Round 9 of the 2000 F1 season at Magny Cours.
Transcript
00:00:00Welcome to Manicours and the French Grand Prix, where 100 years ago, and not far from here,
00:00:06James Gordon Bennett, the proprietor of the New York Journal,
00:00:09and the lover, it has to be said, of the newly invented internal combustion engine,
00:00:13issued a challenge to the world.
00:00:15An international series of motor races, the first of which would be held between Paris and Lyon.
00:00:21Well, the Gordon Bennett Cup paved the way for the French Grand Prix,
00:00:24and the French Grand Prix opened, for French motorsport,
00:00:27a rich seam of cars, drivers, circuits, and teams.
00:00:31It also brought names to the common vernacular of the motor racing fan.
00:00:35Names like The Pits, Checkered Flag, and Grand Prix, Grand Prize.
00:00:39So here's to French motorsport, here's to where it all began,
00:00:43the birthplace of international motor racing.
00:00:45Here's to James Gordon Bennett, the centenary of the first international major motorsporting event.
00:00:58FIA Formula One World Championship
00:01:17It's round nine of the FIA Formula One World Championship,
00:01:20the 50th Grand Prix of France from Manicours.
00:01:23Welcome to the Mercedes-Benz pre-race show on Fox Sportsnet.
00:01:28Hello, I'm John Watson, sitting in for Mike Joy this weekend,
00:01:31and I'm here with five-time Le Mans winner, Derek Bell.
00:01:34And down in the pits from F1 Racing Magazine is Peter Windsor.
00:01:39Well, looking at Jarno Trulli sitting in the pits,
00:01:41and these are the cars waiting to go out onto track.
00:01:44Michael Schumacher, that pole setter, absolutely stunning qualifying from Schumacher.
00:01:49But let's have a look at this week's show menu to see what's coming up.
00:01:53The Jordan engine deal, great news for the Jordan team.
00:01:58Getting off to a good start in Formula One, sounds very easy.
00:02:01Well, we'll look at that a little bit later.
00:02:03Remember Kulthard back in Canada?
00:02:05Qualifying highlights, and there were plenty of them.
00:02:11And Derek and Frenzel take a drive around the Indy Formula One circuit.
00:02:16They were on route up to Canada, and they dropped off.
00:02:22Michael Schumacher now out on track, and of course, Schumacher dominated qualifying.
00:02:27Wasn't just quite so dominant this morning in the warm-up.
00:02:30He was only third quickest behind the two McLarens, but don't worry about it.
00:02:33This man did all the work he needs for this afternoon's Grand Prix on Friday and Saturday.
00:02:42So, let's have a look and see how the point standings are.
00:02:45Let's look at the Drivers' Championship.
00:02:46Michael Schumacher, 22 points advantage.
00:02:49And it's David Kulthard, not his teammate Micah Hakkinen.
00:02:52Hakkinen's in third place.
00:02:53Rubens Barrichello in fourth.
00:02:55A fine fifth from Giancarlo Fisichella for Benetton.
00:02:58And Ralf Schumacher in the Williams BMW is in sixth place.
00:03:01And in the Constructors, it's Ferrari still in the lead.
00:03:0484 to 66 of McLaren, 18 of Benetton, 15 of Williams, 10 of Jordan, and 6 of BAR Honda.
00:03:12Oh, Ferrari.
00:03:13I mean, look at Heinz-Hauer-Frenzen.
00:03:15Jordan now makes his way out.
00:03:16And the teams, they go in and out.
00:03:18They make a lap, come back in.
00:03:19Any final adjustments they want to make to their cars.
00:03:21Micah Salo, a man in the news also.
00:03:23Toyota reputed to be interested in him.
00:03:26As Rubens Barrichello and Micah Hakkinen back in the garage.
00:03:29So, there's been a lot of news since Canada.
00:03:33And we're going to have a little look at that with Peter Windsor.
00:03:36So, as Hakkinen's car goes back into the garage, let's look at the news.
00:03:42Well, here at the Manicour Paddock is a glow with the news
00:03:45that Eddie Jordan has signed a five-year factory deal with Honda.
00:03:49He's been working on that for a long time, of course,
00:03:51virtually from the moment Craig Pollitt actually secured an exclusive factory deal with Honda.
00:03:55And we'll be hearing from Eddie in a minute as to how that came about.
00:03:58What it has done, of course, is open the driver market right up
00:04:01because Heinz-Hauer-Frenzen was talking to Jaguar, thinking about leaving Jordan.
00:04:05That probably won't happen now.
00:04:07What will Jaguar do?
00:04:08Well, they're talking to Jenson Button, which would be a good choice in my view.
00:04:11Equally, Jacques Villeneuve has gone to Eddie Jordan and said,
00:04:14Eddie, maybe I should be driving for you now.
00:04:15So, we'll see what happens there.
00:04:17Murray Walker dislocated his hip, sadly, in England.
00:04:20He's got two replacement hips already.
00:04:22But he's making a good recovery.
00:04:23But he's placed in the World Feed TV chair this weekend, taken by James Allen.
00:04:27And we wish Murray the speediest of recoveries.
00:04:30Finally, McLaren have confirmed that Micah Hakkinen will be staying with them.
00:04:33There was really never any doubt about that.
00:04:35But they've also confirmed that David Coulthard will be driving for them again next year.
00:04:39Strong move by Ron Dennis, in my opinion, because what that gives Coulthard is peace of mind.
00:04:43He can relax now, concentrate on the business of trying to win the World Championship.
00:04:46I'm sure you'll agree with me, guys.
00:04:48That is a great move by Ron Dennis.
00:04:50Well, I'm delighted with David Coulthard.
00:04:51I think it's wonderful news for him, particularly the way he's going at the moment.
00:04:54But it makes you wonder whether the fact that he had thought he had the skids under him
00:04:57might have inspired him to greater heights.
00:04:59But in the back of my mind, I can't help thinking it might have been to do with that tragic plane accident
00:05:03that maybe gave him another sparkle and a zest to go for life.
00:05:06Well, Coulthard clearly has responded, as Micah Hakkinen seems to be sort of dozing.
00:05:10I don't know what's going on in Micah's brains, but great for David.
00:05:13But another man who was probably the happiest man in the pack this weekend was Eddie Jordan.
00:05:18We know the reason why, but he's a chance to explain that to Peter Windsor.
00:05:21And Eddie is his usual modest self.
00:05:26Well, it's a huge, huge moment for Jordan.
00:05:28Probably the biggest in, you know, the 30 years that I've been involved in motor racing.
00:05:32Either as a driver or as a team, it's weighing by far the biggest and the greatest opportunity we've ever had.
00:05:38And needless to say, Fox was a major contributor.
00:05:42I mean, all the press and people were saying, why not give a chance to Jordan?
00:05:45Let them see what they can do with a Honda engine.
00:05:47And commentary team, the boys back home, and, you know, I want to say a big thank you.
00:05:52Well, thank you for that, Eddie.
00:05:54Now, the engine BAR have been using is different from yours.
00:05:56Are you going to have to build a new car now around that engine?
00:05:59No, this engine, the contract really starts in January of 2001.
00:06:04So the contract we have with Mugen at the moment will, of course, stay in existence.
00:06:08Well, many congratulations to you, Eddie.
00:06:10I'm sure everyone in the pit lane is saying the same thing.
00:06:12Indeed, has Craig Pollock offered his congratulations to you?
00:06:14I'm not going to get involved in that, Peter.
00:06:16Come on, give me a chance.
00:06:18Listen, give the chap a break.
00:06:20It's going to be a great future for Jordan.
00:06:22And that's all I'm interested in.
00:06:23Thank you very much, Eddie.
00:06:24Congratulations.
00:06:25Thank you.
00:06:26Well, it's wonderful news for Eddie Jordan, of course.
00:06:28But it will mean now that, of course, he can compete against Ferrari and McLaren at the same level, I certainly hope.
00:06:33Yes, he does.
00:06:34Of course, the trouble now, Eddie, you've got nowhere to hide.
00:06:36You've got the factory engine from Honda, and you're going to have to compete against the rest.
00:06:42We're going to have a look at this incident in a little bit more detail.
00:06:44David Coulthard at the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:06:46So join us after the break as we come back to Manicour.
00:06:51Welcome back to the Mercedes-Benz pre-race show on Fox Sportsnet.
00:06:55And we look at Rubens Barrichello.
00:06:56He's decided it's time to go back out on the track.
00:06:59He's been in and out and in and out.
00:07:01And there's one of the stars of qualifying.
00:07:03Eddie Irvine really manhandled that Jaguar around the 2.74 mile Manicour circuit.
00:07:10But let's have a look at this Manicour track.
00:07:13Well, as John mentioned, 2.74 miles.
00:07:17Well, as John mentioned, 2.74 miles.
00:07:19It's the least light, probably, of all the circuits they go to.
00:07:22Overtaking Cabey Dunne down into Adelaide hairpin with 40 mile an hour turning in point.
00:07:27But it is a very smooth circuit, and it's very light on brakes.
00:07:32Let's do a lap with Jean Alesi.
00:07:35As he comes out of turn one, he's in first gear, second gear, third gear, fourth gear, fifth gear through the Grand Cours.
00:07:41170 mile an hour left-hander.
00:07:43It's very difficult braking through a left-hander into a right.
00:07:46You have to have the most beautiful balanced car so you don't get too much push.
00:07:50You need all the speed to carry it down this long straight up to 185 miles an hour.
00:07:57As I said, the circuit is very smooth.
00:07:59They run the very soft, super soft tyre.
00:08:02He brakes right down to 40 miles an hour for the Adelaide hairpin.
00:08:05He wants maximum traction as he comes out of there, obviously,
00:08:08so he can pull perfect acceleration up through the little right-left,
00:08:13and then through the slower right-left, the tighter right-left, I should say,
00:08:17and then up into the 180 left-hand corner.
00:08:21Second gear corner, third gear corner as he goes around here.
00:08:2350 miles an hour.
00:08:24Again, you need maximum traction as you come out of here,
00:08:27working your way along this 175 mile an hour straight.
00:08:31Then down to fourth gear as he enters Imola, goes through there.
00:08:34Wonderful set of corners to watch when you're actually watching from the outside.
00:08:38A bit of twitch of opposite lock as he comes to Chateau d'Eau.
00:08:41Accelerate down for the last couple of corners of the circuit.
00:08:44Up to the chicane at 160 miles an hour.
00:08:46Brakes hard.
00:08:47Second gear over the kerbs.
00:08:48Keep it in tight to the left here.
00:08:50You want maximum traction.
00:08:51The only circuit you go over the start-finish line in first gear.
00:08:54That was a lap with Jean Alessi.
00:08:57Well, Michael Schumacher again just doing one of those laps before he has to go on the grid.
00:09:01The pit lane, of course, it's open for 15 minutes, but at a quarter before the race starts.
00:09:06That's 2 o'clock local time in France.
00:09:08You have to go on the grid.
00:09:10And I suspect Michael Schumacher is using this as his last opportunity to check out that Ferrari.
00:09:18Well, we have been talking about the starts and how important it is,
00:09:21and the support crew that is now necessary to get a Grand Prix car to fire up.
00:09:26So let's have a look at that in more detail with Peter Windsor.
00:09:31Yes, an atmosphere of calm efficiency here in the Telefonica Minardi garage
00:09:35where they're preparing Marc Genet's car for the French Grand Prix.
00:09:39But soon, of course, the car will be ready for an engine start-up.
00:09:42How many mechanics and how many tasks are involved actually in starting a modern Grand Prix car?
00:09:49Even while the driver is kidding himself up,
00:09:51the process begins with the installation of a three-dimensional engine mapping program by the two Cosworth engineers.
00:09:56Although this engine is now officially badged as a Fondmetal and should be named as such.
00:10:01These maps define all of the engine's basic running parameters
00:10:04according to the nature of the circuit, ambient temperature, air pressure, etc.
00:10:08The engineers talk direct to the car's ECU, its electronic control unit, its Magneti Morelli frame.
00:10:14This little black box is located in the side of the chassis
00:10:17and in the garage is connected to the car's main power sources by an umbilical cord.
