Round 9 of the 1999 F1 season at the A1 Ring.
Transcript
00:00:00Hello, everyone.
00:00:01I'm Mike Joy alongside five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell and in the pits from the London
00:00:07Sunday Times and F1 Racing Magazine is Peter Windsor.
00:00:12Ferrari is out on course for reconnaissance laps.
00:00:15Eddie Irvine comes in after a lap.
00:00:17He will be teamed today with Mika Salo.
00:00:20Well, the driver's championship, let's have a look at how it stacks up with Mika Hocken
00:00:25and the world champion.
00:00:26Eight points ahead.
00:00:27Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine.
00:00:29More on Schumacher in a moment.
00:00:30Heinz-Harold Frentzen, David Coulthard and Ralph Schumacher are the top half dozen and
00:00:35all within striking distance after eight races.
00:00:39The constructor's chase is much closer.
00:00:41Ferrari with just a two-point lead over McLaren, then Jordan, Williams, Benetton and Stewart.
00:00:49The big news this week, Michael Schumacher after that devastating crash in Britain two
00:00:53weeks ago.
00:00:54Peter has more.
00:00:57Like all accidents, Michael Schumacher's was a combination of circumstances, some big,
00:01:02some small.
00:01:03His Ferrari hit the tire wall at Silverstone when, for reasons yet to be determined, the
00:01:07rear brakes failed.
00:01:08Michael was braking hard and was turning into Stowe Corner when fluid poured from a valve
00:01:13on the left rear brake caliper.
00:01:15After that, Schumacher was virtually a passenger.
00:01:18Like most corners, Stowe is protected by a tire wall, although in this case, the tires
00:01:22were not tethered by a belt.
00:01:24Had they been so, the Ferrari might have slid sideways along them and Schumacher might not
00:01:28have been injured.
00:01:29As it was, the nose of the car dug in between the tires and the sideways force split the
00:01:34chassis, breaking Michael's right leg.
00:01:37The irony, however, is that the race had been stopped by this point due to two cars stalling
00:01:41on the grid.
00:01:42McLaren, for example, were able to radio to their drivers as they headed down Hangar Straight
00:01:47before Stowe Corner and both Hakkinen and Coulthard backed off.
00:01:52Schumacher was not so lucky because Ferrari were only able to warn him literally three
00:01:56seconds before he left the road, probably because their key personnel were still crossing
00:02:00from the garage area where the monitors are habitually tuned to the picture channel rather
00:02:04than the data channel, up to the pit wall.
00:02:07Had Schumacher known only a few seconds earlier, then the brake failure might not have had
00:02:12such a serious result.
00:02:13Well, sadly, it shows that, of course, with all these safety modifications these days,
00:02:18accidents still happen and people still get hurt.
00:02:21And four drivers have been hurt already in the first half of this season.
00:02:24There's world champion Mika Hakkinen out and David Coulthard coming back in after a reconnaissance
00:02:29lap of the circuit.
00:02:31Well, aside from Schumacher, there's lots more news to catch you up on from the last
00:02:35two weeks.
00:02:36Let's go back to Peter Windsor down in the pit lane.
00:02:40Well, the phone call that Mika Salah has been waiting for for most of his life came just
00:02:45after the British Grand Prix.
00:02:46Would he please make himself available to test a Ferrari Grand Prix car at Fiorano?
00:02:51Guess what?
00:02:52Mika had to refuse.
00:02:53He was scheduled to get married to his girlfriend Noriko in Helsinki.
00:02:55He did, of course, test at Fiorano the following week, but very good alongside Eddie Irvine.
00:03:00Didn't match Eddie's times exactly, but almost there.
00:03:02Meanwhile, at Monza, Eddie then showed that this is a great time to be joining Ferrari.
00:03:06A new aero package on the car, a new rear wing, new underbody has given a lot more downforce,
00:03:11no loss in top speed.
00:03:12And Ferrari, Schumacher's accidents aside, are actually very, very confident today.
00:03:17At Jordan, Australian Mark Webber has been invited to test.
00:03:20Mark made his name driving in sports cars in Formula 3.
00:03:23He's done a very good job for Mercedes, suffered those two spectacular accidents at Le Mans,
00:03:26but he's been invited to test for Jordan as a possible Damon Hill replacement in the year
00:03:312000.
00:03:32Jordan's still looking for a named driver, but if they can't secure that name, look for
00:03:35Mark Webber alongside Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:03:37And at Sauber, Tim Preston, the Williams engineer, done a very good job there for the last 18
00:03:41months, left suddenly last week.
00:03:44No news from Sauber as to why that's happened, but that is a loss for the team.
00:03:47Tim was a very talented guy.
00:03:48We'll wait and see what happens there.
00:03:50Back to you.
00:03:51It certainly would be wonderful if Webber did go as an Australian to drive in Formula
00:03:541.
00:03:55It would be magnificent.
00:03:56He used to work for Jordan.
00:03:57It's been a while.
00:03:58What, Alan Jones, you were saying, was the last?
00:03:59Yeah, I think he was.
00:04:00To drive in Formula 1.
00:04:01A lot of activity in the pits and along the grid, and Alexander Wurtz in the Benetton,
00:04:08out for one of his reconnaissance laps here.
00:04:12Well, the man everyone will watch with great expectation is Mika Salo.
00:04:17This is the breakthrough of his career.
00:04:19Will he make the most of it?
00:04:21It's unfortunate what happened to Michael.
00:04:25I'm really honored to be replacing him, and I try to do a good job, and when he's ready
00:04:31to come back, I hope he will be proud of what I've done, so hopefully I can take as many
00:04:36as possible points off my parents.
00:04:38Well, I tell you, to sit there in a Formula 1 Ferrari for the very first time with that
00:04:42prancing horse on the steering wheel is something very, very special.
00:04:46What kind of emotions are going through Mika Salo right now?
00:04:48Well, I mean, sitting out on the grid, it's very, very special for him.
00:04:51In Austria, which is very close to Italy, for Ferrari, I mean, anybody that drives Ferrari,
00:04:55it's a very, very special experience.
00:04:57Well, let's hope he makes the most of it as we look at the onboard camera from Heinz-Harald
00:05:00Frentzen.
00:05:01We'll have a recap of qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix next, but this Monday in Great
00:05:06Britain, a number of Formula 1 luminaries participated in a charity golf tournament.
00:05:11Among them, Jackie Stewart teeing it up, Eddie Jordan playing from the beach, David Coulthard
00:05:18and Mika Hakkinen.
00:05:23Welcome back to our Toyota pre-race coverage for the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:05:26Johnny Herbert takes off the helmet, slaps on the sponsor cap and gets set to do a few
00:05:31interviews along the pit lane.
00:05:34Here at Spielberg, Derek, drag strip straightaways, lots of elevation change up and downhill and
00:05:39some sharp corners.
00:05:40Yes, 2.68 miles and a lovely circuit, a shadow of its former self, in fact.
00:05:46It was a wonderful circuit, but in fact, there's always been quite a lot of interesting
00:05:49races here at this new circuit.
00:05:51So let's take a ride now with Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:05:54We're streaming down past the pits, 185 miles an hour plus.
00:05:59It goes uphill, bumpy into this section as we go into the Kastrol kerb.
00:06:04They take the car very wide out there and again, you can see us working our way uphill
00:06:08towards these beautiful Styrian hills as we go up there.
00:06:11You actually run a car with a high downforce setup, but a moderately soft mechanically.
00:06:17Down to second gear, again trying to get traction, listen, as he comes out, gets some wheel spin
00:06:21as he comes out.
00:06:22They do ride the kerbs a lot, they got the FIA kerbs, it allows you to ride those kerbs
00:06:26very, very well indeed.
00:06:28Again, he's pulling a lot of speed, 185 miles an hour, very high speed straights, down into
00:06:33a third gear corner, putting only 70 miles an hour at the slowest point.
00:06:37I was running here in a Ferrari about two months ago and it's the most beautifully flowing
00:06:41This corner here drops away a little bit.
00:06:44This is the first part of the Niki Lauda kerb and it drops away as he goes down to the Pajos
00:06:48kerb.
00:06:49Virtually one long, long kerb, but as you come out, you don't want to go out too wide
00:06:52too soon because you can't get onto this next section, which leads you down to the Jochen
00:06:56Rindt kerb, pulling up to 180 miles an hour.
00:06:59You pop over the top, down two gears, flick it through and you hear him drop down yet
00:07:02another gear as he comes down to the all-important A1 kerb, which takes him on.
00:07:07We just passed the pit entry, by the way, go by the pits.
00:07:09That was a lap.
00:07:10A lot of high speed, a lot of acceleration, a lot of flat out running and a lot of heavy
00:07:16braking.
00:07:17As we watch Eddie Irvine, the mechanics making adjustments on his Ferrari, and we saw a moment
00:07:23ago a big crush of media surrounding Mika Salo as Irvine gets set to go back out for
00:07:29another lap of the circuit.
00:07:32Let's have a look at the highlights of qualifying.
00:07:33Could anybody topple the McLaren-Mercedes domination of qualifying?
00:07:38Look at this beautiful area.
00:07:39We're set in the Styrian mountains in sort of eastern Austria, the most beautiful area,
00:07:43not far from Salzburg.
00:07:44Mika Hakkinen looking for his seventh pole position of the year.
00:07:48Everybody thought he would do it.
00:07:49He's right there, but it's Mika Salo that went out in the beginning.
00:07:51His first run with Ferrari gets fastest time early on in the session.
00:07:56Mika Hakkinen wasn't going to be long before he went out, but he wasn't long before he
00:07:59stopped either.
00:08:00His engine stopped with a fuel pump problem.
00:08:02He nips back and gets the spare, but it's Rubens Barrichello that goes out and he chose
00:08:06to Ford.
00:08:07The Ford is still very, very fast indeed, and then it was Heinz Alfrenz and he goes
00:08:11out in the Jordan to show yet again that Mugen Honda engine, boy, does it have some power.
00:08:16But it was Mika Hakkinen in the spare car, he says, whatever you give me, I'll get pole
00:08:19for you.
00:08:20And he goes out.
00:08:21Eddie Irvine's having a go.
00:08:23He's really, really trying to emulate Michael Schumacher and look at that control, a bit
00:08:27of Schumacher there.
00:08:29No wonder they call him Eddie.
00:08:30However, here we go.
00:08:32David Cordell's trying as well to get pole position.
00:08:34He does, he gets fastest, but look at one of the 35 people that went off the road during
00:08:40the weekend.
00:08:41Riccardo Zonta, he has a moment here as we watch in slow motion as he goes off the road
00:08:45trying to get some traction on the grass, but it was that man Mika Hakkinen goes through
00:08:49to get his seventh pole of the year.
00:08:52So let's go down and just sort of hear what Eddie Irvine had to say at the press conference
00:08:56following the session.
00:08:58Very underperformed, to be honest, we should have done 11.5, get our T's up, but the brakes
00:09:07were just, I couldn't use the brakes, and if I tried to use them, I'd lock the rears
00:09:11or lock the fronts, and that's basically where I lost all the time from this morning.
00:09:15Well, it's never easy to replace a world champion, Mika Salo talks to Peter Windsor.
00:09:20Not an easy job standing in for Michael, but you must be very pleased with the way things
00:09:23have gone, Mika.
00:09:24Yeah, I'm happy.
00:09:26It's not a very easy circuit to come, because it's very short and there's no corners.
00:09:31It's just lap times was really close now, and two tenths would have put me up to fourth,
00:09:36and if I was two tenths lower, it would have put me up to fifteenth, so I'm sort of okay
00:09:40there.
00:09:43A look at work continuing on the pre-grade here.
00:09:47One of the Williams, Williams losing their sponsor, Winfield, for next year.
00:09:51Cigarette company will not be back.
00:09:52No, they won't be back.
00:09:53Because, you know, BMW didn't want that, because BMW wants to be squeaky clean and have BMW
00:09:57over all of the car.
00:09:58That's what it'll look like with Ralf Schumacher standing there as one of the team drivers.
00:10:03Well, everyone anticipates Michael Schumacher's recovery and return, which could come this
00:10:08season, and we may get a little bit of engineering help for Schumacher's eventual return.
00:10:15If Michael Schumacher is to return to Formula One sooner than expected, and that is a very
00:10:19big if, he might be helped in that cause by the latest in Formula One fly-by-wire technology
00:10:24and be given a hand throttle.
00:10:26How would that look in the car?
00:10:27Well, in the footwell area, probably they would have a foot clutch left of a large left
00:10:33foot brake.
00:10:34He would use the left foot for both clutch and the brake, and the clutch, of course,
00:10:37is only used for the start and for leaving the pit lane after pit stops, and on the steering
00:10:41wheel, he'd have the hand throttle and the hand gear change.
00:10:44Schumacher certainly would have the coordination to do that, providing, of course, he could
00:10:47practice a little bit.
00:10:48Whether he's fit enough to be able to come back sooner remains to be seen.
00:10:51Back to you.
00:10:52Well, I think Michael's accident was worse than we thought, and I think he's going to
00:10:55be very stupid if he comes back too soon.
00:10:57He's never going to win the championship anyway, this year.
00:10:59Not this year.
00:11:00No, certainly not.
00:11:01We'll be back with highlights of the British Grand Prix and our countdown to Indy.
00:11:04But first, like the shield of medieval knights, a Formula One driver's identity is on his
00:11:10helmet.
00:11:11Here's John Olasek.
00:11:13It was because I was a Formula 3 driver, and when I was doing a race, on the radio I heard
00:11:22a Formula One driver died, Elio De Angelis, and I was so shocked.
00:11:28I decided to take his colour, because for a driver, colour is like a country, a flag,
00:11:33you know?
00:11:34And I said, I don't want this driver to be all the time out of the racing, so I take
00:11:38his colour.
00:11:39So I put blue here, like it was, and then this black and red line, and everything was
00:11:46white.
00:11:47And then I put this rain impact, because I love so much the rain, I say I want to have
00:11:56all the time the rain with me, so I put all the time this new design on the top of it.
00:12:03And then I arrived with this chrome, because it's an American company, actually, who designed
00:12:09my helmet, and they bring me this idea, and I thought it was a very good idea.
00:12:20Welcome back to our Toyota pre-race coverage of the Grand Prix of Austria, just outside
00:12:25of Spielberg.
00:12:26A lot of heavy clouds this morning now, a bit of blue sky, 65 degree temperature, the
00:12:31track is 74, heavy humidity, 70%, 30% chance of rain.
00:12:36We'd appreciate hearing your comments about our Fox Sports Net Formula 1 broadcast.
00:12:40You can email us, formula1 at foxsports.net.
00:12:44We can't promise to respond to all, but we do read every single one.
00:12:48Now, our next Formula 1 telecast is not in two weeks' time.
00:12:52It's coming right up.
00:12:53Sunday, August 1st, the Grand Prix of Germany, also in August, will be in Hungary and Belgium,
00:12:58September at Italy in the Nürburgring, and October, Malaysia and Japan, here on Fox Sports
00:13:03Net.
00:13:04Most of these will all be 10 a.m.
00:13:05Starcher local time, except for the Grand Prix of Japan live.
00:13:10Most beautiful scene here of this choir in Austria singing before a Grand Prix.
00:13:15What a change from the usual bugles and fanfare we get.
00:13:19A nice calm moment before things unleash here.
00:13:22Let's have a look at some of the highlights, Derek, of the British Grand Prix two weeks
00:13:25ago.
00:13:26That was certainly a dramatic British Grand Prix, the most dramatic of the year.
00:13:29Mika Häkkinen was looking for his fifth win of the year to consolidate his place in the
00:13:32lead of the World Championship at the start.
00:13:34He led away from Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard.
00:13:36Michael had a poor start, and in fact, two cars stopped on the grid back there.
00:13:40It was Eddie Irvine that's streaked by Michael Schumacher at the first turn.
00:13:44And here we are as they go down to Stoke Corner.
00:13:46Michael locking everything up, well, at least only the front's up, sadly.
00:13:49And that was a very, very poignant part for the rest of the year.
00:13:53Michael waving to the crowds as he's taken away on a stretch to show that he's still
00:13:56there.
00:13:57All right, boys.
00:13:58Rather sad, empty spot on the front road.
