00:00As Glasgow celebrates its 850th anniversary, a year's programme of activities led by the City
00:05Council has officially launched. Glasgow gained its borough status in 1175, which at the time
00:11gave it a degree of self-government and special privileges. This gave Glasgow the right to trade
00:16and hold markets, the ability to boost its own economy and attract more people, traders and
00:21businesses. It signified a recognition from the King, which at the time was King William I of
00:26Scotland, and laid the foundation for Glasgow to evolve from a small religious settlement
00:31into an important economic centre. Without this pivotal moment in history, Glasgow may not have
00:36become the cultural epicentre it is today for Scotland. A list of businesses and community
00:41hubs across the city are participating in events to celebrate this huge milestone. This includes
00:46putting the River Clyde at the centre of storytelling, enhancing Glasgow's reputation,
00:52reflecting on its transformation and growth since its 800th year,
00:55with celebrated and speeding up ambitions for the future.
