Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann. New research by the University of San Francisco in California
00:06
has suggested that low levels of this essential vitamin could increase your risk of developing
00:11
dementia. B12 is an essential vitamin that helps maintain our brain function. Participants
00:19
in the study who had lower levels of B12 were found to have slower cognitive and visual
00:24
processing needs. As we get older, our body's ability to absorb B12 from the food that we
00:32
eat may decrease. However, there are ways that we can raise our vitamin B12 levels.
00:38
Niamh McMillan, Superdrugs Pharmacy superintendent, advises that we can do this by eating foods
00:43
that are high in vitamin B12, such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy. We can also take vitamin
00:49
B12 supplements and check for underlying conditions that may affect how our body absorbs B12, such
00:56
as gastrointestinal illnesses. To find out more about B12, signs and symptoms of low B12 levels
01:04
and treatments available, check out nhs.uk.