00:10:22On the grid, of course, it is driven by separate sources.
00:10:26An engineer checks for air pressure locks.
00:10:28Formula 1 engines use pneumatic valve springs.
00:10:30The mechanic cranks the air starter and the engine hopefully bursts into life.
00:10:34It idles at around 3,800 revs
00:10:37as engineers monitor both engine and gearbox numbers on laptops.
00:10:41Around the back, a separate power pack simulates car hydraulic pressure.
00:10:46So there you have it.
00:10:47Seven Menardi mechanics and engineers involved in the start-up of one of their cars
00:10:50and that number would probably increase to something like nine or ten at Ferrari and McLaren.
00:10:55What it doesn't include, of course, is the driver.
00:10:57He doesn't need to do anything. He just sits there.
00:10:59But once the engine's running, he needs to keep it running.
00:11:02David Coulthard, of course, had a problem with that in Canada two weeks ago.
00:11:06Well, I know it's more high-tech these days, but I remember, well, you should start them with a key.
00:11:10Derek, I think in my day, we had somebody on an air gun.
00:11:12We had just a single guy at the back of the car.
00:11:14You'd wave your hand in the air.
00:11:16The engine would start up and then they'd send you.
00:11:18But there are the scenes on the grid.
00:11:20Michael Schumacher out of the car and having a little walk around.
00:11:23He'll take the helmet off.
00:11:24Some drivers tend to like to stay in their cars,
00:11:27but others like to get out and wander around.
00:11:29As we look at the side of the Minardi and a little bit of work,
00:11:32and that's the dry ice being packed all around the electronics.
00:11:34It goes into the air intakes to keep those radiators.
00:11:37The heat soak gets enormous, and it is quite warm now at Manicour.
00:11:42I always wonder, John, about some of this ice and the water dripping out on the track and the poor guy behind.
00:11:47Not that there's many guys behind, of course.
00:11:48The fond mental Minardi's on the grid, but it always worries me.
00:11:51Derek, that's the penalty of being down the grid.
00:11:54You've got to get yourself to the front.
00:11:56But we're going to take a break.
00:11:57But before we do, we're going to have a look at the local press.
00:12:00Alain Prost is featuring heavily.
00:12:02Not one to stop up reasonably.
00:12:03Micah Hackett and Michael Schumacher and Jean Alési.
00:12:06So, join us back here in Manicour after the break.
00:12:13Welcome back to the Mercedes-Benz pre-race show on Fox Sportsnet.
00:12:19Down on the grid, Jean Alési talking to the team.
00:12:21Some of them are journalists.
00:12:22They're going to get that little word, that extra word, to tell why it's going to happen, what's gone wrong.
00:12:28Austrian Grand Prix in two weeks' time.
00:12:29Sunday, July the 16th, 10 a.m. local on Fox Sportsnet.
00:12:35And looking down the grid, Micah Salo.
00:12:37Now, he's going possibly to be at Toyota in 2001 through to 2004 for a rumoured, Derek, US$24 million.
00:12:45Over the four years, let me say.
00:12:47But that's a lot of money as a test driver, isn't it?
00:12:49Well, he's going to be a Grand Prix driver and a test driver.
00:12:52But certainly the smile on Micah Salo's face is one of those smiles that you can understand why.
00:12:56But we're going to have a look at the qualifying that occurred here Saturday.
00:13:00And a very exciting qualifying session it turned out to be.
00:13:03As always, 80-degree day.
00:13:05The track was 90-odd degrees.
00:13:07But it was nonetheless, Jean Alési went out early on.
00:13:10Everybody went out fairly early on in qualifying because of the varying temperatures.
00:13:14Jean Alési was not happy.
00:13:16But Rubens Barrichello, he gets out pretty early on.
00:13:18Sets a good time.
00:13:20And in fact, ultimately, he ended up third on the grid.
00:13:22Eddie Irvine, in my book, well, he was probably the equal star of qualifying.
00:13:26He did a wonderful job to get the Jag in sixth place on the grid.
00:13:31There goes Michael Schumacher, having not done much all weekend.
00:13:33He gets pole on his very first lap by six-tenths of a second.
00:13:37Amazing.
00:13:38David Coulthard, meanwhile, well, he had a lurid time with a litany of problems with his car.
00:13:42He had to take Micah Hakkinen's car out to try and get a time in.
00:13:46Meanwhile, Riccardo Zonta expires the Honda engine.
00:13:50That goes up big time in the BAR.
00:13:52McLaren get David Coulthard's car finally fixed.
00:13:55He gets in his own car, goes out with overzeal in this.
00:13:57He spins it on his first lap out.
00:13:59In fact, he was the quickest of anybody's lap to that point.
00:14:02So it's not to be after this.
00:14:04However, as Ralph Schumacher goes out last, can he get sixth place or even fifth place away from Eddie Irvine?
00:14:10He does.
00:14:11Gets in there with a great fifth place in the Williams.
00:14:14Micah Hakkinen still a little bit lost in some area.
00:14:17He's just not getting it together at the moment.
00:14:19These last few races have been very, very disappointing indeed.
00:14:23Ferrari go out at the end to try and protect their position on the grid.
00:14:26To see whether David Coulthard can go out and get a quicker time.
00:14:29He doesn't go quicker than Michael, but he goes quicker than Barry Keller.
00:14:32Wonderful time from David Coulthard.
00:14:35Let's hear what Michael Schumacher had to say about the track at Manicour.
00:14:40It's not a circuit I'm particularly in love with.
00:14:44Because the nature of the circuit is when it's hot, it's very slippery.
00:14:49In winter time, sometimes we come here testing.
00:14:51It's a great circuit.
00:14:52But in summer, it makes it a bit boring.
00:14:56While Michael Schumacher had the pole, Peter caught up with his brother about his fifth place.
00:15:03Yes, Ferrari and McLaren, but best of the rest.
00:15:05Ralph Schumacher, BMW, Williams F1.
00:15:07Great performance, Ralph.
00:15:08Did you get the maximum from the car?
00:15:09I think we definitely did.
00:15:11I was a bit surprised by the performance of Jaguar today.
00:15:14I mean, it was very quick, especially on Eddie's car.
00:15:17And we managed to get him in the last round, which is very nice for us.
00:15:22This circuit seems to change a lot in ambient conditions, cloud.
00:15:25What's it going to be like in the race if it's different to qualifying?
00:15:29Well, I think for the race, you have the same conditions for everybody.
00:15:32But it's going to be difficult if it stays dry and hot, especially for the tyre wear.
00:15:36But the weather forecast is that we have a dry start and a wet finish like last year.
00:15:41So we'll see how it is.
00:15:43Ralph Schumacher, very confident.
00:15:44And back to full fitness.
00:15:45And back to you.
00:15:48Well, we've heard from an expert.
00:15:49He's in fifth place in the grid.
00:15:50Let's hear from our expert, Derek.
00:15:52What are your thoughts on the factors for this afternoon's Grand Prix?
00:15:55Well, a lot depends, really, on this tyre degradation.
00:15:57The temperature of the track, everybody's mentioning.
00:15:59Will it be two or three pit stops?
00:16:00Basically, I think it'll mainly be two.
00:16:02And this is really down to how they set the cars up, how well balanced they are.
00:16:05And that's why they did so many laps in this little pre-race warm-up just now,
00:16:09to try and just see how the track has changed since warm-up some three hours ago this morning.
00:16:15Well, Giannulli, see that chromium helmet?
00:16:19And Micasello, again, seems to be very popular.
00:16:21But let's get to our email questions section,
00:16:24because we're getting a lot of questions coming in about the 2001 schedule.
00:16:28What changes are going to be in the calendar?
00:16:30Are there going to be many?
00:16:31Or what route changes are we going to see?
00:16:33And first of all, in March, we've now got Malaysia.
00:16:35It was the penultimate race of 2000.
00:16:37It's the second race of 2001.
00:16:39April's got Brazil, San Marino and Spain.
00:16:42Britain's moved to May this year from April.
00:16:44That'll make them happier, I think, back in Britain.
00:16:46Monaco goes back to a May date.
00:16:48June is Canada and the European Grand Prix in the Nürburgring.
00:16:52Then July, we see French Grand Prix and Austrian Grand Prix.
00:16:55And August, it's back to the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim
00:16:58and to the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest.
00:17:01September, we see Belgium, Italy and the second U.S. Grand Prix at Indy.
00:17:06Final Grand Prix of the year at Suzuka in Japan.
00:17:11And now we have some major changes to the technical regulations for next year.
00:17:15You can see them right there, but I think mainly from that page,
00:17:17the most important thing is we get that cockpit further back
00:17:20from the front wheels for driver safety.
00:17:22And then there's some more just coming up.
00:17:25And I think really it's the most important thing here
00:17:27is the larger internal cockpit area,
00:17:29which is already a little bit larger than norm.
00:17:31People like Gerhard Berg and Alexander Wurz
00:17:33to fit in so they can actually turn the steering wheel
00:17:35and shift gear at the same time.
00:17:37Well, I think all those rule changes will help a little bit
00:17:40when we look at the Jordan team as they prepare.
00:17:42But thank you very much for those emails and keep sending them.
00:17:46And here's the address to send them to,
00:17:48formula1 at foxsports.net.
00:17:51Keep them coming.
00:17:53There's Alexander Wurz, as you can see.
00:17:55Alexander Wurz, indeed, yes.
00:17:57The man I was just mentioning, he's such a tall guy,
00:17:59and he's finding it very difficult to drive the car,
00:18:01not doing at all well this year, unfortunately,
00:18:03but it must be very tight in that cockpit.
00:18:05Well, there is the busy scene on the grid.
00:18:07But before we go back, let's have a look
00:18:09at what Derek Bell and Hans-Harald Fensen did
00:18:11in the days leading up to the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:18:13They paid a visit to Indy and drove around the circuit
00:18:16the first time we had a look at the Grand Prix circuit
00:18:19from an on-board car.
00:18:23The Grand Prix of France on foxsports.net
00:18:25is brought to you by Mercedes-Benz,
00:18:27located on the web at mbusa.com,
00:18:32and by Mobile SpeedPass.
00:18:36Well, getting a little look at the beautiful River Loire
00:18:38that flows through this area of Nevers,
00:18:40where the Manicoua circuit is located.
00:18:44And the remaining schedule on foxsports.net
00:18:47for this year's championship,
00:18:48we move in two weeks' time to Austria.
00:18:50That's 10 a.m. local, as is Germany two weeks later.
00:18:53Austria, Hungary and Belgium, all at 10 a.m. local.
00:19:01The Italian Grand Prix, of course, noon local time.
00:19:04Then we go live.
00:19:05Live qualifying also on September the 23rd.
00:19:08That's Saturday, the first Grand Prix
00:19:10in the United States since 1991.
00:19:128th of October is Japan in the final Grand Prix of the year,
00:19:15the Malaysian Grand Prix, 21st of October.
00:19:19Mikko Häkkinen, the man, actually,
00:19:21was quickest this morning in the warm-up
00:19:23and really shows that he hasn't gone to sleep,
00:19:25as a lot of the people, Derek, I think,
00:19:27have been saying about Häkkinen's performance so far this year.
00:19:29Yes, they have been giving him a very hard time,
00:19:31but he seems to need...
00:19:32He's even said himself he needs, you know,
00:19:34having won two world championships,
00:19:35he needs a bit more inspiration,
00:19:36and that's why I feel in some ways
00:19:38he should move to another team,
00:19:39but then I guess that's just my personal feeling.
00:19:41Well, while everybody's waiting on the grid
00:19:43and these moments are ticking away,
00:19:45let's go back to Indianapolis
00:19:47with Heinz-Harald Frenzen and Derek Bell,
00:19:49and they take us round to that lovely Mercedes-Benz E55.
00:19:58Turn one the other way, folks.
00:20:01Turn one with the E55 is 190 km an hour.
00:20:06Yeah.
00:20:07195.
00:20:09Now, coming down here,
00:20:11what do you really think you need across the road here
00:20:14to give you a definition,
00:20:16a depth of focus for overtaking?
