00:00:00The formula one world championship is in Germany for round ten and three questions loom large.
00:00:07Can McLaren recover from last week's lap one crash?
00:00:12Will team orders be in place this week?
00:00:17Can last week's winner, Eddie Irvine, keep his and Ferrari's title hopes on the track?
00:00:25And can Heinz-Harold Frentzen turn a fine performance in qualifying for Jordan into
00:00:30a spot at the top of the podium in his home Grand Prix?
00:00:55Welcome to fox sports net coverage of FIA formula one world championship racing.
00:01:03Today round ten in the world championship, the Grand Prix of Germany at Hockenheim.
00:01:07Hello, everyone.
00:01:08I'm Mike Joy alongside five-time Le Mans winner Derrick Bell and in the pit lane from the
00:01:14London Sunday times and F1 racing magazine, Peter Windsor.
00:01:18Welcome to our Toyota pre-race at this beautiful scenic circuit as the drivers are out on their
00:01:23reconnaissance laps.
00:01:25Eddie Irvine shook up the championship chase last week with his victory in Austria.
00:01:30He's now just two points behind Mika Hockenheim, Michael Schumacher out of action with a broken
00:01:34leg.
00:01:35Heinz-Harold Frentzen gained some ground and David Coulthard and Ralph Schumacher.
00:01:39The constructors championship did not change last week.
00:01:43Ferrari and McLaren Mercedes each got ten points.
00:01:46Ten points for Irvine's win, a six and a four for second and third for McLaren.
00:01:51Jordan a distant third.
00:01:53Let's have a look back at last week's race, Derrick.
00:01:56Last week, of course, we're at this wonderful circuit in Austria.
00:01:59First time without Michael Schumacher for some time.
00:02:01A lot of fans were there.
00:02:02We're still waving the flags in support, but it was Mika Salo that stood in for Michael
00:02:06Schumacher and a lot of pressure that was on him, too, in his first Grand Prix in a
00:02:10Ferrari.
00:02:11Hoping we're going to see a great result from him soon.
00:02:13Nevertheless, it was the two McLarens that went off into the lead, as you can see from
00:02:16the shot here, but in turn two, David Coulthard went for a spot there and Mika Hockenheim
00:02:21tried getting in the room and that was it.
00:02:23This, of course, caused havoc down the field and it was Mika Salo in his first Grand Prix
00:02:27runs into the back of Johnny Herbert and, of course, knocks his wing off.
00:02:31That wasn't very good for him.
00:02:33Nevertheless, a wonderful drive by our man here, Mika Hockenheim, storming through the
00:02:38field.
00:02:39One of the best drives of his career, but really it was down to the pit stops.
00:02:41Eddie Irvine has a better stop than David Coulthard and here he comes out of the pit
00:02:45in front of David Coulthard, but Eddie goes through to win a Grand Prix.
00:02:50It's here from the top three finishers in the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:02:55I'm surprised they've beaten them yet, but at the same time, I knew we weren't a second
00:02:58off them yesterday and I knew we would be closer.
00:03:00You know, I reckon really yesterday we were about half a second off and today, normally
00:03:05in a race, we go better and I thought, you know, if we get the strategy right, we can
00:03:09do the job.
00:03:10Obviously, I'm very sorry for running into Mika, but I misjudged that corner and then
00:03:19the rest of the race was just a case, I guess, of Eddie being quicker on those last few laps
00:03:24after the start.
00:03:26Whatever happens in the first corner, well, second corner, that's not now important at
00:03:32the moment in this situation.
00:03:34As reconnaissance laps continue, look at David Hill, who will start eighth today for Jordan.
00:03:40His teammate, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, is on the outside pole.
00:03:43Well, a lot of email, Derek, about how Eddie Irvine was able to make up those 12 seconds
00:03:48as David Coulthard pitted in, coincidentally, as our timing and scoring feed took a dump
00:03:54for about 10 or 12 laps there.
00:03:55Yes, it's fairly easy to understand afterwards, but in fact, Eddie had been biding his time
00:04:01on the brakes and on the tires, team rules, and he worked his way back into a great, great
00:04:05frenzy towards the end when the other two pitted in front of him, allowing himself actually
00:04:09to get sort of nearly lap two seconds of that quicker than David Coulthard.
00:04:12He had a quicker pit stop than David Coulthard.
00:04:14He went out and still did quicker laps and, of course, was in front.
00:04:18And David was balked one lap, two and a half seconds, by Alex Zanardi, going very slow
00:04:23right in the middle of the track in front of him and just didn't turn as good a lap
00:04:27in that segment, not immediately apparent at the time.
00:04:30Well, it's only been one week since the last race, but there's lots of news to catch up
00:04:34on.
00:04:35Peter?
00:04:36One week between these two races means that most of the teams have trucked their cars
00:04:40straight to Hockenheim, rebuilt them here, and rebuilt them, of course, into what is
00:04:44effectively super speedway spec.
00:04:46This is Europe's equivalent of a super speedway.
00:04:48Very fast out the back, very tight infield section, so an interesting aerodynamic compromise
00:04:52there.
00:04:53Nice new rear wing on the Ferrari.
00:04:54In fact, a lot of new aerodynamic bits on most of the cars.
00:04:57Jarno Trulli is still in the news.
00:04:59He's got that very strange contractual situation with Benetton whereby he's supposed to drive
00:05:03for them from 2001 onwards, but at the moment his management team is talking to Rocco Benetton,
00:05:08the chief of Benetton, to see if they can extend that to 2002.
00:05:11In other words, he wouldn't start there until 2002, and that would free him up to sign a
00:05:15two-year deal with Jordan.
00:05:17That is the rumour at the moment.
00:05:18Jarno Trulli to partner Heinz-Harald Frentzen for two years at the Benton & Hedges Jordan
00:05:23team.
00:05:24Bernard Eccleson is back looking tanned and fit from his holiday in the Adriatic, recovering
00:05:27still from his operation, of course, expressing some interesting opinions.
00:05:31He doesn't believe that gravel traps are the way to go in the future for run-off areas.
00:05:34He'd like to see tarmac instead of gravel traps, and he doesn't actually believe in
00:05:38the grooved narrow tyres, would you believe?
00:05:40He actually wants to see a return to wide, slick tyres.
00:05:44Now, whether that's actually what's going to happen, or whether that's a bit of political
00:05:48interplay between Bernard Eccleson and Max Mosley remains to be seen.
00:05:52Back to you.
00:05:53Right.
00:05:54Politics, engineering and talent, they're all very important in Formula 1.
00:05:58The man of the hour is Mika Salo.
00:06:00He is the stand-in for Michael Schumacher, and earlier, Peter caught up with Mika about
00:06:05driving for Ferrari.
00:06:06Mika, race two, you must be getting more familiar with things.
00:06:09How does it feel?
00:06:10Yeah, it definitely feels better than the first one.
00:06:12I had a little bit of time to think about things, and also I'm more familiar with the
00:06:16car at the moment, so I don't have to start from zero like last weekend.
00:06:22What is a Ferrari like to drive?
00:06:23It's amazing, yeah, I just can't stop smiling.
00:06:27It's really, really good.
00:06:28The team is so nice, and they've been really helpful for me, and the actual car is not
00:06:34that huge difference what everybody would imagine in a power and everything, it's just
00:06:38everything works.
00:06:39Well, as Mika said, it is so very, very special just to sit there with that prancing horse
00:06:44in the middle of the steering wheel in front of you, you know you're a very special driver.
00:06:47It applies to the road cars as well.
00:06:50That is pretty neat, and you saw the big smile on Mika Salo's face.
00:06:53There is the man of the hour in his home Grand Prix, Heitz-Harald Frentzen, who starts from
00:06:57the front row today for Eddie Jordan.
00:07:00We'll review qualifying when we come back to Hockenheim.
00:07:05Prior to the British Grand Prix, a Tommy Hilfiger photo shoot produced these images of Michael
00:07:10Schumacher and Eddie Irvine, you'll probably see in a local store soon.
00:07:20Welcome back to our Toyota pre-race coverage for the Grand Prix of Germany.
00:07:23Hockenheim is a beautiful circuit, Derek, reminds me a lot of Elkhart Lake Road America
00:07:27in Wisconsin, a thunder valley, the long tree line straightaway there, but this is a fast
00:07:33race track.
00:07:34Well, it is a very, very fast track.
00:07:35As you can see, it has three chicanes in it.
00:07:37They were put in some 15 years ago to slow the cars down because of the excessive high
00:07:41speeds.
00:07:424.2 miles.
00:07:43Let's go around it with Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:07:46He's going past the pits up to 185 miles an hour as he goes into the north curve.
00:07:52Be very careful coming out of there.
00:07:54Always inclined to go in a little bit too fast, which can catch you out, and it leads
00:07:57you down on its first straightaway to the Jim Clark chicane.
00:08:03He's up to 220 miles an hour in 7th gear, a really high-speed circuit, something the
00:08:07drivers love to drive on.
00:08:10Severe braking as he comes down the chicane, down to 2nd gear.
00:08:14On those curves as he comes out again, you've got to keep the power down.
00:08:17Hear that wheel spin as he comes out.
00:08:19Very low downforce circuit, the lowest downforce circuit the cars run at during the year as
00:08:24he works his way down to the east curve.
00:08:30Hard braking again.
00:08:31Take it down to 2nd gear, pop that curve, pop the next curve, and as he comes out, try
00:08:35not to ride too much on the right-hand curve.
00:08:38The car wants to drift out the outside, let it go out to 3rd gear, 4th gear, 5th gear,
00:08:42and works his way down towards the Ayrton Senna chicane.
00:08:46Again, back up to 215 miles an hour as he comes down here.
00:08:51Severe braking.
00:08:52Watch out for a few bumps coming in there.
00:08:54Pop it onto the curves.
00:08:55You have to ride the left curve as you come out to get the full power of the car to take
00:08:59you down the final straightaway towards the famous stadium.
00:09:03As you come down here, you can see the crowds of people standing there in that stand, 215
00:09:06miles an hour.
00:09:07And look at that, 100,000 people sitting down.
00:09:104th gear as he goes through the turn, coming into the Sachs curve, the next one, slightly
00:09:15cambered corner.
00:09:16You've got to be careful.
00:09:17You don't get it out too wide.
00:09:18As you come out of here, get all the grip you can on the road, then flick through the
00:09:22left, flick through the right, drops downhill a little bit, back off the power, back on
00:09:25the power, come up over a little bit of oversteer.
00:09:28There's the pit entry, and now he feeds his way through the final curve, south curve,
00:09:32onto the pit straight.
00:09:33That was a lap with Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:09:36And that was one of the laps that he ran during qualifying, which put him up on the outside
00:09:41pole as Eddie Irvine takes one of his reconnaissance laps.
00:09:43Derek, let's have a look at the highlights from yesterday's qualifying.
00:09:48Qualifying yesterday, we didn't know quite what to expect.
00:09:50We expected the McLarens to be all out there, but in fact, Minardi go out first, as they
00:09:54often do, but they've done a lot of modifications, aerodynamic work to their car.
00:09:57As Mark Gennet had actually qualified 15th, a superb bit of driving.
00:10:02The Panis was out there in the Peugeot, the Prost Peugeot, doing an excellent job.
00:10:07So was Jarno Trulli.
00:10:08They both qualified very well for the first time, but Trulli lost two engines.
00:10:11There's his second one expiring for him.
00:10:13Not at all good.
00:10:14Let's hope it runs better in the race today.
