Antisocial behaviour and burglaries have more than halved in three south of Liverpool wards
00:05
thanks to a project to cut crime and create safer streets.
00:08
We're in Liverpool 15 by Smithdown Road area with a lot of students, a lot of transients,
00:14
a lot of HMOs, houses in multiple occupation, a lot of environmental challenge and quite a
00:20
high rate of burglary and that's why that was chosen for this particular project.
00:24
The targeted crime reduction programme was set up by the City Council to improve safety and
00:28
community spirit in Smithdown, Arundel and Edge Hill.
00:31
There is a lot of litter on the streets, that's always been a nuisance
00:36
and yeah I realise that it's a problem of the wind as well but also people
00:44
need to be more responsible, not littering I think.
00:46
You're constantly watching for broken glass once the students come back.
00:52
I know they bring a lot of money to the area and they are lovely children in general.
00:58
We've had some lovely students.
01:01
It looks unpleasant,
01:05
yeah and it doesn't paint a nice picture of the people in the area because it could look very nice otherwise.
01:12
We do know there are issues in this area of antisocial behaviour and mess.
01:15
We absolutely urge anybody to report that to the council.
01:19
Also of course if you see a crime to make sure that's reported.
01:22
As part of the Safer Streets initiative, secure communal bins have been installed
01:26
for more than 680 homes, helping to prevent burglars gaining access to the rear of the
01:30
properties. This also resulted in fly-tipping reduced by nearly 50%.
01:35
As you can see behind us, we've taken the waste out of the back alleyways
01:39
and had these Euro bins. They are challenging to keep these areas clean
01:44
whichever way you do it and whichever way you put the waste.
01:48
But obviously by taking the bins out the back alleys that means people aren't coming and going
01:51
and opening those alley gates. So we spent money on repairing the alley gates, securing the back
01:55
alleys, transferring the waste onto the street in these big bins.
