Hi, I'm Mark Dunford, editor of Sussexworld.co.uk, and yesterday I had the great privilege of
00:06
going on Popmaster live with Ken Bruce.
00:09
This is something I've been wanting to do for years, but sort of always held back, was
00:13
always a little bit scared, didn't want to, but I try and play the game every day when
00:18
I can live, but if not, I listen back on the app, keep a record of my scores, and always
00:23
compare them with my colleague Steve Bone, and with Steve, he's always pushed me to go
00:27
on.
00:28
He went on in 2021 and did well, won the game, won the 3-10, but we agreed that if I ever
00:35
got the maximum points, 39, or if I averaged 25 per round over the space of a week, then
00:42
I would apply to go on, and in January I managed to do that.
00:45
I got an average of more than 25 for the week, so I applied, and a few weeks later, which
00:51
was yesterday, Monday March 24th, I got on and had the absolute honour to speak to Ken
00:56
live on the radio, and I did quite well.
01:00
My opponent, Tom Brighton, he got 21 in the first round, that put a little bit of pressure
01:04
on me because I've always averaged about 21.
01:08
In recent months, with the help of Steve Bone, and just keep doing the game, I've managed
01:13
to get my average up to about 23, 24, and the odd 25, so yeah, I was a little bit scared
01:19
about going on, but to get 30, which I did, I exceeded all my expectations.
01:24
I've never got a maximum, I've got a 36 once or twice, and a few 33s here and there, but
01:30
if I ever get anything over 24 or 27, I'm absolutely delighted, so really pleased, and
01:35
what I want to do, yesterday I wrote a piece on Sussexworld.co.uk about my experience again
01:42
on Popmaster, and I published the questions that I got.
01:45
So today, what I'm going to do is reveal the answers to those questions, and see how you
01:49
got on.
01:50
Read the questions, I'll leave a little bit of space, maybe 5, 10 seconds, and then reveal
01:56
the answer.
01:57
So remember, there's a bonus round, a bonus subject, sorry, which is free questions, questions
02:02
3, 6, and 9, they're normally a musical clip on the radio, but I'm only going to play the
02:08
one musical clip, because there's only one that really needs the musical clip.
02:13
So you get 3 points for a normal question, 6 points for a bonus, a maximum of 39 points,
02:18
so let's see how you get on.
02:20
So the first question, the song Holiday was the 1984 top 40 debut hit for which superstar?
02:32
I'd like to think most people got that, but you know what you know, and we always know
02:36
that, so it was Madonna, of course.
02:39
So the second question, what Phil Collins song has been number 1 in 2000 for Mariah
02:45
Carey and Westlife, and in 2005 for Steve Brookstein?
02:54
The answer is of course, Against All Odds, I got those two right, so I had 6 out of 6
02:59
so far.
03:00
The first bonus question, it had a musical clip, but it's irrelevant to the actual answer,
03:07
so the question was, you're going to hear the first number 1 single by the band The
03:12
Police, remember the subject was Cops and Robbers.
03:16
The band consisted of Sting, Andy Summers, and which other member?
03:25
And the answer to that was Stuart Copeland, which luckily I knew.
03:29
So there I had 12 out of 12 after 3 questions, so I was on a high and confidence was building.
03:35
So question 4, was the song on my radio in the late 70s was a hit for which group?
03:42
Now this was the first question I got wrong, so I said the real thing, I didn't have a
03:50
clue, never heard of the song, I'd probably know it if I listened to it, but I didn't
03:54
know the answer, but the answer was The Selector, so that was a new band, I don't think I'd
04:00
even heard of The Selector before, so there was a blot on my copy book for the first one
04:06
I got wrong.
04:07
So question 5, and I got this one wrong, and I got this one dramatically wrong, because
04:12
I sounded quite confident on the radio when I listened back, it was in which year were
04:17
these songs all top 10 hits?
04:20
And it was Strong by Robbie Williams, Better Best Forgotten by Steps, and No Scrubs by
04:25
TLC.