00:20:18I mean, you're going to be so fast,
00:20:20and that wall is just so gland, isn't it?
00:20:22That's not going to be easy to focus it.
00:20:27Maybe Bonnie will do some advertisement...
00:20:31Yes, that's right.
00:20:32Yes, no doubt.
00:20:33...on the left,
00:20:34and you can judge it from the advertisement
00:20:36on the left-hand side where the braking point is.
00:20:39That's an easy halt as well for...
00:20:41Yes, true.
00:20:42Sometimes on the track, yeah.
00:20:46But this spot has a nice flow here.
00:20:48Yes, it does.
00:20:49This is pretty fast fourth gear,
00:20:51and you're coming here very fast.
00:20:57And I think this is going to be an overtaking opportunity
00:21:00if somebody has a low downforce package, for example.
00:21:04Yes.
00:21:05He will struggle a bit more here in the infield.
00:21:08It looks wide when he does it.
00:21:10Yes, but I see what you mean.
00:21:12If they do put a wall down there...
00:21:14Try to make it 14 metres consistent.
00:21:17It's going to be quite hard on brakes, or not?
00:21:21Just a couple of places, I suppose.
00:21:23The brakes will be so cool
00:21:24when you get to the end of the straight,
00:21:26and then you're going to hit them really hard
00:21:28there and here, aren't you?
00:21:29Yes, there's two parts.
00:21:30There's one here and the end of the straight.
00:21:32Now, with a low downforce package,
00:21:34as opposed to high downforce,
00:21:36what difference does that make to your braking distances?
00:21:39Do you have any idea?
00:21:41It can make a difference up to 20 metres.
00:21:4520 metres?
00:21:46Yes.
00:21:47If it's from one extreme to the other,
00:21:49it's probably more than, I would say,
00:21:5215 metres, I would say, here.
00:21:56Nearly 1.2 miles from here to the braking zone.
00:22:00So, it's going to be the longest straight here for us.
00:22:03Absolutely.
00:22:04That's what I said when I came last year.
00:22:06It's the longest, you know,
00:22:08out-drag to Mott Hockenheim and everywhere.
00:22:11You don't find there's any drop-off there
00:22:13as you come onto that,
00:22:14and a drop-off as you come out of the exit of town.
00:22:17So, it's going to be the longest straight here for us.
00:22:19Absolutely.
00:22:20That's what I said when I came last year.
00:22:22You don't find there's any drop-off there
00:22:24as you come onto that,
00:22:25and a drop-off as you come out of the exit of Turn 1.
00:22:29No.
00:22:30No.
00:22:31Thank you very much.
00:22:32Yeah.
00:22:35Well, I must just point out
00:22:36that as we actually started that lap,
00:22:39we were coming out of Turn 1 of the Indy track,
00:22:41which is the last turn of the Grand Prix track,
00:22:43and we were doing 110 miles an hour up to 150 at the end,
00:22:46so they're going to be doing 220 miles an hour
00:22:48very, very fast indeed.
00:22:50And his brother, Ralf Schumacher,
00:22:51getting himself ready in the Williams down there
00:22:53in fifth place.
00:22:54Well, interesting, Michael Schumacher,
00:22:56he had that cool towel on the back of his neck,
00:22:58just taking every opportunity to prepare himself
00:23:01for the Grand Prix of France,
00:23:02and that's about to come up very shortly.
00:23:04So, stay with us on Fox Sportsnet
00:23:06for the French Grand Prix.
00:23:16Well, there's the sight.
00:23:17Looking forward into that very first corner
00:23:19of the Grand Courbe,
00:23:21and probably taken flat out, Derek.
00:23:23And that's Rubens Barrichello we're looking at.
00:23:26So, let's have a look and see what kind of weather
00:23:28it has been mixed in forecast.
00:23:30Right now, the track temperature's pretty hot at 80...
00:23:32108 degrees.
00:23:34The ambient temperature's 84.
00:23:36Humidity's been dropping.
00:23:37It's only 48% now.
00:23:38Chance of rain also dropping down to 15%,
00:23:41and just a hint more wind,
00:23:43well, at 4 miles per hour.
00:23:45Michael Schumacher sits pensively directly behind him
00:23:48is his teammate, Rubens Barrichello.
00:23:51As we wait to see what the light sequence
00:23:55as the cars will set off on their final parade lap.
00:23:59So, let's have a look
00:24:01at our Mercedes-Benz starting grid for this,
00:24:03the 50th running of the French Grand Prix.
00:24:05Michael Schumacher, 27th career pole.
00:24:08And David Coulthard, he did a splendid job in the spare car
00:24:11and then had to get in his own to take the lead.
00:24:13Rubens Barrichello fought hard for the front row.
00:24:15He had to be settled with the second row.
00:24:17Mika Hakkinen wasn't showing too good form,
00:24:19but he did very well in warm-up this morning, nonetheless.
00:24:23Then, Ralf Schumacher, 5th quickest in the Williams BMW.
00:24:26Pretty good, I reckon.
00:24:27And Irvine, well, I thought he was the star
00:24:29along with Michael Schumacher of qualifying.
00:24:32Jack Villeneuve may be stung by Jordan
00:24:34getting the engines that he has.
00:24:35He wants to make a point here this weekend in 7th.
00:24:37Yeah, French Grand Prix,
00:24:38the French Grand Prix,
00:24:40he wants to make a point here this weekend in 7th.
00:24:42Yeah, Frentzen was not happy with his position.
00:24:46Truly in the second of the Jordans,
00:24:48still trying to hunt down Frentzen.
00:24:50And Jenson Button still showing great form
00:24:52for a first season in Formula 1.
00:24:55Tony Herbert coming all the way from Goodwood
00:24:57where he entertained the public.
00:24:59Down in 11th place.
00:25:00Mika Salo, well, reasonably happy and content with 12th.
00:25:05De La Rosa in the lead arrows,
00:25:06and I'm disappointed.
00:25:07I thought that might have been further up.
00:25:09Vissi Keller and the whole Benetton team
00:25:10very disappointed after a fine podium finish
00:25:13in Canada two weeks ago.
00:25:16Henri de Nys in the Cyber.
00:25:17Nick Heidfeld in the first of the two Prosts.
00:25:22Alex Vert still under pressure at Benetton.
00:25:24And a disappointed and disappointing Jean Alesi
00:25:26in the second Prost.
00:25:29Riccardo Zonta in the second BAR.
00:25:31Jos Verstappen in the second arrows.
00:25:35And finally in row 11, as ever,
00:25:36Marc Genet in the Menardie.
00:25:38Gaston Massacani in his Menardie.
00:25:42The field's making its way around.
00:25:45And everybody being very cautious indeed
00:25:47as they come down to that very final chicane.
00:25:49And the hairpin bend that leads on to the start-finish line.
00:25:52Michael Schumacher slows the field down.
00:25:57There are the tracks of the French Grand Prix
00:25:59since the 50 years of the French Grand Prix.
00:26:02Le Castellet down in the south of France.
00:26:04Reims, northern France.
00:26:05Manicou, that's where we are.
00:26:07Ten Grand Prix at Manicou.
00:26:08Rouen, in sort of north-western France.
00:26:11Dijon, Pinoy, Clermont-Ferrand.
00:26:13And of course, Le Mans, Derek.
00:26:14Yes, Le Mans, where they had the race at the Bugatti circuit.
00:26:17Not the full circuit that we race on in the sports cars,
00:26:19let me add.
00:26:23Well, let's watch the start as the lights comes on.
00:26:25This is going to be a tense moment.
00:26:26It's going to be Schumacher to try and dive.
00:26:28But let's listen to the start.
00:26:35And a pretty wicked start from Schumacher.
00:26:37He blocked Coulthard, big time,
00:26:39and let Barracuda get second place,
00:26:41Ferraris one and two.
00:26:42Very shrewd move there by Bacchus-Schumacher.
00:26:45Not a good one necessarily technically,
00:26:47but my goodness, it worked.
00:26:51And look, the charge now down the straight,
00:26:53the quickest part of the circuit,
00:26:54190 miles an hour.
00:26:55Ferrari, Ferrari, McLaren, McLaren.
00:26:58Oh, and it looks like Irvine and the Jaguar
00:27:00are trying to get a long shot down the inside.
00:27:02Disappointing start from Irvine.
00:27:03He was sixth in the grid.
00:27:12I'm kind of surprised that Michael Schumacher
00:27:14doesn't get into a little bit more trouble
00:27:15for some of this blocking that he does at the start.
00:27:17Whether he did block David Coulthard,
00:27:19but impression I got was that Coulthard
00:27:20had a magnificent start,
00:27:22but Michael still had that car length in front of him,
00:27:24which, of course, he has the advantage on the grid anyway.
00:27:27But look at him now,
00:27:28and this is going to extend the gap.
00:27:30But look at him now,
00:27:31and this is going to extend like crazy.
00:27:34Another great start coming from Jacques Villeneuve.
00:27:36He's in fifth place.
00:27:37There he is, Jacques Villeneuve.
00:27:39Come all the way up.
00:27:40Starting seventh, Irvine dropped back.
00:27:42The two Jaguars midfield.
00:27:44Is Michael Schumacher doing what he does best?
00:27:46But David Coulthard pushing Barrichello
00:27:48into the chicane heavily.
00:27:49But Salo, what a super start from Salo.
00:27:54Come across the stripe for the first time.
00:27:55Schumacher, Barrichello, Coulthard, Hacken,
00:27:57and Jacques Villeneuve.
00:28:00And then it's Ralf Schumacher.
00:28:06The field beginning to space out quite a lot already.
00:28:10Schumacher just pulls away from...
00:28:12Look at Ruben Barrichello.
00:28:14Must be a second and a half, two seconds.
00:28:16This is the second lap.
00:28:18David Coulthard disappointed at that front-row grid position.
00:28:21Derek, he didn't get any use of it.
00:28:22Oh, dear.
00:28:23David's nearly running up the back of the Ferrari there.
00:28:26But Ruben still gets it as he comes out.
00:28:29Gets his line right.
00:28:30David, of course, goes in maybe just a tad too fast.
00:28:33David's going to be very upset with this
00:28:35because we saw it in Canada.
00:28:36David would have had such a great race
00:28:38against Michael Schumacher had he not been penalized.
00:28:41And here we probably have...
00:28:42Oops.
00:28:43It's a little bit sideways there.
00:28:45That was Ralf Schumacher.
00:28:46Just a little bit heavy on the brakes.
00:28:48And he's got Jarno Trulli all over the back of him.
00:28:50And that might give Trulli an opportunity to sneak ahead.
00:28:53This is through the Imola corners.
00:28:59Derek, you know, just looking,
00:29:00I mean, watching Micah Hacken in fourth place,
00:29:02even though it's only the second lap of this 72-lap race,
00:29:06it just looks as if Micah's sitting there.
00:29:08There's no momentum.
00:29:09There's no energy coming from him whatsoever.
00:29:11No, he has lost...
00:29:12Seems to have lost a lot of momentum.
00:29:14However, one has to say,
00:29:16to drive any of these cars at the pace they're doing
00:29:18is outstanding.
00:29:19But he has lost some bit of fire somewhere along the line.
00:29:22Well, McLaren have never had a success at Manicou.
00:29:24In fact, they haven't won a French Grand Prix, I think, since 89.
00:29:27But Micah Hacken in that fourth place,
00:29:29being led by his teammate, David Coulthard.
00:29:31And you can see the difference.
00:29:32I mean, just visually,
00:29:33Coulthard looks like he's got the car by the scruff of the neck.
00:29:36And he's almost sort of putting the magnets
00:29:38on the back of Rubens Barrichello's Ferrari,
00:29:40this time a little bit further away from the back of the Ferrari,
00:29:43not running or overrunning
00:29:45as they were in the Adelaide hairpin bends.
00:29:48He needs to get that acceleration.
00:29:49Needs that neat drive out.
00:29:51He needs that to sort of really keep behind that Ferrari.
00:29:54Of course, the thing is,
00:29:55let's watch this.
00:29:56Jordan has a little look down.
00:29:58Oh, what a good piece of driving there by Trulli.
00:30:01He got the job done.
