Is Stuart Young the best pick for Prime Minister? Will he get the nod of the PNM base? Can he get the support of the people on the ground? These were some of the questions put to members of the public by TV6 today, and despite concerns raised in some quarters, we found that many are willing to give him a chance. Rynessa Cutting reports.

00:00With Energy Minister Stuart Young poised to become the next Prime Minister upon Dr. Rowley's resignation,
00:07one of the biggest concerns being raised is will he be able to get the support of the PNM base?
00:14For one die-hard PNM, the answer is yes.
00:18Some people feel that Stuart Young doesn't represent the PNM base. How do you feel about that?
00:24I personally say he will do his best. Stuart Young will do his best.
00:29And I satisfy with who Rowley picked and put in place.
00:34Once it's PNM, you will support?
00:36All the time, all the time. Since I know myself. Since I know myself voting, it's PNM I'm voting for.
00:43Trust me. Don't care whoever it is. PNM. PNM forever.
00:50One gentleman who identified himself as a Trinidadian first issued the following reminder to the population of this multicultural society.
01:00I identify as a Trinidadian, not by my ethnic background.
01:06We are all inclusive. That's what our national anthem stands for, what it says.
01:11Demographics aside, what about competency?
01:14One of Young's Port of Spain North constituents believes he has what it takes.
01:19Competency is dependable. He's an honest man and he is well grounded in his community.
01:27The community that he is in charge of, let me put it like that.
01:31He does a lot for the people, I must say. It mightn't be everything, but he does reach the people, the youth especially.
01:42But one Belmont native questions whether Stuart Young can connect with the people.
01:48His records show that in oil and engineering and gas and those levels, right? So he may come off good.
01:57But I don't see much of those politicians have a groove with the ground floor.
02:07If you don't know the ground floor levels to make them feel comfortable.
02:12We don't actually want to be begging. We need to be understood.
02:17For one man, Dr. Rowley's early resignation and the default appointment of Stuart Young is a problem.
02:24Now with the prime minister stepping down, right?
02:30I think it should be up to the people to choose who they want as a prime minister.
02:37And despite knowing that only Stuart Young and Penelope Beckles Robinson put themselves forward as candidates for political leader,
02:45one PNM loyalist still wanted to register his pick.
02:49Now this is not cast in stone because they haven't had the elections as yet.
02:53Who would you like to see lead the PNM?
02:56Well, as I said, Dr. Amy Brown, as a senior, a man who did well.
03:02You have charisma, you have standard, you have respect and pride.
03:07That's it in a nutshell.
03:09Renassa Cutting, TV6 News.