00:14:00The Jordan of Heinshorn-Frentzen tries to break through at the start.
00:14:03But poor Mika Häkkinen comes in for a very long stop.
00:14:05They cannot get that left rear wheel on properly.
00:14:07A few laps later, he's back in again.
00:14:09There's still a problem with that left rear wheel.
00:14:11There's nothing worse on a right-angled circuit to have that problem.
00:14:15That leaves David Coulthard and Eddie Irvine out there duking it out for the victory.
00:14:19Poor Mika Häkkinen's wheel finally gives up, says, I've had enough of this.
00:14:22I'm over the bank.
00:14:23Let's go down and let's listen to what David Coulthard had to say after this victorious
00:14:28moment for him.
00:14:31This is definitely the best feeling I've ever had in my racing career.
00:14:35To win this race, I think, always has been the one that I would trade for any other win
00:14:42to win in the British Grand Prix.
00:14:47Pre-race activity continues.
00:14:48It was nice to hear the Vienna boys' choir.
00:14:50But I wonder, September 24th, 2000, if we'll be hearing back home again in Indiana
00:14:55as preparations continue for the U.S. Grand Prix to return to the United States,
00:15:00Indianapolis, September 24th, 2000.
00:15:04Derek Bell and track engineer Kevin Forbes take again a look at the circuit.
00:15:10This time, we'll concentrate down in turn two of the oval with turns 11, 12, and 13
00:15:15of the Formula 1 course.
00:15:16We're coming out of turn 11 into 12, and it strikes me that 12 is really a flat-out
00:15:19corner that leads out onto the first part of the oval, L.C., and then into turn 13.
00:15:25That's exactly right, Derek.
00:15:26And this is the place on the racetrack where we really wanted to try to add some excitement,
00:15:31some acceleration that starts right here, goes all the way to the entrance of turn one,
00:15:35which means that they are under acceleration for over a mile.
00:15:39And this is also a good place to do that because we have all these grandstands right here.
00:15:44We've got the very first hospitality suites that we've erected here.
00:15:47So we've put this kind of exciting corner right in front of all these people right here.
00:15:51Well, let's go down to turn 13 and have a look at a little bit of the angle of the banking.
00:15:55So they come out of turn 12 through turn 13, the first bit of bank circuit they'll have been on,
00:16:00and they're going to go flat out from here right the way down the main straight to turn one.
00:16:04Yeah, that's right, Derek.
00:16:05And this is the area that gives us our signature.
00:16:08This is, you know, like Spa and Nurburgring, those signature Formula 1 tracks, Monaco, all those.
00:16:14This is our ability now to put a signature to our track.
00:16:17We don't have the opportunity to develop large elevation changes,
00:16:22but we do have a corner of the road course that's banked at over nine degrees,
00:16:26and no other current Formula 1 track has that right now.
00:16:29I just can't wait to see just how the Formula 1 teams make out with setting up their cars for this sort of a circuit.
00:16:34No, I think it will be very interesting, Derek.
00:16:36Well, I'm looking forward very much to the 24th of September in the year 2000.
00:16:40Thanks very much for your help today, Kevin.
00:16:41Thank you, Derek, and I'm certainly looking forward to it as well.
00:16:44Thank you.
00:16:46Well, that completes our look at the Indianapolis Formula 1 circuit.
00:16:49If you'd like information on tickets for the United States Grand Prix, 1-800-822-4639,
00:16:56or e-mail the Speedway, tickets at brickyard.com is the e-mail address.
00:17:03Hi, it's Harold Frentzen getting set to strap in for today's Grand Prix of Austria as our Toyota pre-race continues.
00:17:09Coming up next, we'll go Formula 1-on-1 with Stewart driver Rubens Barrichello.
00:17:17Well, in many parts of the world, farmers mark their sheep with a small spot of color.
00:17:23The Benetton folks, of course, do it just a little differently.
00:17:27That is watercolor paint, as the farmers on the phone ordering more.
00:17:33The Grand Prix of Austria on Fox Sportsnet is brought to you by Toyota.
00:17:37Every day belongs to you. Make it count. Toyota, every day.
00:17:44Welcome back to the Grand Prix of Austria, where the talk is not only of Ferrari's challenge for the championship without Michael Schumacher,
00:17:51but also of Rubens Barrichello, a driver of the future and a man in demand.
00:17:56I asked him if it was difficult to concentrate on the job at hand when there were rumors circulating of Rubens joining both Ferrari and McLaren.
00:18:05I've learned from the past. I used to have kind of a problem in 94.
00:18:10It was just my second year in Formula 1, and I had contacts with McLaren, and then it drove me a bit out of control.
00:18:17But on these days, I mean, as a professional, I must talk to people, but it's not upsetting my concentration at all.
00:18:26You've just been back to Brazil. Can you tell us a bit about your life there, how you relax at home?
00:18:30Well, it was nice to be there just to see my family, to see my granddad, and to play bowling with them.
00:18:38It was just to be... I like to act natural, and I had a week like when I was in school.
00:18:45It was doing my exercises in the morning and then relaxing in the afternoon.
00:18:49It was very nice to watch a little bit of TV at home, to see a bit of Portuguese. It was just nice to be there.
00:18:55You're at the sharp edge of Ford's commitment to Formula 1. How does that feel?
00:19:00It feels very good, because you can see that what they say on the magazines or TV, it's true.
00:19:07They're really, really putting a lot of effort, a lot of money onto next year's engine, and this year's engine is already good.
00:19:15I mean, we are halfway through the season. They develop a new exhaust. They develop new internals.
00:19:21The engine is doing better, and next year things look really bright.
00:19:27Obviously, you have ambitions as a racing driver. Is there anything else you ever want to achieve?
00:19:31We work in Formula 1 with a lot of Gs, and I like to be an astronaut. I would love to have a chance to go to the moon. It's a fantastic idea.
00:19:43Thank you very much, Rubens.
00:19:44Thank you.
00:19:46Suddenly a potential world champion, Rubens Barrichello, and a potential moonwalker. Back to you.
00:19:52I don't know if they're brave or stupid, some of these guys.
00:19:55Oh, it would be fun to be an astronaut.
00:19:57You've got no control over where you're going. That's the problem.
00:19:59Oh, that's right. Drivers have to be in control.
00:20:01That's right.
00:20:02Well, McLaren and Mercedes reverted to their 1998 steering system, front brakes and suspension for this race.
00:20:09Let's have a look at the starting lineup, and we'll see that they were rewarded with the front row.
00:20:14Mika Hakkinen with his 7th pole this year and 17th in his career.
00:20:18Yes, David Coulthard still trying to get up there and pick Mika, not doing too good a job yet.
00:20:23Eddie Irvine will start 3rd, breaking problems during the qualifying session.
00:20:27Minds over friends, and still doing an excellent job for Jordan right up there at the front.
00:20:31Rubens Barrichello, well pleased to be 5th on the grid with his Stewart Ford, new engine there.
00:20:36And a great run from Johnny Herbert, must be contract time.
00:20:39Mika Salo will line up 7th. He went wide on what would have been his fast lap down in Turn 1, and so he'll end up 7th.
00:20:46Ralph Schumacher, again doing a fine job in the Winfield-Williams.
00:20:50Jacques Villeneuve, also lots of yellow flags on his last run, so he will settle for 9th, but he was 3rd in this morning's practice.
00:20:56Alexander Wirtz doing a splendid job here on his home circuit.
00:20:59Damon Hill struggled to find the balance. He was fastest in Friday practice, but winds up well down the grid 11th.
00:21:06I'm sure when Giancarlo Fisichella was on pole last year, he didn't think he'd be at 12th this year.
00:21:10Certainly not. Jarno Trulli will line up 13th for Prost.
00:21:13And Zanardi, 1.6 seconds, still separates him from Ralph Schumacher.
00:21:17Riccardo Zonta ended up in the gravel trap on his final run. He'll be 15th for BAR.
00:21:22And Pedro Diniz, no balance on the Sauber, puts him 16th.
00:21:26John Alesi, engine problems, had to make his third run in the spare car.
00:21:30Olivier Peni in the second Prost. Luca Badauer, the fastest of the minorities, back at 19th.
00:21:36The Indieros, Tora Takagi and Pedro de la Rosa, 20th and 21st.
00:21:40Marc Genet, 22nd in the second minority. That's the way they'll line up for the Grand Prix of Austria today.
00:21:51So closing down on the end of our Toyota pre-race, Mika Hakkinen.
00:21:57Getting set to go as we'll be back with the formation lap and the start of the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:22:03You're watching Formula 1 on Fox Sportsnet.
00:22:15Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage of Formula 1 World Championship Racing.
00:22:19There is Mika Hakkinen, the world champion, who lines up from the pole position today.
00:22:26Well, Derek, last year's start to this race was an abortive one.
00:22:29Yeah, well, of course, we had an unusual grid last year because we had Alesi and Visi Keller on the front row of the grid
00:22:35following a wet qualifying session. These two always seem to be at the front when it's in the wet.
00:22:39It's Mika Hakkinen nipped through to get a good start.
00:22:42But as you can see down the inside as they come into turn one.
00:22:46And then a bit of mayhem behind them as we believe it was Tora Takagi.
00:22:50And the Tyrrell goes nailing through and takes off three, four guys at the end of the grid.
00:22:54And then he got to turn two up to Castrol.
00:22:56And this time it's Mika Salo touches his teammate and takes out David Coulthard into the bargain.
00:23:01Poor David dropped back to 14th place through that, then came through on a stirring drive nonetheless.
00:23:09So we're back now live. The formation lap is underway.
00:23:15From Alexander Wurz, that view.
00:23:18Must point out, though, that Hakkinen went on to win that race.
00:23:21Despite Michael Schumacher's attentions, Michael had some pretty lurid moments, flew off the road and destroyed the wing.
00:23:26We're riding now with Heinz-Arnold Frenzen on his first lap as he goes up to the Remus.
00:23:32Right-handle hairpin, as it were. Slowest part of the circuit, really.
00:23:38Looks like a flare there at the side of the track.
00:23:40Yeah, looks like part of the air display we just saw.
00:23:43Now, it could be one or two pit stops.
00:23:45All the guys really are on the softer compound tyre, which means they probably will opt for two stops.
00:23:50These tyres will go on, but of course it depends on how much fuel they run at the beginning.
00:23:54Zanardi is the only one on the medium, which is the harder of the two compounds.
00:23:58And passing is possible into turn two and, of course, into turn three.
00:24:03It is a circuit that passing can take place.
00:24:05Well, everybody said it never would be, but it happens.
00:24:08For some reason or other, I think it's just the fact that the circuit is very wide and lends itself to that
00:24:13because it's breaking into uphill turns, which allows you to brake much deeper.
00:24:17Well, today is the ninth race of the season.
00:24:19Let's recap the two lead contenders for the world championship at the midpoint
00:24:23and see how things have flip-flopped.
00:24:25In the first four races, Ferrari 44 points, McLaren only 20.
00:24:29In the last four races, that number has been almost identically reversed.
00:24:34Ferrari leads by two, with Schumacher gone.
00:24:38How can Eddie Irvine and Mika Salo put up enough points on the board to hold that lead?
00:24:43We'll see.
00:24:46Heating and cleaning tires as they come around to form the grid.
00:24:51Sorry, Mike, but what a beautiful setting.
00:24:53Look at that shot back up through there as they come into the Jochenrind curve.
00:24:56They're working their way down onto the grid.
00:24:59What a gorgeous racetrack.
00:25:01Now, the interesting thing here, to me, is the fact is,
00:25:04what will happen if David Coulthard does get a cracking start and gets ahead of Mika Häkkinen?
00:25:08Will there be team orders because of the world championship points at the moment,
00:25:11and how is Eddie Irvine going to go, and how is Mika Salo going to go?
00:25:15Remember, there's a lot of rivalry.
00:25:17In fact, Häkkinen and Salo, both Finns, do not talk to any great degree.
00:25:21This actually goes back to earlier days when they were in F3.
00:25:24Coulthard, as you point out, is 18 points behind Mika Häkkinen.
00:25:29In the driver's championship, there's Coulthard in fifth,
00:25:32his win in Britain lifting him up to 22 points.
00:25:38So, we get set for the start of the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:25:41There is your pole sitter Häkkinen.
00:25:43McLaren Mercedes fill the front row.
00:25:59Oh!
00:26:03Yellow flags waving at the back.
00:26:05Good clean start, and they're four wide coming down.
00:26:08But it's Mika Häkkinen keeps in there.
00:26:10Eddie Irvine having a good run, making it a bit tight for David Coulthard,
00:26:13but Eddie might have a good run, shooting up the hill.
00:26:15Very close between the arrows at the back there, one of the Bernardes.
00:26:18My goodness, that was a close move.
00:26:20Rather reminiscent of last year's start.
00:26:22Heinz-Harald Frenzen got caught out by Raquel O'Gonnell.
00:26:25Now, he's under pressure from Johnny Herbert in the second steward.
00:26:28Ah, but Frenzen holds the spot.
00:26:30Oh, somebody went off, one of McLaren's.
00:26:32I think that might be Mika Häkkinen that's gone backwards off the road.
00:26:35No, it's Coulthard. Excuse me.
00:26:37It's Mika Häkkinen.
00:26:38It is Häkkinen.
00:26:40No, I thought so. I heard the revs as he went round,
00:26:42and I thought, my goodness, here he goes.
00:26:44Look at Urjo, which is Mika Häkkinen's wife, looking very concerned there,
00:26:49wondering what had happened, because she's watching on the screen like we are.
00:26:55Here we go again.
00:26:56There's another shot of it as they come into the corner.
00:26:58Remember, Mika's on the left, and David is going to touch him.
00:27:01David touches him. He touches his teammate.
00:27:03Oh, my goodness, the contract time.
00:27:05That is not good, and Eddie Irvine, he gets into trouble as well.
00:27:08He loses second place, and Barry Keller goes through,
00:27:10and he'll probably get overtaken by the Jordan as well.
00:27:12No, he doesn't. He manages to stay there.
00:27:14The Jordan is fourth.
00:27:16Well, Eddie was just in the wrong spot.
00:27:18There was Häkkinen's car blocking the high lane,
00:27:20and he loses second position to the steward.
00:27:23Well, that's life, I bet.
00:27:24The most important thing is he didn't tangle with him and get put out of the race,
00:27:27which could have so easily happened if he hadn't have been so cautious.
00:27:30Well, it answers the question on team orders.
00:27:32Apparently, there were none between the two McLaren drivers,
00:27:34but after that incident, there may well be team orders next time around.
00:27:39Look at the three abreast as they come down in there.
00:27:41That was Zonta having a real looking down the inside there as they come down.
00:27:47Now, look at Eddie. He's all over the back.
00:27:48Remember, Rubens Barry Keller doing a super job in second place.
00:27:51He really profited from that move.
00:27:54Look at Mika Sarlo's come up.
00:27:56He's got through the mayhem as well.
00:27:57Norbert Haug of Mercedes checking the computer here with Air here
00:28:01just to see just what's happened to Mika.
00:28:03Is Mika coming in?
00:28:05Looks like one of the Fords is in already.
00:28:07That would be Johnny Herbert.
00:28:10Must have been some contact there.
00:28:13Oh, look at them.
00:28:14Oh, it's sideways as they went into there.
00:28:16See, these are downhill corners,
00:28:17and sometimes it's very difficult to get the car under control.
00:28:20If you're slightly turning with the brakes on,
00:28:22out goes the tail because you're dropping downhill into the corner.
00:28:26That was Zonta and Wurz battling.
00:28:28Now, Haakonen is still on course.
00:28:31He is in last position.
00:28:34Well, we've seen him drive from worse positions than that.
00:28:36He had that stunning drive in the French Grand Prix
00:28:38from 14th place on the grid.
00:28:40A great drive as we watched.
00:28:42First big shot we've had of Mika Sarlo driving.
00:28:46Mika's really got to drive a sensible, clean race.
00:28:48He just needs to get some points for Ferrari for the Constructors' Championship.
00:28:51No expecting fireworks just yet from him.
00:28:53Haakonen completed the first lap six seconds off the lead of Coulthard.
00:28:57I must say, the front of Mika Sarlo's car is damaged.