00:30:02Trulli gets past Ralf Schumacher,
00:30:03but Schumacher's going to come back again.
00:30:05He had the better exit,
00:30:06and he's probably got a little bit more momentum, Derek.
00:30:08Yes, absolutely.
00:30:09This is what happens a lot,
00:30:11and this is when sometimes
00:30:12somebody has to make an absurd move down the inside.
00:30:14They actually lose that correct line.
00:30:17And of course, the correct line here is all important
00:30:19for getting that bite and traction,
00:30:21because that's where the rubber is, the grip.
00:30:23The whole question of grip here
00:30:24has been the topic of the weekend.
00:30:26Track temperatures affect it very, very greatly indeed.
00:30:28Everybody's on the super soft tyre.
00:30:30Nobody's bothered with the slightly harder tyre.
00:30:37Well, we're riding there with Rubens Barrichello
00:30:39for a short, brief moment out of turn
00:30:41at the last turn into the ground curb.
00:30:43Let's watch him.
00:30:45130 mile an hour through there in fourth gear.
00:30:53180 miles an hour.
00:30:55Look at the lead Michael Schumacher already pulled out.
00:30:57It's two and a half seconds,
00:30:58and that's a pretty big lead at this early start of the race,
00:31:01but most fast laps in this Formula 1 career.
00:31:04But Michael Schumacher's taken the lead with 42.
00:31:06Alain Prost, of course, retired as a team owner, 41.
00:31:09And Nigel Mansell, who's playing golf these days,
00:31:11with 30.
00:31:18In fact, that gap between Schumacher and Barrichello
00:31:21is opening up literally now by the corner,
00:31:24while the rest of the field,
00:31:25which is led by Barrichello, Coulthard in third,
00:31:28Hackett in fourth,
00:31:29Jack Villeneuve's a fine fifth place with Villeneuve.
00:31:32He's really staying pretty much stationed.
00:31:35Ralph Schumacher managed to get the lead
00:31:38Yes, the real curve.
00:31:39As they go to the final chicane,
00:31:41coming into the last corner before the pits,
00:31:43first gear corner.
00:31:45Ralph Schumacher all over the kerbs,
00:31:47really trying very hard to keep Trulli at bay,
00:31:50but also wants to get in terms with his fellow German
00:31:53Heinz-Harald Frentz and the Jordans,
00:31:55who are in the lead.
00:31:56And he's got the lead.
00:31:57He's got the lead.
00:31:58He's got the lead.
00:31:59He's got the lead.
00:32:00He's got the lead.
00:32:01He's got the lead.
00:32:02He's got the lead.
00:32:03He's got the lead.
00:32:04He's got the lead.
00:32:05He's got the lead.
00:32:06The Frentz and the Jordan looking pretty easy at the minute,
00:32:09where Ralph Schumacher looks to be pushing extremely hard,
00:32:12and there's Williams BMW.
00:32:18Further down the field,
00:32:19Pedro de la Rosa in the arrows,
00:32:2013th for Lazy,
00:32:21up to 14th in the grass,
00:32:22Fisichella disappointing Benetton.
00:32:24They've been disappointing all weekend.
00:32:26Heidfeld, Verstappen and Sontag.
00:32:28Diniz, Wurz and the second of the Benettons,
00:32:30and then finally,
00:32:31and that must be terrible for Wurz,
00:32:33to be just ahead of those two Menardis,
00:32:35without sports having to do.
00:32:38Michael Schumacher again,
00:32:39keeps knocking those fast laps in.
00:32:42Look at Ralph,
00:32:43little Ralph Schumacher there,
00:32:45after four laps is the field.
00:32:48We'll be back here in Manicours in a moment.
00:32:54Welcome back to the Grand Prix of France from Manicours,
00:32:57and our top five is unchanged.
00:32:59It's still Michael Schumacher leading,
00:33:01and his teammate Rubens Varichello,
00:33:03David Coulthard third,
00:33:04Mika Hakkinen fourth,
00:33:06Jack Villeneuve,
00:33:07still in fifth place.
00:33:11Ralph Schumacher muscling that Williams run,
00:33:13now closer to the back of Fenson.
00:33:16Fenson getting a bit of a hurry up from the German.
00:33:20I'm sure the pits,
00:33:21the Jordan pits were saying much the same thing,
00:33:23Derek.
00:33:24And the Williams doesn't seem to be using as much road,
00:33:26as the Jordan does,
00:33:27I have to admit,
00:33:28through the corners,
00:33:29and you think Ralph would have a lot more turbulence,
00:33:31and less stability right behind the Jordan.
00:33:33Couldn't get the grip,
00:33:34but he looks very, very good at it,
00:33:36looks very sort of confident.
00:33:39Three and a half seconds,
00:33:403.6 seconds,
00:33:41but let's look at that start,
00:33:42that was controversial.
00:33:43Schumacher was very aggressive at the start.
00:33:46All five lights are on,
00:33:47when they go out,
00:33:48then it's go.
00:33:49Schumacher goes right to left,
00:33:51and really pushes Coulthard,
00:33:52Coulthard's got to back out,
00:33:53and that allows Rubens Varichello through.
00:33:56Well, it might have been a plan, of course,
00:33:58that Ferrari had to allow Varichello through,
00:34:00but it certainly,
00:34:01I thought it was pretty damn unfair on David Coulthard.
00:34:07The fields stream out of that long,
00:34:09astral corner of Jack Filner,
00:34:11brilliant start from seventh up to fifth.
00:34:14He's been drawn along, in effect,
00:34:16although he's dropped back from the tail of Hakkinen,
00:34:18but he's in sort of free air of his own,
00:34:20he hasn't got Frentzen close to him,
00:34:23and he's sort of running comfortably in fifth place.
00:34:27I'm sure nobody's really concerned about it,
00:34:28but you'll notice there are no cigarettes
00:34:30or tobacco markings on any of the cars.
00:34:32Ferrari's running completely white,
00:34:33where they normally have Marlborough,
00:34:35and, of course, you see the drivers' names
00:34:37on the McLarens, where you'd normally see West.
00:34:41This is because of very severe tobacco limitations in France,
00:34:44of all places, where they seem to smoke and drink
00:34:46more than anywhere else in the world.
00:34:47In fact, talk about the drinking,
00:34:49there's no alcohol advertising in the cars either,
00:34:51except in the case of the BRR,
00:34:53who have got a non-alcoholic beer,
00:34:55so they can run that.
00:34:56But it's one of those things that's,
00:34:57France have got these very strict laws,
00:34:59that go into a restaurant and try and look
00:35:01for the no-smoking zone, it's out in the street.
00:35:05It's rather amusing, too,
00:35:06because, obviously, the Lucky Strike
00:35:08have a red roundel on their car,
00:35:10and they were told,
00:35:11well, you mustn't remove your roundel,
00:35:13because it refers to Lucky Strike.
00:35:14They said, no, it doesn't refer to our cut-engine manufacturer,
00:35:17Honda, Japanese for the rising sun.
00:35:19And they've been allowed to get away with that one,
00:35:21and, well, that's the fine line of interpretation.
00:35:26This battle for second place still,
00:35:28David Coulthard can't really get to terms
00:35:30with Rubens Barrichello,
00:35:31and maybe just,
00:35:33as you see, David Coulthard,
00:35:34who's had a very good season to date,
00:35:36he's had two wins,
00:35:37one second place, one third place,
00:35:39and leads his team-mate by those two points.
00:35:42Coulthard's really taken the momentum and initiative
00:35:44away from the really favoured driver
00:35:47in the McLaren team,
00:35:48and I don't know what's going on.
00:35:52You wanted me to say something about that,
00:35:53don't you, Tom?
00:35:54I think, Derek, I mean,
00:35:56you give us your views, because you...
00:35:58No, I feel very strongly, too.
00:35:59I don't think David's had the upper hand at all at McLaren.
00:36:02I think it's wonderful to see him getting in there
00:36:04with this inspired driving he's had of late.
00:36:07As we watch, I think, Fizzi Kelleher working over
00:36:12the back of the...
00:36:15John Alese, in fact, yes, battling away.
00:36:18A very disappointing race for Alese.
00:36:20He's all...
00:36:21Well, he's got up to 14th, still maintaining it,
00:36:23that battle between Fizzi Kelleher and himself.
00:36:26You know, they're working hard.
00:36:27They're going to work harder in reality
00:36:28than the cars at the front of the field are doing.
00:36:31Again, a long line of cars,
00:36:33all bunched up,
00:36:35nobody able to get close enough
00:36:36to make that little dive.
00:36:38And here's where we saw Schumacher,
00:36:39Ralph Schumacher, that is,
00:36:40try to get past Trulli.
00:36:42And...
00:36:45These cars back here just don't seem to work,
00:36:47and there's this great aggravation
00:36:49in the Prost team versus Peugeot.
00:36:51He's saying that, in some of the newspapers,
00:36:53that, you know, he's never known
00:36:55an engine manufacturer
00:36:56to take so little interest
00:36:58in what the team is actually doing.
00:37:00Peugeot, very upbeat,
00:37:01and saying they're going to go somewhere
00:37:02very good next year.
00:37:03But I don't know if any team necessarily
00:37:04would necessarily want it.
00:37:06They need a real partnership.
00:37:08Teams need partnerships.
00:37:09The actual engine package
00:37:10has been sold to a Japanese consortium,
00:37:13and that will be supported by Peugeot.
00:37:17That battle, Ralph Schumacher and Frenson,
00:37:19can't get any closer than that.
00:37:21But that package may well be the package
00:37:22that Prost has got to use 2001.
00:37:25He certainly would like to move on,
00:37:27but there's no obvious engine supplier
00:37:29currently in the marketplace for him,
00:37:31with the exception of the Mugen Honda engine,
00:37:34the engine currently in the Jordan
00:37:35we're looking at,
00:37:37behind Tyrell Frenson and Jarno Trulli.
00:37:39That engine is being freed up,
00:37:40but what the politics will be within Honda
00:37:43now that Honda are going to support
00:37:44two official teams,
00:37:45well, we'll have to wait and see in that one.
00:37:48In fact, the Jordan team
00:37:49had a stunning year last year.
00:37:50They finished up third
00:37:51in the Manufacturers' Championship.
00:37:53At this point in the season,
00:37:54they'd scored 31 points.
00:37:57This year, 10 points.
00:37:59And, of course, they won this race one year ago
00:38:01in appalling conditions.
00:38:03Torrential rain and very clever strategy
00:38:06in the pits and a superb drive
00:38:08by Heinz and Frenson
00:38:09saw Jordan take the first of their two wins
00:38:12in the 99th season.
00:38:17The future of Formula One
00:38:19with the Williams team
00:38:20looking very bright indeed.
00:38:23We're hearing conflicting stories, Derek,
00:38:25about the future of Jenson Button.
00:38:27Initially, this weekend,
00:38:28it said that Button's position
00:38:30was looking stronger in the team.
00:38:32And then today,
00:38:33the stories are sort of suggesting
00:38:36that maybe Montoya might be free.
00:38:38In other words,
00:38:39he wouldn't be coming back
00:38:40to Formula One this year.
00:38:41And, of course,
00:38:42we're hearing conflicting stories
00:38:44about the future of Jenson Button.
00:38:46In other words,
00:38:47he wouldn't be taking part
00:38:48in his third year
00:38:49with the Ganassi team in kart racing.
00:38:50So, very confused picture
00:38:51at Williams in that respect.
00:38:52I think it depends
00:38:53just the way you look at it.
00:38:54In my opinion,
00:38:55Chip Ganassi, I know,
00:38:56has another year's contract,
00:38:58I believe, with Montoya
00:39:00to stay in champ cars.
00:39:01But, of course,
00:39:02if Montoya wants to go to Formula One,
00:39:06it's no good keeping a driver
00:39:07on that really wants to leave.
00:39:09And I'm sure Chip is a human enough person
00:39:11to accept that.
00:39:12And he knows he can,
00:39:13with his wonderful team,
00:39:14could get the pick of the bunch
00:39:15for a fine driver
00:39:16for next year
00:39:17to replace Montoya.
