00:00SITTING TO MY LEFT, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, ADRIAN ZMED!
00:04ADRIAN ZMED? I THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD!
00:08OH, MY GOD!
00:10WE'RE NOT KIDDING!
00:12WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT YOU FOREVER, RIGHT, PRESTON?
00:15WE HAVE. WE ABSOLUTELY HAVE. WE ARE FANS.
00:17HAS ANYBODY EVER SAID TO YOU, I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD BEFORE, THOUGH?
00:21THAT'S A SLIGHT INSULT.
00:24WELL, ACTUALLY, THERE WAS AN EPISODE OF THE SIMPSONS
00:27WHERE I WAS IN ONE OF THEIR MUSICAL NUMBERS,
00:31AND I POPPED OUT OF A COFFIN SAYING, AND I'M NOT DEAD!
00:35HERE YOU ARE IN THIS PLAY, AND AGAIN, MIDDLE TOWN,
00:39AND IT'S TWO COUPLES, AND THERE'S SOME COMEDY,
00:44THERE'S SOME SADNESS, BUT IT'S THE WAY THEY'VE GROWN OVER THE YEARS.
00:48WHAT DREW YOU TO THIS?
00:49EXACTLY THAT.
00:51I'M USED TO, YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN THROUGH THE EASTERN SEABOARD
00:54SO MANY TIMES WITH MUSICALS.
00:56YEAH.
00:57AND I'M USED TO JUST BEING DRENCHED IN SWEAT BY THE END OF THE SHOW
01:01AND DOING IT.
01:02AND THEN I READ THIS PLAY, AND IT WAS SUCH A SIMPLE PLAY.
01:08IT'S JUST ABOUT TWO COUPLES WHO HAVE DINNER EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT
01:12FOR 33 YEARS.
01:13RIGHT.
01:14THEY'RE BEST FRIENDS, AND THEY'RE NORMAL PEOPLE,
01:17AND LIFE HAPPENS TO THEM.
01:19AND IT TRULY IS A ROLLER COASTER OF EMOTIONS.
01:21I MEAN, WE SUCK YOU IN BY ALL OUR LITTLE CHARMING QUIRKS
01:26THAT THE COUPLES HAVE AND EVERYTHING, AND THEN LIFE HAPPENS.
01:30THERE ARE TRAGEDIES IN LIFE THAT YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH,
01:32RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS WITH YOUR SPOUSE AND EVERYTHING.
01:37AND WHAT IS THE GREAT FASCINATING THING ABOUT THIS PLAY
01:40IS THAT THE WORDS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.
01:43I'M ACTUALLY FIRST-GENERATION ROMANIAN,
01:45SO MY FAMILY CAME TO AMERICA FOR THEIR KIDS TO BE DOCTORS AND LAWYERS,
01:51AND I COME UP TO MY DAD AND SAY I'M GOING TO BE AN ACTOR.
01:54RIGHT.
01:57THE FUNNY THING ABOUT HIM IS I WON HIM OVER.
02:00I LITERALLY OUT OF ACTING SCHOOL,
02:02I GOT ONE OF THE LAST NATIONAL TOURS OF THE ORIGINAL GREECE,
02:06AND WE WERE PLAYING IN MY HOMETOWN OF CHICAGO.
02:11YOU WERE PLAYING ZUKO?
02:12YEAH, I WAS PLAYING DANNY,
02:13AND WE WERE GOING INTO A VERY BIG THEATER INTO CHICAGO,
02:17AND NOBODY REALLY KNEW VERY MUCH ABOUT GREECE AT THAT TIME.
02:20THE MOVIE HAD NOT COME OUT YET.
02:23IT WAS JUST A HIT ON BROADWAY,
02:25AND THERE WERE A FEW NATIONAL TOURS.
02:27SO THE COMPANY MANAGER SAID,
02:29LOOK, WE'RE HAVING A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH THIS OPENING NIGHT.
