Leader of the United National Congress Kamla Persad-Bissessar is labelling the process by which Energy Minister Stuart Young was selected to be the Prime Minister as "undemocratic."


She says, it is the people who should choose the Prime Minister, and she is calling on Dr. Keith Rowley to call the General Election before he resigns.

00:00Although Stuart Young has been selected by the PNM MPs in the House of Representatives
00:05to be the replacement for Dr Keith Rowley, who will resign as Prime Minister before his term ends,
00:11a date for this resignation is still up in the air.
00:14Opposition leader Kamala Prasad Bisasa is against the process used at a parliamentary caucus
00:19where Young and Penelope Beckles offer themselves up for the position,
00:23and Young won with 11 versus 9 votes.
00:27What goes on in the PNM, that is their business.
00:30But you must respect the democracy and the rule of law.
00:36And we should not stomach someone picking out his gopher to name him his successor.
00:43The PNM must choose the next Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago in a free and fair election.
00:50Prasad Bisasa is raising other concerns pertaining to the suitability of Young for the post.
00:56Among them, she cites the incident in which his ex-stepdaughter, Christiana Sanka,
01:02was arrested and charged by police for possession of drugs and guns in a $3.8 million bust.
01:08But that's not all, as she makes yet another allegation.
01:13Young's brother, his company, remember that?
01:18NCB Global Finance was given state funds, you know how much?
01:23$4 billion taxpayer dollars.
01:26She also notes instances where Young has had to recuse himself from the cabinet.
01:31How many times? Over 101 times.
01:36Do you understand why you recuse yourself from a meeting of the cabinet?
01:40Some of you do, and if you don't let me explain, because it's very important,
01:44it means that you have a conflict of interest of the decision being taken in the cabinet.
01:51So he walks outside, the friends and family of the M.B. sit down there,
01:55the 12 of them who vote for him today, they sit down inside that cabinet and say,
01:59yes, go ahead with that contract, go ahead with whatever it is, go ahead.

02:21this whole cabinet is sucking this country dry, and we must make sure to vote them out,

02:29Pasad Bisasa has this to say to Prime Minister Rowley.
02:32And I say today again, we demand, Rowley, according to JJ, go now.
02:39If you're going, just go, just go, just go and call the election now.
02:43What are you hanging about for?
02:45Dr. Rowley has stated on more than one occasion that the person selected to succeed him,
02:50who at this time is young, will be responsible for providing an election date.