00:39:18I think another factor
00:39:19that's very important to consider
00:39:20is the longer Montoya stays
00:39:22with the champ cars,
00:39:23Formula One and champ cars
00:39:25are going in different directions.
00:39:26The regulations in Formula One,
00:39:28particularly in relation to tyres,
00:39:30make these cars very unpleasant,
00:39:32twitchy, nervy cars to drive.
00:39:34In contrast,
00:39:35I think the champ cars
00:39:36are a little bit more flexible,
00:39:38a little bit more forgiving.
00:39:40Get Montoya out
00:39:41as soon as possible.
00:39:42That would be my advice.
00:39:46Karl Schumacher, 58 starts
00:39:48in his sort of young career,
00:39:50best finish,
00:39:51second, Belgium, 98,
00:39:53and last year in Monza,
00:39:54the Italian Grand Prix.
00:39:58Battle continuing,
00:39:59second and third place,
00:40:00David Coulthard,
00:40:02third place.
00:40:04I don't know how long
00:40:05Coulthard feels he can afford
00:40:06to sit behind the Ferrari
00:40:08and let Michael Schumacher
00:40:09go off into the distance.
00:40:11And if Derek Schumacher
00:40:12should win this race,
00:40:13he would actually win
00:40:1441 Grand Prixs,
00:40:16which would equal
00:40:17the 41 wins
00:40:18of the late, great
00:40:19Ayrton Senna.
00:40:21Yes, it also makes me wonder
00:40:23why, as you said,
00:40:25Mika Hakkinen isn't doing
00:40:26a little bit more about
00:40:27working David over.
00:40:29You'd think you'd be
00:40:30chiving him along a bit,
00:40:31and he's quite,
00:40:32seems relatively happy
00:40:33to drop back
00:40:34something like two seconds
00:40:35from David Coulthard.
00:40:36Maybe he feels
00:40:37he can pull it in
00:40:38whenever he wants to,
00:40:39but two seconds in Formula One
00:40:40is a long way.
00:40:41Also, David is not giving
00:40:42Barry Keller the hard time
00:40:43I anticipated he would.
00:40:45Having said that,
00:40:46I did mention earlier
00:40:47that the turbulence
00:40:48means that they can't
00:40:49get round that long turn
00:40:50to really capitalise
00:40:52on this long straight,
00:40:53so they can't slipstream
00:40:54the way they'd like to.
00:40:55And supposedly,
00:40:56some of these regulations
00:40:57for next year will come in
00:40:58to improve that,
00:40:59but we'll see.
00:41:00Well, the only thing
00:41:01that Ferrari may have taken
00:41:02a chance with
00:41:03in Barry Keller's car
00:41:04is they may have thought
00:41:05about running
00:41:06a little bit less wing
00:41:07just to give him the advantage
00:41:08on the straight,
00:41:09and therefore
00:41:10make it more difficult
00:41:11for the two McLarens
00:41:12who were alongside
00:41:13and behind
00:41:14on the grid
00:41:15to take advantage.
00:41:16And they also might be
00:41:17considering
00:41:18a three-lap strategy,
00:41:19which I would find
00:41:20difficult to believe,
00:41:21but they may well
00:41:22have thought of that
00:41:23as being a way to do it.
00:41:24One of the Benettons
00:41:25down.
00:41:26I saw them,
00:41:27let's see,
00:41:28Gasaba, in fact,
00:41:29down.
00:41:30After that,
00:41:31they'd have them
00:41:32try to smoke
00:41:33make it difficult.
00:41:34You'll see
00:41:35Jean Alesi,
00:41:36we believe,
00:41:37in the crossed.
00:41:38In the field.
00:41:40Re-gathering,
00:41:41there it is.
00:41:42Oh!
00:41:43You can see why.
00:41:44It's that he got touched.
00:41:45So that was
00:41:46teammate Heidfeld,
00:41:47I think it was the one
00:41:48that did the touching.
00:41:49The two crossed
00:41:50coming together
00:41:51and then suddenly
00:41:52a cloud of smoke
00:41:53for the Arrows
00:41:54and Zonta
00:41:55in the second
00:41:56with the VARs.
00:42:01So as we have a look
00:42:02at the midfield
00:42:03after 11 laps
00:42:04of this French Grand Prix,
00:42:05we'll be back
00:42:06at Manucor
00:42:07in a moment.
00:42:12Welcome back
00:42:13to the French Grand Prix
00:42:14from the garage
00:42:15of Scuderia Ferrari.
00:42:16I'm by a set
00:42:17of Barrichello
00:42:18Bridgestone tyres here.
00:42:19Interesting to note
00:42:20that two days ago
00:42:21on Friday,
00:42:22Barrichello
00:42:23limited the number
00:42:24of laps he did
00:42:25on the circuit
00:42:26to only six.
00:42:27That was to conserve
00:42:28sets of tyres
00:42:29for the race.
00:42:30Back to you.
00:42:31Well,
00:42:32he may well need them too.
00:42:33I mean,
00:42:34the fresher the tyres
00:42:35get,
00:42:36the quicker they can go
00:42:37and it's right now
00:42:38where he's obviously
00:42:39pushing those tyres
00:42:40to the limit
00:42:41to keep David Coulthard
00:42:42behind him.
00:42:43Yes, he is.
00:42:44And there's that battle
00:42:45that we've seen
00:42:46pretty much from the start
00:42:47of the race.
00:42:48Heinz Hauer-Frenzen
00:42:49currently in 6th place.
00:42:50Ralf Schumacher,
00:42:517th.
00:42:52Jarno Trulli in 8th.
00:42:53Now,
00:42:54that top 8
00:42:55have basically remained
00:42:56unchanged.
00:42:57But up to 9th place
00:42:58is Jensen Button
00:42:59and 10th place,
00:43:00the first of the Saubers
00:43:01of Micasalo.
00:43:02We saw a good start
00:43:03from Eddie Irvine,
00:43:04a disappointment
00:43:05for the Jaguar team
00:43:06after a very strong qualifying.
00:43:08Here are the top 6.
00:43:11It's Michael Schumacher,
00:43:12Rubens Barrichello,
00:43:14David Coulthard,
00:43:15Mikko Häkkinen,
00:43:16Heinz Hauer-Frenzen
00:43:17in 6th.
00:43:18Jack Villeneuve
00:43:19still on his own
00:43:20in 5th place.
00:43:21Well,
00:43:22you just mentioned
00:43:23Eddie Irvine.
00:43:24Now,
00:43:25Jaguar is setting up
00:43:26in the pits.
00:43:27So,
00:43:28maybe Eddie's got a problem
00:43:29in coming in.
00:43:30They do seem to qualify
00:43:31from time to time
00:43:32exceptionally well.
00:43:33I do have to remember
00:43:34that at the beginning
00:43:35of the season,
00:43:36we were told
00:43:37that there wasn't
00:43:38a single component
00:43:39on that Jaguar
00:43:40that was carried over
00:43:41from the Stuart
00:43:42from last year.
00:43:43Maybe they should have
00:43:44carried all the components
00:43:45over and had a
00:43:46damn slight better car.
00:43:47I think that's certainly
00:43:48an opinion
00:43:49that would be one
00:43:50that I'm interested
00:43:51in to follow.
00:43:52But thinking about pit stops,
00:43:53most teams,
00:43:54we believe,
00:43:55are going to go
00:43:56for the two-stop strategy.
00:43:57A three-stop is possible,
00:43:58but two stops
00:43:59we would expect
00:44:00to occur somewhere
00:44:01around laps 26 to 28.
00:44:02The second stop
00:44:03is somewhere
00:44:04around 48 to 50.
00:44:05So,
00:44:06we have a little bit
00:44:07of way to go yet.
00:44:08This is the real battle
00:44:09of Ralf Schumacher
00:44:10running behind
00:44:11Heinz Howard Frentzen
00:44:12in that seventh place.
00:44:13Frentzen the last
00:44:14of the point scorers
00:44:15currently.
00:44:16He's coming through
00:44:17that quick flip-flop.
00:44:18An interesting thought,
00:44:19Derek,
00:44:20from Eddie Jordan.
00:44:21He's saying,
00:44:22you know,
00:44:23Formula One
00:44:24needs to get
00:44:25a bit of a kick
00:44:26in the pants.
00:44:27Well,
00:44:28he's been getting
00:44:29a kick
00:44:30in the pants
00:44:31and he may
00:44:32well have to
00:44:33eat those words
00:44:34or perform.
00:44:35Well,
00:44:36exactly.
00:44:37Well,
00:44:38I think
00:44:39he will perform
00:44:40and it makes you wonder
00:44:41because we understand
00:44:42when Bill Nerve
00:44:43heard that Honda
00:44:44were going to be
00:44:45supporting the
00:44:46Jordan team,
00:44:47he was on the phone
00:44:48to Eddie saying,
00:44:49hey,
00:44:50what about me?
00:44:51And I tell you what,
00:44:52he's not a bad bet
00:44:53for Eddie.
00:44:54He's the sort
00:44:55of driver
00:44:56Eddie would adore
00:44:57and it's the sort
00:44:58of opportunity
00:44:59in my book
00:45:00to go and raid
00:45:01the piggy bank
00:45:02to pay Jacques Villeneuve.
00:45:03He don't come cheap
00:45:04and that was going
00:45:05to be the choice
00:45:06for Bill Nerve,
00:45:07I think.
00:45:08He might get some help
00:45:09from Honda.
00:45:10Interesting thought.
00:45:11Quite an interesting thought,
00:45:12yeah.
00:45:13He knows the engine,
00:45:14he's worked with them
00:45:15all this year
00:45:16and they know
00:45:17the strengths
00:45:18of Jacques Villeneuve
00:45:19and he is
00:45:20outstandingly fast.
00:45:21We look over
00:45:22John Tot's shoulder
00:45:23at all the screens.
00:45:24He can plug in,
00:45:25as you know,
00:45:26to any of the screens
00:45:27around the circuit
00:45:28and any of the in-car
00:45:29cameras to see
00:45:30what's happening
00:45:31to his cars.
00:45:32Just interesting there
00:45:33in the happen band,
00:45:34different lines
00:45:35from Coulthard
00:45:36to Barrichello.
00:45:37We heard
00:45:38Coulthard likes
00:45:39a sort of
00:45:40lightly softer line
00:45:41than we saw Barrichello.
00:45:42We noticed it in qualifying
00:45:43yesterday as well,
00:45:44didn't we?
00:45:45It was interesting
00:45:46to see that he did
00:45:47take that different line
00:45:48at times.
00:45:49Not a pretty sight
00:45:50but that's John Tot
00:45:51working out the strategy
00:45:52and looking at the screens
00:45:53and thinking about
00:45:54what he's going to do
00:45:55and as we mentioned
00:45:56looking at strategies
00:45:57the Prost team
00:45:58are already beginning
00:45:59to prepare
00:46:00putting the tyres,
00:46:01getting them
00:46:02certainly available.
00:46:03They can't put them
00:46:04out until
00:46:05they've actually
00:46:06told the driver
00:46:07or advised the driver
00:46:08that they're ready for him.
00:46:09We saw that happen
00:46:10in Canada
00:46:11when it went to rain
00:46:12and Barrichello
00:46:13arrived in the pits
00:46:14and found the pits,
00:46:15the Ferrari pits,
00:46:16empty
00:46:17for just service
00:46:18Michael Schumacher.
00:46:19So on lap 18
00:46:20the Prost team
00:46:21and that would sort of
00:46:22fit into the kind
00:46:23of three-stop strategy
00:46:24that we might have seen
00:46:25so if the Prost team
00:46:26are go
00:46:27and there's a
00:46:28is that
00:46:29it is
00:46:30B.A.R.
00:46:31Yep
00:46:32it is indeed
00:46:33and that looks like
00:46:34it's gone off
00:46:35fairly heavily
00:46:36Ricardo Zonta
00:46:37so we have to think
00:46:38about Prost
00:46:39how can you do
00:46:40a three-pit stop
00:46:41in a race
00:46:42when you're so far
00:46:43down the field?