00:10:17Rubens Barrichello did another sterling job in the Stuart Ford.
00:10:21We thought he might have popped a bit harder than sixth, but nonetheless, a very fine drive
00:10:24by him.
00:10:25Carlo outshone Eddie Owein, can you believe, in his second drive for the Ferrari, settling
00:10:29in very well there as he comes to the stadium.
00:10:31David Coulthard had an off moment, as you can see, as the tread comes completely off
00:10:35that left rear tyre.
00:10:37Something that Bridgestone are a little bit concerned about.
00:10:39Eddie Owein gets thwarted in his final attempt on the last few dying moments.
00:10:43He gets a bit of sideways air, trying to get by, doesn't do such a good lap.
00:10:46But it was Heinz-Hauer Frenzen that set the German fans alight with an excellent second
00:10:50place.
00:10:51And look how pumped up he was.
00:10:52But yet again, it was that man, Mika Häkkinen, that goes out and gets pole position.
00:10:57Let's go down.
00:10:58Peter is talking to Olivier Panis.
00:11:03Yes, very quick on Friday.
00:11:05And the big question was, would they hold their speed through qualifying?
00:11:07And they did.
00:11:08Great seventh position for Olivier.
00:11:09Yes, I'm very pleased and very happy for the team and myself, because we worked a lot to
00:11:14prepare this Grand Prix, in particular in Monza, with this aerodynamic.
00:11:20I worked very well in Monza to balance the car with the aerodynamic, and the feeling
00:11:24is quite good.
00:11:25OK, a little surprise, but I'm very happy.
00:11:29Obviously, it's a low downforce circuit, and as you say, you've taken off downforce.
00:11:32What was it like through the infield section, where you do need grip?
00:11:35Yes, the last section is quite difficult to push, because the car is very light and it's
00:11:40very slippery.
00:11:41But for this track, it's very important, because we have not, for this moment, the best car,
00:11:48but we have a good car for this circuit.
00:11:49Not the best car, but certainly making progress.
00:11:51Back to you.
00:11:53Panis happy, not just due to qualifying, but because he is second fastest in this morning's
00:11:57warm-up, and his teammate Jarno Trulli is fourth quickest.
00:11:59So, look for good things on the Peugeot Prost today.
00:12:02What about race strategy today, Derek?
00:12:04Well, you can see, obviously, this is three times they're doing 200 miles an hour.
00:12:08A lot of brake wear they're going to have to contend with.
00:12:10They had the problem in Austria.
00:12:11They're going to have major problems here.
00:12:12Again, it's down to one or two stops.
00:12:14Last year, a lot of people had one stop.
00:12:16Of course, we have the tire wear problem, and the problem that David Coulthard had yesterday.
00:12:20Maybe they'll have to come in just to keep a good check on those tires.
00:12:24The wave at work here around the stadium in Hockenheim.
00:12:27You saw a big smile on Mika Salo.
00:12:29A minute ago, I saw a big scowl on the face of Damon Hill.
00:12:32And walking away from his car rather impassionately was Mika Hockenheim, as is his nature.
00:12:38Tire wear will be a big story here today.
00:12:41Not how they use these tires, but how many they have.
00:12:43Peter?
00:12:44Played a significant role.
00:12:45Both drivers, Irvine and Coulthard, used new tires on their last run after their pit stop.
00:12:50Now, why is this?
00:12:51Why do they sometimes use scrub sets and sometimes new sets?
00:12:54Well, of course, there is a limit to the number of tires every driver can use over a Grand Prix weekend.
00:12:58If that driver is clever enough to decide what compound he wants to run early enough in the weekend
00:13:03and save enough sets for the race, he can have new sets for the race.
00:13:06That's what Eddie Irvine did in Austria.
00:13:08He did a very, very good job.
00:13:09How can you, the viewer, tell if he's on new tires or used tires?
00:13:13Well, obviously, the new tire is slightly shinier.
00:13:15And if it's scrubbed in, it might have a film of dust in the grooves.
00:13:18That's what you might see on television.
00:13:20See if you can spot it next time the car leaves the pit lane.
00:13:22Back to you.
00:13:24Boris Becker involved in a tire discussion, I believe.
00:13:27Yes, he's talking to Norbert Haug, I think, of Mercedes.
00:13:30Obviously having a very close tie.
00:13:32There's a German driver.
00:13:34Each team is allowed eight sets of dry tires and seven sets of full-threaded wet tires,
00:13:39but they have to choose the soft or medium compound prior to qualifying.
00:13:42We believe all the teams are on the soft compound tires today.
00:13:46When we come back, we'll update the Michael Schumacher situation.
00:13:49The first driver, we believe, to have a Union Jack on his helmet was Derek Bell,
00:13:53and now one driver's wife has convinced him to do the same.
00:13:59All right, well, my colors, well, as you can see, it's a very clean helmet I've got.
00:14:04I've basically been the same.
00:14:05I think the blue, which has come in the Union Jack and the blue around the side, wasn't really there.
00:14:10It was mainly the white, the orange, and the black.
00:14:16This illuminated sort of orange-red, well, it used to come actually down here originally,
00:14:22and that was just because I always wanted something that stood out,
00:14:25and with that color, it used to stand out if I was even at the back of the grid or anywhere.
00:14:30So that was the reason for that.
00:14:32Now, the reason for changing and putting this Union Jack on,
00:14:36which came about three or four races during this season, and the one on the top,
00:14:39was just because I'd never actually had a Union Jack on my helmet.
00:14:47Well, it's T-shirt weather here at Hockenheim, the Grand Prix of Germany.
00:14:50There's David Coulthard, stripped down to his Nomex undies, getting set to climb back aboard.
00:14:55It is blistering hot here, 86 degrees.
00:14:5890 degrees is the temperature of the asphalt.
00:15:01Jean Todt and Eddie Jordan, maybe sharing budget information or something there.
00:15:08No chance of rain today. It's just plain hot.
00:15:11We appreciate your comments and criticism, and congratulations.
00:15:14At Formula One, at foxsports.net, we read all your e-mails
00:15:18and try to incorporate some of your questions and ideas into the telecast where we can.
00:15:23Coming up next, on our Formula One coverage schedule,
00:15:27we're in Hungary August 15th, Belgium on the 29th of August.
00:15:31In September, we'll be in Italy in the Nürburgring.
00:15:34In October, Malaysia and Japan.
00:15:36Most of these races will be at 10 a.m. local time.
00:15:39You see that Italy and the Grand Prix of Europe will be at noon your local time,
00:15:43and the Grand Prix of Japan will be live.
00:15:49Well, Michael Schumacher not racing here due to a broken leg.
00:15:52However, his influence is felt, as Peter got up very early in the morning to update us.
00:16:05It's very early on Sunday morning.
00:16:08Hockenheim's canyon of empty grandstands has yet to be filled,
00:16:11but the crowd are beginning to trickle into the circuit.
00:16:13And the big question is, how many people are going to come to the German Grand Prix this year
00:16:17to watch a race in which Michael Schumacher is not competing?
00:16:20The answer is, of course, that they've come in their thousands.
00:16:24Schumacher caps are outselling silver Mercedes caps 5 to 1, and why not?
00:16:28In the late 1980s, Hockenheim attracted a maximum of 60,000 people.
00:16:32Ten years on, in the peak of the Schumacher era,
00:16:35twice that number filled the racetrack and still lay by their Schumi souvenirs,
00:16:39especially now that there is an emotional edge to him and his public wish to make a statement.
00:16:44Schumi! Schumi! Schumi! Schumi! Schumi!
00:16:48It's unbelievable, but then after the accident,
00:16:51we have much more selling of Michael Schumacher, of collection pieces,
00:16:56than we did in the months before.
00:16:58I just feel like it's supporting him, it's solidarity to Michael,
00:17:03and this is fantastic.
00:17:05It's wonderful to see how this fan group is behind Michael and support him,
00:17:10and I think it's a good strategy and a good marketing.
00:17:13So, as the cars set out now on their reconnaissance laps,
00:17:16the crowd are showing their support, about 150,000 of them indeed,
00:17:20and in so doing, they're setting a precedent.
00:17:22Michael Schumacher may be in Switzerland today,
00:17:24but in every other sense, he's here at Hockenheim.
00:17:29We will hear from Michael Schumacher momentarily to update us on his condition.
00:17:33We didn't want to speculate last week when Schumacher would come back.
00:17:37We were hearing as early as two weeks, we were hearing not at all this season,
00:17:41so it was pointless to speculate, but we will get an update for you
00:17:44during our Toyota pre-race coverage today.
00:17:47Well, Formula One in the U.S. returns September 2000,
00:17:52and who better to talk to about that than America's first world champion,
00:17:55Phil Hill, who won it in 61?
00:18:02I think it's a very thrilling time that we're into,
00:18:06and actually the fact that the whole Veminous thing
00:18:10has sort of diminished now, decades later,
00:18:13to the point that we can really look at it in a global sense,
00:18:17and the thing that exemplifies it more than almost anything
00:18:21is to find that we're going to see Indianapolis
00:18:25as the venue for the return to Formula One in the United States.
00:18:30Even though there might be a certain irreverent view on the part of some
00:18:36going backwards down the front straightaway at Indy
00:18:39and using the turn forward than escape road,
00:18:43I mean, nonetheless, I'm sure they're going to do a fabulous job of doing it.
00:18:48I'm really looking forward to it. I think it's going to be wonderful.
00:18:51And so are we.
00:18:53You can get ticket information for Formula One 2000 at Indianapolis
00:18:57by calling 1-800-822-4639 or email them.
00:19:00Their address is tickets at brickyard.com.
00:19:07A look at the stadium area of the circuit.
00:19:10Here at Hockenheim, we'll hear from Michael Schumacher
00:19:12during his recovery when we come back.
00:19:15You know, it's not only those long treeline straightaways
00:19:18that remind us of Road America in Elkhart Lake.
00:19:21There, you have to have a bratwurst and an Irocorn and a beer.
00:19:24Well, it's no different here in Hockenheim.
00:19:32The Grand Prix of Germany on Fox Sportsnet is brought to you by Toyota.
00:19:36Every day belongs to you. Make it count.
00:19:39Toyota, every day.
00:19:42The crowd in tent as they watch the big screens and listen to the public address
00:19:46as Michael Schumacher addressed the crowd at his home Grand Prix here in Germany.
00:19:50There's his younger brother, Ralph, settling in and getting ready to race.
00:19:54Let's visit with the recuperating Michael Schumacher.
00:20:00Thank you, Michael, for sparing your time with us today.
00:20:03Michael, you have many fans missing you here in Hockenheim,
00:20:05but I believe you have some fans with you, your family.
00:20:08How is life at home in Switzerland during the racing season?
00:20:13Obviously, you wish to be on the circuit and not sitting at home.
00:20:17But basically, what has happened, I'm pretty happy already sitting here on this sofa
00:20:24and being able to give interviews.
00:20:26And I would like to use the opportunity to say thanks to all my English supporters
00:20:30where I got tremendous support and many, many nice letters and presents.
00:20:35And I would like to use this opportunity to say thank you.
00:20:38Michael, it's been three weeks since the accident.
00:20:40When can Ferrari expect to see you back in the driving seat?
00:20:44That's a difficult question.
00:20:46Basically, every week we have a meeting with the doctors
00:20:49and then we visit the healing of everything.
00:20:53But it's not only a bone problem, it's as well on my heel where I have a cut
00:21:00and that is basically more affecting me because of the flexibility of my foot
00:21:05and the healing itself.
