00:00Redhue Bridge is expected to remain in place for around 50 more years, according to Gateshead
00:06Council officers. Councilors were told that there are currently no plans to decommission the crossing
00:12and there's no need to do so. The bridge was designed and built in the early 1980s
00:18and officers say it continues to be maintained. The discussion followed the demolition of the
00:24A167 flyover in central Gateshead. It was closed after inspections raised concerns about a potential
00:31collapse before a six-month demolition project. Council engineer Trevor Waggett said the structures
00:38share a similar construction approach but were not the same in every respect.
