00:00Social media influencer Siew Pui-yi has won a legal victory against her former business
00:08partner Lai Kai-jen after he failed to appear in court.
00:12The Georgetown High Court awarded Siew 4.3 million ringgit, which she claimed Lai, also
00:17known as Mentos, had fraudulently obtained under the guise of settling her tax arrears.
00:22Siew accused Lai of absconding with the funds meant for the Inland Revenue Board, leading
00:27to a travel ban that caused her to miss four events in Australia.
00:31Her lawyer, Kay Mahendran, said the terms of settlement remained confidential per LHDN's
00:36advice and Lai's whereabouts are still unknown.
00:39The judgment in favor of Siew includes the full amount claimed, interest, and legal costs,
00:44with the suit being served at Lai's last known address and advertised in newspapers.
00:49Siew's ordeal began when she was detained at KLIA on December 30, 2023, for unpaid taxes,
00:56claiming the incident had tarnished her reputation.
00:59She had provided Lai with the money in installments, believing he would clear her arrears, only
01:03to find out her tax debt remained unpaid.
