00:00The Russian delegation present in Turkey here for the scheduled negotiations with Ukraine
00:13held a press conference rejecting the latest remarks by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy.
00:22May 15th marks Nakba Day for Palestinians today to commemorate the master's possession
00:28and forced displacement during the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.
00:39And several sectors of Colombian society held demonstrations following the rejection of the popular consultation initiative by the Senate.
00:53Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Belen de los Santos.
00:56I'm from the Teresor Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:11We now begin with the information.
01:13The Russian delegation present in Turkey here for the scheduled negotiations with Ukraine
01:18held a press conference in response to the latest remarks by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy.
01:24This way, the head of the delegation, Vladimir Medenskyy, reaffirmed the authority of the officials appointed for the talks,
01:32stressing that they were approved by a presidential decree and possessed all the necessary competences
01:37and authority to conduct the negotiations.
01:40Furthermore, Medenskyy recalled that talks were a continuation of the 2022 peace process
01:48that was interrupted by the Ukrainian side while highlighting his delegation's willingness to find a sustainable and long-lasting solution to the conflict.
01:57For his part, after belittling the Russian delegation upon his arrival in Ankara,
02:03the Ukrainian president stated that he would not participate directly in talks
02:07but would send representatives to Istanbul.
02:10Delegations and negotiations are set to take place on Friday.
02:18We consider these negotiations as a continuation of the peace process in Istanbul,
02:26which unfortunately was interrupted by the Ukrainian side three years ago.
02:32Our official delegation has been approved by a presidential decree
02:36and possesses all the necessary competencies and authority to conduct negotiations.
02:40The delegation is set on a constructive course, aiming to find possible solutions and points of convergence.
02:55The goal of direct negotiations with the Ukrainian side is, sooner or later,
03:00to reach the establishment of a long-term peace by eliminating the fundamental root causes of the conflict.
03:05And when I move on to other topics, as May 15th marks Nakba Day for Palestinians,
03:26a day to commemorate the mass dispossession and forced displacement
03:29during the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.
03:33Palestinians held marches in the occupied West Bank in the city of Ramallah
03:38to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, or catastrophe,
03:43in which an estimated 750,000 Palestinians were expelled from their lands
03:49after Israel declared itself an independent state in their territory.
03:53Palestinian flags and keys symbolize the lost homes
03:56and the permanent desire and struggle for their return.
04:00This year, the commemoration takes place amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza
04:04that killed over 50,000, as Israel continues to force displacements
04:10in all the enclave and its aid blockade and ongoing attacks.
04:15Every day, we must speak to our children about our country,
04:24about what our ancestors lived through and what exactly happened to them.
04:28This is our duty.
04:30If we stop talking about the issue, it will fade away.
04:34We are firmly committed to our cause, the refugee cause,
04:38and we certainly still hope for our return.
04:41I came here to make a solidarity, 77 years of suffering.
04:47We still have suffering.
04:48Our priority now is to stop the genocide, to stop the aggressive settlers,
04:52to stop the aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip.
04:55We are here. We are steadfast.
04:59We remain here and we will stay in this land because we believe that Victory Day...
05:03In this context, the Venezuelan government expressed its solidarity to the Palestinian people
05:10on this 77th anniversary of the NAGWA.
05:14Through an official statement, the government stated that Venezuela,
05:17in firm adherence to the principles of international law, justice, and self-determination of peoples,
05:22joins today in deep solidarity with the brotherly people of Palestine
05:26as they commemorate the 77th anniversary of the NAGWA,
05:31a catastrophe that marked the beginning of the systematic dispossession,
05:37forced exile, and continued suffering of millions of Palestinians uprooted from their ancestral land.
05:44In the communique, they stated that 77 years ago,
05:48the colonial ambition of Israeli Zionism gave way to a massive, planned, and violent expulsion
05:54of the Palestinian population.
05:56That historic crime has not ceased.
05:59Its tragic consequences persist to this day,
06:02today aggravated by the ongoing genocide,
06:05brutally executed by the Nazi regime of Israel
06:08and its chief perpetrator, the war criminal, Benjamin Netanyahu.
06:12It goes on to warn that the NAGWA is not a memory of the past.
06:17It is an open wound that bleeds with every act of aggression,
06:21with every murdered child, with every destroyed home,
06:25with every Palestinian life cut short by the machinery of war,
06:28apartheid, and occupation of the state of Israel.
06:32In its closing remarks, the statement assured that the people and the government of Venezuela,
06:37headed by President Nicolás Maduro Moros,
06:39embraced with unwavering brotherhood and commitment the brave and dignified Palestinian people.
06:45Their cause is our cause.
06:46Their heroic resistance is a source of inspiration for the free peoples of the world,
06:52and their legitimate yearning for justice, peace, and sovereignty
06:55is a cry that we make our own with the conviction that sooner rather than later,
07:00freedom and dignity will flourish forever in the sacred land of Palestine,
07:05closing by stating, long live free and sovereign Palestine.