00:21:07And I'm not able to predict when things will be right.
00:21:13I see.
00:21:14But without driving the car, Michael, have you been able to use your expertise
00:21:17to assist the continuing development of the Ferrari?
00:21:21I mean, I'm in consistent contact with the team.
00:21:24I know every detail, what they change, what they do.
00:21:27And obviously, if I have an opinion on something, I will express this.
00:21:31But it is important that they listen now after their drivers
00:21:35because they can take the immediate feeling.
00:21:37You need to sit in the car to feel really what's going on.
00:21:40So you can just give a gross impression rather than a detailed feedback.
00:21:47So it's not very much I can do, to be honest.
00:21:50And finally, what's your prediction of this afternoon's race?
00:21:53I'd say, first of all, I wish Heinz-Howard a lot of luck
00:21:57because he's in the most optimistic position, to be honest.
00:22:01Ferraris probably will do well, in my view.
00:22:04But to do a victory, I think it will be difficult.
00:22:07Nevertheless, not impossible.
00:22:09So if the McLarens wouldn't win, I would appreciate that to some degree.
00:22:15But I don't know.
00:22:18If the McLarens wouldn't win, I would appreciate that to some degree.
00:22:22But anyway, we will see this afternoon what will happen.
00:22:27Thank you, Michael. We hope to see you back as soon as possible. Thanks.
00:22:30OK. Thanks.
00:22:32So no timeline set for Schumacher's return, just as his healing progress continues.
00:22:36Here's David Coulthard and there is Mika Salo, who sits in for Schumacher.
00:22:42Well, Peter Windsor had a really tough interview today
00:22:45with Ron Dennis of Team McLaren one-on-one.
00:22:48So how does it feel?
00:22:49You're watching the opening lap of the race on the pit monitor.
00:22:51Your chief rival is sidelined with a broken leg
00:22:55and your two drivers run into one another.
00:22:57I wanted to ask Ron Dennis this question, of course,
00:22:59but first I asked him about Mika Häkkinen,
00:23:01his feel for Mika and how well Mika is driving this year.
00:23:06In the car, he's been improving still, race on race.
00:23:10He's very, very focused now, very committed.
00:23:14And that really shows outside the car as well.
00:23:19You can see it in his eyes.
00:23:21How easy or difficult was it for you on the pit wall when you saw that accident?
00:23:25We didn't think much about it.
00:23:26In fact, we made some fundamental mistakes,
00:23:30one of which was not to immediately tell David
00:23:36that the incident was not a problem
00:23:39and that he should not think about it in the car and he should get on and race.
00:23:42And that mistake saw him push and open a significant lead.
00:23:50And then when he backed off to conserve the car and the tyres,
00:23:55he started thinking about it
00:23:57and he really struggled with his concentration
00:24:00into the 15 laps prior to the pit stop.
00:24:04And that's really where he lost the race.
00:24:06And we could have taken that away from him
00:24:09if we'd immediately said to him, look, it's not a problem.
00:24:12We're a team, we make mistakes, just get on and race.
00:24:16That would have seen him win the race.
00:24:18And so I was frustrated afterwards for not realising that.
00:24:22If you had team orders in place in Austria, big if,
00:24:25and David knew that he was not going to pass Mika,
00:24:27that accident presumably would not have happened.
00:24:29Has it crossed your mind now to think about buying team orders
00:24:32even though they're relatively close in points?
00:24:34If you have a number one, number two car in your pits,
00:24:38then you are inevitably going to try and segregate the mechanics
00:24:42to number one, number two status.
00:24:44And then the number twos feel inferior
00:24:46and therefore their own performance won't be even as good as it could be.
00:24:51And everybody adopts similar attitudes and stances through the organisation.
00:24:55It is such a corrosive and destructive force,
00:24:59it makes absolutely no sense at all.
00:25:02Number ones and number twos should be determined
00:25:05by the performance of the drivers on the circuit,
00:25:08not by policies or contractual obligations.
00:25:13It's just not the way to run a Grand Prix team.
00:25:17Well judged for yourself.
00:25:18At the moment, no team orders at McLaren, and for very good reason.
00:25:21I think Ron Dennis has got it absolutely right,
00:25:23but let's see what happens in upcoming races.
00:25:25Back to you.
00:25:26Corrosive, that's quite an adjective.
00:25:28Do you agree, Derek?
00:25:29Yeah, well, Ron certainly has a very good way of putting things,
00:25:32and I think it was very stooped words.
00:25:34Well, tough questions and strong answers from Ron Dennis.
00:25:37There's your outside pole man and pole sitter Mika Hakkinen.
00:25:40We'll be back with the grid and the start after this.
00:25:52Welcome back to our Toyota pre-race coverage for the Grand Prix of Germany.
00:25:55We're getting up close on the formation lap for this race,
00:25:59so let's blast through the starting grid.
00:26:01It's the 100th pole for Team McLaren.
00:26:03Mika Hakkinen is on pole, one second off of last year's track record,
00:26:07but fastest of the group.
00:26:09And Heinz-Odor Frenzen doing his ultimately superb qualifying there
00:26:12in the Jordan Honda.
00:26:14Row two, David Coulthard has his third top three start here in six attempts.
00:26:18And that standing bit of work by Mika Salo outshining Eddie Irvine.
00:26:21Irvine has never scored a point in the German Grand Prix,
00:26:24he'll line up fifth.
00:26:26And Barry Kello again doing an excellent performance for the Stewart Ford team.
00:26:29As the formation lap begins, Olivier Penney has his best start ever in this race,
00:26:34seventh.
00:26:35And Damon Hill, who is going to retire, hasn't,
00:26:37and looks very good there on the fourth row.
00:26:39In row five, Jarno Trulli has his best start in three German Grands Prix,
00:26:43ninth.
00:26:44I expected better of the Benetton, but nonetheless it's still running well here.
00:26:47Ralph Schumacher lines up eleventh,
00:26:49that's his worst start in three German Grands Prix.
00:26:52Jacques Villeneuve won't be too happy with his position,
00:26:54but he did do warm-up very well, he's eighth quickest this morning.
00:26:57And Alexander Wurz will start thirteenth, that's his worst start in his home GP.
00:27:02And Zanardi can't be too happy in that position,
00:27:04but nonetheless he hasn't got to grips with the car yet.
00:27:06Riding with Alexander Wurz on the formation lap,
00:27:09Marc Genet starts fifteenth, that's his best ever.
00:27:12And Pedro de Niza, he must be happy,
00:27:15he's a lot quicker than John Alessi today,
00:27:17but still not outstanding for this car.
00:27:19In the ninth row, Johnny Herbert disappointed,
00:27:21broken wing and practice limited his practice time.
00:27:24Riccardo Zonta, eighteenth for BAR,
00:27:27Luca Badower, nineteenth for Minardi,
00:27:29Pedro de la Rosa for Aeros, twentieth.
00:27:31John Alessi said he had no downforce,
00:27:34a big understeer, he'll line up twenty-first next to
00:27:37Tarek Takagi, shotgun on the field, starting twenty-second for Aeros.
00:27:42In the chase for the world championship,
00:27:48Mika Hakkinen comes in here,
00:27:50just two markers up on Eddie Irvine.
00:27:52You're riding with the man who is fourth in the standings,
00:27:56Heinz-Harald Frentzen, can overtake Michael Schumacher
00:27:59today, for third in the championship,
00:28:02as could David Coulthard.
00:28:05Well, Derek, it's very, very hot here, it is humid.
00:28:09What are you feeling as a driver,
00:28:11as you get set to go at it for nearly two hours
00:28:13under these conditions?
00:28:14Well, the one thing about it,
00:28:15there's a tremendous amount of turbulence as well,
00:28:17and we haven't talked about that.
00:28:18When you're stuck behind these cars,
00:28:19going down those straights, two hundred miles an hour,
00:28:21tremendous turbulence.
00:28:22Remember that they can lose up to thirty percent in downforce
00:28:25just by being in the tow of another car.
00:28:27It's going to be quite critical to keep the car clean,
00:28:30you don't want to get it out of shape,
00:28:31you've got to be careful with it, getting power down,
00:28:33and obviously you want to get out of the corners quickly,
00:28:35because if you lose some time getting out of a corner,
00:28:37you're going to lose it for the whole of that straightaway.
00:28:40Yesterday here at Hockenheim,
00:28:41Bruno Gintera and Max Wilson,
00:28:43for the Williams F1 affiliated Petrobras team,
00:28:47finished one-two in the Formula 3000 race.
00:28:49Wilson led the first nineteen laps,
00:28:51Stefano Sarazin took third,
00:28:53last week's winner, Nick Heitfeld,
00:28:55could have wrapped up the championship,
00:28:56but spun while challenging for the lead.
00:28:59Roland Asch won this morning's Porsche Super Cup race.
00:29:08The McLaren drivers versus the Ferrari drivers.
00:29:12Here at Hockenheim, Hockenheim and Coulthard in twelve starts
00:29:15have amassed twenty-five points,
00:29:16neither Mika Salo nor Eddie Irvine
00:29:18have scored a point on this racetrack.
00:29:20It is remarkable to notice that, isn't it?
00:29:22But of course, this is the best drive of his life for Mika Salo,
00:29:24he is an outstanding young driver,
00:29:26we've been expecting a lot from him,
00:29:27things from him previous years,
00:29:28but this is his, this is the few opportunities
00:29:30while Michael Schumacher is out of the driving seat,
00:29:32to get in there and just show what a talent he is.
00:29:35Round ten of the World Championship,
00:29:37the forty-eighth running of the German Grand Prix,
00:29:40the twenty-fourth at this circuit.
00:29:44Mika Hockenheim alongside,
00:29:46honed country hero,
00:29:48Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
00:29:50as we await the start.
00:29:57Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
00:30:27Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
00:30:57Oh, look at this melee as they go to the east curve. They're doing a tremendous job at keeping out of trouble, I must admit.
00:31:04Here they are wearing their way down to the end center chicane. Mika Hakkinen has got the attention. Look how close they are. Oh, they're weaving about of Salo there.
00:31:12Weaving at Eddie Irvine. Oh, look at, look at that. Oh, they're off the road. Somebody went out very wide, trying to be overtaken by one of the Prosts.
00:31:19But he lost a load of time in that corner. Looked like truly, I have a feeling, I wouldn't swear to it.
00:31:24And then it looked like he lost the gear coming out of the corner. And I'm corrected, it's Villeneuve in the tire barrier with Pedro Diniz.
00:31:30It is not, uh, it's Villeneuve and Diniz in the tire barrier. I'm going to say if not, at least he must have had a tremendous start.
00:31:36Yeah, that's my mistake. Back into the stadium to complete lap one and not seen the safety car. So here is Hakkinen leading the field around.
00:31:47How about Mika Salo? What a, what a fantastic start. Franson just did not seem to get off the grid quickly. There he is in fourth spot.
00:31:55They must have got rid of those two cars. There's yellow flags out and, uh, they must have whipped them away very, very quickly.
00:32:02There is the hook at the bottom of your screen.
00:32:05The crane partially on the track. I personally would have said that was rather dangerous, but there again, that's just me speaking as an old man.
00:32:12Now there's Alessi who will pit. Apparently he picked up some damage, perhaps ran over some debris in the incident.
00:32:17Coulthard has a look inside Mika Salo for second place. Nothing there. It was Villeneuve there with Pedro Diniz in the turn one crash.
00:32:29So no safety car. We stay under green. Safety car is only employed in Formula One if the track is blocked or if the stewards deem it too dangerous to continue the race.
