NSW Police investigate after fatal stabbing in Newcastle

A 22-year-old man has died after being stabbed on a busy street in Newcastle overnight. Police say the man had been involved in a 'violent altercation' with a group of people, but they are still figuring out the exact circumstances of the attack.

00:00A Hamilton restaurant strip turned crime scene.

00:05A 22-year-old man was stabbed here in the early hours of Sunday morning.

00:09I heard some shouts because they just live around the corner.

00:13It's normally a chill street and no noise or anything.

00:18I've just moved to the local area so it's a bit of a shock to me.

00:22We know so far that a violent altercation did occur between this young man and a group

00:28of people on Beaumont Street.

00:30What led up to that altercation is under investigation.

00:34It's important for us to understand what happened to this young man.

00:38It is important for us to do that so we can assist his poor family.

00:42Paramedics and members of the public tried to save the man before an ambulance rushed

00:47him to hospital.

00:48Unfortunately a short time later that 22-year-old man from Newcastle succumbed to those injuries

00:54and lost his life.

00:56Knowing what I know now, it's really sad and tragic.

01:00Police are certain there are people who know what happened.

01:03We asked them to think about the fact that a young 22-year-old person has lost his life

01:08today.

01:09And there is a family who is in deep mourning trying to come to terms with the circumstances

01:13of that.

01:14Police say there's no ongoing threat to the wider community.