00:29:00Look at that, and I was right.
00:29:01I saw the wing was damaged on the front of his car,
00:29:03and I saw some debris coming off as he came up to that turn,
00:29:05which means he was involved in a melee back there,
00:29:07and he's coming in for a new nose section at Ferrari.
00:29:10Here he is, look.
00:29:11He's all tilted down to the right-hand side.
00:29:14So, Sarlo in fifth place behind Frentzen.
00:29:17Here's Coulthard, the leader.
00:29:18Barrichello, Irvine, Frentzen, Sarlo, and Jacques Villeneuve have come up for sixth.
00:29:23And Herbert's car has been...
00:29:24Johnny Herbert's car has been pushed in the garage,
00:29:26which is very, very sad for Johnny and, of course, for the whole team,
00:29:28but for Johnny, he's been getting a lot of flack lately for not performing that well,
00:29:32and will this be his last season?
00:29:34And there he was, right beside Barrichello on the grid,
00:29:36proving he can do it, and there he is out already.
00:29:38Remember, they're running the new Series 3 version of this Ford engine at this race.
00:29:43Herbert got a good start, was equal to Frentzen,
00:29:45entering the first corner and challenged him at turn two,
00:29:47but out of the race after one lap.
00:29:50Sarlo is actually doing quite a good job,
00:29:52but I don't think he can do a lot of job for long,
00:29:54with the wing only working on one side, that is for certain.
00:29:57Here he comes into the pit lane.
00:29:59Slides down, it's a long entry to the pit lane,
00:30:02and quite a long exit, and very tight at the end.
00:30:04And, of course, this is speed restriction of 70 miles an hour as they come down here.
00:30:08So, Mika Sarlo will surrender fifth place.
00:30:12And these are Michael Schumacher, the mechanics, working on the car,
00:30:15although they do work on both cars, certain of them.
00:30:18And, of course, remember, Mika Sarlo did get penalized yesterday
00:30:22for speeding in the pit lane in the Ferrari, too,
00:30:24so you better be careful going out.
00:30:26Sarlo, three starts for B.A.R. in relief of Riccardo Zonta.
00:30:29That's Ross Brawn just checking out there,
00:30:31coming in with his thumbs up to say,
00:30:32guys, are you happy? Is there enough damage to the car?
00:30:34We don't need a repetition of the last two weeks ago.
00:30:37And out he goes, but that's very sad for Mika Sarlo.
00:30:40The only way is to go forward now.
00:30:42It is interesting that Eddie Irvine was offered the choice
00:30:46of Michael Schumacher's engineers and crew,
00:30:49and decided, no, I'll stick with the guys that got me here.
00:30:52And so, stays with his own group of people he's been working with all season.
00:30:56Yes, I think you have to.
00:30:58You have to, because you have such sort of magic with these guys,
00:31:01and you have to have this gelling all the time.
00:31:03And David Coulthard, well away on his own,
00:31:05I just wonder what they're going to think in that pit at McLaren.
00:31:08That will do his cause not much good at all.
00:31:10Come on, Eddie, you've got to do something about Barrichello now,
00:31:12because you're letting that McLaren get away,
00:31:14and I don't think Michael would do that.
00:31:16But then it is difficult to compare Michael with Eddie,
00:31:18because, basically, Schumacher's always been just that little bit quicker when necessary.
00:31:25Weaving back and forth there,
00:31:27as Coulthard holds a four-second lead on Barrichello.
00:31:32Eddie Irvine, 7 tenths back of Barrichello,
00:31:34then Frentzen, Villner, Ralf Schumacher,
00:31:37Mika Salo entered the pits in 7th.
00:31:40He surrendered 5th place to make that stop.
00:31:43So, Pedro Diniz, Fisichella, Zonta, and Wurtz will all move up.
00:31:52Chuck Villeneuve's got off to a great start.
00:31:54He has not finished a race all season in his BAR.
00:31:57Qualified 9th, but was 3rd fastest in the morning practice,
00:32:01and Villeneuve is now running in 5th.
00:32:03Yeah, Mika Hakkinen working his way through there.
00:32:05He's caught up with the two Arrows.
00:32:07He's up to 16th place.
00:32:09He'll be picking them off with consummate ease in no time at all.
00:32:13He will not be a happy camper.
00:32:15Mercedes McLaren just said that they are going to be retaining their two drivers,
00:32:19making a statement soon about the two drivers for next year,
00:32:21but it seems more than likely they'll keep them too,
00:32:23although Mika Hakkinen does want a major pay hike,
00:32:26and I think he should get one as well.
00:32:28But, of course, David Coulthard may not have endeared himself to the team at the moment.
00:32:32There's the lead that Coulthard has.
00:32:346.4 seconds on Barrichello's Stewart.
00:32:36Irvine's Ferrari, 6 tenths back.
00:32:39Johnny Herbert, we're told, has rejoined the race.
00:32:42We'll check on that when we come back.
00:32:45There's a look at your top half dozen
00:32:47as Mika Hakkinen has now climbed to 15th position
00:32:50and tries to climb his way through the field.
00:32:53We'll be right back.
00:32:56Fox Sportsnet coverage of the Grand Prix of Austria.
00:32:59David Coulthard now with a 7.3 second lead
00:33:02on Ruben's Barrichello, Eddie Irvine's Ferrari,
00:33:04Haidt's Harold Frentzen.
00:33:07In fourth, Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher.
00:33:10Oh, look, there's Mika trying to get by
00:33:13like there's Damon Hill back there.
00:33:15As they go past the pits, he's going to get behind a braking at the end.
00:33:18Come on, Damon, let him go.
00:33:20Oh, no, he's not going to go.
00:33:22The thing is, really, you've got to slingshot this turn one.
00:33:24The Castro curve, you've got to slingshot it
00:33:26so you can get out and pull the guy up the hill
00:33:28because there's very good positive braking at the top of the hill
00:33:30because you can go down the inside
00:33:32and actually use the hill to slow...
00:33:34Here he goes.
00:33:35He'll use the hill, not only Damon Hill,
00:33:37but the hill to slow him down as he goes in
00:33:39and hopefully not Damon.
00:33:41Well, what happened to Mika Hakkinen
00:33:43to put him deep in the field, actually back to last place
00:33:46and force him up through it all?
00:33:48Well, they were coming to the Ockenrink curve
00:33:50and Mika goes in and David Coulthard's down the inside.
00:33:53Look at the... And back he goes.
00:33:55I heard the engine revving.
00:33:56Irvine drops back, of course.
00:33:57He'd want to hit them, and then it's Barry Kellow through
00:33:59and David Coulthard now has nearly an eight-second lead.
00:34:02Look at that lead he's got.
00:34:04I wonder if any Eddie Irvine could get by Barry Kellow,
00:34:06but it just shows the domination that these McLarens really have.
00:34:10And David's saying in an interview the other day
00:34:11he really likes being out in front.
00:34:14A lot of drivers like to be behind because they can put pressure on,
00:34:16but he loves to be in front.
00:34:18Derek, David hit Mika hard enough.
00:34:20You have to wonder about the front-end alignment of David's car.
00:34:23Yeah, I...
00:34:24These cars are so...
00:34:25When you think how hard they hit those curbs,
00:34:27and they pull something like four times the weight of their own weight of the car
00:34:31as they hit the curbs, I think a little nudge, that's all it was,
00:34:34because Mika was turning in, don't forget, as David touched him,
00:34:37and I think you just need...
00:34:38You could have pushed it off with your own leg if you had kicked it.
00:34:41You probably moved him out of line, you know?
00:34:43They're on such a limit.
00:34:45But there's some fair old dices going on back through this.
00:34:47Here's Mika again working his way through the field.
00:34:50Oh, here he goes.
00:34:51Here he goes.
00:34:52Ralf Schumacher's off the road.
00:34:54Oh, that's the first time for a long time that he's had an error of judgment,
00:34:58although he might have been put there by somebody.
00:35:00Well, he's trying to get by Jacques Villeneuve, but he's well bogged in.
00:35:04Ralf Schumacher, sixth in the Drivers' Championship,
00:35:07coming into this race and stuck in the gravel trap.
00:35:11He's done such a stirring job this season.
00:35:13Oh, he's out of the car.
00:35:14He said, that's it.
00:35:15The car isn't going to go any further.
00:35:16Here he goes.
00:35:17He's trying to overtake.
00:35:19Oh, dear, dear, dear.
00:35:21Whoa.
00:35:22Oh, goodness.
00:35:23He was trying to get by that other car.
00:35:25Oh, and round the Sauber, and round he goes.
00:35:29Yes, he's trying to get by.
00:35:32I don't quite understand that.
00:35:33Denis might have just tried to get by him, and he was having to go to go back.
00:35:37Oh, dear.
00:35:39Looks like Mika Hakkinen was having another terrible time there as well.
00:35:43These backmarkers aren't being very clever on this circuit today.
00:35:46See, Mika hasn't moved up much.
00:35:48He's only just overtaken Damon, and he's made no impression on the cars in front.
00:35:52Now he moves on Jarno Trulli once again,
00:35:54and again just doesn't have the steam at the end of the straightaway to put Trulli down.
00:35:59Of course, Hakkinen is used to passing these cars in a lapping situation,
00:36:03where they will give way to him, but in this case,
00:36:05they're trying to hold him off for position, however futile that may be.
00:36:09See, Mika was going to have a go there at Trulli as he comes up the hill,
00:36:11but the yellow flag's out because of Ralf Schumacher, I assume,
00:36:14and, of course, that meant he couldn't go by at that point.
00:36:19Trulli, of course, rumored to possibly be going to replace Damon Hill at the end of the year at Jordan,
00:36:25but then there were so many rumors, it really was become rather boring talking about it.
00:36:28Yeah, it's silly season already at the midway point.
00:36:37So Hakkinen tried to work his way up through on one of these passing opportunities
00:36:41at the end of the long straightaway.
00:36:42There is the lead from Coulthard back to the white car.
00:36:46Rubens Barrichello in the Stewart Ford and the red Ferrari of Eddie Irvine.
00:36:50Pulling out of the second lap is David Coulthard at the moment with just what he likes.
00:36:55But, of course, it's not going to be such a big...
00:36:57If he gets a victory, it's not going to be quite so victorious as it was at the British Grand Prix,
00:37:01because I think Hakkinen will be cheering at the end the way he was there somehow.
00:37:04It may be redundant, Derek, to be saying red Ferrari,
00:37:07but hopefully we are picking up some new American viewers
00:37:09as we go through our second season here on Fox Sportsnet and want to welcome them.
00:37:15Absolutely. Hopefully, you will only ever see red Ferraris and no other color.
00:37:19Although, over the years, they have changed from time to time.
00:37:22Remember at Watkins Glen in Canada in 1964,
00:37:24they ran blue and white for the North American racing team.
00:37:26Just to keep them... Yes, for the team.
00:37:28Right. Exactly.
00:37:29Rather than a contested Ferrari.
00:37:31You've got to admit, there's nothing like the red Ferrari.
00:37:34No.
00:37:35And, of course, it's the only car that now managed to keep its national color.
00:37:39The American color was white.
00:37:40Here we go again.
00:37:41Let's just see what happens as Mika goes through on the inside.
00:37:44Yes, he got through quite cleanly that time.
00:37:46Thank you, Mr. Truly.
00:37:47Well, you might say the pros are in French racing blue,
00:37:50although a much darker shade than what we're used to.
00:37:52Well, that is true.
00:37:53Very true, of course, but...
00:37:55And there's some German racing silver on that McLaren,
00:37:58though it is an English chassis.
00:38:00Silly season rumors.
00:38:02Well, let's have a look back and have a look at the start once again.
00:38:06Yes, it was a fine start from both the McLaren.
00:38:08David Coulthard nearly gets away ahead of Mika,
00:38:10but then somehow lost a mid-spot there.
00:38:13Irvine thinks it's the best ways to follow Mika,
00:38:15and he's absolutely right.
00:38:16He has a good run there.
00:38:18Clean run.
00:38:19Look at both the Fords and Heinz are friends and working their way through.
00:38:22Mika Salo doing very well, of course, at that point.
00:38:24We're trying to see when Mika Salo actually makes contact.
00:38:27This was...
00:38:28Ooh, look at that move there.
00:38:34What is a McLaren going off backwards there like that for?
00:38:37Oh, my goodness.
00:38:38Anyway, this just shows how things happen in Formula 1,
00:38:42and Mika is going to have to wait for the whole grid.
00:38:44Oh, and there's...
00:38:45See that spinning? That's Johnny Herbert's rear wing.
00:38:47That's why Herbert had to come to the garage.
00:38:48He lost it in the midst of that first lap melee.
00:38:51They said that he lost his rear wing.
00:38:52I couldn't see just where he...
00:38:53Oh, there it is.
00:38:54There it is.
00:38:55...by Mika Salo, and that's how it all happened,
00:38:57all came together at the same time.
00:38:59That's why his nose was damaged and had to come in.
00:39:01Meanwhile, Mika Salo has to wait there.
00:39:04Meanwhile, David Coulthard cruises on in front,
00:39:08just pulling off with nearly a second a lap
00:39:10as he rounds the Castro curve and works his way along the back.
00:39:13Irvine in position 3, laps 13 completed.
00:39:18The scream of these cars is such that radio communication is,
00:39:22would you say, garbled at best, Derek?
00:39:24Absolutely, and you don't really want to talk anyway
00:39:27unless you have a problem.
00:39:28Schumacher used to talk quite a lot, I believe.
00:39:30Mika Hakkinen doesn't talk at all.
00:39:32But then, of course, you always have the slight language problem
00:39:35with a Finn trying to talk English across the sound waves.
00:39:40Who would have overtaken there?
00:39:42That's Alessi on verts.
00:39:44And here's Hakkinen trying to, again, to move up.
00:39:47Alessi having a fine race.
00:39:49Remember that he qualified very, very lowly on the grid.
00:39:52He was way down, down there in 17th place,
00:39:55having had engine problems in qualifying yesterday
00:39:57and missed out on half the session.
00:39:59So he's working his way back through the field
00:40:01and doing a good job.
00:40:03Now there's Hakkinen now pulling up on verts.
00:40:06Oh, look at Mika looking at the outside of Fizikela as they come.
00:40:12Should I say verts? I apologize for that.
00:40:13I believe it's verts. That's in 10th place.
00:40:16Now, verts, at his home circuit,
00:40:18I did expect to see him do a much better job here.
00:40:20He must have got held up in that, again, in that melee at the start
00:40:23because he was ahead of Fizikela by quite a considerable amount in qualifying.
00:40:27It works to be very disappointed not to be better in his home Grand Prix.
00:40:30It's hard to say whether it's Benetton's claimed lack of horsepower this season
00:40:34or just what's happened to Alexander Verts.
00:40:36He had just a tremendous debut season last year in Formula 1.
00:40:40Absolutely, but, you know, when you consider how well
00:40:42Ralf Schumacher's going with the same engine,
00:40:43let's ride here with Heinz-Harald.
00:40:53Show him shifting gear there with his hands on the wheel.
00:40:56Remember the paddle shift throughout this.
00:40:58You can go down. The advantage is you can go up in the middle of a corner,
00:41:01up through the gears as you're actually going through a corner,
00:41:04which helps a lot with the traction and getting things to stop the wheel spinning
00:41:07where sometimes you get lurid wheel spin.
00:41:09Remember, these cars are running up to 800 horsepower.
00:41:11They only weigh 1,300 pounds,
00:41:13and so every now and again you'll get a lot of wheel spin, unsurprisingly.
00:41:29Now, he's gaining on Eddie Irvine.
00:41:33Certain sections of the track he probably will, you see.
00:41:35This is the downhill section.
00:41:41There's quite a severe bump as you go into the last turn,
00:41:44the second part of the off and rint turns,
00:41:46as you bounce onto the main straightaway.
00:41:48It's quite nasty. It doesn't show it quite as well
00:41:50when you actually look at it on TV.
00:41:51Let's ride again with him.
00:41:53Peter Windsor has more on Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:41:56and on the season that he has had to date.
00:41:59Certainly his best ever in Formula 1.
00:42:03Yes, Heinz-Harald Frentzen has been driving very, very well for Jordan all year.
