00:00A major programme to create new low-cost council houses across County Durham
00:04and to help residents get onto the housing ladder has taken a step closer.
00:07In July 2023, the Council agreed on an updated plan to build new council homes across the region
00:13to provide accommodation for those in need.
00:15An initial target of up to 500 homes by 2026 was revised after the local authority admitted it wasn't achievable due to delays.
00:22The programme is instead due to be delivered by 2029, but could be extended beyond that.
00:27Alongside new-build developments, work is ongoing to convert buildings and acquire properties
00:31in areas that there's limited land but a need for affordable housing.
00:35A Council report read the Council will deliver 500 new-build council houses
00:38and associated infrastructure as part of the Council House Delivery Programme.
00:42Construction work is currently ongoing at the former Bishop Auckland Registry Office
00:46and the former Children's Home at Tow Law to deliver a further 10 units of accommodation for single people
00:51as part of a programme to convert and repurpose surplus properties.
00:54The Council anticipate that both these units will be completed and ready for occupation by the end of March.
