What do you think could be done to improve the police’s image and rebuilt trust, and do recent figures suggesting more than half of people have lost trust in the police, surprise you? We spoke with people on the streets of Newcastle.

00:05from some behaviour by a copper last summer.

00:08I know it's going to drag on, but, yeah, I'm not a fan.

00:12I actually said to the officer that spoke to me,

00:14this is the reason people don't trust you or like you.

00:17It's very important that people trust the police

00:20because otherwise you're kind of living in a state of terror,

00:24which is not healthy for a society.

00:27I believe... I don't know what the police can do,

00:30but good press is needed for the police, certainly.

00:33I think it probably comes down to there's less police on the streets,

00:37and that's mainly because of funding.

00:39Yeah.

00:40And I think that can have a sort of a bad impact on the police,

00:44and I don't think that's deserved because it's not their fault.

00:47I think with more funding, you'd have more police on the street,

00:50and I think that would improve public opinion.

00:52No, like what he said about good press is really important.

00:55I can't remember the last time I heard a positive thing

00:57about the police in the news, honestly.

00:59They do many great things.