00:32:39Under green flag conditions. And apparently they felt those cars were so far off the racetrack as not to present a tremendous effort.
00:32:47I did totally disagree. I feel if a car is off the track, if he got there, it means other cars can get there as well.
00:32:52And there's a tractor sitting there with a car loaded on it. I think that's a dangerous situation. I wouldn't be happy as a driver.
00:32:57However, I'm sure they're delighted now that at least the race can continue.
00:33:01And it's Haakonen leading for McLaren. Salo second for Ferrari. Coulthard third for McLaren.
00:33:06Frentzen in the Jordan. Barrichello-Stewart in fifth. Irvine's Ferrari sixth.
00:33:11Ralf Schumacher seventh. Alexander Versch. Giancarlo Fisichella the two Benetton. Damon Hill is tenth for Jordan.
00:33:18It's strange. He seems to drop down a gear right in the corner. I noticed that last Grand Prix.
00:33:34I don't know whether it is the fact or if the car just sort of suddenly picks up on the throttle.
00:33:38It sounds like he drops a gear because he obviously has the gear shift on the paddle shift on the steering wheel.
00:33:45Wouldn't you think it would upset the car to shift in the middle of the corner?
00:33:49You'd think so, but it might be just the point that he gets on the power.
00:33:55Oh, look at this. A bit of outbraking going on there. Nearly outbrakes himself and went off the road.
00:34:03And speaking of off the road, there goes the minority off and on again.
00:34:08Working their way down to the Jim Clark chicane.
00:34:23Here they come to the east curve. It was a very, very fast corner until there was a tragedy here some few years ago.
00:34:30And they elected to put the chicane in, but it was a very, very fast corner.
00:34:34Remember, the circuit is very smooth, but there are bumps under braking, particularly into the second chicane.
00:34:38You have to be very aware and you can see the cars weave around under braking.
00:34:41Remember, they're running something like 40% less downforce than they do at Monaco.
00:34:46So it just gives you an idea of how fast this circuit is. The fastest circuit in the World Championship Series.
00:34:53Derek, I'm looking at how much pressure Mika Salo is under from David Coulthard and also how Eddie Irvine in the second Ferrari...
00:35:00Oh, look at Barrichello overtaking the Jordan. Wonderful bit of overtaking by Rubens.
00:35:04That was a very bold bit of braking. Superb stuff.
00:35:07Nice move by Barrichello. Stewart using the new Series 4 Ford Cosworth V10 spec engine.
00:35:14Let's have another look at the start. Look at sideways is Frentzen.
00:35:17Yeah, well, Frentzen obviously wants to get across the road and block out Coulthard from coming to.
00:35:21Meanwhile, he lets Salo through. Not very clever of him, really.
00:35:24He thinks he'll go to the outside, but doesn't. Mika, he's got a good start.
00:35:27Clever of him, really. He thinks he'll go to the outside, but doesn't.
00:35:29Mika, meanwhile, gets in there nice and steadily.
00:35:32And then we just see this move further back, and you just see the involvement there with Villeneuve and, of course, with Pedro Diniz.
00:35:39Remember, that is something like the 17th non-finish this season of the BAR team.
00:35:46Oh, that was a real weave across the road. I wonder how that happened. I don't quite understand that.
00:35:51Well, it looked to me as if Villeneuve got hit in the right rear wheel.
00:35:55Somebody banged into Villeneuve, and that sent him across the track into Diniz.
00:35:59Absolutely, yes, because he suddenly veered across the road into Diniz.
00:36:04Good bit of overtaking here by Rubens, just last lap.
00:36:07Superb. Nice, clean move. Beautiful work.
00:36:10And Eddie Jordan not looking that happy about what went on just there.
00:36:13But, nonetheless, there's one of the... Fizzy Keller in for a run.
00:36:17He might have been, of course, involved in the melee at the start.
00:36:20Maybe that's... He got a bit of damage there.
00:36:22He's certainly in for some pit stop. Probably changing his tires.
00:36:26Remember, any sort of slight vibration you get from a tire after the incident yesterday with Coulthard,
00:36:31when he lost a whole tread, nobody can quite figure out why.
00:36:33Any vibration you get with these tires, I can tell you, when you're doing 220 miles an hour,
00:36:37you come in pretty quickly and say, could you change these, please, sir?
00:36:40I was saying earlier, just before Barrichello made the pass,
00:36:43Salo's under heavy pressure from Coulthard, and Irvine has been under a very heavy pressure as well from Ralf Schumacher.
00:36:50Could the Ferraris have started with a full load of fuel and, again, be looking at a one-stop strategy
00:36:55and maybe carrying more fuel than some of these other cars?
00:36:57Well, that's what they did last year, of course.
00:37:00Maybe they'll do it again this year.
00:37:02We saw what a great job they did in Austria last week.
00:37:04So, it is a possibility.
00:37:06And, of course, there is a possibility that Eddie is sitting back there, maybe, with the full load,
00:37:11and maybe Salo has got the lighter load.
00:37:13Maybe they're trying different strategies on both cars,
00:37:15because they certainly don't need to let Hacken and get away.
00:37:17No.
00:37:18But he is doing just that, of course.
00:37:20One of the reasons is, of course, is that Salo has got all the attentions of David Coulthard behind him,
00:37:24and that does just deter you from sort of sticking your head down and going for it.
00:37:291.6 seconds is Mika Hakkinen's lead.
00:37:31Mika Salo, David Coulthard, Barrichello, Frentzen, and Irvine are in the six point-paying positions,
00:37:37as we've now completed four laps in the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
00:37:42Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage of the Grand Prix of Germany at Hockenheim.
00:37:46Mika Hakkinen has opened up a 1.6 second lead on Ferrari driver Mika Salo,
00:37:51with David Coulthard here in hot pursuit.
00:37:54Well, David Coulthard had a look down the inside of Mika Salo just now,
00:37:57tried to go by, but didn't.
00:37:58He's going to do it in a moment.
00:37:59He knows he mustn't let Mika get away in front of him.
00:38:02David's got to sort of keep this momentum up.
00:38:04Salo goes a little bit wide.
00:38:05It's very possible here that Salo is right in front of him.
00:38:08A little bit wide. It's very possible here that Salo is running a lighter fuel load
00:38:13than some of the other guys around him, hence his speed up front
00:38:16and Eddie Irvine's sort of slightly slower pace behind.
00:38:19Look at David. Is he going to? No, he doesn't.
00:38:21But he's having a good look.
00:38:23Aside from Hakkinen, I think the fastest car on the track is on the right side of your screen.
00:38:26That white Stewart Ford for Rubens Barrichello made the move up past Frentzen,
00:38:30and now he's all over D.C.
00:38:32Yes, he's doing a super.
00:38:33But I did mention, I think that Salo is possibly holding David Coulthard up,
00:38:37which is allowing Barrichello to get in there.
00:38:41So it's a mix-up from second on back.
00:38:43There's the Ferrari of Salo, second.
00:38:46Coulthard, third.
00:38:47Barrichello, fourth, as we have a look at the running order now after five laps.
00:38:51Forty-five laps is the distance.
00:38:54Irvine's already six seconds behind Mika Hakkinen.
00:38:58That isn't good at this stage of the race for the Ferrari driver.
00:39:00He needs to be a lot closer.
00:39:01He wants to get some really big points here this weekend.
00:39:05Remember, the one thing they have to look out for is brakes here.
00:39:07There's three times a lap they're braking from 200 miles an hour.
00:39:10Look at the brakes there.
00:39:11They brake down to 60 miles an hour from 222 miles an hour.
00:39:15That's what Coulthard was doing yesterday.
00:39:17Very, very hard on the brakes.
00:39:19And, of course, you can easily lock up wheels if you're not careful in flat spot tires.
00:39:24David Coulthard lost a tire in practice this weekend.
00:39:28He was in seventh gear running about 220 miles an hour
00:39:31when the Bridgestone engineers say that they have examined the tire and that it was cut.
00:39:36They don't know for what reason, whether it ran over a piece of stone, bit of debris,
00:39:40but it was a cut tire.
00:39:42It was not a failure of the tire.
00:39:44It stripped the whole tread from the left rear tire and was quite a moment, you'd say, for David Coulthard.
00:39:50A nasty moment.
00:39:51Yeah, I actually lost a tire at Hockenheim right at this very place before the other chicane.
00:39:55I ended upside down in a Formula 2 BMW racing car,
00:39:59and it wasn't a nice experience at all, I can assure you.
00:40:01When a tire goes, the car goes totally out of control, flicks around,
00:40:04and all hell breaks loose, as they say.
00:40:07Great run for Johnny Herbert.
00:40:08He started 17th, teammate to Barrichello, and the second, Stewart.
00:40:13His practice time very limited, we told you, due to a wing failure.
00:40:17Oh, look at that.
00:40:18Sorry, David tried to go down the inside of Mico Salo.
00:40:20He couldn't get down the inside.
00:40:22He went out very wide.
00:40:24Sprenson locking it up.
00:40:26That's actually, I'm sorry, Damon, I'm sorry.
00:40:28And he went off the road there.
00:40:31Oh, dear, is he going to damage those front wings?
00:40:35No, it seems that he's just about all right.
00:40:37The infield is fairly smooth.
00:40:40Damon Hill was running in 9th, and I was mentioning Johnny Herbert.
00:40:44Oh, dear.
00:40:45One of the Stewart Fords in problems.
00:40:47Barrichello already just turning to try and get into the pit lane.
00:40:50Oh, dear, what a disaster.
00:40:52This new Ford CR1 engine.
00:40:57They expected greater things from it.
00:40:59It expired in the Austrian Grand Prix, but my goodness, it does have some power.
00:41:03Good thing he was near the pit or it would be a long walk back around.
00:41:06Johnny Herbert was up to 10th, and he'll pick up another spot now with Barrichello coasting into the pit.
00:41:12So both of the Stewarts fast.
00:41:14I was going to ask, hopefully not fragile, and half of that question's been answered.
00:41:17Look at David, look at David just having a look down now.
00:41:19He just hasn't quite got it going into that corner.
00:41:21The brakes on the Ferrari are superb at this time.
00:41:24Of course, seeing, talking about Ferrari and Barrichello,
00:41:27there is the possibility or the talk that Barrichello is going to go to Ferrari for the year 2000,
00:41:32and Eddie Oven may well go to Stewart, but there's nothing written in concrete yet, that's for sure.
00:41:38Salah has a look at his left mirror as he enters a left-turning corner,
00:41:43and there is Barrichello, sadly, in the garage.
00:41:46There's Paul Stewart on the right of your picture.
00:41:49Barrichello has finished the German Grand Prix only once in six starts.
00:41:53He scored one point in 1996 here.
00:41:58There's the interval, first to second, two and a half seconds,
00:42:01and negligible from second to third.
00:42:03It's a good thing the mirrors on these cars are so small,
00:42:05because otherwise that McLaren would look very large in Mika Salah's.
00:42:08I can assure it's filling the whole of that mirror up, have no worries about that.
00:42:12It is the most wonderful experience driving through this stadium,
00:42:15because you've been outside in the very fast parts of the circuit,
00:42:19and here you are, you come back in the stadium,
00:42:21and there are all these people, you can actually hear the roars of the crowd
00:42:24as you come through the stadium.
00:42:29They use a lot of the road coming out onto the straight,
00:42:31and of course it's vital to get all that speed, get the momentum,
00:42:34and carry it all the way down the long, long straight down to the Jim Clark chicane.
