00:00Glasgow is expected to host the next Commonwealth Games in 2026, with the deadline to formally
00:05accept or decline the offer limbing. The event was originally due to take place in the Australian
00:10state of Victoria, however the country withdrew because of rising costs. Talks have been underway
00:15with Commonwealth Games Scotland, discussing a scaled back version of events, with the
00:20Federation of Capital pledging to contribute £100 million. The Scottish government has
00:26warned no public funds will be handed over, and that hosting the Games would carry a reputation
00:31risk and financial risk, though the Scottish body insists it would not need the taxpayer
00:36money. While a final decision is to be made in the coming weeks, talks continue. The challenge
00:42is that what is being proposed is a smaller version of the 2014 Games hosted here, with
00:47fewer sports over fewer sites, a model not previously done. The government is concerned
00:53over whether it can be achieved or not, and whether it will harm their strong reputation
00:57achieved from their 2014 goal.
