The guys share their thoughts on the Miami Dolphins Draft Class over the weekend. The Miami Dolphins finished their NFL draft on Saturday selecting a bruising RB Ollie Gordan. In the 7th round they went on to select Texas QB Quinn Ewers.
Transcript
00:00Over the weekend, the Miami Dolphins in their draft.
00:03On Thursday night, they take Kenneth Grant, defensive tackle from Michigan.
00:09And in the second round, they take Jonah Savat-Inaya from Arizona,
00:15offensive lineman.
00:17They take Jordan Phillips in the first round.
00:19Another Jordan Phillips.
00:21New Jordan Phillips.
00:22Isn't that crazy?
00:24It is a little bit weird.
00:26Where's school?
00:26If he went to Texas, he'd be scared.
00:28Okay.
00:30They drafted two guys from Maryland.
00:31They did draft two guys from Maryland.
00:33They also drafted Dante Trader, a safety.
00:36They drafted Jason Marshall Jr., a cornerback from Florida.
00:40One everybody's really intrigued by is their sixth round pick.
00:44They took Ollie Gordon II, a running back from Oklahoma State.
00:47Moose was the league-leading rusher in 2023.
00:52Took a little bit of a step back last year.
00:55But obviously, an intriguing addition.
00:58Different type of running back than the Miami Dolphins.
00:59Dolphins have had with a lot of the speed, small guys.
01:03This guy is a moose.
01:06So, that'll be intriguing to see what they can do with him.
01:09Talked about Quinn Ewers.
01:11He was drafted in the seventh round by the Dolphins.
01:13Quarterback from Texas.
01:14And Zeke Biggers, defensive tackle from Georgia Tech.
01:18He's like 6'6", 3", a lot.
01:21That's it.
01:21Hey, what did I tell you I wanted the theme of this draft to be?
01:25Bad guy.
01:27Big.
01:29Big.
01:30But yeah, at some point, there was a time where people were wondering, and even I think it was thrown out by a couple of draft analysts, would Shador Sanders end up in Miami?
01:42And then, here was what Chris Greer had to say when asked if it was a conversation the Dolphins had at any point on that day three when he just continued to slide.
01:54Was Shador Sanders considered it at any point?
01:57Yes.
01:57We had lots of discussions about him today.
02:00Yeah.
02:01Wow.
02:02All right.
02:03They had lots of discussions about.
02:05And I would say, he couldn't be farther from the type of quarterback this team needs.
02:16And I say it this way.
02:21Tua is unique in that he makes anticipatory throws.
02:27In an area of the field that quarterbacks hate throwing the football.
02:32And that is the middle of the field.
02:34He's accurate.
02:36Okay.
02:39I don't know if Shador is that.
02:41And you want, when you bring a quarterback in to back up your quarterback, you want him to have some of the qualities to build on that if he has to play, your transition to that won't have to be too extreme.
03:04You want to have to have a whole new offense.
03:07And so, it has nothing to do with whether, see, if Shador was as big as Ben Roethlisberger, then the style of quarterbacking he played would be fine.
03:20But he's not.
03:23He's tiny.
03:25So, that makes it hard to play the style of football that he has played at this level.
03:33And I think that was a deterrent more than him.
03:36He's bigger than Tua, though.
03:38Yeah.
03:38Taller.
03:40I mean, all right.
03:41I mean, we're being, it's semantics.
03:44They're same size, basically.
03:47Like, Tua is not a big guy.
03:49Right.
03:50Tua, you know, Tua is not a big guy.
03:51Not a guy who can see over his line.
03:54But this is the thing, though, Leroy.
03:56Like, what you're saying, I guess, makes sense.
03:58But when you get to a point, if you have a quarterback who has durability issues and you do have, let's say, I guess you don't want to say he's a first-round talent, but a highly thought-of quarterback.
04:09And he is dropping.
04:10And you have, look, obviously, they wanted to put somebody in the room because they drafted Quinn Ewers.
04:14So, they did want to add some youth there.
04:17Um, I think the thing with the Dolphins, though, that, like, can't be ignored with it is, like, look, everything with Tua is a thing.
04:26Just is.
04:27Like, he's, he is one of these quarterbacks that just, like, it's always polarizing.
04:32It's always a topic.
04:32Like, I mean, to add Shador Sanders to that, to that team.
04:39I mean, dude, people are going to be doing quarterback controversy every single week down here.
04:45People want Tua gone.
04:47And?
04:47And teams go away from that.
