00:00A consumer group has called for stringent action against Air Selangor following the
00:06recent unscheduled water disruptions in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor due to water pollution
00:11at two rivers.
00:13Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association's President Marimuthu Nadesan slammed the National
00:18Water Services Commission for not holding Air Selangor accountable, which he said led
00:23to their lack of caution and urgency.
00:26He said SPAN must fine Air Selangor so that they will be more cautious as the water operators
00:31are taking their own sweet time to fix things.
00:34Marimuthu said even though water disruptions had been happening for the past 20 years,
00:39SPAN lacked serious contingency plans, especially for hospitals and schools.
00:44He said Air Selangor should invest a portion of its profits into contingency planning rather
00:49than relying solely on water tankers during disruptions.
00:53Marimuthu also advocated for deploying the latest technology along major rivers to detect
00:57and contain pollution early, thus preventing water cuts.
01:02He said it was time the government followed a compensation model similar to the UK's
01:06where consumers are compensated if water is unavailable for more than 24 or 48 hours.