00:42:39Bulldard working the draft, car darting around just a bit.
00:42:43It is amazing, you can watch it from the aerial shots just now,
00:42:45the car is moving around quite a lot in the wind behind his car,
00:42:49catches him up under braking, but in the straight line,
00:42:52that Ferrari does seem to have some grunt.
00:42:54But remember, he is possibly running a lighter load,
00:42:56I would say the fact that Irvine is so far back,
00:42:59means that Salah is running a lighter load.
00:43:06So at seven laps, Mika Hakkinen, Mika Salah, David Coulthard.
00:43:13McLaren in front, Ferrari in second.
00:43:17McLaren in third.
00:43:19For Coulthard, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who started outside,
00:43:21pole fourth for Jordan.
00:43:23Eddie Irvine, now up to fifth for Ferrari, with the stewards retirement.
00:43:27And Ralph Schumacher, for Williams, comes up into the sixth place.
00:43:32Ralph doing an excellent job, he has been shining so much this year,
00:43:35he qualified eleventh, and he's already up to sixth place,
00:43:39it shows the measure of this young man.
00:43:41Nobody's talked about him much this weekend,
00:43:42remember that Williams will be running BMW engines next year,
00:43:45so it'll be quite a scene here.
00:43:47There'll be no Winfield, no cigarette advertising on the cars.
00:43:49People here at the German Grand Prix are running cigarette advertising.
00:43:53Germany said to heck with the rules and regulations in Europe,
00:43:55we're gonna do what we want to do,
00:43:57so they're all running with a cigarette sponsorship,
00:43:59but it won't be forever.
00:44:00Look at this lot coming down here.
00:44:02Johnny Herbert moving up, passing Damon,
00:44:04and Herbert is definitely on the charge,
00:44:07that'll move him up into eighth place.
00:44:09Super bit of driving.
00:44:10Oh, and he goes out wide, he loses it,
00:44:12and then they connect.
00:44:13Oh dear, what is Schumacher going to do there,
00:44:15that was real Formula 3 stuff.
00:44:17He and Jarno Trulli getting together there,
00:44:20as he had made the pass on Damon,
00:44:23and then overcooked it going into the corner.
00:44:25Alexander Wurz was just ahead,
00:44:27and now you see the distance that Wurz has opened up on that pack.
00:44:30Here it is again.
00:44:34Coming through the stadium,
00:44:35whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops.
00:44:38My goodness me, it's very, very tight through there.
00:44:42So that's Wurz making the pass on Hill,
00:44:44and Damon Hill's lost some momentum,
00:44:46that allowed Johnny Herbert to get a run on Damon,
00:44:49and Damon takes it right back.
00:44:54Mika Hakkinen just showing what a great driver he really is,
00:44:56the 1998 World Champion,
00:44:59and he just seems to put a masterful stroke
00:45:01on every race that he does, wherever he is.
00:45:03Oh, one of the, looks like Fizikela pulls off the road.
00:45:08In the stadium, right there on the grid.
00:45:11Is that Fizikela?
00:45:13Yeah, he had dropped right down to the bottom of the running order.
00:45:17Something badly amiss.
00:45:19Well, he had a pit stop, didn't he, very early on.
00:45:23But Mika Hakkinen, he's now got three and a half,
00:45:25no, 3.3 second lead over Mika Salo.
00:45:27David Coulthard still cannot get by that Ferrari.
00:45:30I find that very difficult to believe.
00:45:31These cars are so evenly matched,
00:45:33but I suppose that's why.
00:45:34But I thought he got more of a toe out of the back of that Ferrari.
00:45:38Eddie Irvine still back at 6th.
00:45:41And look at Ralph, he'll be working his way up,
00:45:43he's doing a superb job there.
00:45:45Alexander Wurz having another fine drive,
00:45:47rather similar to the one he had in Austria last weekend.
00:45:50Damon Hill, now right up the tailpipes of Wurz,
00:45:53and Damon's pulled a little distance on Johnny Herbert
00:45:56as they come back into the stadium.
00:45:57The steward of Rubens Barrichello is out with gearbox problems,
00:46:00we're told, it's not engine related,
00:46:02but rather gearbox for Barrichello.
00:46:05I wonder what color the Williams will be next year,
00:46:07with BMW power plant rolling.
00:46:08It'll be a wild color scheme,
00:46:10as BMW always do on all their racing programs.
00:46:12They always have wonderful color schemes,
00:46:14and I'm sure they won't disappoint this time.
00:46:16David is not having a nice time there in that toe at all,
00:46:19I can tell you that.
00:46:20Now come on, is he gonna get it?
00:46:21He's gonna go this time, he's got to get, but he's not.
00:46:25He's not, and Salo isn't chopping him off.
00:46:27Salo's not giving him that hard of time.
00:46:29I would have thought David should have been,
00:46:31should be a little bit more aggressive.
00:46:33Woo, it's an interesting pit here,
00:46:34Zonta going by Zanardi,
00:46:36locking it all up,
00:46:37Zanardi possibly popped down the inside afterwards.
00:46:40They're having a bit of a go there for 11th place,
00:46:4512th place.
00:46:48Oh, a wing!
00:46:49He's a wing off of Kulkarskar,
00:46:51the left end plate of the front wing is gone.
00:46:55Yeah, that was a major piece,
00:46:56he's really gonna notice that.
00:46:57Why did he, why did that come off?
00:46:59Poor old David again,
00:47:00I shouldn't say poor old David,
00:47:01but he certainly does have his bad breaks.
00:47:03There it is, look,
00:47:04there's the end piece of the left hand front wing.
00:47:06I think he bounced it off the curbing.
00:47:08Well, of course there is a lot of flex on these things,
00:47:11you can see it there,
00:47:12but of course if it just happens to flicker,
00:47:14let's just see what happens.
00:47:15Oh, has he touched the back of Salo's car?
00:47:17That's more like it.
00:47:18Oh, he bounced it off Mika's right rear tire.
00:47:21Well David, I'm afraid,
00:47:22oh boy, that wasn't the best place to go by,
00:47:24he should have gone by a little earlier.
00:47:26Oh no, says his wife,
00:47:28the wife of Mika Hakkinen says that,
00:47:30and I do not prefer.
00:47:32David's ready to come in,
00:47:33they've got a new nose ready for him.
00:47:35And this is a good strategy move,
00:47:37I mean, certainly,
00:47:38Coulthard would slow down considerably
00:47:40unless they replace the wing.
00:47:41The time it takes to replace it
00:47:42will be less than the time he would lose
00:47:44on the track if he stayed out.
00:47:45Oh, absolutely,
00:47:46he already lost a lot of time there,
00:47:47you could see already.
00:47:49So Coulthard will surrender third place
00:47:51to Heinz-Harald Frenzen,
00:47:53Eddie Irvine will likely move up,
00:47:55as will Ralf Schumacher,
00:47:56and he should pop on track just ahead
00:47:58of Alexander Wurz in seventh place.
00:48:01Come boys, get that nose off.
00:48:03This is going to be a 12-second stop at least,
00:48:05isn't it?
00:48:06A little rhinoplasty.
00:48:08Nose job.
00:48:1014 and a half seconds,
00:48:12that will cost him dearly,
00:48:13but that's the way things go.
00:48:15David's done a bit of nudging
00:48:17with his nose the last couple of weekends.
00:48:19Yes.
00:48:20He'll be so frustrated about it,
00:48:22so frustrated.
00:48:23Now I think he'll be in front of Wurz,
00:48:25we'll have to check.
00:48:27Should put him in about seventh place.
00:48:30Coming back on the track.
00:48:34You are watching the Grand Prix of Germany
00:48:36from Hockenheim on Fox Sportsnet.
00:48:38There's that seventh place battle,
00:48:39and he is, Coulthard's well behind it.
00:48:45On Fox Sportsnet,
00:48:46Mika Hockenheim leading Mika Salo
00:48:48and Heinz-Harald Frenzen
00:48:51for Jordan.
00:48:52Keith Olbermann and Kevin Frazier
00:48:54bring you all the day's scores,
00:48:55highlights and breaking stories
00:48:56on Fox Sports News.
00:48:57Primetime Nightly at 10.
00:48:59Check your local listings.
00:49:02Well, I just have to say,
00:49:03Mika Hocken is lapping one second a lap quicker
00:49:06than anybody else in the race.
00:49:08To show the guy hasn't got some performance
00:49:10going this year,
00:49:11some confidence in his driving,
00:49:12as Ron Dennis has said earlier.
00:49:14Oh, there is one of the two
00:49:17cross pulling off the road.
00:49:18I guess it's another engine failure.
00:49:20That's a great pity.
00:49:21Truly went so well in practice,
00:49:24in pre-qualifying,
00:49:25and in warm-up this morning,
00:49:26and they went very, very fast
00:49:28on this high-speed circuit,
00:49:29but the reliability of that car
00:49:31has been very suspect this year.
00:49:33Truly must be very disappointed.
00:49:35Yes, his car broke in qualifying,
00:49:36he hopped in the spare,
00:49:37and then that broke.
00:49:40There it goes.
00:49:44Yeah, that's the third one this weekend
00:49:45that we've seen.
00:49:47So a lot of speed from those Peugeot engines,
00:49:49but...
00:49:50Not the reliability that one would wish for.
00:49:53No, and Truly is out of race.
00:49:55Joining Pedro Diniz,
00:49:56Rubens Barrichello,
00:49:57and Jacques Villeneuve.
00:49:59Diniz and Villeneuve crashed
00:50:01right at the start of the race.
00:50:03In the first corner,
00:50:04when someone got in,
00:50:05I never saw who,
00:50:06got into the right rear wheel
00:50:08of Villeneuve,
00:50:09and that shoved him into Diniz,
00:50:10putting Diniz crossways across the track,
00:50:12and they both went off into the tire wall.
00:50:15David Coulthard came back on track,
00:50:17now shown in 10th position.
00:50:19HÃ¥konen, Salo, Frentzen,
00:50:21Irvine, Schumacher.
00:50:23Wurz, Hill, Herbert, Peni, and Coulthard.
00:50:27The top ten.
00:50:28The person one assumed
00:50:29that would have been behind Jacques Villeneuve
00:50:31would have been Alexander Zanardi,
00:50:32so it wasn't him.
00:50:34Yeah.
00:50:36Broken front suspension
00:50:37for Giancarlo Fisichello.
00:50:40Has him also out of race.
00:50:43Joining Barrichello, Diniz, and Villeneuve.
00:50:50HÃ¥konen's advantage,
00:50:51now up to 5.7 seconds
00:50:52on Mika Salo.
00:50:55There's that Damon Hill,
00:50:56Johnny Herbert,
00:50:58Olivier Peni,
00:50:59and now David Coulthard battle.
00:51:01Let's see how Coulthard does.
00:51:02Remember last week,
00:51:03Mika HÃ¥konen had to come
00:51:04from the tail end of the field,
00:51:06after being spun by his McLaren teammate
00:51:08at turn two,
00:51:09and HÃ¥konen came all the way up
00:51:11for a third place finish.
00:51:12Pretty much the same challenge
00:51:13for Coulthard now,
00:51:14in this race.
00:51:15Be quite interesting to see
00:51:16how they comment at the end of this,
00:51:18because both on both this race,
00:51:19I'm sorry,
00:51:20both the Austrian and the French Grand Prix,
00:51:21when Mika had to do a similar thing,
00:51:23he said,
00:51:24what a great race it was,
00:51:25and how much he enjoyed it.
