00:03Debut album, CMT award winner, were nominated for an ACM.
00:09What would the girl who was going to college to be an accountant be thinking right now?
00:15She's freaking out.
00:17I think it's safe to say.
00:19Yeah, none of it.
00:21It's all very surreal and it's hard to process and believe that it's actually happening.
00:25But yeah, I'm not sure what she would say.
00:30She would probably be too stunned to speak.
00:34I love that.
00:35That's awesome.
00:37Well, you co-wrote all of these songs on your album, Lucky.
00:41Do they all stem from personal experience?
00:44They do.
00:45Yeah.
00:46I was just saying earlier today, I'm not sure if I would know how to write a song about something
00:53that didn't happen to me or that I didn't know much about.
00:55I get all my ideas from personal experiences, so I try to make that known in the lyrics and
01:04stuff, too.
01:05I hope that my fans and listeners can feel that I've been through what I'm talking about.
01:11I'm sure they can.
01:12And I know personally, when I listen to some of your songs, they resonate with me.
01:17What goes through your head and what do you feel when somebody comes up to you and says
01:21something like that?
01:22They say, like, oh, I'm not pretty.
01:24That happened to me.
01:25Or, yeah, I'm wearing Tennessee orange for him.
01:29It's really cool because, you know, I sit down and write these songs because they happen
01:34to me.
01:34And then to have people also say that it's resonating with them, when, like, obviously
01:41making music and putting out music, that's one of the goals.
01:44But, like, when I sit down and write, I'm not like, I'm going to write something that
01:47people come up to me and say that, you know what I mean?
01:49Yeah.
01:49So to be able to just write about my personal experiences and, you know, have it.
01:55Some of my songs have been helping people like Girl in the Mirror, you know, and so
01:59to have songs that, like, say something and mean something is just really rewarding as
02:03a songwriter and makes me want to keep doing it.
02:06So do you have a favorite song on your album?
02:09Oh, they're all my favorite.
02:11I feel like it's like having children.
02:14You can't pick a favorite.
02:15But if I had to, I'd probably go with I'm Not Pretty or for the sad songs, I would go
02:23with Why Johnny.
02:25Oh, I like that song.
02:26Why Johnny?
02:27Very good.
02:28Speaking of I'm Not Pretty, obviously, we're all a little guilty of doing a bit of creeping
02:34on people, but does the person who did that to you know that this song is about them and
02:41have they reached out to you?
02:44I'm sure they know, but no, I haven't heard anything.
02:48I'm not I'm sure I think if someone wrote a song about me like that, I don't think I
02:53would reach out.
02:56Yeah.
02:56What would you even say to that?
02:58Yeah, I mean, it was supposed to be to like, I probably could have, you know, said something
03:03personally to the person about it.
03:06But it's kind of just like, why not just write a song about it that makes people kind
03:09of laugh and whatever.
03:11Everybody knows that kind of experience and situation.
03:15So if you have the talent like you do, and you can turn it into a song, why not?
03:21Exactly.
03:22I'd rather sing about it than talk to somebody about it.
03:25Yeah, make it awkward for them, not you.
03:28The title track on the album, Lucky, I also think people can really allot to that song
03:35too.
03:36Where did the idea for that song come from?
03:39And what made you want to name your album after that song?
03:43So I had the you're lucky I'm drinking, like title idea kind of because there's been several
03:50instances where my girlfriends and I will be out drinking and having a good time.
03:55And the tequila starts to taste like maybe he didn't treat me that bad.
03:59Maybe it wasn't so horrible.
04:03And so that kind of is a just kind of like a party song that's supposed to be fun.
04:07And, you know, my the track guy, Messi, that built out the track for it the day that we
04:13wrote it.
04:14I wanted it to be this like honky tonk, you know, two step in line dance song type thing.
04:21So when we built that out, and then it was just like, I was so excited about the song
04:26because it was not like any other song I'd ever written that I was like, I think this
04:30might be the title track.
04:31Like I said that the day that we wrote it.
04:33Um, and I was just really excited about it because it makes you want to like line dance
04:38in a casino.
04:39And, you know, I went back and forth with like, oh, should my debut album be like self-titled
04:45or what?
04:46And I was like, I would honestly have more fun, I think, building out this like lucky
04:50world than I would just self-titling it.
04:53So that's kind of how that happened.
04:55I love that.
04:56And I love that your album art and your outfit and your vibe is all surrounding it.
05:02I think it's all very, very lucky vibes.
05:04I like it.
05:06What was the first song you ever written?
05:09And do you ever think about?
05:11Yeah, the first song that I ever wrote was a song called stay in memory.
05:14And I wrote that when I was 19 to be able to open for chase rise at the Georgia theater
05:19in Athens, because he allowed me to open first of three, but he knew that I only sang covers.
05:24So he was like, you need to play an original song.
05:27So I had a month to write that and it was called stay in memory.
05:29And I thought, you know, I had another song called somewhere missing me that I used to
05:34play in college.
05:36And I was actually listening to like a work tape of it the other day and I really like
05:39it.
05:40So I think maybe at some point I'll, you know, release all these older songs that I had and
05:46I wrote completely by myself.
05:48Maybe it'll just be like on YouTube or something, but maybe they'll see the light of day.
05:52Maybe not.
05:53I'm sure someone in Athens has a video of it somewhere.
05:57We will see.

05:59I just want you to talk about your, one of the producers on your album was Christian Bush
06:04and you kind of had a full circle moment with, with him.
06:09Can you talk a little bit about that?
06:12Yeah.
06:13So, um, I was in, I went to the university of Georgia and I was in the music business
06:17program and I had to have an internship.
06:20So, um, I was a publishing intern for Brandon Bush, his brother and Christian Bush.
06:26Um, and we kind of met through that.
06:28And I was, I remember like freaking out because I just loved sugar land growing up.
06:33Like stay is one of my all time favorite songs.
06:35Um, and Oh, fun fact.
06:38So the guitar that, um, is played on God plays the Gibson is the same one from stay.
06:43So I thought that's cool, but, um, yeah, that's sidetracked.
06:47But anyways, um, yeah, so I was just an intern and then I moved to Nashville and he reached
06:53out to just check in on me because that's the kind of guy he is.
06:56And I asked him to make some demos for me.
06:59And so he's produced everything that I've ever done.
07:02And, and yeah, it's just, it's really cool to, um, have him as a producer, but also a
07:08mentor.
07:08Cause he's gone through what I'm going through now, like what, with what he did with sugar
07:12land.
07:13So, um, it's, it's really awesome.
07:16And I don't know how I got here, but here we are.
07:20That's awesome.
07:20And I feel like people in Nashville, like they really do help each other out.
07:24It's a tight community.
07:27Yeah.
07:27I feel like everyone here kind of looks out for each other and, um, yeah.
07:32If he didn't offer to help me out with some demos, I probably wouldn't be here.