00:46:44Now obviously
00:46:45I would suggest
00:46:46John
00:46:47that they were so worried
00:46:48about tyre degradation
00:46:49that there's no way
00:46:50they knew they could go
00:46:51half distance
00:46:52with a heavier tank of fuel
00:46:53I'm sure that must be it
00:46:54because the car
00:46:55is not well-balanced enough
00:46:56and we said this
00:46:57at the beginning
00:46:58that the well-balanced cars
00:46:59are the ones that can do
00:47:00the two stops
00:47:01Well that means
00:47:02Alain Prost
00:47:03is going to have
00:47:04no fingernails left
00:47:05by the time
00:47:06this season finishes
00:47:07he never had very many
00:47:08really
00:47:09and what a disappointment
00:47:10for him
00:47:11and for Jean Valese
00:47:12and for of course
00:47:13the French crowd
00:47:14the home crowd
00:47:15on a particularly busy
00:47:16sports weekend
00:47:17in France
00:47:18with the final
00:47:19of the Euro 2000
00:47:20football match
00:47:21France versus Italy
00:47:22later on this evening
00:47:23in this world-famous
00:47:24one month long
00:47:25bicycle race
00:47:26the Tour de France
00:47:27that started
00:47:28Saturday
00:47:29in France
00:47:30That was a very
00:47:31very good shot
00:47:32of the pit exit there
00:47:33which there's been
00:47:34a certain amount
00:47:35of controversy
00:47:36because the cars
00:47:37as they line up
00:47:38to go into the Grand Cours
00:47:39they have to come
00:47:40across the pit exit
00:47:41and the cars are flying
00:47:42out of there
00:47:43at very high speed
00:47:44and the drivers
00:47:45have been very concerned
00:47:46about it
00:47:47Yeah in fact
00:47:48they had to ban
00:47:49drivers during practice
00:47:50starts and qualifying
00:47:51because they were
00:47:52destroying laps
00:47:53for people on the
00:47:54qualifying run
00:47:55so they banned that
00:47:56in the race of course
00:47:57the pit lane is open
00:47:58you just take your chances
00:47:59be you on the race track
00:48:00or coming out of the pits
00:48:01there may be a blue flag
00:48:02there to warn you
00:48:03of oncoming traffic
00:48:04but it's not mandatory
00:48:05to stop
00:48:06You did mention
00:48:07Jean Todt just now
00:48:08and has to say
00:48:09that he's done
00:48:10a tremendous job
00:48:11as we hear that
00:48:12Johnny Herbert's gone in
00:48:13for Jaguar for a pit stop
00:48:14but they've done
00:48:15a tremendous job
00:48:16Jean Todt has been there
00:48:17seven years
00:48:18it seems amazing
00:48:19he's been there so long
00:48:20Yes it's actually
00:48:21the first time
00:48:22when he joined Ferrari
00:48:23and he was brought in
00:48:24to really
00:48:25get that team
00:48:26restructured
00:48:27as we look
00:48:28Jean Alési
00:48:29for Prost
00:48:30and it's a slow
00:48:31slow pit stop duel
00:48:32the clock stopped
00:48:3311.2
00:48:34and Alési
00:48:35will not be
00:48:36a very happy man
00:48:37even more unhappy
00:48:38than we've seen him
00:48:39Well he might have
00:48:40flat spotted his tyres
00:48:41John in that spin
00:48:42which might have
00:48:43necessitated him going in
00:48:44because you don't need
00:48:45any imbalance at all
00:48:46look at Ralfs
00:48:47coming up inside
00:48:48Heinz Harald
00:48:49You see Ralf can do it
00:48:50in the slow corners
00:48:51but in those fast corners
00:48:52the grand curb
00:48:53on an Estoril
00:48:54he can't get close enough
00:48:55due to the turbulence
00:48:56because he gets
00:48:57the low grip
00:48:58at the front of his car
00:48:59so he can't make
00:49:00the most of it
00:49:01on the straight
00:49:02but here he's
00:49:03right close behind him
00:49:04Fairly evenly matched
00:49:05with a bit of give and take
00:49:06around the circuit
00:49:07but
00:49:08Ralf Schumacher
00:49:09is tenacious
00:49:10he is a Schumacher
00:49:11after all
00:49:12and
00:49:13there's another German
00:49:14driver ahead of him
00:49:15Derek
00:49:16do you think
00:49:17there's a few
00:49:18little
00:49:19arrows pointing forwards
00:49:20little bit of needle there
00:49:21I think
00:49:22see look how he drops
00:49:23back through that
00:49:24he just cannot
00:49:25stay that close
00:49:26because of the turbulence
00:49:27plus you know
00:49:28he's just degrading
00:49:29his front tyres
00:49:34Ralf Schumacher
00:49:35pretty much now
00:49:36recovered
00:49:37as we look at
00:49:38Nick Heidfeld
00:49:39diving in
00:49:40for the past team
00:49:44Chris Ingell is in
00:49:45as well
00:49:46I have to say John
00:49:47just Ralf Schumacher
00:49:48he got that nasty injury
00:49:49back in the Monaco Grand Prix
00:49:51and they have a problem
00:49:52with this car
00:49:53oh there's
00:49:54look at Ella's face
00:49:55exasperation
00:49:56disappointment
00:49:57just what have I got to do
00:49:58he wants to go away
00:49:59and hide frankly
00:50:00I bet he wished
00:50:01he'd never bothered
00:50:02to think about
00:50:03Formula 1 team management
00:50:04but I think he saw
00:50:05Jackie Stewart
00:50:06doing such an inspired job
00:50:07and thought this
00:50:08is really what I'd like to do
00:50:09I mean he is
00:50:10totally in love with
00:50:11Formula 1
00:50:12but
00:50:13now look at Ralf
00:50:14just all over the back
00:50:15of that Jordan
00:50:16one of the younger
00:50:17of the two Germans
00:50:18who was actually
00:50:1925 today
00:50:20or even yesterday
00:50:21yes Friday he was 25
00:50:22and
00:50:23you know
00:50:24long future ahead
00:50:25and Harold Fenton
00:50:26also in the news
00:50:27and the prospect
00:50:28of him leaving now
00:50:29the Jordan team
00:50:30with that new Honda
00:50:31factory deal
00:50:32I would think
00:50:33is pretty much
00:50:34gone
00:50:35I think the options
00:50:36that he had
00:50:37Jaguar
00:50:38which is one in particular
00:50:39Jaguar keen to get
00:50:40a German driver
00:50:41in their team
00:50:42I think that one's
00:50:43going to be forgotten
00:50:46The other bit of the news
00:50:47is where
00:50:48Dario Franchitti
00:50:49is actually going to have
00:50:50a test drive with Jaguar
00:50:51in the next couple of weeks
00:50:52I'm not so sure
00:50:53that he should really go there
00:50:54I think he'd be better
00:50:55off staying just where he is
00:50:57Well I think the same thing
00:50:58applies to Franchitti
00:50:59if he wants to be
00:51:00a Grand Prix driver
00:51:01and I'm certain he does
00:51:02at some point in his career
00:51:03he's got to get out of
00:51:04champ cars
00:51:05as quick as possible
00:51:06and
00:51:07it may not be the best
00:51:08team in the world
00:51:09right now
00:51:10but believe me
00:51:11with the Ford Motor Company
00:51:12behind Jaguar
00:51:13you've got to believe
00:51:14they've got the budget
00:51:15to make that thing work
00:51:16It might take
00:51:17two or three years
00:51:18that Franchitti
00:51:19wants to be a part of
00:51:20but well
00:51:21it's a longer term project
00:51:27Ooh
00:51:28and just here
00:51:29the way Virch came out
00:51:30when we were talking
00:51:31about that pit lane exit
00:51:32that was close
00:51:33So we look at the leaders
00:51:34Barrichello second
00:51:35Kulthar third
00:51:36Mika Hägglund fourth
00:51:39We're going to take a break
00:51:40We'll be back when we call
00:51:41in a moment
00:51:46Welcome back to Manukau
00:51:47David Kulthar
00:51:48has just taken
00:51:49second place
00:51:50away from Rubens Barrichello
00:51:51Put him maybe
00:51:52a little bit asleep
00:51:53down at the Happenband
00:51:54Derek
00:51:55Yes well I think
00:51:56Rubens must have had
00:51:57a bit of a moment
00:51:58in the long
00:51:59long right hander
00:52:00leading on to it
00:52:01through the Estoril curve
00:52:02and David came right
00:52:03down inside him
00:52:04Oh
00:52:05the Herbert's
00:52:06out of the race
00:52:07That's the Jag
00:52:08out of the way
00:52:09I'm afraid to say
00:52:10Another DNF for them
00:52:11But David Kulthar
00:52:12now has a bit
00:52:13between his teeth
00:52:14Now what will
00:52:15Mika Hägglund do
00:52:16Is he going to
00:52:17respond to this
00:52:18Or is it maybe
00:52:19that Barrichello's
00:52:20having a little problem
00:52:21with his tyres
00:52:22He was working them
00:52:23very hard
00:52:24But David Kulthar
00:52:25goes by in a very
00:52:26very impressive manner
00:52:27Well once he's got
00:52:28the McLaren
00:52:29ahead of the Ferrari
00:52:30he seems to be able
00:52:31to pull away
00:52:32quite comfortably
00:52:33Michael Schumacher
00:52:34leads 7.2 seconds
00:52:35after 22 laps
00:52:36Barrichello
00:52:37back to third place
00:52:38Hägglund now
00:52:39Maybe that's the
00:52:40wake up call
00:52:41that we need
00:52:42But look at the
00:52:43back markers
00:52:44of the Minardis
00:52:45And that'll give
00:52:46Hägglund
00:52:47the run
00:52:48Hopefully
00:52:49He's now got
00:52:50caught behind the
00:52:51Minardi as well
00:52:52Hägglund probably
00:52:53hoped that the
00:52:54Minardi would pull over
00:52:55And it hasn't
00:52:56And he's had to
00:52:57go up the inside
00:52:58Jack Villeneuve
00:52:59dives into the pits
00:53:00also
00:53:01So on lap 23
00:53:02We'll see the
00:53:03first and remaining
00:53:04of the VAR
00:53:05hand us in
00:53:06Button
00:53:07Jensen
00:53:08Button up to
00:53:09sixth place
00:53:10That's very good
00:53:11from tenth on the grid
00:53:12That's Ralph
00:53:13in the pits
00:53:14He stalls it
00:53:15Does he know?
00:53:16He manages to
00:53:17get a gear
00:53:18These cars of course
00:53:19got anti-stall devices
00:53:20on them
00:53:21And I think that one
00:53:22might have saved
00:53:23Ralph
00:53:24He pulled the clutch
00:53:25got the revs back up
00:53:26and got the car
00:53:27underway
00:53:28But here's the
00:53:29young man
00:53:30First season of racing
00:53:31He's actually
00:53:32raced here
00:53:33many times
00:53:34in Formula 3
00:53:35So he felt
00:53:36relatively comfortable
00:53:37He suddenly
00:53:38discovered a
00:53:39Formula 3 car
00:53:40and a Formula 1 car
00:53:41But of course
00:53:42he's only been racing
00:53:43three years
00:53:44so
00:53:45it's quite
00:53:46everything he does
00:53:47is certainly
00:53:48a steep learning curve
00:53:51Race leader
00:53:52Michael Schumacher
00:53:53Coulthard pulling in
00:53:54on him
00:53:55pulled four tenths
00:53:56on that lap
00:53:58Happening in the pits
00:54:01Not a bad time
00:54:02to bring him in
00:54:04There we see
00:54:05the reigning
00:54:06world champion
00:54:07in the pits
00:54:08And it doesn't
00:54:09look well
00:54:11The time says it
00:54:12but it looks so
00:54:13it almost looks like
00:54:14a slow motion
00:54:15that my climbing team
00:54:16so well practiced
00:54:17at this pit stop
00:54:18Yeah
00:54:19Quite an early stop
00:54:20if he's on a
00:54:21two-stop strategy
00:54:22But he's right
00:54:23if he's on a three-stop
00:54:25Jenson Button
00:54:26who momentarily
00:54:27found himself
00:54:28up in sixth place
00:54:29He's now come in
00:54:30for his service
00:54:31the first of the afternoon
00:54:32and we're going to
00:54:33see at least
00:54:34one more
00:54:35This is lap
00:54:3624
00:54:37And the young
00:54:3820-year-old
00:54:39gets back
00:54:40onto the track
00:54:41I tell you
00:54:42they're going to be
00:54:43jolly nearly
00:54:44on three-lap
00:54:45on three-stop strategies
00:54:46It's a 72-lap race
00:54:47and they're coming
00:54:48on lap 22 to 24
00:54:49That's quite a battle
00:54:51They're going to have
00:54:52to stop three times
00:54:53I'll tell you
00:54:54The three-stop strategy
00:54:55will come in
00:54:56on laps 19 to 22
00:54:57on lap 19 to 22
00:54:59Yeah
00:55:00They're just on
00:55:01the outside envelope
00:55:02of that three-stop strategy
00:55:03And Ferrari
00:55:04are preparing
00:55:05So
00:55:06who will it be?