07:17Palestinian civil defense recorded 94 deaths as a result of an overnight Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip.
07:24The entity further detailed that occupation forces dropped bombs in Khanyune city in southern Gaza,
07:31which claimed over 60 lives, including journalist Hassan Samour and his 11 family members.
07:37Moreover, reporter Amart Al-Helo was hit to death in a different strike,
07:43so the Gazan media office has registered 217 journalists killed since October of 2023.
07:50In addition, the Israeli army targeted two of a complex comprising a prayer room and a medical clinic in northern Jovelia,
08:00which led to 15 fatal victims, including 11 children and women.
08:05Meanwhile, the Israeli forces denied accountability,
08:08accusing Palestine of inflating death tolls.
08:12Regardless, most media outlets assure the fact-checking of the massacres.
08:20In other topics, protests demanding the dismissal of Abel Hamid Dabba,
08:29the head of the Government of National Accord,
08:32continue in Libya amid intensified clashes and a wave of violence over the past year.
08:38On Wednesday night, a crowd gathered around the government office in Tripoli,
08:42demanding the removal of the entire government.
08:45Despite the call to stop the clashes,
08:46protesters claimed that gunfire broke out in several areas of the city.
08:51Since the assassination of Omar Gaddafi in 2011,
08:55Libya has been plagued by violence and divided into two governments,
08:59one backed by the UN in Tripoli
09:02and the other supported by the House of Representatives in Benghazi.
09:06Now we have a short break coming up,

09:21Welcome back to From the South.
09:42The Colombian Senate rejected on Wednesday the government's proposed popular consultation,
09:47an initiative aimed at promoting the labor reform.
09:50With 49 votes against and 47 in favor,
09:54the Senate plenary rejected the initiative of Gustavo Petro's administration.
09:59In response, the Colombian head of state accused the body of committing a fraud
10:03and called on the People Workers Union to mobilize together with community action boards,
10:09youth committees and indigenous movements.
10:11The proposed consultation addressed issues such as the reduction of the eight-hour working day,
10:17leave for health reasons, decent wages for farmers and the end of outsourcing, among others.
10:24In this context, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, described as a disaster the collapse of the popular consultation in the Senate
10:39and blamed Uribismo for the use of political maneuvers to block the initiative.
10:45Through his ex-account, the Colombian head of state highlighted Uribismo sunk the labor reform in the 7th commission.
10:53And as we revived it as a consultation, now it sinks the consultation to revive the same labor reform it sunk in the 7th commission.
11:03A party disaster.
11:04The biggest disaster was that they had to take away the vote of more than a dozen legislators who were going to vote yes
11:12and they had to sink the consultation with the vote of a convicted Uribista.
11:18Never in contemporary history had it happened that a lawmaker was taken out of jail to vote
11:25and sink the rights of the working people.
11:27That is a real disaster for the Senate and for democracy.
11:30The opprobrium they have committed must have cost a lot.
11:35Now they will try to sink again the bill I presented two years ago to Congress,
11:41but it is the people who must give their answer.
11:44They talk about defeats the Senate has defeated itself by silencing the people's power,
11:51which is its very source, and by using a convict for a pyrrhic victory
11:57that the people will sink into the history of infamy.
12:10In this regard, social organizations, indigenous groups, gender and cultural movements,
12:15and other sectors of Colombian society demonstrated on Wednesday night
12:19following the Senate's rejection of the popular consultation.
12:22Calls spread through social networks with peaceful demonstrations taking place in various communities.
12:29In the capital city of Bogotá, people gathered in parks in front of the city hall
12:34while in Medellín popular assemblies were held and protests were organized simultaneously.
12:40The actions, which continued until early Thursday morning,
12:44denounced fraud in the counting of Senate votes
12:47as several parliamentarians claimed that the order and agenda were altered arbitrarily
12:53and the voting process was disorganized.
13:03And the strike against the government imposed insurance law in Panama
13:07has lasted 24 consecutive days, paralyzing key sectors
13:12such as education, construction and food production.
13:16Workers and teachers union have expressed their rejection
13:20through road blockades, marches, rallies and work stoppages.
13:24Demonstrators point out that this government measure plunders the social security funds,
13:30hands over funds to private banks, raises the retirement age
13:33and privatizes services and tracts,
13:36accused the Molino government of violating freedom of association
13:40and seeking to arrest union leaders.
13:46The Metallurgical Workers Union in Argentina is carrying out a total indefinite strike
13:53in rejection of Javier Mille's government's declaration
13:56to eliminate tariffs on cell phone imports.
13:59The metal workers of Tierra del Fuego state that the measure
14:03is a direct response to the official announcement
14:06that negatively impact the local productive structure.
14:10They also warn that more than 6,000 people could lose their jobs.
14:14The union has called for a mobilization in the center of Rio Grande,
14:18where many industrial companies are located.