00:51:27And there we just show David's front right,
00:51:30sorry, left front wing,
00:51:31without the piece hanging,
00:51:32without the end plate on it,
00:51:34which of course would restrict his,
00:51:35his downforce quite considerably.
00:51:37But as I say,
00:51:38Mika in two races has said
00:51:39what a great race he enjoyed,
00:51:40how he enjoyed carving his way through the field.
00:51:42Who said you can't overtake?
00:51:44Most other drivers complain about
00:51:45how bad people aren't letting them by,
00:51:47so let's just see how David gets on,
00:51:49not doing too well at this time.
00:51:52In a lot of American,
00:51:54oh, a little lock up there.
00:51:55Oh, looks like he might have gone straight on.
00:51:57Yes, he absolutely did.
00:51:58He's been doing a bit of this today.
00:52:00And great problem trying to get his brake.
00:52:02Whoa, dear,
00:52:03that DC goes through as well.
00:52:05Came right back on track adjacent to Penney,
00:52:08but of course without the momentum.
00:52:13I must say,
00:52:14they seem to be able to run through
00:52:15these gravel tracks these days.
00:52:16They, I mean,
00:52:17they're meant to be there,
00:52:18they're down to a special specification
00:52:19to arrest the car
00:52:20should it get out of control,
00:52:21but the guys seem to be able to run through it quite well,
00:52:23and we saw Schumacher having quite a ride,
00:52:25obviously at Silverstone,
00:52:26through the traps,
00:52:27sand traps as well.
00:52:29I think that was a lot of the difference, Derek,
00:52:31that what we've been seeing today
00:52:32is cars going sideways through the trap,
00:52:34which does slow them down,
00:52:35and Michael Schumacher went straight off.
00:52:37Absolutely.
00:52:38He had his accident.
00:52:39This is Damon again.
00:52:40Look at it,
00:52:41locked up that front,
00:52:42tries to get it under control,
00:52:43doesn't want to spin it,
00:52:44so he just drives across the shingle.
00:52:47So many cars seem to go off the road these days.
00:52:50The guys are on such a fine limit with these brakes
00:52:53that they lock up a wheel
00:52:55and they're just off the road.
00:52:58Alex Zanardi tried steel brake rotors last week.
00:53:02So did Ralph Schumacher.
00:53:04They tried them on both the Williams
00:53:06as opposed to the carbon rotors,
00:53:08and the engineers said that it,
00:53:10as Damon Hill comes in,
00:53:12the engineers said it made no difference
00:53:14in the braking
00:53:15because the braking's limited by the tires,
00:53:17the grooved tires,
00:53:18so that they didn't lose any braking efficiency.
00:53:20They were just trying for more feel,
00:53:22and the reason that they did not run them in the race
00:53:24was that they are so much heavier
00:53:26than the carbon rotors,
00:53:27but as far as whether or not they performed as well,
00:53:30there wasn't a lot of difference.
00:53:31I see Damon actually stopped the car in that stop.
00:53:34He came in,
00:53:35and while the guys were not ready for him,
00:53:37they obviously didn't pick him up on the radio.
00:53:38He should have called them,
00:53:39but I guess he didn't find any problem with the car
00:53:42until he possibly got in the stadium in the complex area
00:53:44and thought,
00:53:45my goodness, it's time to go in.
00:53:46There is something wrong here,
00:53:47and I noticed he stopped the engine.
00:53:51They're wheeling the car away.
00:53:52Damon's car is being wheeled away.
00:53:58Meanwhile, his teammate Frentzen
00:54:00is under heavy pressure from Eddie Irvine.
00:54:05Yes, it's time for Eddie to make a bit of a move.
00:54:07He's losing a lot of time.
00:54:09He's some nine seconds behind Mika Hakkinen.
00:54:12He has flattened out a bit.
00:54:13At the beginning, Mika did go away a lot,
00:54:15but now Mika seems to have backed off a bit.
00:54:18Maybe the fact that he realizes that
00:54:20he's understood that some of the other cars
00:54:22are on a lighter fuel load
00:54:23and therefore he could conserve brakes.
00:54:25Remember, they have contact with their team managers,
00:54:27and the team manager will tell them,
00:54:28OK, conserve the brakes,
00:54:30and we heard this happened a lot in Austria last week,
00:54:32which is probably the reason that Mika
00:54:33didn't make the inroads into the leading pair
00:54:35right at the end of that race in Austria.
00:54:38There's a comparison, alas,
00:54:39between Frentzen and Irvine.
00:54:41Look at Frentzen pulling across the road
00:54:43to stop Eddie going down the inside.
00:54:47Well, you said Damon Hill's team
00:54:48wasn't quite ready for him,
00:54:50and we've been talking a lot about radio communication.
00:54:53In fact, last week in Austria,
00:54:55radio communication caused two drivers
00:54:58with problems with that
00:54:59to be out of the race.
00:55:00Peter can explain.
00:55:02Pizzercar radios came in for a lot of criticism
00:55:04in the Austrian Grand Prix,
00:55:05both Alex Zanardi and Jean Alési
00:55:07saying they couldn't hear their radios,
00:55:08and that is why both of them
00:55:10failed to make it back to the pits,
00:55:11ran out of fuel.
00:55:12Well, as it turns out,
00:55:13when both those cars were returned to the pits
00:55:15after the race,
00:55:16the radio systems worked perfectly.
00:55:18So whether it was a question of not being able
00:55:19to read the pit signals
00:55:20or not indeed listening to the radio
00:55:22is another matter.
00:55:24Well, Peter, you put a 17,000 rpm V10 in your ear,
00:55:27and I guarantee you
00:55:28it's going to be hard to hear on both ends.
00:55:30And I have to admit, even the other side of the coin
00:55:31is the fact that the earplugs
00:55:32can slightly pull out of your ears as well,
00:55:36so you just can't quite pick up messages,
00:55:37but I would have thought you must be aware
00:55:39roughly when you're due in for fuel.
00:55:41Well, why not, Derek,
00:55:43would the rules permit you to send a signal
00:55:46that would illuminate a light on the dash
00:55:49as a signal?
00:55:50I don't think they can do that.
00:55:51Okay.
00:55:52I'm sure if they could, they would.
00:55:53Well, you're not allowed to have any signal
00:55:54from the, as far as I'm aware,
00:55:55from the pits on that sort of thing.
00:55:57Okay.
00:55:58Just by radio.
00:56:01So here's David Coulthard
00:56:02two weeks in a row
00:56:04hung by his own petard.
00:56:06He got into Mika Hakkinen last week,
00:56:08and now into Mika Salo,
00:56:09has to pit for a new front wing,
00:56:11and he has to fight rush hour traffic.
00:56:13He is in...
00:56:14Ninth place.
00:56:15Yes, ninth now.
00:56:16And doing nothing much about
00:56:18Olivier Panis in front of him,
00:56:19I have to admit.
00:56:20Not doing anything much at all.
00:56:23So now we've got Johnny Herbert again
00:56:25catching up Alexander Wurz.
00:56:27The Benetton, the blue car
00:56:28at the right of your screen,
00:56:29the white car is Herbert
00:56:31in the Stewart Ford,
00:56:32that dark blue, the navy blue car
00:56:34is Olivier Panis,
00:56:35and then Coulthard.
00:56:36Yes, the one remaining
00:56:38Stewart and the one remaining
00:56:39Prost out there.
00:56:41Let's talk about, of course,
00:56:42that Prost at the end of next year,
00:56:43his contract expires with Peugeot,
00:56:45and they will not continue.
00:56:47They had a pretty dismal time
00:56:48with the Prost team.
00:56:50They've got some good designers
00:56:51there now, but something wrong
00:56:52with the engine, and here we come.
00:56:53I think that this looks like
00:56:54Ralf Schumacher...
00:56:55Oh, it's Zonta.
00:56:56I do apologize.
00:56:57Zonta's coming in.
00:57:03Look at that brake dust.
00:57:04We talked about that last week.
00:57:06Look at the brake dust
00:57:07pouring off those brakes
00:57:08as the guys take the wheels off.
00:57:10They're changing the front nose
00:57:11as well, so he obviously
00:57:12came to a bit of contact
00:57:14probably with Zanardi
00:57:16in one of those passing manoeuvres
00:57:17just earlier.
00:57:20That is a very long stop.
00:57:2223 seconds, Riccardo Zonta
00:57:25will put him way down the list.
00:57:27Continuing the problems for BAR,
00:57:29Villeneuve out of race already
00:57:31at the first lap.
00:57:33With Pedro Diniz,
00:57:34Rubens Barrichello's out,
00:57:36Giancarlo Fisichella,
00:57:37Jarno Trulli, Damon Hill...
00:57:39Look at this.
00:57:40Great bit of move here
00:57:41by Johnny Herbert.
00:57:42No, he's being blocked out there.
00:57:44Oh, and Coulthard has got by
00:57:46Olivier Panis.
00:57:48Now David's got to work
00:57:49on Johnny Herbert.
00:57:50Johnny might be a little bit
00:57:51more generous.
00:57:53Here's David's move, is it?
00:57:55Whoa, David.
00:57:56Oh, jeez.
00:57:57You did take the short way
00:57:58through, didn't you?
00:58:00I hope they got a lot of
00:58:01front wings at McLaren.
00:58:03As it puts him out of line here.
00:58:05And that really affects him.
00:58:07Here we go again.
00:58:08Look at that move.
00:58:09Oh, my goodness me.
00:58:13Well, you know,
00:58:14great shots from the
00:58:16German broadcasters.
00:58:17I love the aerial view.
00:58:19And I hope the stewards
00:58:20aren't looking at it.
00:58:21Well, this is not such a good view.
00:58:22They didn't dig through
00:58:23quite so well there.
00:58:24They're having a final dice,
00:58:26these three.
00:58:27Alexander Virts,
00:58:28Johnny Herbert
00:58:29and David Coulthard.
00:58:30David now up to 8th place.
00:58:32David's now got to get by
00:58:33the Stuart Ford on...
00:58:34Oh, Takagi.
00:58:35Takagi yet again.
00:58:36That's another super-dick
00:58:37engine bites the dust.
00:58:39These guys only pay
00:58:40about $20 million a year
00:58:42for the use of these engines.
00:58:44You'd be happy to do that
00:58:45at home, wouldn't you?
00:58:46John Lacey, we hear,
00:58:47is in the pits.
00:58:48And that's Lacey's second stop.
00:58:49He stopped at lap 2
00:58:50and continued.
00:58:51So here he comes in
00:58:52for his second stop.
00:58:53This is the remaining
00:58:54Sauber in the race.
00:58:56Yeah, they're having
00:58:57a dismal weekend.
00:58:59Attrition has been
00:59:00unpredictable here
00:59:01at Hockentime.
00:59:0216 cars finished last year,
00:59:0410 in 97,
00:59:0512 in 96,
00:59:06but only 8 in 94 and 95.
00:59:08So hard to predict.
00:59:09Well, of course,
00:59:10in those days,
00:59:11I would hasten to add
00:59:12that Formula 1 engines
00:59:13were far more fragile
00:59:14years ago.
00:59:15They seem to be so much
00:59:16more reliable now.
00:59:17But having said that,
00:59:18it doesn't mean to say
00:59:19we're not going to get
00:59:20a race of attrition here.
00:59:21Let's watch the engine
00:59:22blow up.
00:59:23Oh, right down the middle
00:59:24of the road.
00:59:25Beautiful piece of work.
00:59:26Mind you,
00:59:27it's not easy for us
00:59:28sitting here
00:59:29in the booth.