02:31WE'RE GOING TO PAPER THE HOUSE.
02:32TELL YOUR DAD THAT YOU CAN INVITE THE ENTIRE CONGREGATION.
02:35THE ENTIRE CONGREGATION.
02:37OH, MAN, THAT'S A GREECE.
02:39I DIDN'T MENTION THAT MY FATHER IS A PRIEST.
02:41AN ORTHODOX PRIEST.
02:43THEY CAN GET MARRIED.
02:44AN ORTHODOX PRIEST CAN GET MARRIED.
02:46A PRIEST IS VERY PROFANE.
02:48OH, GOD, YEAH.
02:50ARE YOU KIDDING?
02:51I'M GIVING THE FINGER ON THE SHOW.
02:53THE ORIGINAL GREECE WAS NOT MEANT FOR KIDS.
02:55IT WAS MEANT FOR ADULTS,
02:57LOOKING BACK ON THEIR LIVES IN HIGH SCHOOL.
02:59SO HE BRINGS DOWN THE CONVERSATION.
03:01SO THERE WERE LIKE, YOU KNOW,
03:03500, YOU KNOW,
03:05ROMANIAN PEOPLE SCREAMING AND YELLING,
03:07AND THEY HAD THEIR GYPSY VIOLENTS,
03:09AND THEY WERE GOING,
03:11SINGING THE ACCOLATE.
03:13THE TIME I CAME OUT, THERE WAS A BIG CHEER.
03:15IT WAS THEN THAT MY FATHER WAS WON OVER.
03:18OKAY.
03:19ALTHOUGH HE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND,
03:21WHEN I ENDED UP GETTING TELEVISION AND FILM,
03:24WHEN I WAS DOING TJ HOOKER,
03:26HE DIDN'T REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT WAS ALL ABOUT.
03:31SO HE SAYS,
03:32YOU WORK FOR ONE HOUR.
03:34WHAT YOU DO REST OF WEEK?
03:39THAT'S GREAT.
03:40YOU ARE BUM.
03:41I GOT INTO THIS BUSINESS BECAUSE I WANTED TO BE AN ACTOR.
03:44RIGHT.
03:45THAT'S IT.
03:46I NEVER EVEN WANTED TO DO TELEVISION AND FILM.
03:47OKAY.
03:48I JUST WANTED TO WORK IN THEATER.
03:49RIGHT.
03:50THAT'S ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO.
03:51AND THEN ONE THING HAPPENS,
03:52AND THEN YOU'RE JUST WISKED AWAY,
03:53AND SUDDENLY YOU'RE IN HOLLYWOOD,
03:54AND YOU'RE DOING ALL THIS STUFF.
03:56YOU'RE GOOD FRIENDS WITH BILL SHATTER,
03:57WILLIAM SHATTER, RIGHT?
03:58YEAH.
03:59I'M ACTUALLY,
04:00WE'RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON A FEW PROJECTS
04:02WITH HIS PRODUCTION COMPANY,
04:03ACTUALLY.
04:04I'M LETTING IT OUT RIGHT NOW.
04:05WE'RE ACTUALLY THINKING OF BRINGING HOOKER BACK.
04:07OH, THAT'D BE.
04:08IN A COMICAL WAY.
04:09THAT'D BE.
04:10AWESOME.
04:11BECAUSE BILL IS 88.
04:12YEAH.
04:13BUT THE FUNNY THING ABOUT IT IS,
04:14IS THAT WHEN WE DID HOOKER,
04:17BILL PRETTY MUCH DID PUSH THE ENVELOPE
04:19ON ASKING FOR RIDICULOUS THINGS
04:21FOR HOOKER TO DO.
04:23I MEAN, WE HAD LIKE TECHNICAL ADVISORS
04:25FROM LAPD THERE,
04:26AND HE SAID,
04:27LOOK, NO, NO, NO.
04:28I GOT THIS IDEA.
04:29I GOT THIS IDEA.
