00:00I've been WCSX Big Jim's house 842 ladies and gentlemen Bill Ingvall it's radio bill we have
00:06to clap when you come on it's required by radio law well yeah you know a lot of stations have
00:12kind of gone away from that but I'm glad to see you guys hanging on well we figured you almost
00:15destroyed riff years ago when you filled in for Calvert so we want to make sure this is your one
00:19shot the funny story about this so Kenny's a buddy of mine and so we uh he said hey do you
00:27want to come guest DJ and I said yeah I'm thinking it's me and me and Ken gonna be there every day
00:33no Ken was Ken was going on vacation and just left me as the morning DJ and I'll never forget they
00:42had to keep telling me you gotta say the time and temperature I'm like couldn't they just look at
00:46their watch and look outside and he goes no you gotta say it you gotta say the time and temperature
00:51every 15 minutes and so we were giving away 10 this happened to be that week they were giving
00:57away 10 000 and the girl that won it was just so non-plussed by it that's our favorite thing in
01:05radio isn't it yeah it's like yeah I won 10 grand thanks you just won 10 grand what are you gonna do
01:11she goes I don't know I guess I'll pay some bills or something I'm like okay never mind you lose
01:15all right we're going to second place I can see Calvert's calling you from vacation Bill Casey the
01:21casual one Kenny boy what are you doing you're such a great guy but I'm so looking forward to
01:28getting back I had more fun uh especially during my club days at the uh Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle
01:36still rocking I was gonna mention that Billingvall by the way the Fox Theater tomorrow night 7 30
01:40showtime Billingvall.com for tickets you can also 313 presents Fox Theater and um this is it
01:46your last tour really you're putting a bow on it you know you know what but I've been I've been
01:52doing this for 42 years and I and I'm gonna miss it yeah I'm not gonna lie to you but I'm not gonna
01:57miss the travel uh and I'm getting older and we lost some great ones this year and it really uh
02:03really kind of hit me that you know you don't got to do this your whole life if you don't want
02:07you know it's like uh so uh you know yeah it's gonna but it's you know that my friend was like
02:14oh man it's depressing I go no it's not it's great dude I want I caught the brass ring I've got to do
02:21everything I wanted to do I mean had my own tv show got platinum and gold albums and wrote books
02:27been on other tv shows I mean the only thing left is Billingvall on ice and nobody wants to see that
02:33um I always wonder about this because we were talking earlier like you guys when you did the
02:40blue collar comedy tour and the kings of comedy came out pretty much the same time you know and
02:44it was just an amazing time for comedy but when was the first time someone yelled here's your sign at
02:49you outside of a comedy venue you're walking down the street and somebody yelled here's your sign
02:54yeah that's uh I could take because uh it was so because you know I you know I had seen Foxworthy uh
03:02you know he had gone through the stratosphere with you might be a redneck but I was in a grocery store
03:08one time and uh I was like two or three people back from the checker and she couldn't something was
03:15going on with the cash register and she couldn't get it to work right and her manager walked over
03:19there and literally hit one button and looked at her and said here's your sign and I was like oh my god
03:24it's a thing it's become and but the funniest thing for me was that people got so excited like
03:32that was in Nashville one time and uh this guy comes running up out of the darkness I mean not
03:39to the state but like we were walking down the street and it scared the hell out of me he walks
03:44up he goes hey man I gotta here's your sign for you I go oh okay he goes I was walking my dog
03:51and here's your sign there it's half a bit nailed it he gave you half a bit yeah I said there's no
03:58joke there he goes you'll figure it out that's kind of a tech assist there so yeah Bill Engvall
04:05with us to the Fox Theater tomorrow night tickets on sale 7 30 showtime of course um went with
04:11musicians we talked to a lot of musicians obviously a classic rock station Bill and we walk through the
04:16process of starting up a band and you work your way through high school and bigger gigs for comedians
04:22though what was the process how did you get up on stage how did you have the you know to get up
04:28there and do it the first time do you remember three words too many beers okay that's what I'm
04:33wondering seriously it really it really and I say that not even joking it was I was working as a DJ
04:41in a nightclub and uh Monday nights we were dark so my friend called me and said hey they opened up
04:49this comedy club down the road you want to go watch amateur night and I was like yeah let's go watch
04:53some people stink it up well we got there and it was sold out and my friend gave the the bouncer
05:00the doorman 20 bucks and he moved two people back to the bar and we got their seats and we were watching
05:07you're having liquid liquid encouragement going through us and uh he goes you got to go up there
05:12and I go yeah I ain't going up there and and I had done a shit like a little show for the my frat
05:18brothers in college but it was just you know me telling jokes right just cutting up in the in the
05:23den or something like that exactly okay and so we're sitting there and all of a sudden uh my boss
05:28from the nightclub comes over he goes are you going up and I said no hell no what is wrong with you
05:33people and uh he brought this lady over and she was the owner of the club and he said this guy's
05:40really funny and she goes you know she figures amateur night what can and what could he if he
