An Opposition MP is questioning whether private labs will be accredited to test for dengue as he says those results should be included with those from CARPHA.

Meanwhile, an Oppositon Senator says if the U-N-C is returned to office in the next General Election, it will bring back the old Land and Building Tax.

The statements were made during the Opposition's media conference today.

00:00If it is that the profile and the epidemiologic profile of persons who are dying from dengue
00:05has changed over the years, and the front population is now at risk, the population
00:11needs to know this.
00:12And this, again, is where the public education is important.
00:16So as the editorial in today's Express concludes, analyzing all these factors, mortality, infection
00:23patterns, attitudes, is crucial to controlling the impact of dengue.
00:28Vice-President, Dr. Lakram Budo, speaking during the opposition UNC's media conference
00:33on Sunday.
00:34On Thursday, August 8th, the health ministry said there are just over 660 laboratory-confirmed
00:41cases of dengue fever and six laboratory-confirmed deaths.
00:46Is there underreporting of cases?
00:47This is very important.
00:48Statistics are very important if we are to manage a crisis.
00:53We are being told that the confirmed case figures only include cases confirmed by CAFA.
00:58While this is important, it is also important that the cases that are confirmed by other
01:05sources need to be included.
01:08So the question really is, will the private labs be accredited to test for confirmed cases?
01:13And while Dr. Budo focused on a major health issue, leader of opposition business in the
01:18Senate, Wade Mark, focused on what the opposition considers to be a challenge to the financial
01:24health of homeowners.
01:27Once we are returned to office with your support, we give you the undertaking this morning that
01:34we shall repeal that dreaded draconian property tax and have it replaced by another law, which
01:46is the Old Land and Building Act of Trinidad and Tobago.
01:51Senator Mark reiterated the UNC's calls to the government to put a stop to its plans
01:55for the property tax.