04:50Look, teams don't even have that issue, didn't want him because of that stuff.
04:54You don't think there's a T-Bow element to this?
04:56Where people are like, we don't want that.
04:58We don't want that dynamic.
05:00Um, yeah, but somebody still drafted T-Bow in the first round.
05:04I know.
05:05I know.
05:05I would say, I would say, I would say this.
05:10If the talent was there, nobody would care.
05:16Because, guess what?
05:18Yeah, for sure.
05:18If there was.
05:19But there's obviously questions of the talent.
05:22There are obviously questions about his attitude in the whole draft process.
05:25But I'm talking about bring a guy in with a high-profile name.
05:31With whatever his credentials were in college.
05:33Which were good.
05:34Right.
05:34A player.
05:35Yeah.
05:35And then you add on top of it a quarterback.
05:38With Tua.
05:39Can't stay healthy.
05:41People already are like, ah, is he the guy?
05:43Is he not the guy?
05:44Dude, I mean, you want to talk about, it would have made our lives easier.
05:47That would have been like, I mean, everybody every week would have been like,
05:50is it Shador time?
05:51Is it Shador time?
05:52Those people don't know football.
05:55That's fine, Leroy.
05:56But, well, I mean, like, you're going to be dealing with that too.
05:58Like, with Cleveland.
05:59It's going to be a thing.
05:59It's just less so because they don't have a quarterback.
06:02But even if Deshaun Watson was healthy
06:04and they made this decision.
06:06That would have been a thing of when they're going to pull the switch off.
06:08But here's the whole problem I have with all this and everything you're saying.
06:15All the stuff that you're saying could be accurate.
06:18But the people that would have a problem and bring questions into the mix
06:23are the people that are showing they don't know enough about football.
06:29Like, yeah, it's a new name.
06:30It's a brand name.
06:33It's a guy who's going to garner a lot of attention.
06:37But at some point, you have to acknowledge his ability.
06:41Okay, I don't care what the name is.
06:46Yeah, but that's the thing is when you're already in a situation.
06:48I'm talking about that first season when no one really knows his ability yet.
06:52You don't.
06:54Leroy, you don't.
06:55We don't know how good he's going to be in the league.
06:56Okay, but you don't.
06:59You really don't.
07:01But the things that make you good in this league,
07:05what does he do?
07:11Go.
07:11There's 32 teams,
07:14and they're looking at Shadour Sanders and saying,
07:18from the transition from college to the NFL,
07:24what skill set transfers over?
07:28I'll wait.
07:30I'll wait.
07:30Go.
07:30Give me one.
07:33Give me one.
07:34If his last name was Manny,
07:36you think things would have been different?
07:38Yeah, no.
07:39No.
07:40Yeah, it would have.
07:42Okay.
07:44All right.
07:44I'm just.
07:45They would have said he had intentions.
07:47Well, because here's the thing.
07:48Here's the thing.
07:48There would have been things.
07:50Gamer.
07:50Well, the one thing I'll say about him.
07:52A gamer.
07:52It would have been totally different.
07:54But here,
07:55the one thing I'll say about him,
07:56Manny,
07:57is ain't none of them small.
07:59All of them have the prototypical look.
08:01Yeah, but I would say the small thing,
08:05like that's going further away by the wayside.
08:08Like there are.
08:09It is.
08:09Okay.
08:10I'll give you a perfect example.
08:12I'll give you a perfect example.
08:13You guys can't gain weight when they get into the NFL.
08:15No.
08:15Yes.
08:16He can.
08:16He's a big quarterback coming into the league.
08:18Let me give you a perfect example.
08:22Dylan Gabriel is tiny.
08:24Mm-hmm.
08:24When they drafted him,
08:26what did they talk about?
08:29His ability to elude and make plays down the field.
08:35We may have questions about him making on-time throws.
08:41We may have questions about his size.
08:43But when they show tape,
08:45they show him running.
08:46They show him moving around.
08:48They show him making plays.
08:49Okay.
08:50That might not be a first or second rounder.
08:52But some people might find that skill set worthy of a third round pick.
08:58All I'm asking you is this.
08:59Regardless of what the name is.
09:03Regardless of what the name is.
09:05Tell me.
09:06Give me one set of skills that he possessed that you could say that'll work in the NFL.
09:13I would say like he has a lot of the timing stuff that Tua does have.
09:17No, he doesn't.
09:19Dude, come on.
09:19Like this guy.
09:20He doesn't.
09:21Dude, he's not.
09:21Dude, listen, this is real talk.
