00:00The End
00:21He's so small.
00:24He's so vulnerable.
00:26He will have enemies.
00:32This kingdom is ours.
00:34Nobody is going to take it from us.
00:41We killed them all.
00:43Every single.
00:45What?
00:46You cannot silence the mind of God, Antipas!
00:49He's not a prophet.
00:51Just an ordinary man who bleeds at everyone else.
00:58Give me the head of John the Baptist or a platter.
01:06You can't do everything on your own.
01:08They need me.
01:10There will be no mercy.
01:15Who am I?
01:19I worship only the Lord God!
01:26What did you say?
01:30Everything.
01:32The End
01:35The End
01:45The End
01:50It hurts.
01:53Woah.
01:56We stop.
01:57We stop.
01:58Your farms are now the property of King Herod.
02:17Leave now, or face the consequences.
02:22This is our land.
02:24No man, not even a king.
02:27Can't say otherwise.
02:28Everything you can see belongs to my father.
02:39The ground you stand on, that hovel you call a home, your children, your wife, all King Herod's.
02:49The days are coming when I will raise up for David, a king.
02:55I will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.
03:03The Lord our Savior, the Messiah.
03:06There is no Messiah.
03:10And if you want a prophecy, then here's mine.
03:14You raise a hand against King Herod, and you'll lose it.
03:18You have until nightfall to leave.
03:33Be grateful for the king's mercy.
03:35On the eve of Jesus' birth, many Jews hold out hope for a savior, someone who will rescue
03:45them from the tyranny of King Herod, and someone who will relieve them from the tyranny of the
03:53Roman Empire.
03:54Jesus is born into a world where every bit of land, everybody's life is touched by the Roman Empire.
04:12It's extending from the Atlantic, really, all the way over to the other side of the Mediterranean.
04:20It encompasses three continents and the equivalent of about 30 modern-day countries.
04:26Like many territories in their empire, the Romans don't rule Judea directly.
04:34The Romans have established a local Jewish ruler, a client king to rule in their place,
04:41Herod the Great.
04:42Our priests sacrifice daily to bring the Roman emperor favor from our god.
04:59The emperor thinks it's best to send his right-hand man, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa,
05:04to go into Jerusalem and check on the client king, Herod the Great.
05:09Implicit in the relationship with Rome is that Herod will keep the peace and that he will assure
05:19that things like taxes are collected and passed on to the Romans.
05:24If you look above, you can see our latest addition, the symbol of your legions and the lasting symbol
05:31of our union, handcrafted by the finest stonemason in Judea.
05:39Herod decides to place an eagle over one of the gates of the temple.
05:46For the Jewish people in the first century, the temple in Jerusalem was the home of God on earth.
05:55This eagle is incredibly controversial.
06:00For many Jews, this is a sacrilege.
06:04Instead of being a defender of the Jewish faith, to them it seems as if Herod is just a puppet of Rome.
06:10Very impressive.
06:15And what is the local situation?
06:19There is no situation.
06:22Judea is at peace.
06:24Safe under my firm hand.
06:27And Rome's continued friendship.
06:30Judea, during this period, is absolutely not stable.
06:36Herod has done things like he's built his palace next to the Jewish temple in Jerusalem.
06:42And around that, he's actually fortified it.
06:44He's turned it into a fortress with Roman soldiers stationed around this,
06:50watching what's happening around the temple.
06:52Herod is a man who is obsessed with power solely for the sake of power.
07:00And he sees everyone around him, including his closest family members,
07:05as a potential threat to that power.
07:10The emperor was sorry to hear about your wife's sad passing.
07:19Families.
07:19Herod the Great is a man of unhealthy, even infamous, appetite.
07:35Like many rulers in the ancient world, he had multiple wives.
07:39In his case, he has ten wives and nine sons, at least nine sons.
07:43The wife he loved the most, Marianne, was executed on his orders in 29 B.C.,
07:55when he became convinced that she was plotting against him.
08:06Hello, my beloved.
