00:00In the United States authorities report the first economic contraction in three years as
00:16a result of President Trump's tariff policy. India announced the closure of its airspace
00:26to all aircraft registered, operated or leased by Pakistan and Russia and North Korea began
00:35constructing their first ever road bridge on the Tumen River.
00:46Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Edele-Sou Studios in Coracas, Venezuela.
00:51We begin with the news. Stay with us.
00:56The United States reported its first economic contraction in three years as a result of President Donald Trump's tariff policy.
01:16The Commerce Department released the data in its report on Wednesday previewing the drop in gross domestic product
01:22that caused consumer business activity to slow sharply.
01:26The report reinforced U.S. citizens' growing disapproval of Trump's mishandling of the economy as it reached 100 days in office.
01:35The economic contraction was swamped by increased imports as businesses competed to avoid higher costs from the tariff war.
01:43As a result, consumer confidence is near a five-year low and business activity has slowed.
01:58And U.S. President Donald Trump blamed the Joe Biden administration Wednesday after a new report showed the first decline in U.S. economy in three years.
02:06The statement was made during a cabinet meeting where the Republican president said this is Biden's stock market, not Trump's.
02:13The country will bloom, but we have to get rid of the Biden overhang.
02:17This will take a while. It has nothing to do with tariffs and only that he left us with bad numbers.
02:23But when the boom begins, it will be like no other. Be patient.
02:27And several voices are raising in the political sphere against Donald Trump's administration as the head of state marks 100 days into his second mandate.
02:44In this scenario, Democratic governor for the state of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, delivered a keynote speech at a Democratic fundraiser in New Hampshire on Sunday,
02:53criticizing both Republicans and fellow Democrats.
02:57Pritzker urged citizens to pressure congressional Republicans to oppose Trump's agenda and highlighted how the president's policies affect his state.
03:06In addition, the governor defended the positive role of migrants in the enrichment of U.S. society and its economy.
03:12In this context, the governor called for mass mobilization against what he qualified as a destructive administration.
03:23Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption, but I am now.
03:32These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace.
03:49They have to understand that we will fight their cruelty with every megaphone and microphone that we have.
03:56We must castigate them on the soapbox and then punish them at the ballot box.
04:01In other topics, in Brazil, as a youth from the Capinagua indigenous nation was surfing the Internet, he discovered that someone was trying to auction off their land.
04:11A correspondent Bram here with the details.
04:14In the Katimbau Valley in rural Pernambuco, the Capinagua indigenous nation has scored a legal victory as public prosecutors ordered a local court to block the auction of 126 hectares of land located partially inside its reserve and partially in traditional lands currently under review to be turned over to the nation, which has been living in the area since the 1700s.
04:38There was no public hearing, we were taken by surprise.
04:45One of us was messing around on the internet and suddenly found out that there were 126 hectares of our land, land belonging to the Capinagua that was about to sold by auction, with the date already set only a few weeks off.
04:57So we started fighting it.
05:00Part of the Katimbau Valley region was turned into a national park in 2002, and growing interest in tourism in the area has led to real estate speculation.
05:10Furthermore, capitalizing on favorable weather conditions and government subsidies for renewable energy, private wind turbine companies have been moving into the area, often pressuring poor farmers with low literacy rates into accepting predatory land lease contracts.
05:25We had a meeting with a wind turbine company, and we didn't accept their offer.
05:37We explained that we didn't want them building on our land, we didn't want this project here.
05:42Then, eight or nine days after they left, we found out about this auction.
05:49As the Capinua fight for their right to expand their reserve to incorporate all of their traditional villages in the area, they're also fighting predatory real estate speculators as they try to encroach onto their land, a familiar problem for indigenous peoples across the Americas.