04:30HOW ABOUT I JUST RUN OVER TO THE HELICOPTER
04:32AND AS IT'S GOING UP,
04:33I JUST GRAB ONTO THE RUNG OF THE HELICOPTER
04:35AND AS WE'RE UP IN THE AIR,
04:36I TAKE MY GUN OUT
04:37AND I GO,
04:38BRING IT DOWN.
04:41AND THE TA STANDING THERE GOING,
04:44NOBODY WOULD EVER DO THAT.
04:47THE TOP TEXT HERE SAYS,
04:48POOR MAN'S TRAVOLTA, MY ASS,
04:50HE MADE BACHELOR PARTY,

05:55OUR CAREERS ARE REALLY OVER.
05:58WHAT ARE WE DOING?
05:59THIS IS GOING TO BE TERRIBLE.
06:02ALL WE DID WAS SHOW UP
06:03FOR 13 HOURS A DAY
06:05AND GOOF OFF.
06:06YEAH.
06:07ALMOST NOTHING
06:08OF WHAT THE SCRIPT
06:09ORIGINALLY WAS WAS IN THERE.
06:10WE JUST AD-LIBBED.
06:11WE JUST GOOFED OFF.
06:13AND HONESTLY,
06:14SOME OF THE FUNNIEST SCENES
06:16IN THE MOVIE
06:17NEVER MADE IT INTO THE MOVIE
06:19BECAUSE WE HAD GOTTEN AN X-RATING.
06:21THERE'S A HORSE SCENE.
06:22THERE'S A HORSE.
06:23A DONKE SHOW.
06:24OH, LET ME TALK ABOUT THIS.
06:25YEAH.
06:26THE DONKE,
06:27THE DONKE ACTUALLY DIED.
06:29WHAT?
06:30THEY BROUGHT HIM BACK TO LIFE.
06:32NO.
06:33THEY LITERALLY,
06:34THEY LITERALLY SHOT HIM
06:36WITH SOME SHOT OF SOMETHING
06:39AND THEN HE KEELED OVER
06:42AND HIS HEART STOPPED.
06:43OH, MY GOD.
06:44AND WE'VE GOT ALL THESE PEOPLE,
06:45THESE PEOPLE, YOU KNOW,
06:46THERE'S LIKE A HUNDRED EXTRAS.
06:48MANY OF THE, YOU KNOW,
06:49THE GIRLS ARE HALF-NAKED
06:50AND EVERYTHING.
06:51WE'RE ALL STANDING THERE
06:52GOING, OH, MY GOD.
06:53THEY KILLED THE DONKE.
06:54THE DONKE.
06:55OH.
06:56YEAH.
06:57DEAR LORD.
06:58YOU RESURRECTED A DONKE,
06:59ADRIAN SAMAND?
07:00AND THEY DID THE WHOLE ADRENALINE
07:01THING, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?
07:02YEAH.
07:03THEY PUT THE THING IN HIS HEART
07:04AND HE CAME BACK.
07:05THE DONKEY SNORTS THREE LINES
07:07OF COPE.
07:09YEAH.
07:10YOU DEFINITELY COULD.
07:11IT'S A REAL GOOD KIDS MOVIE.
07:13I'M REALLY PROUD.
07:15YOU'RE THINKING YOUR CAREER IS OVER,
07:17BUT NO, NO, NO.
07:20AND THEN, HONESTLY,
07:21WHEN WE SAW THE FIRST CUT,
07:22IT WAS LIKE,
07:23TOM AND I LOOKED AT EACH OTHER,
07:24THIS IS FUNNY.
07:26YEAH.
07:27WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?
07:28IS THERE ANY CHANCE
07:29YOU COULD GO BACK
07:30AND RE-RELEASE THE DIRECTOR'S CUT
07:32BY ANY CHANCE?
07:33OR IS IT TOO LATE?