09:26Okay.
09:27He is high school compared to Tua's timing when it comes to throwing a football.
09:31Tua has a superpower of timing.
09:34Like you're not going to find that below the second round, Leroy.
09:39Right.
09:40But, right.
09:41So my point is, that's why these guys are going later.
09:44No, no, no, no.
09:44But to say somebody, you're going to find somebody similar to Tua in the fifth round.
09:48It's not fair to compare.
09:49Is not, is not real.
09:51I'm talking about, but when you're talking about who you're going to find.
09:53They didn't draft Quentin Ewers.
09:56Okay.
09:57They drafted Quentin Ewers to try to develop him.
10:00Is he Quentin Ewers?
10:01Is it Quentin?
10:02No, it's Quentin.
10:03All right, Quentin.
10:04I'm black.
10:05We don't have Quins.
10:06We have Quins.
10:11Sorry.
10:13Sorry.
10:13I'm just saying.
10:14Quentin.
10:15So, I'm not, they drafted him to try to develop him.
10:21He is a project.
10:22Okay.
10:23In hopes that he could get there.
10:25But best guess this year, who's going to get a chance to start first?
10:28Quinn Ewers or Shador Sanders?
10:30Because I'm going to say Shador Sanders.
10:32Why?
10:33Because.
10:34What other options do they have?
10:36I'll put something on that.
10:38You think that Shador Sanders is not going to start at all this year?
10:40No.
10:41Doubt it, dude.
10:42Like, they've already.
10:43Wait.
10:43But you still, listen.
10:46You still have not answered.
10:48Because it's pretty clear, Leroy.
10:50I understand what you're saying.
10:52But the idea that Dylan Gabriel, who had the number one team in the country around him,
10:57and Shador Sanders, who, yeah, had a very good player in Travis Hunter,
11:00but probably one of the worst O-lines in the country where he was getting nasty left and right.
11:03We pointed that out.
11:05He helped lead a team.
11:06And Luis Benito did say this.
11:08Like, Colorado only won one game before Shador and Deion went there.
11:13Yeah.
11:13And they were in the midst of the college football playoffs this season.
11:18There's nobody on God's green earth that thought that Dylan Gabriel was going to get picked before Shador Sanders.
11:24Me included.
11:25Nobody.
11:25I'm going to say me included.
11:27Okay.
11:28The swag might be something, but he's a culture changer.
11:30Dude, like, the idea that Dylan Gabriel even went in the third round is a little jonking.
11:35And they took him before Shador Sanders and also kind of feels like they were strong-armed because the owner likes to do that.
11:42He does.
11:43It's just like, look at that draft room and look how they reacted to him getting picked.
11:47Right.
11:48Not look like it.
11:49And look, I know there was stuff said around his whole draft persona,
11:54and I'm sure the Dolphins weren't very involved in it because they do have Tua.
11:56I'm not even talking about that.
11:59I don't care.
11:59Listen, to be honest with you, the only thing that I am looking at when I'm looking at this situation,
12:09I don't care about the attitude.
12:11I don't care about any of that.
12:13Hell, Brian Leaf went second.
12:15Don't tell me about attitude.
12:17Okay?
12:17Don't tell me about you overlooked all that attitude because dude was big as hell,
12:23had a cannon for an arm, and whatever.
12:26That's fine.
12:27I don't care about that stuff.
12:29I don't care about the one.
12:31All I am talking about is the skill set that he has and how it transfers to the NFL.
12:39That is it.
12:41You wouldn't say he's got a lot of the stuff that Brock Purdy does?
12:44Brock Purdy is a gamer.
12:46What is the thing that stands out about Brock Purdy?
12:49He's pretty accurate.
12:51You should just understand that it's 70%, dude.
12:52It's not like he's-
12:53Yeah, but that's-
12:54All right.
12:57Oh, don't say that because a lot of people thought Tua was accurate because he throws
13:00short passes to Tyree Kill and all these guys.
13:03So don't say that.
13:05Don't give me that exact thing.
13:06You're telling me, okay, him and Tua are saying he's-
13:11No, I'm not saying-
13:11Nobody's saying he's saying he's-
13:12You said similar.
13:14You're looking for something similar in the later rounds.
13:17And if you're the Dolphins and you're looking for somebody, like, nobody's coming into this
13:22draft process and saying Quinn Ewers is a better quarterback prospect than Jador Sanders.
13:26Nobody is.
13:27Other than maybe Des Bryant.
13:28Ha, ha, ha, ha.
