00:00While wishing Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley well in his upcoming retirement,
00:05Opposition MP Rushton Parry urged the country not to forget the lessons his
00:10time in office has taught. He says it is important so that Dr. Rowley's mistakes
00:15in government are not repeated. His stewardship for the last 10 years has to
00:21be under scrutiny because there is no facet of this country that has improved
00:26in the last 10 years. None of the five major areas, economy and finance,
00:31infrastructure, national security, health, education. Parry says political analysts
00:36have been saying for some time that a change in party leadership would ensure
00:40success at the polls. It's why he believes Dr. Rowley's move strategically
00:45will do the PNM well going into a general election. Leadership is not only
00:50changing the leader but when the leader change, the vision for the party change,
00:55the vision for the country changes. The whole idea of the attraction, the
01:01gravitational pull of people to get the best minds in the country comes to you.
01:06Clearly the PNM is now out in front and I think they are probably an arm's
01:12length away from the finish line. So the UNC has some catching up to do. Asked
01:18whether he believes his own political leader should step away from electoral
01:22politics. I absolutely believe that the party is ready for a fundamental shift
01:27and fundamental change and if in the wisdom of Mrs. Possad-Bissessa, this is a
01:32plus for the party, well I encourage her to think about it and perhaps get some
01:36action going but there is a process for that to happen. To answer your question, the party is
01:41ready for renewal. However, Parry says there is a process to succession and
01:47this should be followed. I don't believe that Mrs. Possad-Bissessa must just step
01:52aside and say, fellas look, Parry you take the walk or Munilal you take the walk or
01:56Barry you take the walk. No. If she has to step aside as the political leader,
02:01call the election, there is precedent for leadership elections. In 2010, there was a
02:10leadership election in January when Mr. Pandey was removed and there was a huge
02:16win for the party by May of the same year. I think any fundamental change in
02:23the leadership face, in the leadership structure of the UNC will augur well to
02:28put us neck to neck, shoulder to shoulder with the PNM going into an election.
