The man who has gotten the nod for the PNM safe seat of Laventille West and is set to take his place as its next MP promises to restore peace to the marginalized, crime-riddled area.
This, as the PNM conducted what it says was a rigorous screening exercise at Balisier Houise last evening.
Urvashi Tiwari Roopnarine reports.

00:00It's pandemonium at Balazet House as young attorney Kareem Masal gets the party hierarchy's
00:06nod to kick off his career in electoral politics in the Laventille West safe seat.
00:12It's a seat formerly held by party stalwart Fitzgerald Hines, who was bowed out of electoral
00:19politics.
00:20Party groups 19 and all have chosen Youngblood.
00:24And from the show of support at the party's headquarters, it would seem the seat will
00:28remain in the PNM's hands for decades to come.
00:32It has not been an easy road but we fought a good and clean and great fight and this
00:43story is not just about Kareem Masal, it's about every young person from East Port of
00:52Spain who dare to dream and dare to try to achieve their true potential no matter which
01:01community they come from.
01:02Masal is from Beetham Gardens, an area considered home to the Seventh Gang.
01:08And the constituency he has been called to serve is one in which several rival gangs
01:13occupy turf across its length and breadth.
01:17Could he be the bearer of peace?
01:19I would be a representative for all of Laventille West.
01:25No one part would be favoured.
01:27Every single one, every single community, every single person in every community and
01:33every part of our constituency would have my fullest support.
01:37And it is a testament of persons from all over East Port of Spain here tonight who,
01:44in a bit when we go back home and go back to their homes, may not be able to cross a
01:48border, cross a street, but here they are together, true of Laventille West, and my
01:52number one priority will be bringing back peace and love in East Port of Spain.
01:59Twelve other candidates were selected on Monday night, bringing to 32 the total number of
02:04candidates selected by the People's National Movement as they head off into the 2025 general
02:11election.
02:12The next batch of selection takes place on the 20th of December for the constituencies
02:18of Tobago East and West La Brea, and Adrian Leonce's Laventille East, Mova.