08:08Herod was so deeply in love with Mariamne that even after her death, he wanted her to be with him.
08:34And so he, according to rabbinic legend, had her body preserved in honey and would periodically go to visit her.
08:50This is the man who, in the Gospel of Matthew, will pose the first threat to the life of Jesus.
08:57A man capable of doing absolutely anything.
09:01A real monster.
09:02The town of Nazareth, where Mary and Joseph are betrothed,
09:28sits in stark contrast to the opulence and political intrigue of Jerusalem.
09:34Nazareth is a backwater village with a population of perhaps only a hundred.
09:40That's it.
09:46Jewish tradition dictates that a marriage contract is signed,
09:51and then there would have been a period of about a year before the actual marriage took place.
09:55I hereby present this document to you.
10:01It spells out my obligations to you in our impending marriage.
10:15I'm a very lucky man.
10:17I've spent my whole life with my parents.
10:22The house I was born in is all I know.
10:27Mary is a Jewish girl.
10:31Mary and Joseph's families probably have known each other for a really long time.
10:35We think this is going to be a good match.
10:38She hasn't been with a man.
10:40She is appropriately a virgin, saving herself for marriage, as would have everyone in the culture.
10:46These hands are building us a home.
10:50And these same hands will protect you and the children we will have with my life if necessary.
10:58I will never let you fall.
11:08Joseph is described as a tecton, which most people think of as a carpenter, but it actually means a builder.
11:16So you'd have to think of Joseph as being pretty physically fit, a strong and capable presence.
11:25The status of a tecton is debated by scholars, but it's probably on a lower rung than a peasant,
11:33because peasants at least own their own land.
11:35Except in the months before Jesus' birth, King Herod is tearing up tradition.
11:47He's kicked Jewish peasants off their land and driving them towards rebellion.
11:56Just one day.
12:01How is it that in just one day, a single man can take everything?
12:05All that we worked for.
12:09Our homes.
12:12Our land.
12:15Where is the justice?
12:18Where is the Messiah?
12:22Send him!
12:27Particularly in this period, with the Roman Empire now ostensibly in control of Judea,
12:34among the common, everyday Jewish people, there was a sense, almost a longing,
12:40that a Messiah must be on the way.
12:47The Jewish people are looking for a Messiah who will come with a sword
12:51and leave behind a whole trail of blood in order to bring the Jews to freedom.
12:56But in the Gospel story, what they're going to get is a baby.
13:02God loves you.
13:03Don't be afraid, Mary.
13:10God loves you.
13:24Soon you will become pregnant and give birth to a son and name him Jesus.
13:43He will become a great man and will be called son of the Most High.
13:51And the Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor, David.
13:59How can this be? I am still a virgin.
14:06The Holy Spirit will embrace you and the power of the Most High will shine upon you.
14:14And the child you will bear shall be called the Son of God.
14:23The Annunciation is the word that we give to Angel Gabriel's visit to Mary where he tells her that she is going to give birth to the Messiah.
14:33For Mary, it would have been really very frightening for her.
14:42When it comes down to it, she would be young, she would be unmarried, and she would be pregnant.
14:47But Mary leans totally in.
14:52She knows that her people are expecting a Messiah.
14:56She knows that her people are in a time of occupation and empire.
15:01And so she erupts in this song of liberation.
15:04My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
15:13For he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
15:18From now on, all generations will call me blessed.
15:23For the Mighty One has done great things for me.
15:28Holy is his name.
15:29Amen.
15:29Amen.
15:34Your cousin Elizabeth, she who is unable to conceive, despite her old age, will also bear a child.
15:47For no word from God will ever fail.
16:04I don't understand.
16:15It'll only be a few weeks.
16:18The roads are not safe.
16:21I cannot leave my work.
16:23Is it so important to see Elizabeth?
16:27Very.
16:28Very.
16:28When Mary makes a trip to go and see Elizabeth, Mary is looking for someone to confirm that
16:52she's not crazy.