00:42:06Had that big accident in the Canadian Grand Prix
00:42:08and since then has been testing and racing with hairline fractures
00:42:12in his left leg.
00:42:14He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:16He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:18He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:20He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:22He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:23He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:24He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:25He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:26He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:27He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:28He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:29He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:30He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:31He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:32He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:33He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:34He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:35He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:36He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:37He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:38He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:39He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:40He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:41He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:42He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:43He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:44He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:45He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:46He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:47He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:48He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:49He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:50He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:51He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:52He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:53He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:54He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:55He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:56He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:57He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:58He's got a lot of experience.
00:42:59He's got a lot of experience.
00:43:00He's got a lot of experience.
00:43:01He's got a lot of experience.
00:43:02He's got a lot of experience.
00:43:03He's got a lot of experience.
00:43:04He's got a lot of experience.
00:43:05He's got a lot of experience.
00:43:06And, again, trying to move up through this field.
00:43:09Lots of passing opportunities here, but we'll see how he goes.
00:43:1315 laps complete here in the Grand Prix of Austria on Fox Sportsnet.
00:43:18Fox Sportsnet coverage of the Grand Prix of Austria.
00:43:22David Coulthard leading from Rubens Barrichello and Eddie Irvine at the A1 ring.
00:43:27Keith Olbermann and Kevin Frazier bring you all the day's scores, highlights,
00:43:30and breaking stories nightly at 10 on Fox Sports News.
00:43:33Oh, look at Jean Alési go down the inside there.
00:43:36He was really looking down the inside of Fisichella,
00:43:39having a storming drive from 17th place is Jean Alési.
00:43:42And he just had a go at him.
00:43:43Look at him.
00:43:44He's all over him.
00:43:45He's certainly not the least bit mindful of Häagen-Dazs behind.
00:43:47No, no, no.
00:43:48Here we go.
00:43:49He's got him.
00:43:50Oh, look at him kick the tail out as he went in.
00:43:51He just slid the tail out, broadsided it through there.
00:43:53I mean, who said there isn't some overtaking?
00:43:55When you get a man like Alési inspired like this with Mika Häagen-Dazs behind him,
00:43:59he is going for it.
00:44:00He's on a tear.
00:44:01What a tremendous run Alési is having.
00:44:03His last lap, though, a minute 15.4.
00:44:06Ah, it's going to be a little tough to advance from here.
00:44:08Here we go again, Leslie, but that was the traffic problem.
00:44:10That wasn't his.
00:44:11He was overtaking and had traffic.
00:44:13See, when you go down the inside like this, you're losing time
00:44:16because you actually have to take a tighter line.
00:44:18But look at him.
00:44:19Just get that tail out.
00:44:20The young Sicilian Frenchman sliding that car through as only he knows how.
00:44:25There was rumors of him going to Ferrari for next year to replace Eddie Irvine,
00:44:29but in fact he's now signed a two-year contract, $5 million a year,
00:44:33to stay with Sauber.
00:44:34I think a very wise move.
00:44:35And Sauber has re-signed with Ferrari for engines for next year as well
00:44:40and hope to have an updated spec engine before the end of the season.
00:44:43Well, they'll get the engine that Ferrari used at the beginning of this season, I assume.
00:44:46Look at him.
00:44:47Here we go.
00:44:48Mika is still stuck there behind Fisichella.
00:44:49He can't make the moves that Jean Alési is moving.
00:44:52But that, you know, somehow that's that extra bit of experience that Alési has.
00:44:57And they see him coming up from side to side, weaving in their mirror.
00:45:00They don't like it, these guys.
00:45:02Here he goes.
00:45:03Good move, Mika.
00:45:04Very nicely down the inside.
00:45:05Puts him slightly wrong in the corner,
00:45:07but Fisichella stays up really wide to allow him to get the clean bit of road coming out.
00:45:12They go along the top part of the circuit to the Jockenring curve.
00:45:14Look at Alési as he's working his way through,
00:45:17driving a real very close look.
00:45:19Yeah, now Fisichella doesn't challenge him at all for this corner.
00:45:22No, he doesn't.
00:45:23No.
00:45:25No, he didn't.
00:45:27He didn't stay that wide to let him go through.
00:45:30Here we go again.
00:45:31See, he stays that wide.
00:45:33Mika's down the inside.
00:45:34Lose it a little bit under braking.
00:45:36Alési will sort of say, Fisichella thinks,
00:45:38I'm going to be part of this accident.
00:45:39He locks it all up and flies off the road.
00:45:41I'll back out of this one.
00:45:43Here we go again.
00:45:44This is the next little dice on the cards.
00:45:49Let's have a look at Haakonen's progress
00:45:52since he was spun off the course by David Coulthard
00:45:55and completed lap 1 and 2 last,
00:45:59up to 11th by lap 11 and up to 8th place by lap 19.
00:46:03None of those positions, of course, pay points.
00:46:05Only the first six.
00:46:07It's a long way to go yet.
00:46:09Great drive for Barrichello.
00:46:11A little unnoticed in the charge by Mika Haakonen,
00:46:14but Rubens Barrichello 13 seconds off of David Coulthard's lead.
00:46:18But he has now opened up, you see,
00:46:2011 seconds on the Ferrari of Eddie Irvine.
00:46:22Eddie's not doing the job that was required of him,
00:46:25that he said he was going to do.
00:46:26They call him Eddie the Mouth,
00:46:27but I have a great respect for his driving.
00:46:30But, you know, he's got the whole team behind him
00:46:32and Ferrari expecting more than this of him
00:46:35because I don't think Schumacher would be allowing this to happen.
00:46:38Here we go.
00:46:39Mika looking down the inside of Zonta.
00:46:44You know, Zonta's had some success here, Derek.
00:46:47In 97, he finished second to Jean-Pablo Montoya in Formula 3000.
00:46:51And last year, Zonta won the FIA GT race here,
00:46:54important to his championship drive.
00:46:56Yeah, well, he was a world champion last year in GT racing, of course.
00:47:01Mika on the roll again now.
00:47:02Now he's going to try and do his best to catch up Jean Alési,
00:47:05who's got away in that sort of lap and a half
00:47:08after he'd overtaken Zonta.
00:47:13P7, lap 51, cool the brakes.
00:47:16That's what they're saying to Mika Häkkinen right now.
00:47:19In other words, don't overdo it.
00:47:21It is hard on brakes, so just cool it
00:47:23because he's been diving down the insides of people
00:47:25doing very, very late braking, as we saw,
00:47:27and that can overheat these carbon brakes.
00:47:31And it's something that they're using different compounds,
00:47:34trying different technology all the time.
00:47:37So lap 23 or 24, we would expect the first of the pit stops
00:47:41among the teams that are on a two-stop strategy.
00:47:43Can anyone make it on one stop, do you think?
00:47:47I have a feeling they tried to let Zanardi do that,
00:47:49hence they put him on the medium,
00:47:51which is the harder of the two tyres,
00:47:53hoping that Zanardi might just scroll around
00:47:56at the back of the grid there
00:47:57and work his way up through the field.
00:47:59Horan Alex is not really coming up the Goebbels.
00:48:01He tried steel brakes this weekend
00:48:03to get more feel in his brakes,
00:48:05rather than the carbon brakes,
00:48:06but he's gone back to carbon for the race,
00:48:08so I guess that didn't work.
00:48:09It didn't improve his time.
00:48:10And he really isn't having much joy at all.
00:48:17Mika Hakkinen,
00:48:19last year's winner of the Grand Prix of Austria,
00:48:21and pit stops have begun.
00:48:25A little early.
00:48:27Lap 21.
00:48:32Look at this close bit of manoeuvring here.
00:48:35Oh, look how close they are.
00:48:36I mean, a foot apart.
00:48:37That's Zontan Hill. Oof.
00:48:41That was...
00:48:43That was...
00:48:44And Damon gets it.
00:48:45Look how close they are.
00:48:46His wing is all over him as he comes out.
00:48:49Damon down the inside of Zonta,
00:48:51pushing him for 11th place,
00:48:53I think I'm right in saying.
00:48:54No, for 12th, I think.
00:48:55Look how close they are coming out.
00:48:57Of course, Damon loses a bit of momentum going in,
00:49:00and he just can't get the power down coming out,
00:49:02gets it a bit sideways,
00:49:03spinning the wheels as he does.
00:49:05The driver who pitted was Luca Baduor.
00:49:09Pitting at lap 21.
00:49:13And probably two or three laps from now,
00:49:15we'll see leaders' pit stops.
00:49:17And that was the Ferrari team telling Irvine,
00:49:192.9 seconds behind Barrichello,
00:49:22and nothing about saying,
00:49:23go, go, go, via, via, via, Eddie,
00:49:25but he should be being if he's going to do anything about this show.
00:49:28Well, he's picked up a few tenths on Barrichello
00:49:30in the last two laps.
00:49:32He's picked up four tenths of a second,
00:49:34second to third place.
00:49:35Traffic may have had something to do with that.
00:49:37So it's Coulthard, the leader,
00:49:38Barrichello 13.6 seconds back,
00:49:40Irvine, Frentzen, Diniz, and now Alessi
00:49:43in the points-paying positions.
00:49:45And right now,
00:49:46Jean Alessi is the fastest man on track.
00:49:49His last lap, 113.6.
00:49:52Although Mika Hakkinen has just turned the fastest lap of the race
00:49:56as he tries to run down Alessi
00:49:58and take that final points-paying position.
00:50:01And there's the gap, six to seven.
00:50:05I just still can't get over what a fine drive this is from Jean Alessi.
00:50:09But let's not forget, of course,
00:50:11that you have Pedro Diniz up there in fifth place.
00:50:13But Alessi's been catching him hand over fist.
00:50:17And as I said earlier,
00:50:18Alessi has such a bad qualifying session.
00:50:21There he is, coming through from 17th up to sixth place.
00:50:24We talk about Hakkinen's great drive,
00:50:26but it's Alessi's great drive as well.
00:50:28Yes, it is.
00:50:29Well, our whole pre-race show was Mika Salo,
00:50:31the replacement for Michael Schumacher,
00:50:33out with a broken leg from the British Grand Prix two weeks ago.
00:50:36Salo ran into the back of Johnny Herbert
00:50:38in that first-lap skirmish,
00:50:40had to stop to replace the front wing,
00:50:42and now he is back in 19th place,
00:50:44still on the lead lap,
00:50:46but Salo not making a lot of forward progress.
00:50:49What a lovely shot that was as they came down the hill
00:50:52through the Jochenrind curves.
00:50:55Another bit of instruction there for Mika,
00:50:57telling him exactly what the situation is.
00:51:01And of course, they won't be telling him when he's coming in,
00:51:03because they'll be telling him that on the radio,
00:51:04because they don't want the rest of the pit lane
00:51:05to know exactly when he's due to come in.
00:51:09Well, Peter, I wonder how much Michael Schumacher
00:51:14is involved in Mika Salo taking over that seat,
00:51:18and if he's able to offer Salo any constructive advice.
00:51:22Yes, well, back home in Switzerland,
00:51:24Michael Schumacher's been keeping a very, very close watch on proceedings.
00:51:27He's been phoning team personnel,
00:51:29phoning his management team.
00:51:31Back on Friday, he rang his manager three times
00:51:34in the space of 15 minutes
00:51:35to see why he hadn't sent over the practice times
00:51:37and all the sector times,
00:51:39and the answer was that the fax machine was permanently jammed,
00:51:41because so much stuff was going through to the Schumacher household
00:51:44when he was giving everybody a hard time.
00:51:46He spoke to Mika Salo very early in practice,
00:51:49and already Michael had been on the phone to him,
00:51:51giving him advice on how to set the car up
00:51:52and how to run things.
00:51:53I hate to think what he said to Mika, of course,
00:51:55when Mika left the road on Friday.
00:51:58I think what Michael thought this morning
00:52:00when he saw him go off and lay a jolly Herbert.
00:52:04Denise come in.
00:52:07And he surrenders fifth spot to do so.
00:52:10See how quick they can be.
00:52:11This is really actually a very, very good bit of driving
00:52:14from both drivers and a great bit of work from the team,
00:52:16but it's a long stop at the moment.
00:52:18That's too long.
00:52:19Ten seconds is too long, but he's in a hurry to get out.
00:52:21Remember, there's a restrictor on that engine,
00:52:23and he can only go 70 miles an hour,
00:52:24so he crosses that line just there.
00:52:26We're going to have to get Michael Schumacher
00:52:28wired up online so he can access
00:52:30all of that scoring information in real time.
00:52:32Yes, I'm sure he'll have it fixed before very long.
00:52:35Fax machine, that's old hat.
00:52:39David Coulthard merrily out on his own now.
00:52:45Actually, it seems that David has quietened off a bit.
00:52:48He's sort of, probably because they were telling him
00:52:50about the brakes as well,
00:52:52because he's only got a 12-second lead,
00:52:53I think I'm right in saying at this point,
00:52:55having sort of streaked away at a second a lap.
00:52:58And yeah, he's backed out of it.
00:52:59According to the lap times,
00:53:00perhaps half a second slower than
00:53:02Barrichello or Irvine at this stage.
00:53:05There's the gap, 12.5 seconds back to Barrichello,
00:53:08and a further three seconds back to Eddie Irvine.
00:53:12I just hope he's managed to put out of his mind
00:53:14the fact that he did cause Mika to go off,
00:53:16and that will cause a little bit of friction
00:53:17within the team, to put it mildly.
00:53:19I hope the team also
00:53:20don't try and make a mess of his pit stop.
00:53:23Alesi coming in now for his pit stop.
00:53:26What a wonderful day this has been for Sauber thus far.
00:53:28Absolutely superb.
00:53:29I mean, 160 starts,
00:53:31one win for him with Ferrari,
00:53:33and 31 podium places.
00:53:35He's had a lot of podiums,
00:53:36and that man really deserves to have won more Grand Prixs.
00:53:39He is an outstanding man,
00:53:40he loves motor racing,
00:53:41it is his life.
00:53:44This is the problem, I think,
00:53:45with the Nitze's stop.
00:53:49So lap 24, Alesi makes his stop,
00:53:51and that moves Hakkinen up past the two Saubers
00:53:54up to fifth place.
00:53:57So it's Coulthard, Barrichello, Irvine,
00:53:59Frentzen, Hakkinen.
00:54:04And we'll take this pause,
00:54:05and hopefully be back in time
00:54:07for the leaders' pit stops.
00:54:08You're watching Formula 1 on Fox Sportsnet.
00:54:13Welcome back to the Grand Prix of Austria
00:54:14on Fox Sportsnet.
00:54:15Mike Joy with Derek Bell and Peter Windsor.
00:54:17We would like your comments.
00:54:19Send us an email.
00:54:21Formula1 at foxsports.net
00:54:23is our email address.
00:54:25We'd like to hear from you,
00:54:26and I guarantee that the producers
00:54:27and Derek and I read all the emails that come in,
00:54:30as does Peter,
00:54:31and we may not have a chance to respond to them all,
00:54:33but we do certainly consider your opinions very carefully.
00:54:3827 laps complete,
00:54:39still waiting for the leaders' pit stops.
00:54:41David Coulthard has a lead of 12.6 seconds
00:54:44on Rubens Barrichello,
00:54:46who is 2.8 seconds up on Eddie Irvine,
00:54:50who has 14.3 seconds on Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
00:54:53Mika Hakkinen now 4 seconds behind Frentzen
00:54:56and Jacques Villeneuve in the 6th position.
00:55:00And it's Fisichella, Wurz, Trulli, Damon Hill,
00:55:02Riccardo Zonta, and then the Saubers of Alessi and Denis
00:55:05are 12th and 13th.
00:55:07After making their pit stops,
00:55:08they will cycle through
00:55:10as the cars ahead of them make their first stop.
00:55:1728 laps complete.
00:55:18Derek indicates everybody up front
00:55:20started with full tanks.
00:55:23And I thought they'd be in by now.
00:55:25Yes, it gives the impression
00:55:26some of them might be going for either late stops
00:55:28or else they're only going for one,
00:55:29completely throwing everything out of kilter
00:55:31for what we've been led to believe.
00:55:35But we'll see.
00:55:36I mean, they could come in for late, early stops,
00:55:38waiting for the conditions on the track to be just right
00:55:41to allow them to do so.
