you know, while you've got
01:12:19all these other things that you're
01:12:21attending to, you have so many
01:12:22other interests and you have so
01:12:24many other things that are going
01:12:25good in your life.
01:12:26You're so well-spoken.
01:12:27You're so intelligent.
01:12:28How do you keep your focus on
01:12:29boxing?
01:12:30My mom.
01:12:31My mom and that sandal of hers
01:12:33that she, she's like, look, I got
01:12:34the sandal right here for you if
01:12:35you don't, if you don't, if you
01:12:36don't listen to me.
01:12:38That's what keeps me in line.
01:12:39I'm going to take him and his mom
01:12:40to Mordecai the Driller in Las
01:12:42Vegas and get them some.
01:12:43If your mom been doing that, she
01:12:44need a sparkling stone.
01:12:47Well, Don, if you took one of
01:12:48them off your neck, if you took
01:12:49one of them off your neck for
01:12:50crying out loud, you must weigh
01:12:51about 20 more pounds.
01:12:52You don't need to go to weight
01:12:53watchers or anything, take one
01:12:54off and give him one now.
01:12:56To Mordecai the Driller in Las
01:12:58Vegas, Nevada, and get them a
01:13:00stone because they both are
01:13:01shining.
01:13:02That's true.
01:13:02And he's got a beautiful belt to
01:13:03prove it.
01:13:04Congratulations, Juan.
01:13:04Thank you very much, Jim.
01:13:05Glad to be back.
01:13:07Glad to have you back.
01:13:08All right, let's go back to
01:13:08Steve and Al.
01:13:09All right, Jim, thank you so
01:13:11much.
01:13:11The very personable one.
01:13:14Diaz, totally dominating here.
01:13:16He threw a shutout, won every
01:13:19round.
01:13:19Let's see how the scoring went for
01:13:20Diaz Angulo.
01:13:21Raul Caiz Sr.
01:13:22had a 1-16, 1-11.
01:13:25Gerald Maltz, 1-18, 1-09.
01:13:27Luis Pabon, 1-18, 1-09.
01:13:30And as far as the press row
01:13:33scorers were concerned, they had
01:13:35it, a complete shutout.
01:13:37Norm Fraunheim, Darren Nichols,
01:13:39and William Stickney Jr.
01:13:41And I had a 1-18, 1-09 as well
01:13:44for Diaz, so I had it lopsided.
01:13:47All right, so a one-sided victory
01:13:49for Juan Diaz, who retains his WBA
01:13:51lightweight championship.
01:13:53And before we continue our coverage
01:13:54from Phoenix, let's show you what
01:13:56happened last night in Atlantic
01:13:57City on Showbox, the new generation.
01:14:03Undefeated welterweights open the
01:14:05show as Shimon Alvarez squared off
01:14:08with Enrique Gutierrez.
01:14:10Alvarez scored a pivotal flash
01:14:12knockdown in the first round, but
01:14:14Gutierrez turned up the heat later
01:14:16in the fight.
01:14:17At the end of eight rounds, Alvarez
01:14:19hangs on and wins a majority decision.
01:14:22Alvarez!
01:14:27Then in the main event, undefeated
01:14:29Isaac LaChueo took on Kendall Holt.
01:14:33Holt showed speed, power, and
01:14:34excellent ring movement, knocking
01:14:36down LaChueo in the ninth, eleventh,
01:14:38and twelfth rounds.
01:14:39On his way to a unanimous decision
01:14:42and the N-A-B-O super lightweight
01:14:45title.

01:15:16Then Friday, December 1st, we bring