14:29And funeral ceremonies for former President Jose Pepe Mujica
14:32are continuing in the Legislative Palace in Montevideo, Uruguay.
14:36Thousands of people pay tribute to Mujica accompanying the procession
14:41that stopped in front of the headquarters of the National Liberation Movement,
14:46the Broad Front and the Popular Participation Movement.
14:49The procession concluded at the Legislative Palace.
14:52Authorities reported that more than 40 diplomatic delegations,
14:56including President Yaman Duorzi,
14:58paid their respects to the former president.
15:00On Thursday at 9 a.m. local time,
15:03access to the palace was reopened
15:05in anticipation of the arrival of other dignitaries.

15:54China announced on Thursday the decision
15:56to grant a visa-free policy for nationals
15:59of five Latin American countries,
16:01a measure reportedly aimed at further facilitating international travel.
16:05To further facilitate cross-border travel,
16:09China decided to include more countries in its visa waiver program
16:12and extend the visa-free policy to ordinary passport holders
16:15from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay
16:18on a trial basis from 1 June 2025 to May 31, 2026.
16:23Ordinary passport holders from the above-mentioned five countries
16:26can be exempted from visa to enter China
16:28and stay for no more than 30 days for business, tourism,
16:31family and friends visit, exchange and transit purposes.
16:34China remains committed to high-level opening up
16:36and will take more steps to make travel easier
16:38between China and other countries.
16:41In other news, the Mexican government
16:43and the National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores
16:46and TAD have signed a deal
16:48to gradually increase the marketing of products
16:51with the Made in Mexico brand
16:53in an effort to strengthen their domestic economy
16:55and reduce imports.
16:57On a private meeting at the National Palace,
16:59Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum underscored
17:03the benefits of fostering goods made in the country.
17:06In turn, the Orgo CEO and TAD's CEO
17:08stated that such commitment was aimed
17:11at substituting imported products with national options.
17:15The deal is part of the Mexican plan of action,
17:17so it comes shortly after the renewal
17:19of the package against inflation and high prices,
17:23which seeks to maintain accessible prices
17:25in the basic food basket.
17:32On the meeting, the Made in Mexico program was approved.
17:35All the most paramount chains affiliated with Antat
17:38were present, as well as other chains
17:41and online companies.
17:42Everything was working out very well.
17:44The commitment is to make grow both the product
17:45and manufacture with Mexican value in the upcoming years,
17:48and there will also be one in all stores.
17:55We are talking about percentages right now
17:59because you have to look at it by categories,
18:01what you can replace and what you cannot,
18:02but it is a great program linked to the Mexico legacy plan
18:05and the commitment to boost the country's growth
18:07is all over the country.
18:10And with six months to go until COP30,
18:13the 19th International Conference
18:15on Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change
18:18is underway in Recife, Brazil.
18:20Our correspondent, Brian Mir, has more.
18:22In a context of increasing climate change disasters
18:26around the world,
18:28the 19th Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change Conference
18:31is underway in Recife.
18:33Brazil's National Union for People's Housing, or UNMP,
18:37is participating in the event to raise awareness
18:40of the potential of converting vacant buildings
18:42in downtown areas to social housing
18:44as a strategy for disaster risk mitigation.
18:47I used to live in a settlement of plastic tarp
18:52and clubboard shacks.
18:55Whenever there were strong winds,
18:57the shacks would blow down.
19:00And when it rained a lot, it flooded.
19:03This gave us the feeling that we were going to die.
19:07So when everything got back to normal,
19:09all we could do is thank God and keep fighting.
19:12An estimated 6.2 million Brazilian families
19:15lack access to dignified housing.
19:17But the census shows this deficit
19:19could be completely eliminated
19:20by converting thousands of abandoned government buildings
19:23in towns and cities across the country
19:25into social housing.
19:27Although the 1988 Constitution
19:29requires the government to do this,
19:31it usually only happens in cases
19:33of well-coordinated occupations
19:35putting pressure on local authorities.
19:37Moving families who live on the periphery
19:43to downtown areas
19:44reduces risks caused by climate change.
19:51Because, first of all,
19:52the vacant buildings have already been built.
19:56All they need is a reform.
19:59And most importantly,
20:01you are relocating families
20:02from risk zones on hillsides,
20:04riverbanks and floodplains.
20:06As places like Recife,
20:08the world's 18th most vulnerable city
20:10to climate change,
20:11deal with more frequent
20:13and more intense flooding disasters,
20:15social movements and housing activists
20:17are raising their voices
20:18in international spaces like CBA-19
20:21to highlight how enabling the poor
20:23to move to downtown areas
20:24improves the quality of life.
20:29The Polis Institute conducted a study last year
20:32that clearly demonstrates
20:33ways that converting empty buildings
20:35in central areas
20:36to social housing
20:39can promote climate change adaptation
20:41and mitigate damage
20:42because it moves people
20:45closer to their employment,
20:47leisure and education.
20:49CBA-19 will continue
20:51until May 16th.