00:55:43I'm sure the last thing the world Mika Hakkinen wants to do
00:55:45is to have to come in for anything
00:55:46because he's having such a charge through the field.
00:55:49We'll mention that Ralf Schumacher
00:55:50out of the race after 16 laps.
00:55:52Johnny Herbert spent four laps in the garage
00:55:54replacing his rear wing and continued.
00:55:57Tora Takagi has pulled to a halt
00:55:59at the side of the course
00:56:00while we were on break.
00:56:05Mika Salo replaced a front wing
00:56:07and he is at the tail end of the lead lap
00:56:09in 18th position.
00:56:15Alex Zanardi down there
00:56:17still not doing really the job
00:56:19that one expected on the fastest lap there
00:56:21for Mika Hakkinen.
00:56:22Very fine one minute 12.9.
00:56:24Zanardi not doing the work
00:56:25and there's lots of rumors now.
00:56:27Although Williams said at the last Grand Prix
00:56:29they were supporting him.
00:56:30Now it seems that Williams are very disenchanted
00:56:32and probably telling the truth at last.
00:56:34And the fact is that they've been obviously
00:56:36trying to get Montoya back.
00:56:38They can't get Montoya back
00:56:39because he said he's staying with Chip Ganassi
00:56:41for another year
00:56:42because he prefers it in America.
00:56:43Right, he has a...
00:56:44Well, he signed to a three-year...
00:56:46I guess lease agreement's the best way to describe it
00:56:49to drive for Ganassi in kart.
00:56:52And he just said, we'll stay there.
00:56:55Eddie Irvine, 17 seconds up
00:56:57on Mika Hakkinen.
00:56:5830 laps coming around.
00:57:02I'll tell you what, if Eddie Irvine
00:57:03gets overtaken by Mika Hakkinen
00:57:04that is going to be a pretty poor sign.
00:57:06Michael Schumacher will not be a happy man
00:57:08lying there in bed thinking,
00:57:09come on, you can do more than that if you have to.
00:57:13But who knows what problems Eddie's having.
00:57:14There can be just something wrong with his tyres.
00:57:16I mean, he can adjust his brake balance
00:57:18so there shouldn't be any reason
00:57:19for locking that brake up
00:57:20apart from over-exuberance going into a corner.
00:57:23And that has been Irvine's complaint of the weekend
00:57:25is inability to find a balance with the brakes
00:57:28on his Ferrari.
00:57:32So Pit Crew's at the ready
00:57:33but no pit stops among the leaders as yet.
00:57:36Both Sauber's have been in,
00:57:38Luca Badua has been in,
00:57:40but otherwise Pit Road's been a lonely place.
00:57:4329 laps.
00:57:45It's a bit of a surprise here.
00:57:47This could be why, of course,
00:57:48that Lazy and De Nicks were going so well.
00:57:51They were running a lighter fuel load
00:57:53and that enabled them to run so fast at the beginning.
00:57:57Pedro de la Rosa is in
00:57:58as Frentzen has been caught up now by Mika Hakkinen.
00:58:02So this battle is for 4th place.
00:58:05What a drive by Mika Hakkinen.
00:58:06He's had some stunning drives this year,
00:58:08I have to admit.
00:58:09He's really proved he's got his confidence going.
00:58:12Nazaire here, she looked so concerned earlier
00:58:14when he got taken out by David.
00:58:16Here he is.
00:58:17And he's really pressing on.
00:58:19I mean, from the back of the field
00:58:21right up to 5th place is amazing.
00:58:25He's going to get him down here.
00:58:26Look at the power of this McLaren.
00:58:27Is he going to get him under braking at the end
00:58:29into Turn 1?
00:58:30He's having a look.
00:58:31Pulling out of the slipstream, but no.
00:58:33They lose about 30% of their downforce
00:58:35when they're that close to the car in front.
00:58:37Which means, of course,
00:58:38if they try to turn into a very, very high-speed corner
00:58:40that close, they're not going to get round it
00:58:42quite as smoothly as they would have liked.
00:58:44Now here we go.
00:58:45He's going to have to go uphill under braking.
00:58:46No.
00:58:47He might not find it quite as easy to get by him.
00:58:49But look at the brakes on that McLaren.
00:58:50Well, he's been out there a couple of times
00:58:52trying to get in Frentzen's mirrors
00:58:55and set up for a pass.
00:58:56But it doesn't look as if he is getting launched
00:58:58off the corner as well as the Jordan.
00:59:01No, he doesn't.
00:59:03I noticed that before.
00:59:04He wasn't getting out of the corners quite as well.
00:59:06But that could be part of his technique.
00:59:07He comes in very, very fast
00:59:09into the apex of the corner,
00:59:10which is a hacken and trait.
00:59:12Comes right into the corner
00:59:13before he gets on it to go out.
00:59:17So Mika Hakkinen sitting fifth
00:59:18after a first-lap, second-corner collision
00:59:21with his McLaren Mercedes teammate, David Coulthard.
00:59:25Coulthard got into the back of Hakkinen
00:59:27as Mika turned in for the corner.
00:59:29David went on and continued.
00:59:31Hakkinen spun up the track,
00:59:32blocking the path of Eddie Irvine.
00:59:34Both Johnny Herbert and Mika Salo
00:59:36had damage and have made repairs and come back.
00:59:38But Hakkinen has driven from last place now
00:59:41to fifth behind Coulthard,
00:59:43Barrichello, Irvine and Frensen.
00:59:46We're at 31 laps,
00:59:4831 of 71.
00:59:51Look at the power of that Mutian Honda engine.
00:59:53It does pull as they come out of the Castro corner
00:59:55going up the hill.
00:59:57Eddie can see another point going
00:59:58as Hakkinen has a go at him.
01:00:00I didn't must admit I didn't think Hakkinen
01:00:01would come back as quickly as this.
01:00:03No, nor did I.
01:00:05They have a major problem getting traction out of that corner.
01:00:07That's where I thought the McLaren might
01:00:09have that advantage.
01:00:10Norbert Haug of Mercedes
01:00:11oversees all their motorsports programs.
01:00:17Watching Mika.
01:00:18Mika will now be assessing the situation,
01:00:20just trying to figure out just the ideal place
01:00:21to have a go at this little Jordan car in front.
01:00:24Derek, could another possibility be
01:00:26that the McLaren is close to a pit stop
01:00:28and may not want to take a necessary risk
01:00:31if they're going to be pitting in a lap or two?
01:00:32Well, it could easily be.
01:00:34It could be a good time to bring Mika in.
01:00:36If he's stuck behind the Jordan,
01:00:37it might be a good time to pop him in now.
01:00:40And let him have a clean bit of road.
01:00:41But then, of course, they've got to allow for
01:00:42how long will he be in,
01:00:43and will he go out in the midst of a group
01:00:44that are having a battle further back?
01:00:46And those strategies and possibilities
01:00:48are being played out in the pit lane right now.
01:00:51As Hakkinen tracks Heinz-Harald Frentzen
01:00:53for fourth place.
01:00:55Is he going to have a look down?
01:00:56Yes, here he goes.
01:00:57He's popping.
01:00:58Yes, here he goes.
01:00:59Is he going to get him?
01:01:00Whoa!
01:01:02Oh, dear.
01:01:05Heinz-Harald Frentzen didn't really let him go through.
01:01:08There was a bit of wheelbanging
01:01:09about to go on,
01:01:10and Heinz just closed the door
01:01:11and he made it very tight.
01:01:12But the better driver won,
01:01:14and that's the way things go.
01:01:16Well, at first, it looked like
01:01:17Hakkinen was hard on the brakes
01:01:18and was going to leave the corner to Frentzen.
01:01:20And then, as you said,
01:01:21he dives all the way to the apex.
01:01:23He popped it right in there.
01:01:24Yeah, he absolutely did.
01:01:26Here we go again.
01:01:27Let's just watch this super bit of passing by Hakkinen.
01:01:29No movement.
01:01:30They're both there.
01:01:31Suddenly, whoops!
01:01:32Here he goes.
01:01:33And, of course, the Jordan man had no option.
01:01:35Either that, or they're going to take them both off.
01:01:37And he really needs to finish the race
01:01:39and get the points for Jordan.
01:01:40Hakkinen really finishes his braking early,
01:01:42and it looks like right here
01:01:45he accelerates all the way through the apex.
01:01:47Well, I think he just came off the brakes
01:01:49and allowed that extra bit of lurch
01:01:51as he went through.
01:01:52But he had tremendous grip.
01:01:54Look at it.
01:01:55I mean, there is no locking up at all.
01:01:56Absolutely superb control there by the car.
01:01:58But remember,
01:01:59they're coming uphill into that corner,
01:02:01which does enable you to get away with this
01:02:03and not get the car sliding out of control.
01:02:06Fine bit of overtaking by Mika Hakkinen
01:02:08that puts him up into fourth spot.
01:02:11Yep.
01:02:12And look at the lead Hakkinen's already got on him.
01:02:31Just to say that
01:02:32when you see that in-car stuff there with Heinz-Harald,
01:02:35he's actually signed a contract with Jordan
01:02:37for another year,
01:02:38which is very good.
01:02:39Excellent.
01:02:40Excellent.
01:02:41So Mika Hakkinen now has moved up to fourth.
01:02:43Jack Villeneuve's just gone in the pits
01:02:45from a very...
01:02:46lying in a very fine sixth place.
01:02:48Very strong position.
01:02:49Let's hope they can stay there
01:02:50and get some points for B.A.R.
01:02:54But I believe it was a slow pit stop.
01:02:56Seems to have lost a bit of time in there.
01:02:58Now let's just see how Irvine's worked over by Hakkinen.
01:03:02And that's not what Irvine will be looking at
01:03:04and not be very happy with at all.
01:03:06That plus 17.4.
01:03:10Rubens Barrichello also is closing the gap
01:03:13on race leader David Coulthard.
01:03:15It's down to ten seconds.
01:03:16We'll be right back.
01:03:20Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage
01:03:22of the Grand Prix of Austria.
01:03:23Our next telecast is not two weeks away as usual.
01:03:27It's coming right off the Grand Prix of Germany
01:03:29Sunday, August 1st, 10 a.m.
01:03:31your local time
01:03:32here on Fox Sportsnet.
01:03:33While we were away,
01:03:35Jacques Villeneuve never exited pit road.
01:03:38He is done for the day.
01:03:39DNF in all nine races thus far.
01:03:42Alex Zanardi is coasted to a halt
01:03:44at the side of the track.
01:03:45Seven DNFs in nine races.
01:03:47And here's the second place car,
01:03:48Rubens Barrichello, for his stop at lap 37.
01:03:58That's a slow stop, but of course,
01:03:59oh, he did something wrong in the restart there
01:04:02trying to get out the pit lane.
01:04:03He got it going eventually,
01:04:04and he lost a lot of time, did Rubens.
01:04:06He seemed to get a gear,
01:04:07but it was almost like he had the wrong gear,
01:04:09and it didn't want to go forward.
01:04:11Here he comes out the pit lane exit.
01:04:15He'll have dropped to quite a bit of time like that.
01:04:17Whether it'll help Eddie Irvine, we don't know.
01:04:19Well, it will have helped Eddie Irvine without a doubt,
01:04:20because Irvine has to stop as well.
01:04:23And it puts him right behind Heinz Erle-Frenzel.
01:04:26Yes, and McLarens are setting up, of course,
01:04:28for one of their two cars to come in.
01:04:30We don't know which one it'll be.
01:04:32All right, 37 laps, Derek.
01:04:34We're past halfway,
01:04:35as Riccardo Zonta comes in for BAR
01:04:38here at lap 38.
01:04:41So for the front runners, Derek,
01:04:43do you put on that full load of fuel
01:04:45on a one-stop strategy,
01:04:46or do you short-fuel them and pit them again later on?
01:04:49Let's see what happens with Coulthard here.
01:04:54No, let's see a time.
01:04:55That's it, we've got the time coming up.
01:04:56Good stop.
01:04:57Very good stop.
01:05:00That's a slow stop.
01:05:02But, of course, he's only going to have a one-stopper,
01:05:04so consequently that means that he would have taken
01:05:07a bit longer to get that fuel on.
01:05:10So Coulthard back out on course
01:05:12with a full load of fuel.
01:05:14We're waiting now on Eddie Irvine,
01:05:17Mika Hakkinen, Heinz Erle-Frenzel,
01:05:19and the Benettons.
01:05:20It's going to be Eddie Irvine leading the race,
01:05:22I imagine, at this point.
01:05:24But he won't be leading it for very long.
01:05:26That looks very distinctly like the two McLarens,
01:05:28nose to tail, as we come around.
01:05:30Remember, Mika Hakkinen is now front of David Coulthard
01:05:32because David has done his pit stop.
01:05:35So Mika now is up to at least third place.
01:05:37But Mika probably used more of his tires,
01:05:39certainly used more of his brakes than David has.
01:05:42David has fresh tires and a fairly clean car.
01:05:45And I'm sure he's not going to invite David to go by.
01:05:50So McLaren getting ready for Mika Hakkinen next lap
01:05:53to make what could be his one pit stop for the day.
01:05:57Oh, dear.
01:06:00That is not Hakkinen and McLaren Mercedes, incidentally.
01:06:03And there, that is an Arrows parked out there.
01:06:06De La Rosa.
01:06:07De La Rosa, who may well be forming part of this new Spanish team.
01:06:11They're talking about the super Spanish team
01:06:13to take the 12th spot on the grid,
01:06:15or the 12th team on the grid.
01:06:17Ron Dennis looks like he's holding a board out there with tire.
01:06:20I don't know what tire means.
01:06:21I mean, I know it means tire,
01:06:22but I don't know what implication it has in this pit stop.
01:06:25So here's Hakkinen's stop at lap 39.
01:06:28You can bet his mechanic's going to be trying so hard
01:06:30to get him out there in front and with a great...
01:06:33Look at it, 7, 8, 9, 10.
01:06:35Same sort of time, really, as David Coulthard.
01:06:38So nothing much to choose between them on that stop.
01:06:41And they did take the time to put in a full load of fuel.
01:06:44His stop time was a little faster than Coulthard,
01:06:48not statistically important, one second over 71 laps, but...
01:06:52You saw Coulthard just coming up the hill there as Mika
01:06:54is at the bottom of the hill.
01:06:56Yellow flag out there, that, of course, is Ford de la Rosa.
01:06:59The two Stuart Fords running nose to tail.
01:07:01Remember, Herbert is something like four laps behind,
01:07:04having lost his wing when he got punted up the back end
01:07:07by Mika Salo very early on in the race,
01:07:09in fact, on the first lap.
01:07:11Now, Salo, with the pit stops, up to 12th place,
01:07:15but certainly not a factor.
01:07:17Eddie Irvine is the race leader.
01:07:19David Coulthard in second,
01:07:21on his out lap after making his pit stop.
01:07:23Mika Hakkinen is shown as third before his stop.
01:07:28Frentzen, Barrichello, Fisichella, and Burtz.
01:07:31Ferrari now setting up for Irvine.
01:07:34So Irvine going up the hill, up at the Castro curve.
01:07:39A lot depends on just how efficient this pit stop is.
01:07:42They want to have a really good stop.
01:07:44They don't want to let Eddie fall back anymore
01:07:46into the clutches of Mika Hakkinen,
01:07:48which, of course, is surely going to happen.
01:07:50Unless Eddie can pull something up.
01:07:52His tires haven't been working as well,
01:07:54and as you said, Mike, he has had braking problems this weekend.
01:07:57And with a lead of 19 seconds,
01:07:59it's very doubtful he could make a stop
01:08:01and retain the lead with the amount of time
01:08:04that it takes to get the length of pit road.
01:08:06So here's Irvine's crew.
01:08:09Set for Eddie this time around.
01:08:12That is Mika Salo there, we see.
01:08:15Here he comes, down the pit lane.
01:08:17Oh, that's Salo.
01:08:19Salo, ready for Salo.
01:08:21So Mika Salo in 12th place comes in,
01:08:24and that surprises a lot of folks, including us.
01:08:27So it's probably because Eddie's got a clear bit of road ahead of him,
01:08:29and they may as well leave him out there with that clear bit of road.
