A damning review finds serious crimes were committed by Metropolitan Police officers who were allowed to join the force without proper checks.
Transcript
00:00A review has found that more than 100 officers and staff in the Metropolitan Police committed
00:07crimes or serious misconduct after not being properly vetted. Among them were two serial
00:13rapists, David Carrick and Cliff Mitchell. Thousands of checks were missed by senior
00:18leaders during a recruitment drive to rapidly increase officer numbers. The report says this
00:24allowed unsuitable individuals to join the force and damaged public trust. The Home Secretary
00:30called the failures a dereliction of duty and has ordered further inspection. The Met says
00:35the practices are now fixed and insists the vast majority of officers serve with integrity
00:41while acknowledging serious past failings.
