Taste Testing Two 20-Year-Old Bottles of Charles Shaw Wine

Spoiler alert: These wines from 2004 and 2005 have radically changed with age. In this video, two wine connoisseurs from Food & Wine pop open two bottles of 20 year-old Charles Shaw wine to see how well the taste holds up.

00:03Today we have something really special for you.

00:06Our colleague Dawn found two bottles of absolutely unicorn wines in her parents' closet.

00:10Today we're tasting...

00:1220-year-old 2 Buck Chuck.

00:14Two Charles Shaw wines, one from 2004, one from 2005.

00:182 Buck Chuck deserves the two-fisted four.

00:20Oh my goodness.

00:22That's like I'm impressed, Ray.

00:24That's not a good color for Chardonnay.

00:25Oh.

00:26It's not a good smell for Chardonnay either.

00:27Oh.

00:28Oh, oh, it gets really bad.

00:32Yeah, it gets worse as it goes.

00:33I mean, it was in a closet for 20 years.

00:35Not only does it smell a little like a closet that's been closed up for 20 years.

00:38A little dusty.

00:39Now we're trying the current vintage, 2023.

00:41This was interesting, but lucky us, we also have our Shiraz that's even older.

00:46Ray poured two bottles with two hands at the same time, so now I must.

00:492 Buck Chuck Shiraz.

00:52Shiraz.

00:52Notably not Syrah.

00:54Oh, so wet.

00:56There's very little joy to be added in that wine.

00:59Oh.

01:01It's so bad.

01:01We thought that the Shiraz would have aged more gracefully than the Chardonnay, given

01:06that Shiraz is a red wine, there's tannins, there's a bit more structure, and those are

01:10things that typically help aging, but something went horrifically wrong here.

01:16So let's try current vintage, 2022 Shiraz.

01:20It's not a great wine, but it's a drinkable wine.

01:23Totally fine.

01:24It's a little watery.

01:24A little watery.

01:25A little thin.
