00:00Penang Chief Minister Chao Konyao has played down the likelihood of the next state election
00:05coinciding with the 16th general election. Chao said the election cycles were already disrupted
00:12after the last state polls in August 2023, about nine months after the previous general election
00:18in November 2022. He said holding the state and federal elections concurrently would be unfair
00:25to voters if their state government still had a significant amount of time left in its term.
00:30The DAP leader added that Penang still has two and a half years to go to complete its full term.
00:37Nonetheless, Chao said he would abide by any decision by the DAP leadership on when to dissolve
00:43the Penang Assembly. While GE15 was held in 2022, only three state governments dissolved their state
00:49assemblies to hold their elections at the same time, Perles, Perak and Pahang. Penang, Selengor,
00:56Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu opted to dissolve their legislatures later for fear
01:02of floods during GE15, with fresh elections only due for these six states in late 2028.