16:53I always find the Elizabeth and Mary encounter so affirming.
17:06Here is Elizabeth, an older relative, cousin of Mary, who gives birth to a prophesied son,
17:16John the Baptist.
17:17And so this is a confirmation that Mary did, in fact, have a visit from Gabriel.
17:45And what that means for her is that she is carrying the prophesied Messiah.
17:53John the Baptist and Jesus, they are family.
18:00No word of God will ever fail.
18:02No.
18:02No.
18:04No.
18:05No.
18:06No.

18:43No.
18:44No.
18:45No.
18:46No.
18:47No.

19:05No.
19:06No.
19:07No.
19:08No.
19:09No.
19:10It costs thousands of gold shekels, and you destroyed it.
19:22The ancient Jewish historian Josephus tells us that an eagle was installed on the temple grounds,
19:29and that some Jewish rebels came and tore it down.
19:33The eagle is a direct insult, a direct attack on the Jewish god,
19:40and the rebels themselves are prepared, if necessary, to be martyred, to die,
19:48in order to take down this sign of a foreign god that has invaded his most sacred of spaces.
19:58Who am I?
20:03Who am I?
20:09You are King Elrond.
20:14Elrond King of what?
20:19Who just...
20:21Yes, the Jews.
20:26And yet you dare to desecrate the temple that I built?
20:30I could slit your throat right here.
20:45A quick death.
20:49I won't cut your throat.
20:57Lots of mess.
21:02Flies.
21:04Inconvenience.
21:09No.
21:12You shall be burned.
21:19Alive.
21:20All of you.
21:47What's happened?
22:05My cousin has had a child.
22:08But...
22:08Joseph.
22:10I need you to listen to me.
22:14What I'm going to tell you
22:15is going to be hard to understand.
22:29It's a miracle.
22:40So Mary goes away for three months
22:42and then returns
22:43and now she's pregnant.
22:45Now imagine being Joseph
22:49and hearing that from your fiancée.
22:53It must have ripped Joseph's heart out.
22:59Joseph is a pious person
23:01and like most Jews,
23:03he believes in miracles.
23:05He just doesn't believe
23:06they're going to happen in his case
23:08and especially not like this.
23:11In a small town like Nazareth
23:14and really all over Galilee and Judea,
23:17bearing a child out of wedlock
23:19would have been a scandal.
23:21Ancient Jewish laws were unforgiving.
23:24So Mary would have faced
23:26a potential death sentence by stoning.
23:30I cannot.
23:31I will not shame you.
23:42You will go away to relatives
23:44until the child is born.
23:46I will not be able to breathe.
23:48I will not.
23:50I will not go away to her.
23:51I will not have an angel,
23:51but I will not be able to be able to breathe.
23:53I will not be able to breathe.
23:54In the ancient world, people believed that dreams were a mechanism by which
24:24God could directly communicate to someone.
24:34Joseph, descendant of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife.
24:44The baby she carries is from the Holy Spirit.
24:48She will give birth to a son, and you ought to give him the name Jesus, because he will
24:59save his people from their sins.
25:01The Holy Spirit
25:31I come to your house, Joachim, for you to give me your daughter, Mary.
25:46To be my wife.
26:01And I will be your husband, from today and forever.
26:16Because of the dream, Joseph accepts fully the responsibility of caring for Mary and her
26:25son, and then goes ahead with the marriage.
26:29Mary and Joseph want to do everything to protect this child.
26:32This human baby born to Mary is also God's child, and they are responsible for this future
26:43for humankind.
26:44Who should I, the great King Herod, fear?
27:06Her body, father.
27:07So why burn these fanatics?
27:17A fire can be started by the smallest spark.
27:23We have to stamp it out before it catches hold and destroys everything.
27:34This kingdom is ours.
27:38Nobody is going to take it from us.
27:40Nobody is going to take it from us.
27:45We have to stamp it from us.
27:59We will be done.
28:01We will be done.
28:05We will be done.