07:34BACK THEN,
07:35THEY DIDN'T SAVE THAT KIND OF FOOTAGE.
07:37YEAH.
07:38NOW THEY DO ALL THE TIME
07:39BECAUSE OF EVERYTHING THEY DO.
07:40BUT HONESTLY,
07:41THERE WAS ONE SCENE
07:43THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY HYSTERICAL.
07:45SO WE'RE, WE'RE, WE'RE, WE'RE,
07:47THE BACHELOR,
07:48THE PARTY'S NOT GOING VERY WELL.
07:49THE HOOKERS HAVEN'T SHOWED UP.
07:50WE'RE, WE'RE SITTING IN THE,
07:52IN THE, IN THE HOTEL ROOM
07:53LOOKING AT A, AT A SHIRLEY TEMPLE MOVIE.
07:55RIGHT, RIGHT.
07:56AND IT'S JUST NOT GOING ABOUT IT.
07:57THE HOOKERS GO TO THE WRONG.
07:58RIGHT.
07:59YEAH, YEAH, YEAH.
08:00SO THEN I SAY, YOU KNOW,
08:01RICK, LET'S,
08:02LET'S GO DOWNSTAIRS
08:03AND GET SOMETHING TO EAT.
08:04I'M HUNGRY.
08:05WE, WE GET INTO THE, UH,
08:07I'M NOT GOING TO DO THIS,
08:08SAVE THIS ON RADIO.
08:09THIS WAS CUT.
08:10HE, I SAID, YOU KNOW,
08:13SIT IN THIS BOOTH.
08:14THIS IS THE BEST BOOTH IN THE PLACE.
08:15SO HE SITS IN THERE,
08:16AND, UH, ALL OF A SUDDEN
08:18YOU HEAR HIS ZIPPER SOUND.
08:20HIS EYES LIGHT UP.
08:21RIGHT.
08:22THERE'S A GIRL UNDERNEATH
08:23WHO IS TAKING CARE OF IT.
08:25GOING TO GIVE HIM A HAPPY ENDING.
08:26YES.
08:27OF SOME SORT.
08:28SO I, YOU KNOW, SAYING,
08:29MY GIFT TO YOU.
08:30YEAH.
08:31AND WE SEE THE, THE MINISTER
08:33WHO'S GOING TO MARRY HIM
08:35WALK INTO THE RESTAURANT
08:36AND GO, OH, FATHER,
08:37OVER HERE, COME ON,
08:38OVER HERE.
08:39SO HE COMES TO THE EDGE
08:41AND HE STARTS HAVING A
08:42CONVERSATION WITH, WITH US
08:43AND TOM'S GOING, OH, JESUS.
08:45OH, MOTHER OF GOD.
08:46OH, MOTHER MARY AND JOSEPH.
08:49OH, HE'S WRITING AND EVERYTHING
08:51AND, AND I SAY,
08:53HE ALWAYS SAY GRACE
08:55BEFORE HE EATS.
09:00OH, THAT'S GREAT.
09:02HE CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.
09:03HE GETS UP AND RUNS ON.
09:04I SAID, FATHER, SIT HERE.
09:05IT'S THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE.
09:06YOU CLOSE UP ON HIS FACE,
09:08YOU HEAR THE ZIPPER SOUND
09:09AND HIS EYES GO.
09:10OH, THAT'S GREAT.
09:11DIDN'T MAKE IT IN THE MOVIE.
09:13WE HAD OFFENDED EVERYBODY ELSE.
09:14THEY DIDN'T WANT TO
09:15OFFEND THE CATHOLICS.
09:16OH, IT'S SO FRICKIN' FUNNY.
09:18YOU AND TOM WERE FRIENDS.
09:19COULD YOU TELL THEN
09:21WHAT A TALENT HE WAS
09:22AND WHAT HE WAS GOING TO GO ON
09:23TO BE?
09:24He's honestly one of the nicest guys
09:25in the business.