01:08:35There are the five Formula 1 teams that Salo has driven for.
01:08:38This is a very good pit stop.
01:08:41Mika Salo has driven for?
01:08:43Yes. His first Formula 1 drive
01:08:46was for Lotus in Japan and Australia
01:08:49in 1994.
01:08:51And then he joined, of course, Tyrrell, where he stayed for a long time.
01:08:54A report on Jacques Villeneuve's car.
01:08:56He is out with rear suspension trouble.
01:08:58Nine for nine in the DNF department for Villeneuve.
01:09:02There's been a lot of reaction within the team
01:09:05all about the team,
01:09:07sort of one of the main players on the team.
01:09:10And there's been a lot of background problems going on there,
01:09:13and so we're not quite sure what the future is,
01:09:15but Adrian Reynard has actually...
01:09:17has to go through Craig Pollack,
01:09:19who Adrian was the chief designer,
01:09:21and he has to go through Pollack to get any decisions made,
01:09:23and he's actually taken a sideways move,
01:09:25and he's not happy at all.
01:09:27As you know, Jacques Villeneuve had made rather outrageous statements
01:09:30about Adrian Reynard earlier in the year,
01:09:32and Adrian wasn't happy about it.
01:09:34He says, there's three things in my life.
01:09:36One's my children, my family, and the other is my business,
01:09:38and then there's motor racing, and then there's Jacques Villeneuve.
01:09:40He said, and they come in that order.
01:09:42Hence, I think he's not part of the play anymore.
01:09:44Well, they've made up. It's been reported this week that they've made up.
01:09:48BAR only completing 51% of the total laps entering today,
01:09:5114 DNFs in a total of 16 starts.
01:09:54A BAD start for BAR, if you'll excuse the pun.
01:09:58Well, we just heard there was a radio problem for Alex Zanardi,
01:10:01and then he ran out of gas.
01:10:02Oh, no.
01:10:03What else can happen to that poor guy?
01:10:05Well, Eddie Irvine has just run his fastest lap of the race.
01:10:08He is on very light tanks,
01:10:11and now Ferrari is laying out for Irvine,
01:10:14and neither of the Benettons have been in.
01:10:16Fisichella now up to 6th and Wurtz to 7th.
01:10:22And there's a look at the two pits.
01:10:26And they are some distance in time apart on the racetrack.
01:10:30So here's Fisichella in,
01:10:32and Johnny Herbert in as well.
01:10:35This is at lap 42.
01:10:41Fisichella is in 6th place.
01:10:45With all that brake dust, you see why the tire changers wear helmets
01:10:48and have that breathing apparatus.
01:10:5210.3 for Giancarlo Fisichella, and here's Irvine.
01:10:57So Irvine surrenders the lead at lap 43.
01:11:02Remember in Great Britain two weeks ago,
01:11:04he needed to get out ahead of David Coulthard on the stop.
01:11:06Couldn't do it. Let's see here.
01:11:08Well, I don't think he's going to get ahead of him today.
01:11:10Not enough of a lead to do it.
01:11:13Good stop. Good stop.
01:11:15I mean, that is the quickest pit stop so far.
01:11:17Very, very, very good indeed
01:11:19by the Ferrari crew to get him out.
01:11:22There's his teammate Mika Salo coming around,
01:11:24as you can see, as Eddie comes out of the pit lane.
01:11:28And right behind him, it looks like Mika Hackenham.
01:11:31So Irvine with only 8.6 seconds stop quicker than the McLaren,
01:11:35so a faster pit stop for Eddie.
01:11:38Fenton's in the pits.
01:11:42Damon Hill was up to about 7th place.
01:11:44He hasn't been in yet.
01:11:48We have to wait just a few laps for it to sort itself out.
01:11:51And now Wurz is in as well.
01:11:54Look at that brake dust as he takes that wheel off.
01:11:57My goodness gracious me.
01:11:58It's the most unpleasant stuff.
01:11:59Everything gets absolutely black and it gets in your eyes.
01:12:01It's very uncomfortable.
01:12:04Look at that group of cars that Wurz is going to have to contend with
01:12:07because he's going to make it out of the turn ahead of that group.
01:12:291.8 seconds first to second over Coulthard,
01:12:32so Eddie Irvine got what he needed from his Ferrari pit crew.
01:12:36Well, he had just that.
01:12:37We only saw the time it took for him to actually have the refueling.
01:12:40There's the gap you can see,
01:12:41but you only saw the timing of him in the pit itself.
01:12:45You didn't see how long it took him to get in and get out.
01:12:47And that's where he made up that time
01:12:48because he was only a second quicker on the overall pit stop.
01:12:52And this, of course, is a complete reversal of roles
01:12:54to what we saw last time.
01:12:55And this, of course, is a complete reversal of roles
01:12:57to what we saw last week or two weeks ago at the British Grand Prix
01:13:00when he had David in front of Eddie
01:13:02and he had a quicker pit stop
01:13:03because Eddie overshot his pit line,
01:13:05which he didn't do today, that is for sure.
01:13:07Now, let's just hope that Mika Sala will do a teammate's job here
01:13:10and let Eddie by.
01:13:12And, of course, maybe hold up David just a little bit.
01:13:15I wouldn't wish that on David at all,
01:13:16but that's the sort of thing that happens in teams.
01:13:19Damon Hill in for his stop.
01:13:21Quick tyre change and enough fuel to go the distance.
01:13:24Good stop, nine-second stop.
01:13:26And Damon, of course, will be staying with the team
01:13:28the rest of the year after all that confusion
01:13:30before and through the British Grand Prix.
01:13:32After all, he is a racer at heart.
01:13:34And he wasn't quitting or considering quitting
01:13:36because he was frightened or scared.
01:13:38It was just the fact that he wasn't enjoying it.
01:13:40And he wasn't getting the speed that Frentzen's not getting.
01:13:42And he's still not getting the speed,
01:13:44but he's enjoying his racing.
01:13:45And why not?
01:13:46You're on $10 million a year.
01:13:47I think I'd stay there and do it.
01:13:49You're on $10 million a year.
01:13:50I think I'd stay there enjoying the money, too,
01:13:52as well as the racing, if I could do both.
01:13:54Well, the risk-reward ratio is highest in Formula 1
01:13:56of all the forms of motorsport in the world.
01:13:59And if you're not enjoying it,
01:14:00how can you give it your fullest attention?
01:14:02And that's what needs to be done.
01:14:0445 of 71 laps are complete.
01:14:06Eddie Irvine on Ferrari leading.
01:14:11Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage
01:14:13of the Grand Prix of Austria
01:14:14from the A1 ring outside Spielberg.
01:14:16Mike Choi with Derek Bell and Peter Windsor.
01:14:19Well, Eddie Irvine is having the kind of day
01:14:22that he's bragged about for two weeks, Derek.
01:14:24He said, I'm prepared to carry this fight for Ferrari
01:14:27and run it at the front.
01:14:29And that's just what he's done.
01:14:31Of course, he's been aided by the incident on the start
01:14:34between David Coulthard and his McLaren Mercedes teammate,
01:14:37Mika Haakonen, the world champion.
01:14:39Yes, here they come down into the Jockenring curve.
01:14:42And David tucks inside Mika and clicks him out.
01:14:45Mika didn't want him to let through,
01:14:46and I don't think he thought he was going to go through.
01:14:48It slowed down Eddie Irvine
01:14:49and dropped him back behind Barry Keller,
01:14:51which really cost Eddie a lot of time.
01:14:53And somehow this has all come back into Eddie's favor.
01:14:56Ferrari had a brilliant pit stop.
01:14:58He's now 1.9 seconds ahead, as you can see,
01:15:00of David Coulthard.
01:15:01In front of him, he has a Prost,
01:15:03and also he has his teammate, Mika Sala,
01:15:06who is not having that most inspired race
01:15:08some way back in the field,
01:15:10not going that particularly well at all.
01:15:13Unfortunately, having knocked the nose off his car
01:15:15when he came in contact with the back of Johnny Herbert,
01:15:17again in that melee when Mika Haakonen went off.
01:15:24Eddie Irvine must have that shamrock in his pocket.
01:15:27Let's go back for a word from Peter Windsor
01:15:30along the pit lane.
01:15:34It's been business as usual for Eddie Irvine.
01:15:36He's tried to keep his head down,
01:15:37keep out of the limelight.
01:15:39He went straight to the Fiorano,
01:15:40and then the Monza tests after the British Grand Prix.
01:15:43He hasn't been to see Michael.
01:15:45He hasn't really communicated very much with Michael.
01:15:47It's not really his business at the moment.
01:15:49His job is to get on with trying to reinforce
01:15:52Ferrari's position in the World Championship.
01:15:54He was offered Michael's engineers and mechanics,
01:15:58the Michael squad of guys,
01:16:00in an effort,
01:16:01if there was anything they could do to help Eddie,
01:16:03he could have them.
01:16:04Eddie, quite rightly I believe, said no,
01:16:06he will stick with his mechanics,
01:16:07stick with his own race engineers,
01:16:09and that's what he's doing.
01:16:10He's doing a good job keeping his head down.
01:16:12Mika Salo, as we say,
01:16:13has been talking to Schumacher a lot,
01:16:15and Michael's taking great interest in the proceedings here in Austria.
01:16:25Well, there you see it.
01:16:26Irvine, 1.9 seconds now,
01:16:282.2 seconds ahead of Coulthard.
01:16:30Just now he slipped by his teammate Mika Salo,
01:16:35which gave him that break.
01:16:36Now Mika, of course, might not be quite so kind to David.
01:16:39It might let him by quite as quickly as he wished.
01:16:42This is, of course, Mika Hakkinen,
01:16:45jinxing to have a look at Herbert.
01:16:52I wonder, going by what Peter just said,
01:16:55are you surprised there's not been a lot of communication
01:16:57between Eddie and Michael Schumacher?
01:16:59Well, we don't know.
01:17:00I mean, I'm sure Eddie's found out how he is,
01:17:02and if he's well or not,
01:17:03but he doesn't need to talk to him that much,
01:17:05because he's his own man very much,
01:17:07and there's obviously been a little bit of aggravation there,
01:17:09and he has heard that Michael doesn't want him to stay in the team,
01:17:12and also Eddie is not happy to run a second string to Michael Schumacher.
01:17:16Whoa, look at this,
01:17:17as Mika Hakkinen goes by the inside of Rubens Barrichello.
01:17:21Another little move forward by Mika,
01:17:23super bit of driving,
01:17:24but that car just seems to be on rails,
01:17:26does that McLaren.
01:17:28So, excuse me,
01:17:29I'm not surprised that there hasn't been too much discussion between them.
01:17:34There never was before.
01:17:37Here's another look at Mika Hakkinen overtaking Rubens Barrichello.
01:17:41Super bit, I mean, what a clean move,
01:17:43a super clean move down the inside,
01:17:46but the brakes on that McLaren are outstanding,
01:17:48you have to admit.
01:17:51Here it is again,
01:17:52sweeps out,
01:17:53down the inside,
01:17:54Barrichello could have cut him off,
01:17:56I mean, Barrick could,
01:17:57Barrichello could have actually made a much tighter run for him.
01:18:00Right, and that is for position,
01:18:01that's, uh, uh-oh,
01:18:03there is John Alesi,
01:18:05over near the barrier,
01:18:07as the Sauber team awaits Alesi and Denitz for pit stops,
01:18:12and, uh, looks like they're gonna hook the car up and lift it away.
01:18:14What a shame, because Alesi's had a really inspired drive today.
01:18:18You see on the, uh, right side of the screen,
01:18:20well, here, let's show you what happened first.
01:18:25Here we come.
01:18:26Whoa.
01:18:27What a fair old bit of overtaking down there.
01:18:30Fair bit of overtaking down there.
01:18:32Coulthard.
01:18:34I'm surprised that he was let through quite as easily as that,
01:18:37but they are desperately good friends.
01:18:39Those two, they're great buddies,
01:18:41although I'm sure on the racetrack it shouldn't come out,
01:18:43but they sort of spend a lot of time together.
01:18:46Well, David Coulthard now passes Mika Salo
01:18:49and sets out, uh, in chase of Eddie Irvine,
01:18:52and he's going to have to get Irvine
01:18:55to try to put a good face on a bad day for McLaren.
01:18:59Uh, after dumping his teammate on the start of the race,
01:19:02uh, if Coulthard does not come through and win this,
01:19:05uh, Derek, he's going to have an awful lot more explaining to do
01:19:08than if he's atop the podium.
01:19:10There's Jean Alesi walking off.
01:19:12Yeah, you're absolutely right.
01:19:13That was a great drive by Jean Alesi.
01:19:14He was back up to sixth place again.
01:19:16Obviously, he was going to have to do another stop for fuel,
01:19:18but that was a super drive leading up to then.
01:19:20Now, there's Eddie, and you can see David Coulthard behind,
01:19:23three and a half seconds behind,
01:19:24but really the time was gained
01:19:26because Coulthard was slightly held up by Mika Salo.
01:19:29But, uh, I think it's going to be pretty tough on David Coulthard
01:19:33if he doesn't win this race.
01:19:34I mean, he's going to get no change out of Eddie Irvine.
01:19:36He's going to have to drive his heart out.
01:19:38Eddie is not going to give him anything.
01:19:40The only way that I think he's going to get by Eddie
01:19:42is if there's a problem with the car,
01:19:43or Eddie just has to make a fine error,
01:19:45which can happen in the motor racing these days,
01:19:47particularly when your car isn't quite the match of the car behind.
01:19:50That is the McLaren,
01:19:51because the McLaren I consider to be the best car out there.
01:19:54And the only real big difference I've seen between the two,
01:19:57all weekend, is that the Ferrari has,
01:19:59the Ferraris have been bothered by brake lock-up,
01:20:02and it does not appear that the McLarens have been.
01:20:04And certainly the drivers have access to all of the notes that we get,
01:20:09and are doubtless aware of that potential problem for Irvine.
01:20:17So Eddie Irvine leads from David Coulthard here in the Austrian Grand Prix.
01:20:20A bizarre start to the day,
01:20:22and it looks like it's winding down for what could be a fantastic finish
01:20:25if the Ferrari and the McLaren do get in contact, or get close together.
01:20:30Well then you've got Mika Häkkinen,
01:20:31he's storming through the field still, working his way up through,
01:20:33but of course now,
01:20:35here's 3.7 gap between Irvine and Coulthard,
01:20:38it hasn't changed much that lap,
01:20:40so Eddie is managing to work it out.
01:20:42And then the gap from down to third place,
01:20:45so 15.5,
01:20:47so that's quite a lot,
01:20:48remember that's down to,
01:20:49here we come as Denise comes in,
01:20:51but that's 15 seconds,
01:20:52so he's about 17 seconds behind Eddie.
01:20:55And that's going to be difficult for him to make up that difference.
01:20:5852 laps complete,
01:20:59as Peter Leeds makes his second stop of the day,
01:21:02that is according to plan.
01:21:04This means there's about 19 laps to go,
01:21:07and Eddie should manage,
01:21:08should be able to keep everybody at bay.
01:21:12One just doesn't know how they treat this first half of the race,
01:21:15or the first section of the race,
01:21:16just how they take it,
01:21:18because sometimes they just pace themselves,
01:21:21get themselves in a fine groove,
01:21:22and they use the last part of the race as a sprint,
01:21:24when they know the car's, you know,
01:21:26hanging in there mechanically.
01:21:28And that seems to be the case,
01:21:29because Eddie certainly didn't shine in the first half.
01:21:31Rubens Barrichello sits fourth,
01:21:33Heinz-Harald Frentzen is fifth,
01:21:35Pedro Diniz was sixth when he made that pit stop,
01:21:38then the Benetims of Wurz and Fisichella,
01:21:41Jarno Trulli, Damon Hill,
01:21:43Zonta, Salo, Penice, Jeunet,
01:21:46and now out of race,
01:21:47Alessi, laps down,
01:21:50Luca Badour, and Johnny Herbert.
01:21:58As we see the Ferrari mechanics sitting there,
01:22:00you must just mention one little gem that we picked up this week,
01:22:04and that is that Michael Schumacher,
01:22:05as he lies in his bed,
01:22:07is earning $100,000 a day on his insurance.
