00:00The legal advisor of an anti-GRAF rally planned for this weekend has hit out at Home Minister
00:07Saifuddin Nasution Ismail for saying that permission must be obtained to hold a gathering
00:13outside the Sogo department store in Kuala Lumpur, calling the remarks ignorant and reckless.
00:19In a statement, Rights Group Lawyers for Liberty director Zayed Malik said Saifuddin's remarks
00:24defy both logic and law.
00:26He said, based on Saifuddin's rationale, no public gathering can be held in Malaysia
00:32as long as surrounding building owners object to it.
00:35Zayed also asked why the government is afraid of an anti-corruption rally when they boasted
00:40about fighting corruption.
00:42Yesterday Saifuddin told the Himpunan Rakyat Benci Raswa Secretariat that prior consent
00:48would be needed from Sogo for the rally to continue.
00:51Zayed also said that the police had no power to declare an assembly unlawful, adding that
00:56the law only required that notice be given.
01:00He said the police and Home Minister are both deliberately ignoring the provisions of the
01:04Peaceful Assembly Act.
