The Coke Hearth Improvement Group is running a photo competition and you get to pick the winner. The photos are online but they have also used a local bus shelter as a revolving art gallery, with the first set of photos now on display. We pop along to find out more.

00:00So we're here at a bus stop, but it's not just a bus stop is it ladies? It's an art gallery!
00:10It's a free little gallery in Culbrookdale. So we're in Culbrookdale just opposite the
00:15community centre and you represent a particular group, go on what's it called? The Coke Half
00:19Improvement Group. What is Coke Half? Is that an area? You're at the Coke Half now and in fact the
00:25green behind is the area where Coke was first smelted. It used to smelt the iron ore I think.
00:32Ah I've got you. So we've got a Maureen and a Jean. You have. And what's going on with
00:38your sex ambition then? Well this is the fifth year we've run our photographic competition and this
00:46is the first set of photographs that people submit to the group and we print them off. We display them
00:52in sets and here and you've got the information there about the photographers and there'll be
00:58two more sets and they're also posted on our Facebook page people are invited to like the
01:05photograph more than one they can like and the one they get to see total likes is goes on permanent
01:10display in the community centre. Ah fantastic awesome work and it's been going for how long three years
01:16you say? This is the fifth year. Fifth year sorry. Oh wow. So how long has the Coke Half Improvement
01:22Group been going? 2018 weren't we? I think we started. Before Covid 2018. So what's kind of the mission
01:31statement and when it says improvements what what you know what are you all about? What do you do? Well we
01:35felt this area as the entrance to the World Heritage Site was a bit shabby. Yeah. It didn't present a very good
01:41impression did it. So we've done lots of improvements. Yeah. All the planting up of the flowers and the
01:48plants owned by the children's play area. You can thank Maureen for most of that. Thank you Maureen.
01:53She's our gardener in chief. We were donated the cast iron bench ends and we have them made up into
02:02benches 12 of them and we sighted them up in various places around Colbertdale. Yeah. Including up Derby
02:09road over by the bus stop over there all around the place and because we're particularly interested
02:16in commemorating the closure of the Dale works we there's a sculpture at the end of the green here.
02:23Yeah. An anvil depicting the end of the works. And so where did the idea come from to use the bus stop
02:32as the gallery? Is that just because it was here and it worked and it's where people can sit and peruse
02:38them? Yeah. It is really and also we use it for other times of the year. I mean you've missed the Easter
02:43display and local people crochet all sorts of this time it was an Easter egg and things and also it
02:51makes a marvellous um Christmas scene. It's perfect so there's always that Christmas here. That's the
02:56sort of subgroup that does that isn't it? Yes. Crochet people and crochet people who've done all that work
03:04and beautiful work they have done indeed. Yes. But I think one of the reasons we also started was
03:08because we rescued one of these cast iron um cauldrons from outside the Arga works when they're closed.
03:16Yeah. And so um we decided to look to match the existing one here. Oh wow. And we're at Sibley
03:21Rescue um we've got a cast iron light which we're looking to put on. Our lampposts to put on here. Oh wow.
03:28With fundraising and trying to do that. Yeah. Bulls Court over there we've got grounds for. Oh is that a
03:35Bulls Court? It is. Oh fantastic. And the picnic tables in there. Yeah. Wow so it really has got its own
03:41little identity hasn't it this area. Oh very much. A defibrillator we've got a ground four to put on. Yeah.
03:46And one up on Sunnyside a second defibrillator. Yes. We've just done that last month. Yes.
03:50Little libraries. Children's and adults. Children's and adults three little libraries. What else have we
03:54done in there? Yes well you've also got a little special open garden event coming up around here haven't
03:59you? Um yes we have. Kind of linking in. Um on the weekend of the 7th and 8th of June. Yeah. Um we will be having our
04:07open garden event. It's a third year running. Fantastic. And the air crow festival. And said um
04:14I'm sorry somebody's gesticulated trying to tell me. Oh yes up on Sunnyside. Yeah. We um also had um
04:22a pocket parks grant of over 20 odd thousand pounds. Yeah yeah. Adult gym equipment over there. Yeah.
04:31Fantastic. Lots of things. But the open garden yes it's our next event coming up
04:36the 7th and 8th of June. Yeah. About 12 to 15 gardens in Colbertdale will be uh opening their
04:43gates. We're very grateful for them doing that. And lots of other people will be putting scarecrows
04:48dotted about all over the place. Scarecrows as well as open gardens. Yes. Well I'm going to put you on
04:53the spot now. So out of this little selection first off Jean which is your favourite? You can't. I don't vote
04:59deliberately. Yeah I was going to say. I know one of them is doing very well on Facebook. Which one's doing
05:07well so far then? But um I think I quite like the moodiness of that. Yeah. It's a bit different.
05:16Atmospheric. Yeah. And uh Maureen any particular one catching your eye? Um again probably I'm assuming we
05:23seem to have got quite a lot of atmospheric ones. Yeah. And um yeah yes it's it's yeah I I like it.
05:31That one you know the symmetry in there. Yeah. And uh yeah but of course there's another two batches
05:37to come. Yeah yeah. We can't really have it. Some other strength to keep in photographs to go and get.
05:42Awesome work guys. Well it's just over the road from the um museum ingenuity and uh just pop your head
05:49over here guys and take a look and get voting. Please do.