09:26Everything that's ever happened to him,
09:27he deserves every bit of it.
09:28He's a great, great guy.
09:29That's great.
09:30He's very talented.
09:31Wow.
09:32I wanted to ask you...
09:33You know, a lot of people
09:34will know this, but Tom was not
09:35originally cast in that role
09:36and neither was Tawny Katane.
09:38Tawny Katane was the IT girl
09:40at the time and she was
09:41the Whitesnake video.
09:42It predates the Whitesnake video.
09:44Who was?
09:45Well, we shot one month
09:47with the other cast.
09:48Who was it?
09:49No way.
09:50It was Paul Reiser.
09:51Really?
09:52And Kelly McGinnis.
09:53Oh my goodness.
09:54No kidding.
09:55Did they get fired?
09:56Well, the producers just felt
09:58there wasn't a chemistry going on
10:00and everything.
10:01And Tom, they had just seen
10:04a screening of Splash.
10:07Oh.
10:08Oh.
10:09And they said, we really need
10:11to get that guy.
10:12That's like...
10:13I couldn't even imagine.
10:14And Paul Reiser's talented, man,
10:15but he's great.
10:16He just doesn't have the kinetic.
10:17He was very funny.
10:18Was he?
10:19He was very funny.
10:20He just wasn't the chemistry
10:21that was going on.
10:22That's happened before.
10:23Back to the Future.
10:24Eric Stoltz was...
10:25They filmed for quite a while
10:26with him in the lead role.
10:27Yeah.
10:28The scene where he falls
10:29and hits his head,
10:30that's Eric Stoltz's head.
10:31When he falls out of the tree,
10:32bonks his head on the...
10:33I didn't know that.
10:34Yeah, that's Eric Stoltz.
10:35Wow.
10:36Okay.
10:37If you've never seen Bachelor Party,
10:39it's worth going back for a visit.
10:42A number of people also texting
10:43and asking if we're going
10:44to bowl tonight, Adrian.
10:46You know, it's funny.
10:47I've had the great fortune
10:49and lucky to have two cult classic movies
10:52that are really...
10:54They're targeting completely different people.
10:56Yeah.
10:57And it's just really kind of cool
10:59after all these years.
11:00You know, in theater,
11:02which is really my first love
11:03and that's why I still do theater.
11:05Right.
11:06If I'm not going to be doing television and film,
11:08I'd rather be behind the camera these days.
11:10But if I'm going to act,
11:11I'd rather be on a stage.
11:12I could see that.
11:13Because that is the actor's medium.
11:14It's electric.
11:15It's like a drug.
11:16Yeah.
11:17And Grease 2,
11:19it was an opportunity to put almost...
11:22It was my Danny Zuko that I put on film.
11:24Right.
11:25Because they had to create a...
11:26Yeah.
11:27They created another character,
11:28which is basically Danny Zuko.
11:29Yeah.
11:30And it was a weird thing
11:31because you had Grease comes out.
11:33You have Travolta's on a meteoric rise.
11:36You have Olivia Newton-John.
11:37You have all these big stars in it.
11:39And then they go with Grease 2
11:40and they cast...
11:41Not unknowns, but...
11:43But they actually did something really kind of...
11:48They took a big chance...
11:50Yes.
11:51...in what they did.
11:52They did not...
11:53It was very unique what they did.
11:55They also created...
11:56They created a musical that was never a proven hit on Broadway.
11:58Right.
11:59So none of these songs had ever been heard.
12:01It didn't have a track record or anything.
12:04And a lot of people...
12:05You know, Grease 1 obviously was a massive, huge success.
12:11But Grease 2 didn't actually do badly.
12:14In its theatrical release,
12:17it made about $80 to $100 million at that time.
12:20I watched it.
12:21And people think that it wasn't as big a hit.
12:23But today, it out-rents and out-sells Grease 1.
12:27Really?
12:28It's more kid-friendly.
12:29Oh, true.