01:22:11That's not on top of what he earns, I don't suppose.
01:22:13Who knows? I don't know.
01:22:14It's quite an earning,
01:22:15but then I don't know if I want my leg smashed
01:22:17for earning $100,000 a day.
01:22:20He'll make over $8 million from insurance proceeds
01:22:24sitting out the rest of the season.
01:22:25I'm sure he'd rather be here in Austria.
01:22:28Eddie Irvine, his Ferrari teammate,
01:22:30leads. We'll be right back.
01:22:34Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage
01:22:36of the Grand Prix of Austria.
01:22:37Eddie Irvine leading in Ferrari
01:22:39from David Coulthard's McLaren.
01:22:41Chris Myers hosts the show.
01:22:42The critics call this 60 minutes of sports TV.
01:22:44That's going deep, and it's Sundays at 9.
01:22:47On Fox Sportsnet, check your local listings.
01:22:51Well, Irvine, if he continues with this lead,
01:22:55can put nine points up for Ferrari.
01:23:01But McLaren, with the next two positions,
01:23:05would take the lead in the Manufacturer's Championship.
01:23:08Well, Ferrari obviously want that,
01:23:10and the thing that they wanted Salo in there for
01:23:12is to try and get the points,
01:23:13but unfortunately right now, he's not there.
01:23:14As you can see, there are the Constructors' points, Mike.
01:23:16Yeah, it's only a two-point advantage for Ferrari,
01:23:18and with Mika Salo losing a front wing
01:23:21in that lap one accident,
01:23:22they're only going to put one car in the points today, Max,
01:23:25whereas McLaren can score twice.
01:23:31And for drivers, well, Eddie Irvine,
01:23:34who came in tied for second
01:23:36with Michael Schumacher, who is out injured.
01:23:39Irvine can move right up on Mika Hakkinen,
01:23:44should things remain as they are,
01:23:46which, as we know, is unlikely.
01:23:49From the way they started,
01:23:51Irvine from third to first,
01:23:53Coulthard led the race, now second,
01:23:56Mika Hakkinen now third,
01:23:58Rubens Barrichello, Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
01:24:00and Alex Wurtz
01:24:02showing some of the promise we saw last season,
01:24:04where here in his home Grand Prix,
01:24:06he's moved up right now
01:24:08to hold the final point-paying position.
01:24:12Oh, and there's Barrichello out of race
01:24:15in a cloud of smoke.
01:24:17Yeah, that is their Series 3 Ford engine
01:24:21has quit after a very fine raceman
01:24:24from Barrichello debut for this modified engine.
01:24:27There it goes.
01:24:28Unfortunately, that was a sight we saw a lot of last year,
01:24:30and something very rare, thank goodness, this season.
01:24:33Very sad for the Stewart Ford team.
01:24:35Remember, Johnny Herbert is some way behind
01:24:37having had an involvement with Salo on the first lap,
01:24:39so the Ford's not doing terribly well at the moment,
01:24:42but nonetheless, a superb drive by Rubens Barrichello,
01:24:45who, as you heard earlier, is rumored to be going.
01:24:47And here we have a shot of, looks like,
01:24:49Fizzi Keller having a wild old time on the grass,
01:24:52but keeping it going.
01:24:53Good for you, Giancarlo.
01:24:55Got it back on course, but...
01:24:57Yeah, he lost it, of course,
01:24:58where I think it's where Michael Schumacher
01:25:00lost it last year, coming down the hill there.
01:25:06Eddie Irvine still on the road.
01:25:08He's got a lot of grass and a lot of dirt on those tires.
01:25:10Takes a lot of time to get it out of the grooves on the tires.
01:25:13Here we go. Let's watch him again.
01:25:15He goes out very...
01:25:16Oh, in fact, he goes out totally wide,
01:25:18straight across the sand, or the gravel trap.
01:25:22Now, there's the gravel trap working as intended, Derek.
01:25:25When a car goes at it at a sideways angle,
01:25:27it does scrub off a lot of speed,
01:25:29in contrast to Michael Schumacher two weeks ago in Britain.
01:25:32Since his car was not sideways at all,
01:25:35it was headed straight for the tire wall.
01:25:37He was unable to really scrub off much speed at all.
01:25:39Well, you can't scrub off the speed, Mike.
01:25:41As you know, the ground clearance is a couple of inches.
01:25:43And, of course, these cars hit that gravel,
01:25:45and they have a flat board underneath the car,
01:25:48and it's like a surfboard,
01:25:49and it just rides the gravel.
01:25:51And even if they raised the gravel bounds up,
01:25:55you know, to make it like a ploughed field,
01:25:57it would still launch the car.
01:25:59You've got to get that car sideways.
01:26:00And, in fact, the FIA have said that
01:26:02that escape area four that Michael went through
01:26:05at Stowe Corner was the ultimate in gravel traps.
01:26:08There was nothing more they could have done
01:26:09apart from elevate it.
01:26:11If they could angle it up,
01:26:12which Eddie Irvine and several drivers
01:26:13have been saying for a long time,
01:26:14make it an uphill so the car actually dives into it,
01:26:17might have slowed it down.
01:26:19But it would be interesting to see what,
01:26:21when we see what this new equipment
01:26:23they're going to use at Indy
01:26:25for the Formula One race next year,
01:26:27which has got a tremendous absorption to it.
01:26:30And I think you'll find some of the Formula One circuits
01:26:32will be using that.
01:26:33Yes, they've had very, very good success
01:26:35with the new interior turn four wall
01:26:38on the oval at Indianapolis.
01:26:39Also got a fax this week from Dr. Antonio Ferrari,
01:26:42whose company located in Indianapolis
01:26:44builds these type of barriers
01:26:45and has FIA approval for his product as well.
01:26:48Eddie Irvine's Ferrari has led 18 of the 58 laps so far,
01:26:52taking the lead from David Coulthard.
01:26:54Mika Hakkinen led at the start,
01:26:56not really considered an official lead
01:26:58as he did not come around and complete a lap
01:27:00in the first position,
01:27:01though he started from pole.
01:27:04They're having a real go, these two.
01:27:05I mean, they're not far apart, as you can see.
01:27:07The cars get between them all the time
01:27:09and this is when you're in the driver,
01:27:11you think, oh, just hold that guy up in front.
01:27:13I just need him to be held up a bit
01:27:14to let me capitalize a bit on it.
01:27:16And you can see Eddie is being held up here
01:27:18just very, very slightly.
01:27:22As they go through this long, fast left-hander,
01:27:24double left-hander,
01:27:25as they work their way through what is called
01:27:27the Niki Lauda curve.
01:27:29Mika Hakkinen, meanwhile, is some 16 seconds behind.
01:27:36What an outstanding drive by Mika Hakkinen,
01:27:38I have to say.
01:27:39He has done an amazing job.
01:27:42To come from the back and now find himself
01:27:44only 15 seconds off the lead
01:27:47after he was nearly a minute down
01:27:49early up is a tremendous ride.
01:27:52Now there's Zonta just ahead of the Ferrari.
01:27:54Well, David Coulthard,
01:27:56sorry, Mika Hakkinen, taking a look down the inside,
01:27:58but I was just about to say,
01:27:59he doesn't take any chances, Mika.
01:28:01He's been very sensible today.
01:28:03He could so easily have punted people off,
01:28:05but he does know he has the superior car,
01:28:07but he has to be so positive and clean,
01:28:09what he does.
01:28:10Now, Eddie really needs to get going
01:28:13through some of this traffic.
01:28:15He needs some really clean passing here
01:28:17as David's going to capitalize on it.
01:28:20See, David's got by the car behind,
01:28:21now Eddie's got behind,
01:28:22got to get past too,
01:28:23but I don't think he's done it as yet.
01:28:25And David just needs a bit of traffic
01:28:28to slow Eddie down,
01:28:29to give him that momentum,
01:28:30to let him go through,
01:28:31and David will be right behind Eddie,
01:28:33and we'll have a grandstand finish.
01:28:35Oh, yes.
01:28:37Well, Mika continues to do a tremendous job
01:28:39of carving his way up through
01:28:42and fighting through traffic.
01:28:44He is 13 seconds off of David Coulthard
01:28:47and 15 seconds off the lead.
01:28:49There's the pit board sign for Eddie Irvine,
01:28:511.8 seconds with one of the Jordans
01:28:53in between, not for long.
01:28:55Coulthard knits to the inside of Damon Hill
01:28:58and now has the Ferrari straight ahead.
01:29:00Well, of course,
01:29:01Damon doesn't get on that well with Eddie Irvine
01:29:03because Eddie's been a little outspoken
01:29:04about Damon's driving abilities,
01:29:06so I'm sure that Damon's only too pleased
01:29:08to let David by and have a go at Eddie.
01:29:11How galling, though.
01:29:12Sorry, Mike, but how galling.
01:29:14There's the gap between them,
01:29:15not much as you saw the last lap,
01:29:17but how galling there for Damon Hill to get lapped.
01:29:21This must again put into his mind,
01:29:22what am I doing up here?
01:29:24And Eddie Jordan, the team owner,
01:29:26not looking very happy either.
01:29:27Norbert Haug of Mercedes,
01:29:28studying the equipment just to see
01:29:30what is happening out there.
01:29:31Is there anything showing on the equipment
01:29:32in front of him that we don't know about out here?
01:29:35Well, Damon Hill has said,
01:29:36when the car is balanced,
01:29:37I can drive it as good as anyone here,
01:29:40and apparently today it is not.
01:29:42Here are the standings
01:29:43with 11 laps to go in Austria.
01:29:46Welcome back to the Grand Prix of Austria.
01:29:55Ten laps to go.
01:29:56Eddie Irvine trying to hold off David Coulthard,
01:29:59and Coulthard is closing right up
01:30:01on the tailpipes of the Ferrari.
01:30:03Jim Rome tells it like it is on the nightline
01:30:05of sports shows,
01:30:06the last word on Fox Sportsnet's weeknight,
01:30:096.30 p.m. and midnight.
01:30:12Things got a little dicey in traffic right there.
01:30:15Yeah, he's got Zonta right in front of Eddie.
01:30:17He's having a real job to get by Zonta.
01:30:21And there goes Coulthard,
01:30:23or rather Haakonen, through.
01:30:30Salo is not holding any of the guys up at all.
01:30:33And he doesn't get on very well
01:30:34with his countryman, Mika Haakonen.
01:30:37He still let him through rather easily, I thought.
01:30:40And now Coulthard has traffic
01:30:42to contend with once again.
01:30:43Yeah, he's going to get him
01:30:44along this straight, though.
01:30:45He's got to get him.
01:30:46Eddie's pulled it out a couple of three-tenths
01:30:48on that lap.
01:30:53Well, that's a little breathing room for Irvine.
01:30:55There's the gap, first to second.
01:31:02As you have a look at our season recap,
01:31:03we started the season in Australia,
01:31:05Eddie Irvine the winner there.
01:31:06He's been looking for win number two ever since.
01:31:09He could have so easily won the British Grand Prix
01:31:11if he hadn't overstepped to mark
01:31:12as he came in the pit lane.
01:31:13That's what cost him the victory, really.
01:31:15Because, as you well know,
01:31:16there's a rather reclining, cool lot
01:31:19of Jordan mechanics there.
01:31:21But that is the problem,
01:31:22is that once you get a guy ahead of you
01:31:23in the pit stop,
01:31:24it's very difficult to get by him
01:31:25if your cars are so evenly matched.
01:31:27See some of Schumacher's wins there.
01:31:29Haakonen back up atop the podium in Spain
01:31:32has put him up into the lead
01:31:34in the Drivers' Championship,
01:31:36a winner again in Canada.
01:31:40And now, working past clearing himself of Zonta
01:31:47and Coulthard, with the win in Great Britain,
01:31:50seven poles for Mika Haakonen,
01:31:52half of his career total coming this season.
01:31:55Let's ride with Frentzen.
01:31:56He is in fourth place.
01:32:06Did you notice just how smooth
01:32:08his hand was on that wheel?
01:32:09I mean, there was no kickback
01:32:11through that steering wheel at all.
01:32:12It was absolutely beautiful,
01:32:13the absorption they've got in that chassis.
01:32:16Alexander Wurz having a super run
01:32:18in his home country.
01:32:20That'll certainly be the best result
01:32:21he's had all year for the Benetton team.
01:32:23He's waiting to...
01:32:24They're asking him to sign,
01:32:25or they've offered him a contract
01:32:26for next year.
01:32:27He's waiting to see just what they're going to do
01:32:28as far as engines are concerned
01:32:30for next year
01:32:31and what their real, true commitment is.
01:32:32Because one has to admit,
01:32:33one does question their commitment at the moment.
01:32:36Now, Wurz's best of the season,
01:32:38a sixth-place finish in Monaco.
01:32:41Well down from where he sat
01:32:42at this time last year.
01:32:45Well, he didn't...
01:32:46He didn't...
01:32:47You know, he qualified well,
01:32:48then had a bad start,
01:32:49so he's done exceptionally well.
01:32:51Quick look at the points show
01:32:52that if Irvine wins,
01:32:53and I earlier said nine points.
01:32:55Of course, I'm a decade or two behind.
01:32:56It's ten points for the victory.
01:32:58Six and four for second and third
01:33:00for McLaren and Ferrari
01:33:01would leave Austria
01:33:03still with a tenuous two-point lead
01:33:06in the Constructors' Championship.
01:33:09And, of course, there's seven laps to go,
01:33:11but then we've got Hockenheim next week,
01:33:13which is a power circuit.
01:33:15And that's where the cars with great power
01:33:18and something like the McLaren
01:33:19that can run low downforce
01:33:21and still get tremendous grip.
01:33:22And that's what we'll have to see
01:33:24whether Ferrari can really do...
01:33:25can perform well there as well.
01:33:27Well, it's a little different also
01:33:29in that Hockenheim follows this race
01:33:31by only one week
01:33:32instead of the traditional two weeks off.
01:33:35Peter, what will that mean to these teams?
01:33:38Well, this really is the first part
01:33:40of a doubleheader.
01:33:41We have the Austrian Grand Prix
01:33:42followed immediately next week
01:33:44by the German Grand Prix.
01:33:45For the teams,
01:33:46it's a very, very difficult time.
01:33:48Not only have we had the travel to Canada
01:33:51and the British Grand Prix,
01:33:52but now they really have to focus
01:33:54on getting preparation
01:33:55for the German Grand Prix
01:33:56immediately after this race.
01:33:58The cars will be trucked,
01:33:59sent to Germany,
01:34:00and then rebuilds will begin
01:34:02on Tuesday and Wednesday
01:34:03ready for final tuning on Thursday.
01:34:06Difficult time.
01:34:07And, of course, the top teams
01:34:08at the same moment
01:34:09are developing and testing.
01:34:11This really is the vortex
01:34:12of the European Grand Prix season,
01:34:14and it brings the best out
01:34:15in the strategists and in the management.
01:34:19And as this race closes down
01:34:20into its final half-dozen laps,
01:34:22the two most motivated drivers
01:34:24in Formula One...
01:34:25Zonta.
01:34:26Yes.
01:34:27He's not one of them.
01:34:28Eddie Irvine,
01:34:30who says he's as good as Michael Schumacher
01:34:32and today has a chance to prove it.
01:34:34And David Coulthard,
01:34:35who says he's the equal of Mika Häkkinen
01:34:37and again today has the opportunity
01:34:40if he can overtake Irvine
01:34:42and perhaps somewhat atone
01:34:44for the collision with Mika Häkkinen
01:34:46at the start.
01:34:48So two very motivated drivers,
01:34:50and they are just car lengths apart
01:34:52with six laps to go.
01:34:53And, of course, Eddie has also commented
01:34:55that he's quicker than David Coulthard.
01:34:57So he's made a lot of predictions
01:34:59before this race,
01:35:00but a winner's a winner
01:35:01at the end of it.
01:35:02He's not there yet.
01:35:03Still five laps and a bit to go,
01:35:04but D.C. has got a lot to make up for
01:35:07when he gets into the press conference.
01:35:09It's going to be intriguing to see
01:35:10what he says sitting next to Mika,
01:35:12having put Mika out of the way.
01:35:13Irvine qualified nine-tenths of a second
01:35:15behind Coulthard.
