00:00Good morning. My name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Really lovely
00:06this morning to speak to Daniel Casey. Now, this is significant, isn't it? You're going
00:10back to Midsummer Murders after something like 17 years, but going back to it on the
00:16stage in a different role. And you're saying it's a tribute to just how important it was
00:22in your career that you did think about going back to it and did want to.
00:26Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I had such a wonderful time playing Sergeant Troy. And yeah, when
00:33I was asked to play Chief Inspector Barnaby, it was a shock, but I'm about the same age
00:38as John was, John Nettles, when he played the part. And I just thought, yeah, the timing
00:43felt right. It felt really natural to, when I read the script, it felt really natural to
00:48play him. And I'm really, really excited. We've had an amazing rehearsal period and I'm really
00:54excited to bring this to audiences all over the country.
00:58And is it going to be a different beast on the stage to the telly? You were saying it
01:01was inherently theatrical on telly.
01:04Yeah, it is. The television piece, you know, it has a theatricality to it anyway. I think
01:12it works beautifully on the stage. I think one of the wonderful things about it is the audience
01:17becomes a kind of third detective. So there's Barnaby, Troy and the audience, because they're
01:22sitting there trying to work everything out. And we talked in rehearsals a lot about the
01:26hat of suspicion and passing that between each of the different characters and the different
01:33suspects. And I think throughout the play, your suspicions will be taken in different directions.
01:39And I think that's one of the beautiful things about it. And the other thing is British actors
01:43play English Eccentrics incredibly well.
01:46Oh, it sounds brilliant. It sounds a lovely prospect. Really great to speak to you and
01:51all the very best for the tour. Thank you ever so much.