00:55:08It is
00:55:09the race leader
00:55:10Michael Schumacher
00:55:11He's having
00:55:12one of those
00:55:13perfect Ferrari pit stops
00:55:14that we've seen
00:55:15on many occasions
00:55:21Woo-hoo
00:55:22Give it some revs, Michael
00:55:23Out he goes
00:55:24And that was
00:55:25a relatively short stop
00:55:26He didn't take
00:55:27a great deal of fuel
00:55:28on board
00:55:29And I think
00:55:30that reason is
00:55:31to just extend
00:55:32when he gets back out
00:55:33to give him performance
00:55:35Which will be
00:55:36with the weight
00:55:37and also
00:55:38with the rubber
00:55:41Eighth
00:55:42Career Grand Prix
00:55:43Three-time winner
00:55:44Ninety-four in Benetton
00:55:45Ninety-seven and ninety-eight
00:55:46of course
00:55:47with the Ferrari team
00:55:49And Ferrari's won
00:55:50the French Grand Prix
00:55:51no less than eleven times
00:55:52while Lotus and Williams
00:55:53have won it seven
00:55:54But apparently
00:55:55Walev just won it four
00:55:56And as you mentioned earlier
00:55:57the last was in 89
00:55:58a long time ago
00:56:00David Coulthard
00:56:01assumes the lead
00:56:02having gotten past
00:56:03Ruben Barrichello
00:56:04a lap or so ago
00:56:06But Coulthard
00:56:072.1 seconds ahead
00:56:09of second-place Ferrari
00:56:12Coulthard comes up
00:56:13through the Imola
00:56:14So let's look back
00:56:15And I mean
00:56:16it's a strange thing
00:56:17I don't
00:56:18He got a fantastic run
00:56:19and Barrichello
00:56:20had to go one way
00:56:21then the other
00:56:22But certainly, Derek
00:56:23out of the corner
00:56:24Well, absolutely magnificent
00:56:25Like he had another
00:56:26fifty horsepower
00:56:27But I think it was
00:56:28that Barrichello
00:56:29was so confused
00:56:30going in there
00:56:31trying to look in his mirrors
00:56:32to see what was happening
00:56:33He actually completely
00:56:34got the wrong line
00:56:35going in
00:56:36So we've had
00:56:37this is the second
00:56:38of the McLaren's
00:56:39race leader
00:56:40into the pits
00:56:41McElhin came in
00:56:42a couple of laps earlier
00:56:44And at the same time
00:56:45the Ferrari team
00:56:46are getting prepared
00:56:47for Rubens
00:56:48Oh, short stop again
00:56:50Yeah, he'll have
00:56:51gained some time
00:56:52on Michael Schumacher
00:56:53Penn's watch Schumacher
00:56:54There's Rubens Barrichello
00:56:55coming behind him
00:56:56Coming out behind him
00:56:57Pretty close to good
00:56:58A very good stop
00:56:59for Ruben
00:57:006.6
00:57:01That does make a difference
00:57:02The key is the outlap
00:57:03Schumacher we know
00:57:04was blinding
00:57:05Those outlaps
00:57:07Let's see
00:57:08Let's make a Hakkinen
00:57:10Who is
00:57:11we think
00:57:12our race leader
00:57:13as the computer
00:57:15updates the situation
00:57:16Hakkinen of course
00:57:18made his stop
00:57:24Oh, he didn't quite
00:57:25get in tight there
00:57:30So Schumacher
00:57:31Hakkinen, Barrichello
00:57:33As we get a little
00:57:34closer
00:57:35we can see
00:57:36the dive
00:57:37down the inside
00:57:38the two-jawed
00:57:39wooden drivers
00:57:40Oh dear
00:57:41That was a very
00:57:42upsetting little piece there
00:57:43I think
00:57:44for Heinz Auerfrenzen
00:57:45As we see
00:57:46one of the
00:57:47cross goes flying
00:57:48across the grass
00:57:49Oh dear
00:57:50So you don't want to
00:57:51come back on
00:57:52and nail the other car
00:57:53going through the corner
00:57:54beside you
00:57:55No, and drag a whole bag
00:57:56full of gravel
00:57:57onto the track
00:57:58as well as
00:57:59Michael Schumacher
00:58:00now settles in
00:58:02Schumacher of course
00:58:03Right at the
00:58:04start-finish line
00:58:05Oh sorry
00:58:06at the end of the pit lane
00:58:07not the start-finish line
00:58:08Here's the start-finish line
00:58:09right here
00:58:12As they come across the line
00:58:14Michael Schumacher
00:58:165.3 seconds
00:58:18ahead of David Kruisthard
00:58:20Further one and a half seconds
00:58:21ahead of Hakkinen
00:58:22Rubens Barrichello
00:58:23the loser on that
00:58:24altogether
00:58:25He was second
00:58:26then he went to third
00:58:27now down to fourth place
00:58:29Long, long gap
00:58:31So we wait for fifth
00:58:32come across
00:58:33We should assume
00:58:34that's still going to be
00:58:35Jacques Villeneuve
00:58:37It's Pedro de la Rosa
00:58:38that was pulled up
00:58:39by the end of the pit
00:58:40the pit road there
00:58:41against the wall
00:58:43And then Jano Trulli
00:58:44in sixth place
00:58:48So let's look at the
00:58:49pit-stop times
00:58:50Michael Schumacher
00:58:518.8
00:58:52Hakkinen 7.5
00:58:53Kruisthard 7.3
00:58:54Barrichello 6.6
00:58:55Now that's strange
00:58:56Barrichello had the
00:58:57quickest stop
00:58:58but he lost out
00:58:59Now whether that's
00:59:00Derek down to
00:59:01laps or
00:59:02I have a stink feeling
00:59:03looking at the traffic
00:59:04that was around
00:59:05when Rubens came out
00:59:06I think he was held up
00:59:07a little bit or
00:59:08was thwarted a little bit
00:59:09by the traffic
00:59:10as he came out
00:59:12The two Jordans
00:59:13and the two Williams
00:59:14running now
00:59:15seventh
00:59:16eighth
00:59:17ninth
00:59:18and tenth
00:59:22Jano Trulli
00:59:23he did really muscle
00:59:24his way past his teammate
00:59:25I think Fenton
00:59:26a little bit
00:59:27unhappy with that one
00:59:28I would be too
00:59:29I think it's a
00:59:30necessary move
00:59:31but we're seeing Trulli
00:59:32now starting to
00:59:33stretch his
00:59:34stretch that gap out
00:59:35I'm surprised that
00:59:36Ralph dropped back
00:59:37that bit
00:59:38and the Jenson button
00:59:39got so close
00:59:40because Jenson was
00:59:41quite a way behind
00:59:42but he did have some
00:59:43very good clear laps
00:59:44before his fuel stop
00:59:45Well Trulli
00:59:46certainly galloping away
00:59:47from his teammate
00:59:48one would think
00:59:49maybe that
00:59:50I think Jordan
00:59:51have been altering
00:59:52their strategies
00:59:53between the two cars
00:59:54to give Trulli
00:59:55for some reason
00:59:56a shorter fuel load
00:59:57to try and get position
00:59:58Well you know
00:59:59I've run my
01:00:00took my cars
01:00:01different just
01:00:02for varying conditions
01:00:03you never know
01:00:04what had happened
01:00:05of course the drivers
01:00:06do have their own
01:00:07personal feelings
01:00:08about set up
01:00:09particularly for this circuit
01:00:11Well Fenton
01:00:13just got Ralph Schumacher
01:00:14who's had a very
01:00:15much behind him
01:00:16all weekend
01:00:17This should be
01:00:18a very interesting lesson
01:00:19for Jenson Button
01:00:20sitting there
01:00:21so relatively close
01:00:22behind Ralph Schumacher
01:00:23his teammate
01:00:24who obviously
01:00:25will be staying
01:00:26along the team
01:00:27next year
01:00:29From what I've heard
01:00:30from the Williams team
01:00:31what they're looking for
01:00:32in the second driver
01:00:33in the team
01:00:34is a driver
01:00:35that really gives Ralph
01:00:36a very very
01:00:37tough time indeed
01:00:38and while Button
01:00:39has done a great job
01:00:40for the team
01:00:41they don't think
01:00:42that he's really given
01:00:43Ralph the workout
01:00:44that the team want
01:00:45they want these two drivers
01:00:46in each other's throats
01:00:47basically
01:00:48But at the same time
01:00:49everybody knew
01:00:50that Button wasn't
01:00:51going to be able
01:00:52to set the world alight
01:00:53the poor kid's only 19
01:00:54when he joined the team
01:00:55and he's only done
01:00:56three seasons of racing
01:00:57and he's not going
01:00:58to go in there
01:00:59and wind up
01:01:00Ralph Schumacher
01:01:01he knew the deal
01:01:02when he joined the team
01:01:03Frank's a tough guy
01:01:04Derek
01:01:05and you know
01:01:06he's got no sympathy
01:01:07he says
01:01:08I give you the equipment
01:01:09I want you to perform
01:01:10and if he feels
01:01:11the drivers are underperforming
01:01:12that's tough
01:01:13Now Pence makes his way
01:01:14down the hill
01:01:15down to Duquesne
01:01:16Join us here
01:01:17on Fox Sportsnet
01:01:18for the French Grand Prix
01:01:19we'll be back
01:01:20in a moment
01:01:23Welcome back
01:01:24to the Grand Prix of France
01:01:25here at Manucure
01:01:26David Coulthard
01:01:27there you see the gap
01:01:28it's down to just
01:01:29under two seconds
01:01:30Coulthard has been eating
01:01:31well one and a half seconds
01:01:32he's been eating
01:01:33into Michael Schumacher's lead
01:01:34suddenly Derek
01:01:35they've got a real
01:01:36Grand Prix in their hands
01:01:37and it's a Grand Prix
01:01:38for the lead
01:01:39a very inspired
01:01:40David Coulthard
01:01:41who was blamed
01:01:42for never overtaking
01:01:43now he's overtaking
01:01:44never making an impression
01:01:45on other cars
01:01:46he's doing an outstanding job
01:01:47not being phased out at all
01:01:48by Michael Schumacher
01:01:49look at him
01:01:50gobbling up the back
01:01:51he's within a second now
01:01:52and once you've got sight
01:01:531.3 seconds
01:01:54as they come across
01:01:55the line
01:01:56Coulthard
01:01:57fired up
01:01:58and giving this
01:01:59while Michael Schumacher
01:02:00had galloped into the lead
01:02:01now Coulthard
01:02:02having got clear
01:02:03of Barrichello
01:02:04after the first round
01:02:05of pit stops
01:02:06charging
01:02:07look
01:02:08McLaren
01:02:09absolutely on the edge
01:02:19Schumacher down
01:02:20into the Adelaide
01:02:21hairpin bend
01:02:22there you see
01:02:23that it was less
01:02:24than a second
01:02:25David
01:02:26took three quarters
01:02:27of a second
01:02:28on that lap
01:02:29but his braking
01:02:30is outstanding
01:02:31into the Adelaide hairpin
01:02:32one has to admit
01:02:33you saw him
01:02:34time and time again
01:02:35eating right in the back
01:02:36of Barrichello's car earlier
01:02:37the brakes on that McLaren
01:02:38are outstanding
01:02:39we saw those pit stop times
01:02:40Michael Schumacher
01:02:41had a reasonable
01:02:428.8 seconds
01:02:43Coulthard
01:02:447.3
01:02:45now that relates to
01:02:46I think
01:02:47the amount of fuel
01:02:48that went into
01:02:49the respective cars
01:02:50it shouldn't make
01:02:51that much difference
01:02:52surely
01:02:53but I believe
01:02:54Michael's taken
01:02:55that much fuel on
01:02:56but we are not there
01:02:57to judge
01:02:58he has
01:02:59Ross Brawn
01:03:00one of the greatest
01:03:01tactician
01:03:02race tactician
01:03:03out there
01:03:04as his team
01:03:05tactician
01:03:06team director
01:03:07I'm sure
01:03:08he's doing the right
01:03:09things for him
01:03:10but look at
01:03:11David
01:03:12all over the back
01:03:13and there's traffic
01:03:14ahead
01:03:15and it's going to
01:03:16happen to Michael
01:03:17as he comes
01:03:18into the fast
01:03:19corners
01:03:20Lacour
01:03:21and Estoril
01:03:22he's going to
01:03:23have a hard time
01:03:24getting around
01:03:25this next
01:03:26long right hander
01:03:27but he might be
01:03:28able to get close
01:03:29enough to get a run
01:03:30as they get down
01:03:31into that Adelaide
01:03:32hairpin
01:03:33well it's his brakes
01:03:34that do
01:03:35are a major
01:03:36strong point
01:03:37Schumacher's
01:03:38got traffic
01:03:39ahead of him