00:59:31Yeah, once that oil
00:59:32gets on the rear tires,
00:59:33things can go awry
00:59:34and hurry.
00:59:3516 laps complete.
00:59:36Mika Hakkinen
00:59:37leads in the Grand Prix
00:59:38of Germany
00:59:39on Fox Sportsnet.
00:59:42Welcome back to
00:59:43the German Grand Prix
00:59:44at Hockenheim.
00:59:45Mike Joy with Derek Bell
00:59:46and Peter Windsor.
00:59:47Mika Hakkinen
00:59:48has a 6.2 second lead
00:59:49on Mika Salo.
00:59:51Let's have a look
00:59:52once again at what
00:59:53happened on the start
00:59:54here,
00:59:55which took two cars
00:59:56out of race.
01:00:00Jordan moves across
01:00:01the road to block
01:00:02out David Coulthard.
01:00:03Meanwhile,
01:00:04lets Mika Salo through.
01:00:05Look at them
01:00:06weaving around.
01:00:07Here we go.
01:00:08Let's just look
01:00:09further back.
01:00:10It might have been
01:00:11Johnny Herbert
01:00:12that tapped
01:00:13Villeneuve at the rear.
01:00:14Odd.
01:00:15Very difficult to see.
01:00:16Very, very hard to say.
01:00:17One of the Benetons
01:00:18made a move
01:00:19from way on the outside
01:00:20and dove straight
01:00:21across the track.
01:00:22And I think everybody
01:00:23kind of checked up
01:00:24and moved behind
01:00:25and started.
01:00:26Villeneuve and Benetz
01:00:27out of race
01:00:28in that crash.
01:00:29Barrichello,
01:00:30Fisichella,
01:00:31Jarno Trulli,
01:00:32Damon Hill,
01:00:33and now Tora Takagi
01:00:34by the wayside.
01:00:35Fifteen cars running.
01:00:38John Lacey's made
01:00:39two pit stops.
01:00:40Ricardo Zonta
01:00:41and David Coulthard
01:00:42have been in.
01:00:43I have to say
01:00:44that both
01:00:45Frenzel and Irvine
01:00:46are both catching
01:00:47Salo and Hakkinen
01:00:48in front of them.
01:00:49They're lapping
01:00:50a second a lap
01:00:51quicker now
01:00:52than Hakkinen.
01:00:53Penny coming in
01:00:54for a pit stop.
01:00:55Probably want to get him
01:00:56out of that.
01:00:57A lot of car,
01:00:58a lot of traffic
01:00:59going on obviously.
01:01:00They're running lighter
01:01:01fuel loads
01:01:02I would imagine.
01:01:03And he was in that
01:01:04major group,
01:01:05this little group
01:01:06which has now
01:01:07gone down by one.
01:01:08Now,
01:01:09he's gotten past
01:01:10Wurtz there.
01:01:11Yes,
01:01:12that's Herbert Scott
01:01:13by Wurtz.
01:01:14And Derek,
01:01:15there's an inquiry
01:01:16going on about
01:01:17Coulthard's pass
01:01:18where he dove
01:01:19inside the chicane
01:01:20and put all four wheels
01:01:21off the racetrack
01:01:22to make the pass.
01:01:23So,
01:01:24there's an inquiry
01:01:25underway into that.
01:01:26That's a bit unfair
01:01:27I think if they do him
01:01:28for that.
01:01:29I mean,
01:01:30I don't think he really
01:01:31meant to,
01:01:32but he knew he was
01:01:33going to punt him off
01:01:34if he didn't.
01:01:35I think if you cut
01:01:36the whole corner off
01:01:37on your own,
01:01:38that's one thing.
01:01:39But I think if you
01:01:40find there's a car
01:01:41there as well
01:01:42and you haven't got
01:01:43as much room
01:01:44as you thought,
01:01:45you have to take it
01:01:46off.
01:01:47It's better than
01:01:48having an accident
01:01:49and maybe having
01:01:50somebody hurt.
01:01:51True.
01:01:52I mean,
01:01:53I don't know
01:01:54where we'll go here,
01:01:55but up front,
01:01:56as I say,
01:01:57that Frenzen and
01:01:58Owein are catching
01:01:59up Salo and
01:02:00Hakanen.
01:02:01Hakanen only
01:02:02six seconds
01:02:03also ahead
01:02:04of Mika Salo
01:02:05and Frenzen and
01:02:06Owein are only
01:02:07nine seconds
01:02:08behind Hakanen
01:02:09as well.
01:02:10How about
01:02:11Johnny Herbert
01:02:12here?
01:02:13Started 17th,
01:02:14he is up to 6th.
01:02:15Yes,
01:02:16it's outstanding
01:02:17by Johnny.
01:02:18He, of course,
01:02:19had some problems
01:02:20in practice,
01:02:21especially if you
01:02:22have aerodynamic
01:02:23problems.
01:02:24He was running
01:02:25well last week,
01:02:26of course,
01:02:27and things went
01:02:28wrong for him,
01:02:29but this week,
01:02:30it's lovely to see
01:02:31him doing it
01:02:32because he's got
01:02:33to get out there
01:02:34and prove that it
01:02:35is contract time
01:02:36and I said that
01:02:37too in the Austrian
01:02:38Grand Prix.
01:02:39Look at him,
01:02:40started 17th,
01:02:41currently 6th.
01:02:42His last lap
01:02:43was a 49.9,
01:02:44but the leaders
01:02:45are doing 47s,
01:02:46but that was
01:02:47just his last lap.
01:02:48Oh,
01:02:49look how wide
01:02:50he is,
01:02:51I'm not sure.
01:02:52Got him.
01:02:53Oh,
01:02:54yeah,
01:02:55he's back.
01:02:56But a good
01:02:57drive from Alexander
01:02:58Wirtz,
01:02:59very good drive.
01:03:00He still hasn't
01:03:01signed yet for
01:03:02the Benetton team,
01:03:03he still wants to
01:03:04know just what
01:03:05their plans are,
01:03:06what engine plans
01:03:07they really honestly
01:03:08have for next year.
01:03:09He possibly has
01:03:10other options,
01:03:11there are other
01:03:12drives around,
01:03:13he does have a
01:03:14great talent.
01:03:15And we've
01:03:16learned this
01:03:17morning that
01:03:18both McLaren
01:03:19and McLaren
01:03:20have a great
01:03:21talent for
01:03:22McLaren Mercedes.
01:03:23We talked
01:03:24last week
01:03:25about national
01:03:26colors.
01:03:27Prior to
01:03:281968,
01:03:29when John
01:03:30Player,
01:03:31Team Lotus,
01:03:32took British
01:03:33Racing Green
01:03:34off Colin
01:03:35Chapman's
01:03:36cars,
01:03:37replaced it
01:03:38with the
01:03:39very bright
01:03:40red,

01:06:34in.
01:06:35Strangely

01:07:01Strangely
01:07:02enough,

01:07:13in.
01:07:14Strangely
01:07:15enough,

01:07:23blue stripe,
01:07:24so you
01:07:25might tie that
01:07:26in.
01:07:27Strangely
01:07:28enough,
01:07:29the
01:07:30McLaren
01:07:31has bought
01:07:32the
01:07:33American
01:07:34colors were
01:07:35white with a
01:07:36blue stripe,
01:07:37so you
01:07:38might tie that
01:07:39in.
01:07:40So this is
01:07:41just the
01:07:42opposite
01:07:43strategy
01:07:44Irvine
01:07:45employed
01:07:46last week
01:07:47in Austria
01:07:48where he
01:07:49ran through
01:07:50the entire
01:07:51tank of
01:07:52fuel and
01:07:53cut some
01:07:54fast laps
01:07:55just before
01:07:56he finally
01:07:57pitted when
01:07:58his fuel
01:07:59load was
01:08:00lightest.
01:08:01Yeah,
01:08:02well,
01:08:03they're all
01:08:04stopping for
01:08:059 to
01:08:0610 second
01:08:07stops,
01:08:08which is
01:08:09not
01:08:10a good
01:08:11strategy.
01:08:12I
01:08:13think
01:08:14Salo
01:08:15just
01:08:16lost a
01:08:17piece of
01:08:18something.
01:08:19It
01:08:20could have
01:08:21been part
01:08:22of another
01:08:23bit of
01:08:24debris from
01:08:25another car,
01:08:26but something
01:08:27was bouncing
01:08:28down the
01:08:29road like
01:08:30a little
01:08:31bit of
01:08:32wicker.
01:08:33Hacken and
01:08:34meanwhile up
01:08:35front is
01:08:36doing just
01:08:37a super
01:08:38good
01:08:39job.
01:08:40He's
01:08:41on pole
01:08:42start,
01:08:43which gives
01:08:44him that
01:08:45advantage.
01:08:46And we're
01:08:47now at
01:08:48halfway of
01:08:49the 45
01:08:50laps.
01:08:51And he's
01:08:52pulled another
01:08:53couple of
01:08:54seconds out
01:08:55on Mika
01:08:56Salo
01:08:57on that
01:08:58lap.
01:08:598.3
01:09:00and Salo
01:09:01will pit
01:09:02this time.
01:09:03Ferrari's
01:09:04laid out
01:09:05in their
01:09:06pit stall
01:09:08and he has
01:09:09to take to
01:09:10the escape
01:09:11road and part
01:09:12of the old
01:09:13racetrack as he
01:09:14goes through
01:09:15there.
01:09:16Here comes
01:09:17Salo into
01:09:18the pit lane.
01:09:19So right at
01:09:20the midpoint
01:09:21of the race,
01:09:22this will
01:09:23complete lap
01:09:2423 with
01:09:25Mika Salo
01:09:26in.
01:09:27And
01:09:28Michael
01:09:29Schumacher's
01:09:30crew goes
01:09:31to work for
01:09:32their relief
01:09:33driver.
01:09:34Just
01:09:35about
01:09:369.
01:09:37Yeah,
01:09:38that's good,
01:09:39another 10
01:09:40seconds.
01:09:41McLaren have
01:09:42made no indication
01:09:43that they're
01:09:44stopping at
01:09:45this point.
01:09:46No,
01:09:47Benetton's
01:09:48laid out.
01:09:49Oh,
01:09:50look at Mika
01:09:51Salo just
01:09:52out ahead of
01:09:53Eddie Irvine.
01:09:54Eddie was
01:09:55trying very
01:09:56hard to get
01:09:57out in front
01:09:58of him.
01:09:59Now we're
01:10:00going to see
01:10:01just what
01:10:02happens.
01:10:03Well,
01:10:04this is
01:10:05a long
01:10:06stop,
01:10:07fairly long,
01:10:0811 seconds.
01:10:09Not
01:10:10bad.
01:10:11And it
01:10:12looked like
01:10:13Wurz was in
01:10:14behind him,
01:10:15but I
01:10:16wouldn't sweat it.
01:10:17It looked
01:10:18like a blue
01:10:19car.
01:10:20It is,
01:10:21and he
01:10:22completes his
01:10:23stop at
01:10:24the same
01:10:25time.
01:10:26So it
01:10:27leaves the
01:10:28McLarens,
01:10:29which have
01:10:30not pitted,
01:10:31and all of
01:10:32this pitting,
01:10:33now that
01:10:34McLaren
01:10:35pit stops
01:10:36at the
01:10:37ready.
01:10:38Will it be
01:10:39Coulthard,
01:10:40who's 40
01:10:41seconds off
01:10:42the lead,
01:10:43or HÃ¥konen
01:10:44in first?