05:44sucks it's great and I got up there they taught me into going up and I went up and I just did like
05:49five minutes on being a DJ and dealing with girls on quaaludes and you know play with it another time
05:56for the fifth time in an hour and uh and people were laughing and I was like oh this is kind of cool
06:02I finished my set my five minutes went back and uh sat down with my friend and this lady came over
06:09she goes hey you want to be the house emcee and I said what does that mean and she said you know
06:14you'll pick the comics up at the airport you'll emcee the show throughout the week and then you'll
06:18take them back to the airport on Monday morning so I said sure and I got to work I learned from the
06:24best I learned from Shanling and Seinfeld and Leno and uh all these people and I was at that club for
06:30two and a half years and then went out on the road and it's been 42 years later what is it like I
06:36mean when when you're on stage and something that you wrote and people laugh and react to it what is
06:41that sensation like it's amazing I mean it's it's the greatest feeling in the world especially when
06:49you uh when they just explode with it you know like there's and it very it happens on such a minor
06:56skill they'll laugh at stuff but I mean when they just like like I will tell you that the
07:01second album was called Dorkfish that was huge and uh Dorkfish was huge that that's the one I
07:11when I did it the first time the room like exploded and I remember thinking what is going on and I
07:17thought that was what the people would hang their hat on not here's your sign uh but uh you know I
07:23don't know how they but it was amazing and it was just a bit I wrote on an airplane flying back to
07:29LA because I was doing Rosie O'Donnell's a pair of jokers and uh I needed a like a three or four
07:37minute bit and so I found this Dorkfish bit that I wrote on the airplane and but yeah that that
07:44feeling there is just like it's a sense of power but it's a good power like oh my god this is so
07:50awesome now they can conversely be I just you know you think some bit's gonna kill and it just
07:55lays an egg so that's when you that's when you you don't you don't judge yourself as hard on the
08:02good ones on the bad you're like you know what I have no business in this being in this business I
08:06am not funny that's the worst thing for me is when I would do an album and they'd say the record
08:12company would say we need you to listen to it for edits I go no no I can't listen to myself
08:17because I sit there and go what are they laughing hell Mitch Hedberg used to have on his comedy
08:23albums he go yeah that's not going to make the album it would make the album he was literally
08:26saying yeah that's not going to make track three that won't be it yeah so that would be there was
08:32a good that was the guy so far ahead of his you know Mitch for me was kind of what Sam Kennison was
08:38uh this and Bill Hicks just so far ahead of their time yeah I would love I would love to have seen
08:45what Mitch could have done if he could have controlled his demons and and really gone on
08:49because he was already just I'll be just hysterical every year we we do the for Mitch Hedberg we have
08:56a Mitch Hedberg a local restaurant does something for him and we do the bid every year about getting
09:00a receipt I'll stop and get a donut one donut a donut cutter here on Woodward Avenue and ask for
09:06a receipt in honor Mitch Hedberg do it every year so can you confirm Bill Ingvall tomorrow night when
09:11you go on stage the Fox Theater you will be dressed as Gene Simmons and do Detroit Rock City
09:15to open up the bid come on I well I ordered it and then Amazon hadn't gotten it here so I don't
09:21know what to do hey man what you do at home is your business Bill
09:24now you know what it's going to be really fun it's it's been an interesting uh since I've uh
09:32made the decision to retire from the road it's like the show got better it's like I don't know if
09:38it's just I don't have that weight on me anymore uh but it's still we're going to do some new stuff
09:43and throw in some classics uh and just cannot wait to get to the Fox and really perform there that's
09:50the Fox is one of those theaters you don't just do your show you really perform it yeah yeah and
09:55that's what I'm looking forward to hey Bill I know uh you said you keep saying retiring from the road
10:00I've heard a lot of uh Ron White talk about doing the same that he's going to still you know hang out in
10:06Austin have you guys talked about the process that you guys are going to be going through
10:10no and I'm I'm actually surprised he hadn't called me I left him a message a voicemail the other day
10:15but uh yeah I I noticed that that came out after I'd said I was retiring and you know
10:21it's again what else is he going to do you know right like uh at some point you got to start enjoying
10:29what you've worked for and uh so I'm happy for Ron and uh I don't know what Larry and Jeff will do
10:35uh you know those that's that's a that's a toss-up yeah I Larry's pretty much retired he just kind
10:41of plays those up from what I see uh he seems just to be playing the celebrity golf tournament
10:46do you think you guys will come together one more tour one more blue collar I think it I think
10:52it'd be fun I would uh what I'd like to see is do 12 shows one a month and uh you know like we would
11:00donate the money to charity you like half of it to charity well you should come in you should come in
11:05and do a do a weeks when we go on vacation take over the show here yeah there we go let me tell
11:10you guys that really sounds fun and it sounded fun when Kenny asked me to do it right till they went
11:15yeah you need to be here at 4 30 I'm like okay you know you're not uh no I think Calvert got fired
11:20like six months after that Bill I'm just saying it was all that week man thanks a lot Bill