01:03:40but he's going to
01:03:41try and do
01:03:42Derek
01:03:43surely his position
01:03:44himself
01:03:45but look at
01:03:46Coulthard
01:03:47traffic moves
01:03:48to the left
01:03:49lets the leaders
01:03:50go through
01:03:51Coulthard
01:03:52came up there
01:03:53look at him
01:03:54right alongside
01:03:55Mika Hakkinen
01:03:56not far behind
01:03:57either but Rubens
01:03:58Barrichello
01:03:59is certainly
01:04:00looking as the
01:04:01second driver
01:04:02in the Ferrari
01:04:03team at the
01:04:04moment
01:04:05suddenly
01:04:06from what
01:04:07we've seen
01:04:08in testing
01:04:09McLaren
01:04:10were quickest
01:04:11in testing
01:04:12over a week
01:04:13ago
01:04:14here in
01:04:15France
01:04:16they were
01:04:17quickest this
01:04:18morning
01:04:19in the warm
01:04:21very very
01:04:22quick entry
01:04:23not too heavy
01:04:24an impact
01:04:25on the tyre
01:04:26barriers
01:04:27those barriers
01:04:28of course were
01:04:29tested by
01:04:30Verstappen
01:04:31in that test
01:04:32he had a
01:04:33massive
01:04:34something in
01:04:35the car
01:04:36failed
01:04:37Michael
01:04:38hasn't had
01:04:39this around
01:04:40him for
01:04:41some time
01:04:42this is
01:04:43really what
01:04:44we thought
01:04:45we would
01:04:46have seen
01:04:47in Canada
01:04:48if David
01:04:49had not
01:04:50been able
01:04:51to get
01:04:52the front of
01:04:53the car
01:04:54in
01:04:55just coming
01:04:56through
01:04:57just watch
01:04:58the brakes
01:04:59Michael
01:05:00right down
01:05:01the inside
01:05:02David
01:05:03look at
01:05:04him come
01:05:05up under
01:05:06braking
01:05:07look at
01:05:08the brakes
01:05:09on that
01:05:10McLaren
01:05:11unbelievable
01:05:12going to
01:05:13touch
01:05:14and let
01:05:15Hakkinen
01:05:16go through
01:05:17no that
01:05:18just to
01:05:19keep David
01:05:20in check
01:05:21and Hakkinen
01:05:22has caught them
01:05:23both up
01:05:24because Michael
01:05:25is running
01:05:26slow laps
01:05:27relative to
01:05:28the two McLarens
01:05:29look at
01:05:30both the
01:05:31McLarens
01:05:32behind now
01:05:33and there's
01:05:34still a long
01:05:35way to go
01:05:36only a third
01:05:37of the way
01:05:38through the race
01:05:39or just over
01:05:40we're not
01:05:41half way
01:05:42anyway
01:05:43Schumacher's
01:05:44hands now
01:05:45not filled
01:05:46with one
01:05:47he's
01:05:48trying to
01:05:49make it
01:05:50tight
01:05:51here's
01:05:52another shot
01:05:53David
01:05:54knew he was
01:05:55going to
01:05:56touch
01:05:57Michael's
01:05:58front tyre
01:05:59he's a little
01:06:00bit upset
01:06:01with the
01:06:02situation
01:06:03I wonder
01:06:04will we see
01:06:05that in the
01:06:06post race

01:06:08explain
01:06:09I thought

01:06:24regulations
01:06:25he uses
01:06:26the rules
01:06:27he understands
01:06:28them
01:06:29better than
01:06:30anybody else
01:06:31out there
01:06:32Michael had
01:06:33every right
01:06:34to go
01:06:35around
01:06:36that corner
01:06:37on the
01:06:38inside
01:06:39David
01:06:40was the
01:06:41one
01:06:42making it
01:06:43tight
01:06:44in the

01:49:24receives the winner's trophy from the Prime Minister of France Lionel Jospin and it is
01:49:30a delighted David Coulthard you can see the smile the body language David's waited a long
01:49:35time to be in a position in the McLaren Mercedes-Benz team where he can actually win
01:49:41and Adrian Newey from the team the aerodynamicist the technical director of McLaren
01:49:47receives the winner's constructors trophy Micka Hakkinen receives his second place from Madame
01:49:53Buffet the Minister for Sport in France and Micka doesn't look really all that unhappy about
01:49:58finishing second and that's something fairly new I think for all of us to have to deal with
01:50:03Rubens Barrichello well it was a sort of a drive to the finish and Michael Schumacher's
01:50:08retirement of course maybe that signaled that Rubens Barrichello was also maybe going to be
01:50:13required to just back off we didn't want to see two Ferraris retiring but now it's this champagne
01:50:19spray it's mum champagne Coulthard runs off stage so he's going to give it to the team the mechanics
01:50:25and David he's never afraid to take a good mouthful a good swig and there's his own little
01:50:32version of the Fountain of Trevi and straighten the eyes from Rubens Barrichello nothing worse than
01:50:38neat champagne and eyes that have been sweaty and
01:50:42strained over two hours of grumpy racing Hakkinen nice dueling champagne
01:50:46so David Coulthard celebrates on his cool down lap the driver's press conference will be coming
01:50:56up in a moment on Fox Sportsnet stay with us and listen to what they have to say welcome back to
01:51:02Manukau and let's go to the press room immediately to hear from a jubilant David Coulthard Micka
01:51:06Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello welcome to the top three finishes in the 2000 French Grand Prix
01:51:12David Coulthard Micka Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello David despite an event eventful start
01:51:18which saw you get stuck behind Rubens so smooth so aggressive so fast was there ever a moment in
01:51:24that race that you thought you weren't going to win yeah just after the start when I dropped down
01:51:30to third place uh it's one thing believing you have a quick car it's another thing finding a
01:51:35way past and I have to say initially I had a lot of understeer and Rubens was actually quicker
01:51:40but once the car sort of settled down then I was able to sort of play to the strengths that I had
01:51:45which I was very good on the brakes we ran quite low wing to be good at the end of the straight
01:51:50to give me the opportunity to get in the inside and from there I just felt that I always knew that
01:51:57I had the chance to overtake and it was just a question of weighing up the risk and you know I
01:52:02have to say that in the end both Rubens and Michael were very fair hard but fair and it was a good race
01:52:09tell us a bit more about that first attempt when you tried to overtake Michael at the Adelaide
01:52:12hairpin you seemed a bit unhappy about it well I have to apologize for my hand gestures that's not
01:52:18at all in keeping with the sport but as you can understand probably my emotions are running high
01:52:24I know to be in a battle in a position to battle for the championship I needed to win here today
01:52:30and that's what I'm trying to get done and I felt that I had a clean run on Michael on the outside
01:52:35and equally I felt he drove me wide now you know you could say well he has the right to do that
01:52:41because he has the track position but I think a deliberate gesture in driving someone wide that's
01:52:46not his normal line made me very angry which is why I gave the unsporting gesture but
01:52:55there's there's children watching so I shouldn't be I shouldn't be showing it again
01:52:59but ultimately I was able to get the inside later and although I expected him to close the door
01:53:05again he he realized I was alongside far enough and how about strategy in this race was it pre-set
01:53:10or did you change mid-race we had flexibility and we did adjust it slightly to try and read
01:53:16where we were with traffic and and how the car was running and we had an idea as to what the
01:53:20pace would be before the pit stop and what the pace would be after the pit stop we also made
01:53:24an adjustment to the car for the balance and the car was much better after the stop so to to all of
01:53:31my guys who've had an incredible weekend hard work to all the mechanics to my engineers and to everyone
01:53:37who helps me to pit wall I have to say this this race was as much about them as it was about me
01:53:41making the maneuver so a great effort from the team David many congratulations Micah that seemed
01:53:46to be quite an uneventful race for you but but were you happy with the car yes and no I mean
01:53:54I wish I would have been one second quicker than anybody else so there is always there is always
01:54:01a little bit unhappiness with the car you're never 100 100 pleased but the reality is we
01:54:07were the quickest cars on the track so I cannot complain too much you got past Michael with 12
01:54:14laps to go did you try and push David towards the end or were you told to just ease off a little by
01:54:20the team no because after immediately when I when I saw Michael going off well he had a problem
01:54:25whatever I realized David was so far away and I thought you know everything what happened you
01:54:34know you know what happened in the start example and the way the race started I thought hold on
01:54:38second we are first and second here and I think this is the fabulous situation for the team
01:54:44and it's no point to start now pushing like mad out there and to risk
01:54:52myself a risky car and the risk of points but we are able to get this race so I decided to
01:54:59just look how far the Rubens is running and and and driving that space that way he cannot catch
01:55:07great many congratulations thank you thank you Rubens you got ahead of David at the start but
01:55:12seemed to drop away from Michael quite quickly did you have a problem with your car no not at
01:55:17all I mean it was just settling on the race and making it easy a little bit for Michael and
01:55:25basically I thought at the beginning I could handle it quite well David behind me but then
01:55:32after I don't know 10-15 laps the tires were starting to give up a little bit and his car
01:55:39was quite quite fast and quite fast on the straight as well so then he was quite difficult
01:55:44because I was he put a lot of pressure on the braking and I was in difficulties on the braking
01:55:52and then he overtook me on the exit of the corner two slow pit stops as well can you talk us through
01:55:58those well I mean the first one was just a slow pit stop the second one was a problem on the right
01:56:03on the front right well that's dropped me back 10 seconds from from them because I heard that
01:56:12Mika had a so-so pit stop as well so I could eventually had pass him again and but today
01:56:20we were not the happiest ones on the pit stop following Michael's retirement were you told by
01:56:26the pit wall to slow down to preserve your engine gearbox yes yes they told me Michael had a failure
01:56:31on the engine and because I had 35 seconds for Jacques they told me to back off well done Rubens
01:56:40thanks David we go to Austria now you're six points ahead of Mika 12 points behind Michael
01:56:47how has this race changed the world championship in your opinion well it's put us right back where
01:56:52we were after Monaco and what I have to make sure obviously in Austria that close the gap further
01:56:58and it's it's doable obviously we've benefited a little bit from Michael not finishing today but
01:57:04I'm glad that we were able to pass him on the track and show our pace and pretty confident
01:57:09going to Austria thanks David and now a word from Mika and Rubens in your own languages well there's
01:57:14the celebration Mika Hackett and David Coulthard totally delighted but is David Coulthard creating
01:57:18his own chances in this year's championship