01:35:18What have they changed since?
01:35:20And does Irvine have enough
01:35:21to hold off the McLaren?
01:35:23We'll come back and find out.
01:35:25In the Grand Prix of Austria,
01:35:26you're watching Formula One
01:35:28on Fox Sportsnet.
01:35:32Welcome back to the Grand Prix of Austria,
01:35:36where David Coulthard
01:35:37has eaten a couple more tenths
01:35:39from the lead of Eddie Irvine.
01:35:41It's now 1.1 seconds
01:35:42from the red Ferrari left of your screen
01:35:44to that silver McLaren Mercedes.
01:35:46But a good piece of work here,
01:35:47in fact, by Fizzi Keller.
01:35:48He just holds off on the braking
01:35:50and lets Eddie go through
01:35:51at the end of the straight.
01:35:52Very, very good,
01:35:53because Eddie was quite a way behind
01:35:54as they entered the straightaway,
01:35:56and now he's let David Coulthard go by.
01:35:58Coulthard's coming up the hill
01:35:59into Kastriker.
01:36:00Five laps to go,
01:36:01and it's heating up
01:36:02into quite a dramatic finish,
01:36:04one has to admit.
01:36:05David Coulthard will be giving,
01:36:06I think, remember,
01:36:07this is a reversal of roles
01:36:08that we saw two weeks ago
01:36:09at the British Grand Prix.
01:36:10Now, for Fizzi Keller to do that,
01:36:11that was quite a sportsmanlike gesture
01:36:13in that he is only seven points back
01:36:15of Pedro Diniz for the final point
01:36:18for sixth place.
01:36:19And yet, Fizzi came all the way down
01:36:20that straightaway
01:36:21with his eye in the mirrors
01:36:22looking for Eddie
01:36:23and giving him room
01:36:24when he could have been
01:36:26in chase of Pedro Diniz.
01:36:28Well, it does help
01:36:29having that red car, you know.
01:36:30That red car does stick in your mirrors.
01:36:32I think if police had red cars,
01:36:34we might go slower on the highway.
01:36:39They are very close.
01:36:40Eight tenths of a second.
01:36:41Three tenths less
01:36:42than they were last time around.
01:36:44Eddie's really going to have
01:36:45to work it out now.
01:36:46Of course, here,
01:36:47you don't count in tenths,
01:36:48you just count car lengths.
01:36:51Now, we did see just before break
01:36:52a little bit of brake lockup
01:36:54on the front tires
01:36:55of David Coulthard,
01:36:56and as you've said,
01:36:57the drivers can't adjust
01:36:58their brake modulation
01:36:59front to rear.
01:37:01Well, they sometimes have to do it,
01:37:02or they say sometimes,
01:37:03they always have to do it
01:37:04as they get a lighter fuel load.
01:37:06And the weight has moved around
01:37:08the car a bit,
01:37:09so they have to balance out the brakes.
01:37:11David possibly just had it done
01:37:12a bit too much
01:37:13one way or the other,
01:37:14but I better put a bit more
01:37:15to the rear for this one.
01:37:16But, of course,
01:37:17they are coming down into,
01:37:18they're dropping into
01:37:19very cambered corners.
01:37:21They brake so late
01:37:22that it's so easy
01:37:23to get a lighter wheel
01:37:24as you turn into a corner.
01:37:27Coulthard got a good run
01:37:28down that straightaway,
01:37:29narrowed the gap.
01:37:30You see Irvine pull it out,
01:37:31exiting the corner,
01:37:32and Coulthard tighten it up,
01:37:34entering the corner.
01:37:37This is quite amazing
01:37:38that you're getting these two
01:37:39at it again
01:37:40at the end of the next
01:37:41following Grand Prix
01:37:42after the British.
01:37:43And these two have had
01:37:44such a, sort of,
01:37:45not a poor season.
01:37:46David particularly has had
01:37:47not a happy season so far,
01:37:48and then this great win
01:37:49at the British Grand Prix
01:37:50brings him up.
01:37:52Now, just get that one, Eddie.
01:37:53I'm sure Eddie doesn't need
01:37:54to be told.
01:37:55No.
01:37:56It's nice to know
01:37:57how many laps to go.
01:37:58You just can't wait
01:37:59until it says L1.
01:38:00Right.
01:38:02Well, it says,
01:38:03in some boxing matches,
01:38:04Derek, often the undercard
01:38:05is more exciting
01:38:06than the title bout.
01:38:08Here are the drivers
01:38:09who a good case
01:38:10can be made
01:38:11for their being number two
01:38:12for their respective teams.
01:38:13Irvine number two
01:38:14to Schumacher.
01:38:15Coulthard number two
01:38:16to world champion HÃ¥konen.
01:38:17And here they are
01:38:18battling it out
01:38:19for the win,
01:38:20and each with a lot to prove.
01:38:21Absolutely.
01:38:22I'm surprised.
01:38:23I didn't think the race
01:38:24would turn out this way,
01:38:25so here's a shot
01:38:26of Eddie as he turns in.
01:38:31He doesn't go up on the kerb
01:38:32very much at all.
01:38:33You can really use the kerb.
01:38:34You might see Coulthard
01:38:35using a lot more of the kerb
01:38:36getting on the top of it.
01:38:37He gets the tail moving
01:38:38as well on that,
01:38:39but he does give you
01:38:40that trajectory
01:38:41out of the corner.
01:38:42But I didn't think this race
01:38:43would end up like this, Eddie.
01:38:44I didn't think it was running
01:38:45particularly well
01:38:46in that first portion
01:38:47of the race.
01:38:48Well, he's risen to the challenge.
01:38:49What I see, Derek,
01:38:50is Irvine getting a better launch
01:38:51off the corner,
01:38:52and Coulthard driving
01:38:53way in deeper
01:38:54at the end of these straightaways.
01:38:56Yes, well, I think
01:38:57we've already said
01:38:58that McLaren appears
01:38:59to have better brakes
01:39:00than anything else out there,
01:39:01and they seem to have
01:39:02more stability at that point.
01:39:03But, you know,
01:39:04you've got to carry the speed
01:39:05all the way through the corner,
01:39:06and if you go in too deep
01:39:07like that,
01:39:08it means you possibly
01:39:09don't pick it up
01:39:10on the power
01:39:11as you come out
01:39:12from the middle of that corner.
01:39:13Ron Dennis,
01:39:14the head man
01:39:15or the top manager
01:39:16or the managing director
01:39:17of McLaren.
01:39:20Well, we saw this late braking
01:39:21earlier with HÃ¥konen,
01:39:22and now we're seeing it
01:39:23with David Coulthard,
01:39:24the tremendous end
01:39:26of straightaway potential.
01:39:27Oh, and he locked it up.
01:39:29That would have lost him
01:39:30some time coming in there.
01:39:32David Coulthard
01:39:33just turned his personal
01:39:34fastest lap of the race,
01:39:35a minute 12.941.
01:39:40Mika Salo,
01:39:41Irvine's teammate,
01:39:42back in 10th place.
01:39:43He had to stop to repair
01:39:44or replace the front wing
01:39:45after that lap 1 accident.
01:39:48Mika HÃ¥konen
01:39:49is in fact
01:39:5019 seconds behind.
01:39:51He's making no impact
01:39:52on these two at all.
01:39:53He's probably settled
01:39:54for the fact that he's not
01:39:55going to do much about it
01:39:56in these dying laps.
01:39:57So consequently,
01:39:58he's backed out,
01:39:59and he's...
01:40:00It's the same gap he had
01:40:01after the pit stop
01:40:02in 19 seconds.
01:40:03Friends in 6 seconds
01:40:04behind him.
01:40:05Oh, this...
01:40:06That's like
01:40:07Fisichella's engine's gone.
01:40:08Look at that.
01:40:09Whoops.
01:40:10Time to get out
01:40:11of that Renault boy.
01:40:12So Fisichella
01:40:13was 7th
01:40:14and now out of a race.
01:40:15He's out in a hurry,
01:40:16and he's still got flames
01:40:17leaking out of the exhaust.
01:40:18That did go off
01:40:19with a big bang
01:40:20very quickly.
01:40:21All right, Derek.
01:40:22Last lap.
01:40:23Last chance for David Coulthard
01:40:24to snatch this victory
01:40:25and save some pride
01:40:26for himself
01:40:27and McLaren Mercedes
01:40:28at the hands of Eddie Irvine.
01:40:29Well, it's not just
01:40:30the straight-out racers
01:40:31we can see.
01:40:32It's not the racers you see.
01:40:33The fact is that David
01:40:34took out Mika Häkkinen
01:40:35on the first lap,
01:40:36and that is pretty
01:40:37unforgivable within teams.
01:40:38Not the thing
01:40:39you're meant to do,
01:40:40and so he's on a
01:40:41hiding-to-nothing
01:40:42over this anyway.
01:40:43Even if he won,
01:40:44he was still going to get
01:40:45a bashing from the team.
01:40:46I'm sure Mika won't be laughing
01:40:47at the press conference,
01:40:48but who knows?
01:40:49You know, Mika is still
01:40:50doing well in the championship
01:40:51and a long way to go.
01:40:54So it could be
01:40:55a flip-flop
01:40:56of the finish two weeks ago.
01:40:57Well, somebody's
01:40:58gone off straight.
01:40:59When was that?
01:41:00Never saw that one going.
01:41:01Was that Fizzi?
01:41:02Oh, it might have been
01:41:03Fizzi Kellers.
01:41:04It looked like
01:41:05the run up against the fence.
01:41:06I didn't see yellow flags either.
01:41:08So here's Coulthard
01:41:09just two car lengths
01:41:10off the lead,
01:41:11off ten championship points,
01:41:13and salvaging
01:41:14what started out
01:41:15as a very bad day,
01:41:16but Eddie Irvine's
01:41:17going to make that Ferrari
01:41:18just as wide
01:41:19as he possibly can.
01:41:20Yeah, well, it's just
01:41:21a double turn to come now.
01:41:22It's not going to be easy.
01:41:23This is where Michael
01:41:24went off last year,
01:41:25but Eddie's still got it
01:41:26as they come down the hill.
01:41:27Last turn, last chance
01:41:28as he goes that wide.
01:41:29David could get it,
01:41:30but he's not going to get it.
01:41:31It's going to be
01:41:32Eddie Irvine wins
01:41:33his second Grand Prix.
01:41:34Outstanding
01:41:35bit of driving by them both.
01:41:36By just
01:41:37the measure
01:41:38of two car lengths,
01:41:39Eddie Irvine
01:41:40has won
01:41:41his second Grand Prix
01:41:42of 1999
01:41:43here in Austria.
01:41:44To go with his win
01:41:45in Australia,
01:41:46David Coulthard
01:41:47will have to
01:41:49answer to Ron Dennis,
01:41:50Norbert Haug,
01:41:51and to this man,
01:41:52Mika Hakkinen,
01:41:53who started the race
01:41:54from the pole,
01:41:55got turned around
01:41:56at turn two
01:41:57of the first lap
01:41:58and finishes third.
01:42:02So Irvine
01:42:03will gain
01:42:04four points.
01:42:05Here is Frentzen
01:42:06coming around
01:42:07in fourth place.
01:42:13Absolutely superb
01:42:14season for Einstein
01:42:15and Frentzen.
01:42:16I'm sure that
01:42:17Eddie Irvine
01:42:18would like to be
01:42:19up on the podium,
01:42:20but an outstanding
01:42:21drive of the team.
01:42:22I'm surprised they weren't
01:42:23actually a little bit
01:42:24more competitive here.
01:42:25What a wonderful sight.
01:42:26Checkered flag,
01:42:27yet another Grand Prix
01:42:28under the belt.
01:42:29Super piece of work.
01:42:30And look at Wurz,
01:42:31Alexander Wurz,
01:42:32in front of his
01:42:33home crowd.
01:42:34Yes, Wurz will get
01:42:35two points in his
01:42:36home Grand Prix
01:42:37and his best finish
01:42:38of the season,
01:42:39fifth place
01:42:40for Alexander Wurz.
01:42:41And Pedro Diniz
01:42:42is going to come up
01:42:43and get a point
01:42:44for Sauber
01:42:45as well.
01:42:46He'll be the
01:42:47sixth place car.
01:42:48Jarno Trulli
01:42:49will finish seventh.
01:42:50Damon Hill,
01:42:51Mika Salo,
01:42:52all a lap back.
01:42:53Olivier Penney,
01:42:54Marc Genet,
01:42:55then Luca Badour
01:42:56and Johnny Herber.
01:42:58And unfortunate,
01:42:59of course,
01:43:00Mika Salo's
01:43:01a little bit
01:43:02in extra exuberance
01:43:03or that shambles
01:43:04at the start
01:43:05or soon after the start,
01:43:06of course,
01:43:07has cost him some points
01:43:08as well,
01:43:09which Ferrari
01:43:10greatly needed
01:43:11in this race.
01:43:12But, of course,
01:43:13Ferrari probably
01:43:14wouldn't have won the race
01:43:15if it hadn't been
01:43:16for Mika Salo.
01:43:17And, of course,
01:43:18Mika Salo
01:43:19is going to be
01:43:20the fifth place car
01:43:21in this season.
01:43:22And, of course,
01:43:23Mika Salo
01:43:24is going to be
01:43:25the fifth place car
01:43:26in this season.
01:43:27And, of course,
01:43:28Mika Salo
01:43:29is going to be
01:43:30the fifth place car
01:43:31in this season.
01:43:32And, of course,
01:43:33Mika Salo
01:43:34is going to be
01:43:35the fifth place car
01:43:36in this season.
01:43:37And, of course,
01:43:38Mika Salo
01:43:39is going to be
01:43:40the fifth place car
01:43:41in this season.
01:43:42And, of course,
01:43:43Mika Salo
01:43:44is going to be
01:43:45the fifth place car
01:43:46in this season.
01:43:47And, of course,
01:43:48Mika Salo
01:43:49is going to be
01:43:50the fifth place car
01:43:51in this season.
01:43:52And, of course,
01:43:53Mika Salo
01:43:54is going to be
01:43:55the fifth place car
01:43:56in this season.
01:43:57And, of course,
01:43:58Mika Salo
01:43:59is going to be
01:44:00the fifth place car
01:44:01in this season.
01:44:02And, of course,
01:44:03Mika Salo
01:44:04is going to be
01:44:05the fifth place car
01:44:06in this season.
01:44:07And, of course,
01:44:08Mika Salo
01:44:09is going to be
01:44:10the fifth place car
01:44:11in this season.
01:44:12And, of course,
01:44:13Mika Salo
01:44:14is going to be
01:44:15the fifth place car
01:44:16in this season.
01:44:17And, of course,
01:44:18Mika Salo
01:44:19is going to be
01:44:20the fifth place car
01:44:21in this season.
01:44:22And, of course,
01:44:23Mika Salo
01:44:24is going to be
01:44:25the fifth place car
01:44:26in this season.
01:44:27And, of course,
01:44:28Mika Salo
01:44:29is going to be
01:44:30the fifth place car
01:44:31in this season.
01:44:32And, of course,
01:44:33Mika Salo
01:44:34is going to be
01:44:35the fifth place car
01:44:36in this season.
01:44:37And, of course,
01:44:38Mika Salo
01:44:39is going to be
01:44:40the fifth place car
01:44:41in this season.
01:44:42And, of course,
01:44:43Mika Salo
01:44:44is going to be
01:44:45the fifth place car
01:44:46in this season.
01:44:47And, of course,
01:44:48Mika Salo
01:44:49is going to be
01:44:50the fifth place car
01:44:51in this season.
01:44:52And, of course,
01:44:53Mika Salo
01:44:54is going to be
01:44:55the fifth place car
01:44:56in this season.
01:44:57And, of course,
01:44:58Mika Salo
01:44:59is going to be
01:45:00the fifth place car
01:45:01in this season.
01:45:02And, of course,
01:45:03Mika Salo
01:45:04is going to be
01:45:05the fifth place car
01:45:06in this season.
01:45:07And, of course,
01:45:08Mika Salo
01:45:09is going to be
01:45:10the fifth place car
01:45:11in this season.
01:45:12And, of course,
01:45:13Mika Salo
01:45:14is going to be
