00:00The NHS is broken, it's unwell. I've been working in the NHS for nearly 30 years.
00:06After doing this review I thought it's bad, but I must say I was surprised,
00:13I was shocked, if I could use that word, in terms of the state of the NHS.
00:18The state of the health service and the state of the nation's health,
00:22these are two separate things and we need to do something about them.
00:25We obviously have to work on prevention and reducing the burden of disease
00:30and that's within the remit of our Chief Medical Officer
00:33and we have an exceptional person in that post who will be driving that.
00:37And at the same time we need to fix the NHS.
00:40We need to get the hospitals, the primary care centres, we need to get the workforce
00:45and with the right leadership, with the right strategy, which will be coming next,
00:50we've done this before, we could do it again.
00:53I expect this to be more than four years, five years, I think probably even up to eight years.
01:00It's been deteriorating in an incremental way for about a decade,
01:07a decade and a half, and it will take time to get it back.
