00:00Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Fantastic
00:06this afternoon to speak to Stacey Dooley. For many reasons, this is your first stage
00:10play. You did it in the West End, now you're on tour. But the play is a fabulous one, isn't
00:15it? 222 A Ghost Story. In our area, you are doing Crawley, Guildford and Southampton. It's
00:22a cracking play. Is that the reason why you made your stage debut with this?
00:27Yes. No, I echo that entirely. It is a cracking play. You know, it's been sort of termed a
00:32modern classic, hasn't it? And I think, yeah, I think for good reason. I went to watch it
00:39initially, you know, just as a guest, a guest. Member of the audience. Another right kind
00:49of phrase. Member of the audience. Kev took me along. He had seen it when Lily Allen was
00:54in it. So she obviously, you know, she was the original, the OG Jenny. And then we went
00:58to go and see it with Mandip Gill. And she was phenomenal. And then, yeah, when they sort
01:03of approached me and asked me if I'd be interested in auditioning, I sort of jumped at the chance.
01:08And it was certainly unknown territory. But I just, yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole
01:11experience. Did it last year, like you said, in the Gilgud. And then when, yeah, tour came
01:16along, Kev and I, we were sort of, yeah, desperate to, desperate to do it.
01:20Does it surprise you how you've taken to the stage?
01:25Yeah, I mean, it's kind of, you know, I've always been a bit of an opportunist. I think
01:29if something comes along and you fancy it, you've just got to go for it. And you have
01:33to audition and you have to work really hard and you have to be, you know, open to direction.
01:38And, you know, I just was like a sponge. I was just like watching everyone and I saw
01:42what works and, you know, I sort of understood what I felt comfy doing. And yeah, it's been
01:51a total joy. It's been one of the funnest gigs I've ever said yes to.
01:55And you mentioned a couple of times it was Kev who took you along to see it. Point is, that's
02:01Kevin Clifton who's in it with you now. And you would have thought that could, I don't
02:06know, potentially slightly awkward to be in it with your partner, but clearly, absolutely
02:10not.
02:12Yeah. Well, we haven't worked together for seven years. You know what I mean? Like we
02:16first worked together in 2018.
02:19On something quite special.
02:21But it just made sense. Like, you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But it felt like this, you
02:25know, the sort of USP, I suppose, is, you know, they've always cast unexpectedly and I think
02:30it's worked well. But they've never had a real life couple before.
02:35Playing Jenny and Sam. And of course, you know, that means that, you know, we've sort
02:40of got this shorthand that wouldn't exist in any other dynamics. So, yeah, we're making
02:46the most of it. Just, yeah, sort of, yeah, milking it dry.
02:50Oh, and do you think the audience can sense that you are actually properly in real life
02:55an item?
02:56Yeah, I mean, you'd hope so. You know, lots of people have been very sort of complimentary
03:00and, you know, without giving too much away, you know, how the night unfolds. I think it
03:08does work in our favour, the idea that, you know, it's very believable, it's totally plausible
03:12that they are together. So, yeah, it's hard to talk about, isn't it, without giving too
03:20much away. But we've been having, we've had a scream this tour, honestly, I'm not saying
03:26this to sort of, you know, toe the line or whatever. It's a great, great cast. The audiences
03:30have been so sort of gracious and so generous. And yeah, we've only got, I think we've got
03:37like five weeks left at the minute. And then we're done. Yeah.
03:41Well, congratulations on it. Really looking forward to seeing it again.
03:45Are you going to come?
03:46You bet.
03:47Yeah.
03:48Which one are you coming to?
03:49And enjoy it all the more for knowing. You know, it's fantastic to see it without knowing.
03:53But once you know the secret, I think you'll enjoy it all the more. So looking forward
03:58to it. And really lovely to speak to you. Thank you.
04:00Which one are you coming to, Phil?
04:02Probably Southampton, I hope.
04:03Okay. All right. I'll make sure we're on top form.
04:05I'm sure you will be. Thank you.
04:08Thanks for your time.