04:29
Now what I did was I heard the words TLC and I instantly thought Waterfalls, and I know
04:35
that was a hit when I was in college on the Crazy Sexy Cool album, and so all I could
04:41
think was TLC, Waterfalls, and I said 1996, it could have been 96 or 97, but I got it
04:48
wildly wrong, I should have thought about it a bit longer, and it was 1999, so I was
04:55
three years out, I didn't even get the one year out, which you always want to hear when
04:58
you're on Popmaster.
05:01
So I was still on 12 points after five questions, so I took a little bit of a hit there, but
05:06
the next song is another bonus, remember Cops and Robbers?
05:10
So Fergal Sharkey released a song called You Little Thief, and it was a follow up to his
05:16
only number one, What Was That Called?
05:20
And luckily on the radio you get the music playing so you get a little bit of time to
05:24
think about this one, and I had the tune in my head for Fergal Sharkey, the other hit
05:28
he had, and I was singing it, and then it suddenly came to me by the time the music
05:35
had finished, so it was A Good Heart, which was correct, so I got another six points there,
05:40
so that took me to 18 points, which was good.
05:43
So question seven, this is back to three pointers, having had number ones in the 60s and 70s,
05:51
the song You Win Again was the only number one of the 80s for which group?
05:59
That was of course the Bee Gees, so I got three points there, so I think that took me
06:04
up to 21 points, so I'd already levelled with my opponent there, so that was good, so we
06:09
could be going to a tie break, but number eight, luckily it was a question about one
06:14
of my favourite albums, or a song from one of my favourite albums.
06:20
So the question was, what was In My Pocket, according to Alanis Morissette's single
06:26
in 1995?
06:29
So the album was Jagged Little Peel, one of my favourite albums ever, every song is
06:34
an absolute banger on that album, the song is Hand In My Pocket, so I got that one correct,
06:39
so that took me to 24 points, and the next bonus we need an audio clip for, which I'm
06:45
just going to play 10 seconds of.
06:48
The question is, we're going to play a song from 1983, please name the song and the artist.
07:08
Recognise that song?
07:10
Luckily, as I said on the radio, I'm normally someone who doesn't like a lot of chat by
07:16
the contestants on Popmaster, but I went against my own rule there, and I heard someone sing
07:23
that at karaoke recently, and it stuck in my head, because it wasn't particularly a
07:29
great karaoke song, but it is We Are Detective by the Thompson Twins, so I was delighted
07:35
to get that, and that took me up to 30 points.
07:39
So the Alanis Morissette question got me to 24, that got me to 30 points, so delighted.
07:45
And the last question, the question was, question 10, back to free points, David Dundas had
07:50
his only top 10 hit in 1976, with which top 3 song?
07:56
So that's David Dundas, what was his only top 10 hit?
08:00
The answer was Jeans On, and as I said to Ken on the radio, I've never even heard of
08:05
him or that song, but I'd already got what I needed to get, and that was 30 points.
08:13
So I got to go through to the 3 in 10, which was delightful, but then I got the 3 in 10,
08:21
I say I got the 3 in 10, I got the artist I had to name 3 songs in 10 seconds for, and
08:26
it was Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel.
08:30
Now this isn't my era of expertise, I don't like people who say that was before I was
08:37
born or blah blah blah, things like that, because a lot of things were before you're
08:43
born, I'm sure you know it, but anyway, this isn't my era of expertise.
08:47
So I managed to suddenly remember Come Up and See Me, Make Me Smile, that was the only
08:53
one I got, so I only got 1 in 10, but there are many hits as people keep telling me afterwards,
08:57
but there are a lot of people who said they wouldn't have had a clue either, but you had
09:01
Judy Teen, Here Comes The Sun, and other songs like that I could have said, but I never would
09:07
have got that.
09:08
So a really incredible experience, I hope you've enjoyed this video as much as I've
09:14
been saying it, I know I've been stuttering over a few bits, but yeah, let us know how
09:19
you got on, comment on the Facebook page, comment at the bottom of this story of how
09:25
you got on with my questions, I know there's a few people who probably got 39s, a few people
09:31
who got a lot less, so yes, it'll be interesting to see how people get on with the questions.
