00:00The government has filed an application to delay adjustments to the pensions of retired
00:05civil servants supported by the High Court pending the outcome of its appeal.
00:11In an affidavit affirmed by Public Services Department Director General Wan Ahmad Dallan
00:16Abdulaziz, the government said there were special circumstances warranting a stay of
00:20the High Court order.
00:23He said the order would affect not just the 56 litigants but also 531,976 pensioners or
00:30their dependents and will cost the government 1.7 billion ringgit.
00:35Wan Ahmad said the payout would also have financial implications for the government,
00:39which will face an uphill task in recovering the payments should it win its appeal.
00:45On January 23, the government filed its notice of appeal seeking to reverse a High Court
00:50order made by Justice Amarjeet Singh.
00:53Amarjeet had ruled that government pensioners were entitled under the Pensions Adjustment
00:57Act of 1980 to pensions corresponding to their adjusted salary.
01:02Under the old scheme, a retiree's pension was to be revised based on the prevailing
01:06salary of incumbent civil servants in the same grade.
01:10In 2013, amendments to the Act introduced a flat rate annual increment of 2%.
