00:00Welcome back. Portugal is bracing for a general strike on Thursday, the first one the country faces in 12 years.
00:06Portugal's two main unions have called the strike to protest against a new labor package announced by the center-right government of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro.
00:16The strike was called by General Confederation of the Portuguese Workers and then joined by the General Union of Workers.
00:22The 24-hour strike is expected to affect all public services and the private sector. Some of the areas most impacted are likely to be public transport, airports, schools and hospitals.
00:38This is the first general strike Portugal faces in 12 years. The last one was during the economic crisis when the country faced a bailout and its consequences.
00:47Let's go deeper into the matter. Montenegro's government has stated that the proposed measures aim to add flexibility to the job market, but opponents argue that they are an attack on workers' rights.
01:02Among the most contested elements are a limit on how long breastfeeding women can claim a flexible work schedule as well as a reduction in miscarriage morning leave.
01:13These reforms will also make it easier for employers to dismiss workers.
01:25Those here, these workers here, are the ones that make a difference every day in our lives.
01:31They are the reality of the country, and they are the ones that live with low salaries, deregulation of work schedules, precarious work,
01:39and are exercising today a right, that the government also wants to weaken, the right to strike.
01:45They are today doing something that is their own right, and that allows for them to balance a scale that is increasingly unbalanced by exercising the right to strike.
01:55So in this moment of the start of the general strike, there is a message that CGTP wants to convey to all workers, to fight.
02:02...how to try and learn a name, will it be a bit more robust, and that must be suitable for all workers, to try and serve them.
02:11So in this moment, I believe my sits at the same time, I believe in FN, I believe that is actually a problem for all workers, and I believe in FN.
02:15I believe in FN, I believe in FN, I believe in FN is an optimist, the letter of the record for all workers, but I believe in FN, I believe in FN, I believe in FN, I believe in FN...