01:10:45Coulthard
01:10:46was in,
01:10:47of course,
01:10:48it'll be
01:10:49HÃ¥konen,
01:10:50because Coulthard
01:10:51was in at
01:10:52lap 10.
01:10:53They topped
01:10:54off the
01:10:55tanks when
01:10:56he replaced
01:10:57that front
01:10:58wing.
01:10:59And
01:11:00HÃ¥konen
01:11:01is in the
01:11:02pit lane,
01:11:04four wheels
01:11:05off the
01:11:06racetrack.
01:11:07I find
01:11:08that a bit
01:11:09unfair,
01:11:10but that's
01:11:11pretty tough
01:11:12on David.
01:11:13HÃ¥konen
01:11:14beat him
01:11:15by .4 of
01:11:16a second
01:11:17last year.
01:11:18He's
01:11:19going to
01:11:20beat him
01:11:21by 40
01:11:22seconds.
01:11:23Long
01:11:24stop for
01:11:25HÃ¥konen.
01:11:26What's
01:11:27wrong?
01:11:28Fuel
01:11:29did not
01:11:30go in.
01:11:31Oh,
01:11:32what a
01:11:33disaster for
01:11:34McLaren.
01:11:35And a penalty
01:11:36for David
01:11:37Coulthard as
01:11:38well,
01:11:39although he
01:11:40wasn't exactly
01:11:41featuring.
01:11:42We've got
01:11:43Ferraris in
01:11:44first and
01:11:45second place.
01:11:46Look at the
01:11:47crowds behind
01:11:48them.
01:11:49They're excited,
01:11:50but they
01:11:51love to see
01:11:52Ferraris
01:11:53first and
01:11:54second and
01:11:55Heinz our
01:11:56friends in
01:11:57third behind
01:11:58them.
01:11:59Well,
01:12:00some would,
01:12:01wow.
01:12:02So the
01:12:03Ferraris
01:12:04inherit
01:12:05the lead
01:12:06in the Grand
01:12:07Prix of
01:12:08Germany.
01:12:09Unpredictable
01:12:10as usual.
01:12:11We'll be
01:12:12right back.
01:12:13Flags
01:12:14waving in
01:12:15the grandstand
01:12:16here in the
01:12:17stadium.
01:12:18They're
01:12:19waving for
01:12:20the two
01:12:21Ferraris.
01:12:22Mika
01:12:23Salo
01:12:24and Eddie
01:12:25Irvine
01:12:26have come
01:12:27to the
01:12:28front due
01:12:29to an
01:12:30emergency.
01:12:31Is he going
01:12:32to let him
01:12:33by?
01:12:34Is he
01:12:35going to
01:12:36make it
01:12:37easy for
01:12:38him?
01:12:39No,
01:12:40he's not.
01:12:41Mika's
01:12:42going to
01:12:43have to
01:12:44wait his
01:12:45time until
01:12:46he's prepared
01:12:47to give
01:12:48him a little
01:12:49bit more
01:12:50than that.
01:12:51Remember,
01:12:52these cars
01:12:53have such
01:12:54similar
01:12:55power.
01:12:56Mika
01:12:57goes
01:12:58streaming
01:12:59to Eddie
01:13:00Irvine.
01:13:01Only time
01:13:02will tell.
01:13:03What a
01:13:04group.
01:13:05One,
01:13:06two,
01:13:07three,
01:13:08four,
01:13:09as you
01:13:10can see.
01:13:11And I
01:13:12think that's
01:13:13David
01:13:14Coulthard
01:13:15behind.
01:13:16And he's
01:13:17going to
01:13:18have to
01:13:19come in and
01:13:20serve that
01:13:21ten-second
01:13:22penalty.
01:13:23And
01:13:24Coulthard
01:13:25is going
01:13:26to need
01:13:27another
01:13:28penalty.
01:13:29Now,
01:13:30of course,
01:13:31let's hope that
01:13:32Salo does
01:13:33not hold
01:13:34Eddie Irvine.
01:13:35Oh,
01:13:36trouble.
01:13:37A shredded
01:13:38tire.
01:13:39Shredded
01:13:40tire.
01:13:41Look at
01:13:42that on
01:13:43the McLaren.
01:13:44Whoa,
01:13:45look at
01:13:46him go.
01:13:47Oh,
01:13:48he went
01:13:49in just
01:13:50like Michael
01:13:51Schumacher.
01:13:52Just like
01:13:53Michael did
01:13:54at Silverstone,
01:13:55but he had
01:13:56scrubbed
01:13:57the front
01:13:58tire.
01:13:59Not sure
01:14:00what has
01:14:01happened here.
01:14:02Let's put
01:14:03that car
01:14:04hard in
01:14:05the tire
01:14:06wall,
01:14:07and Mika's
01:14:08OK.
01:14:09Yeah,
01:14:10well,
01:14:11they got a
01:14:12lot more
01:14:13substantial
01:14:14tire wall
01:14:15there as he
01:14:16came out.
01:14:17He's
01:14:18lifting himself
01:14:19out of the
01:14:20car as
01:14:21David
01:14:22Coulthard
01:14:23comes in
01:14:24for a
01:14:25ten-second
01:14:26lead.
01:14:27210 miles
01:14:28an hour as
01:14:29he came down
01:14:30there,
01:14:31and it
01:14:32seemed to
01:14:33go.
01:14:34Look at
01:14:35that.
01:14:36What a
01:14:37lucky boy.
01:14:38What a
01:14:39lucky boy.
01:14:40Big cheer
01:14:41from the
01:14:42crowd as
01:14:43he is
01:14:44OK,
01:14:45but the
01:14:46left rear
01:14:47tire
01:14:48down,
01:14:49and looks
01:14:50like he
01:14:51may have
01:14:52banged an
01:14:53elbow or
01:14:54just shrugged
01:14:55it off.
01:14:56Oh dear,
01:14:57he's got the
01:14:58wheels pulled
01:14:59to the left.
01:15:00But very,
01:15:01very fortunate
01:15:02for Mika.
01:15:03Look at him
01:15:04go again.
01:15:05Look at him
01:15:06go.
01:15:07He gets on
01:15:08the grass.
01:15:09That wouldn't
01:15:10have slowed
01:15:11it down much.
01:15:12Just missed
01:15:13that wall,
01:15:14and he
01:15:15gets sideways,
01:15:16but you see
01:15:17these underneath
01:15:18of these
01:15:19cars,
01:15:20they're so
01:15:21flat that
01:15:22they actually
01:15:23ride like
01:15:24they're
01:15:25not
01:15:26going to
01:15:27be able
01:15:28to
01:15:29go
01:15:30through
01:15:31them.
01:15:32And
01:15:33that's
01:15:34what
01:15:35really
01:15:36broke
01:15:37Michael
01:15:38Schumacher's
01:15:39leg,
01:15:40is the
01:15:41car,
01:15:42the front
01:15:43of the
01:15:44car
01:15:45twisted.
01:15:46That
01:15:47leaves
01:15:48Ferrari's
01:15:49first and
01:15:50second
01:15:51very
01:15:52comfortably
01:15:53in
01:15:54second
01:15:55and
01:15:56third.
01:15:57I don't
01:15:58think
01:15:59Heinz can
01:16:00do much
01:16:01about these
01:16:02two Ferraris.
01:16:03And if
01:16:04Eddie Irvine
01:16:05should win
01:16:06this race
01:16:07and score his
01:16:08second victory
01:16:09in a row,
01:16:10I don't
01:16:11think there's
01:16:12enough stock
01:16:13of newsprint
01:16:14in the
01:16:15world to
01:16:16hold it
01:16:17all.
01:16:18Look at
01:16:19Ralph Schumacher
01:16:20in fourth
01:16:21place.
01:16:22He's
01:16:23not
01:16:24totally
01:16:25underpowered
01:16:26and really
01:16:27not in a
01:16:28good car
01:16:29at all.
01:16:30Well,
01:16:31they'll be
01:16:32telling these
01:16:33two guys to
01:16:34call it now
01:16:35and they
01:16:36will have
01:16:37told Sarlo
01:16:38to take it
01:16:39easy,
01:16:40do not
01:16:41overtake
01:16:42Eddie,
01:16:43because there's
01:16:44no advantage
01:16:45for
01:16:46Mika Sarlo
01:16:47winning
01:16:48apart from
01:16:49Mika Sarlo's
01:16:50benefit.
01:16:51But they're
01:16:52here in
01:16:53Germany
01:16:54and well,
01:16:55they were
01:16:56asked,
01:16:57well,
01:16:58what are
01:16:59you doing
01:17:00here?
01:17:01And they
01:17:02said,
01:17:03well,
01:17:04Ron Dennis,
01:17:05the McLaren
01:17:06team manager,
01:17:07paid for us
01:17:08to be here
01:17:09because maybe
01:17:10it'll bring
01:17:11Eddie some
01:17:12bad luck.
01:17:13They were
01:17:14kidding around.
01:17:15Absolutely.
01:17:16Going back
01:17:17to Ralph Schumacher,
01:17:18just have to
01:17:19say he's
01:17:20done a
01:17:21really
01:17:22excellent
01:17:23job he's
01:17:24done in
01:17:25that car.
01:17:26But there's
01:17:27nothing you
01:17:28can do
01:17:29about a
01:17:30tire when
01:17:31it
01:17:32delaminates,
01:17:33basically.
01:17:34So here's
01:17:35Irvine in
01:17:36front of
01:17:37Sarlo
01:17:38and the
01:17:39German
01:17:40director was
01:17:41in replays
01:17:42and it's
01:17:43a good time
01:17:44to tell you
01:17:45we've got a
01:17:46lot of
01:17:47emails asking
01:17:48for more
01:17:49from
01:17:50the
01:17:51German
01:17:52director.
01:17:53We're
01:17:54trying to
01:17:55get
01:17:56confirmed
01:17:57from
01:17:58Peter whether
01:17:59or not
01:18:00Sarlo was
01:18:01asked to
01:18:02move aside
01:18:03for Eddie
01:18:04Irvine.
01:18:05Yeah,
01:18:06I wouldn't
01:18:07have thought
01:18:08about
01:18:09that.
01:18:10I
01:18:11think
01:18:12it's
01:18:13a good
01:18:14time to
01:18:15tell you
01:18:16we've
01:18:17got a
01:18:18lot of
01:18:19emails asking
01:18:20for more
01:18:21from
01:18:22Peter whether
01:18:23or not
01:18:24Sarlo was
01:18:25asked to
01:18:26move aside
01:18:27for Eddie
01:18:28Irvine.
01:18:29Yeah,
01:18:30I
01:18:31wouldn't
01:18:32have
01:18:33thought
01:18:34quite that
01:18:35soon.
01:18:36I
01:18:37would have
01:18:38thought he
01:18:39would have
01:18:40done at
01:18:41some point
01:18:42during the
01:18:43race to
01:18:44let it
01:18:45pan out
01:18:46a little
01:18:47bit.
01:18:48I
01:18:49think
01:18:50it's

01:19:01or not
01:19:02Sarlo was
01:19:03asked to
01:19:04move aside
01:19:05for Eddie
01:19:06Irvine.
01:19:07Yeah,
01:19:08I
01:19:09would have
01:19:10thought he
01:19:11would have
01:19:12done at
01:19:13some point
01:19:14during the
01:19:15race to
01:19:16let it
01:19:17pan out a
01:19:18little bit.
01:19:19I
01:19:20think
01:19:21it's
