A man charged over a fatal stabbing in Newcastle has been refused bail and ordered to undergo a mental health assessment.

00:00Police alleged between 9.40 and 10am yesterday that 53-year-old Graham John Norman murdered 83-year-old Peter Caldwell.
00:12Now, police alleged that the pair didn't know each other and that the alleged murder happened in the shopping precinct at Charlestown.
00:20Now, today, Mr Norman's matter was heard briefly in a bail court here in Newcastle.
00:27He didn't appear, but his lawyer appeared on his behalf.
00:32Now, she didn't apply for bail, but did ask that the magistrate endorse papers for a mental health assessment.
00:41She said that her client had never been in custody before, and she asked for this mental health assessment, alleging that he may be suffering from a condition.
00:51So, the magistrate adjourned the matter.
00:54You know, bail wasn't applied for, as I said, and it was formally refused.
00:59The matter adjourned to Newcastle Court in October.
