The homicide rate in Trinidad and Tobago has experienced a significant decline of 44 percent in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Up until this evening, there were 15 reported murders, a stark contrast to the 25 recorded at this time last year.

00:00Assistant Police Commissioner Richard Smith broke down the murder by division, highlighting
00:04that both the North Central Division and the Central Division had seen marked reductions
00:09in homicides.
00:11The North Central Division, which includes areas like St. Joseph, Baracus Valley, Tinopuna,
00:16and Arruka, had no murders compared to four last year.
00:20The Central Division, which covers Chaguanas, Hoover, Kearney, Canopia, Freeport, Grand
00:26Coover, and Londonville, also reported a decrease with just one murder this year compared
00:31to four in 2024.
00:34Other divisions also showed declines.
00:36In 2024, as compared to 2025.
00:40So we have Porter's Pen Division had five murders in 2024, around the same period.
00:45This year, they have two murders.
00:48Southern Division had zero murders last year.
00:51Now they have one.
00:53Western Division had three.
00:54Now they have two.
00:56Northern North Division had two, now three, 2025.
01:01North Central Division had four for 2024, and zero for 2025.
01:06Central Division had four for 2024, one for 2025.
01:11Southwestern zero, as compared to one.
01:15Eastern Division zero, as compared to one.
01:18Northeastern Division three, as compared to two.
01:22And Tobago Division two, as compared to one.
01:24So we have 14 murders thus far this year, as compared to 25 last year.
01:31Smith attributed the drop in homicides to improved policing strategies and increased
01:36community engagement, which have helped to address crime more effectively in these areas.
01:42Authorities remain hopeful that this downward trend will continue as the year progresses,
01:47but they urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to further
01:53ensure safety across the nation.
