When will the Gateshead Quayside Complex begin construction?

Gateshead Council leader, Councillor Martin Gannon has hinted that an announcement will be made in regards to construction on the long-awaited multi-million pound complex on Gateshead Quayside.

00:14very early in the spring that construction will begin at last on what has been touted

00:19for years as a world-class riverside development. The Labour councillor has said that investors

00:24remain committed to the vast regeneration vision and that the North East Mayor is likely

00:29to put forward cash to help close the massive funding gap which has held the project back.

00:34It was estimated just two years ago that the price of the scheme had already spiralled

00:37from £260m to more than £350m. A large plot of land between the Glasshouse Music Centre

00:44and Baltic Art Gallery has already been cleared for the new development, which will be known

00:49as The Sage. Frustration has grown at the lack of construction work on site, which has

00:53been scheduled to begin in autumn 2023. After revised plans for the scheme were granted

00:59plan and permission.