12:30And it's actually more of the essence of what Grease,
12:33the original Broadway show, was about.
12:35It was about all the T-Birds.
12:37It was about all the pink ladies.
12:39Whereas the movie of Grease became a vehicle for John and Olivia.
12:44In the play, Knicky sings Grease Lightning.
12:47Not Danny.
12:48That's true.
12:49It's his car!
12:50Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:51Everybody has had a song in the Broadway show to tell you their story.
12:56So it's more of an ensemble piece.
12:58And Grease 2 was directed by Pat Birch,
13:01who was the choreographer of the Broadway show.
13:03So she wanted me to do that role badly,
13:07because they wanted to put a rock star in that role,
13:10because there weren't any known faces.
13:12Michelle had just done, I think, Hollywood Nights.
13:15This is Michelle Pfeiffer.
13:16With Tony Danza.
13:17Right, right.
13:18At that point, it wasn't a big hit or anything like that.
13:20I remember, yeah.
13:21And Maxwell Caulfield was not...
13:23He was an English actor, but hadn't done much.
13:26And they really wanted a rock star in that role.
13:29But Pat wanted me to do it.
13:31So she strategically brought me in after...
13:35They would see, like, Casey and the Sunshine Boys,
13:38or one of the Gibb brothers, or whatever.
13:40And then I went in and said, all right, it's still his.
13:43All right, it's still his.
13:44Until after 12 callbacks, they finally said...
13:46Wow.
13:47It's his role.
13:48Well, honestly, I watch it every time it's on.
13:51It has a good energy to it.
13:52You're, again, sort of a self-deprecating, funny guy.
13:55The whole bowling sequence is pretty...
13:57You know, it's...
13:59You can't help but get swept up in it.
14:01And it has its own energy.
14:03And to this point, you had a lot of talented people involved with it.
14:05Yeah, yeah.
14:06A lot of people came out of that thing.
14:08Even the Seagal twins went on.
14:10The girls were the cheerleaders went on to have their own series.
14:13You have a lot of fans in Philadelphia.
14:15And to prove that, I'm going to show something to you.
14:16I don't know if anybody has made you aware of this or not.
14:19But I think Steve made an offhand comment one day
14:22about somebody getting an Adrian Zamed tattoo.
14:25So we do this feature every Tuesday called Tattoosay.
14:29People come in and actually get a tattoo from our show.
14:32It's called The Press and Steve.
14:33They'll get a tattoo with us in it.
14:35And we've been doing it for years and years and years.
14:37We had a guy who called in and volunteered
14:40to get an Adrian Zamed tattoo.
14:42Oh, my God. I'm looking at it right now.
14:43This is a guy...
14:45That's your face on his right peck.
14:49It's huge.
14:51This was just...
14:52This was within the last year, right?
14:53Within the last year, yeah.
14:54Yeah, that we had this done.
14:55And the guy eagerly came in...
14:58Please tell me that that's not permanent.
15:00That's permanent.
15:01That's a real tattoo on this man's chest.
15:04So when he's 90 years old and I look 90 on his chest, yes.
15:08What was I thinking?
15:10So we took a picture of you from Grease 2,
15:13and that is now permanently on this guy's chest, Adrian.
15:17This reminds me of something that Sally Struthers said about tattoos back when we were doing Grease.
15:24She said, oh, yeah, yeah.
15:26Back in the 60s, you know, I was a flower child.
15:28I got a tattoo of a butterfly on my butt.
15:30Now it's going into its cocoon.
15:32We are so delighted that you had a chance to come by here.
15:38We are big fans.
15:39Nice to come in.
15:40We knew you'd be great.
15:41Yeah, we knew you'd be cool.
15:43That's great, man.
15:44Excellent.
15:45My pleasure.
15:46And you know what?
15:47We should do a promotion where we go bowling with Adrian.
15:48How cool would that be?
15:50Ladies and gentlemen, some love for Adrian Smith.
15:54Thank you so much.
