00:00P9 DAP Chairman Chow Kwan Yau has announced he will not contest the state party elections
00:07on September 22nd, thus stepping down as the party's state leader.
00:12He said he made his decision despite receiving a nomination letter from DAP headquarters
00:17on August 27th.
00:19When asked if this decision would affect his role as chief minister, he said it was ultimately
00:23up to the DAP central leadership.
00:26Later, the party's secretary-general, Lok Siu Fook, announced that Chow would continue
00:30to serve as chief minister and complete his term.
00:35Chow had also said when he was appointed to a second term as chief minister, Lok had
00:40asked him to work on a succession plan in Penang.
00:44He said not defending the chairmanship is the first step in this plan, allowing his
00:48successor more than three years to prepare for the next general election.
00:53Despite bowing out of the state party leadership race, Chow will remain a vice-chairman at
00:57national level.
