Rounds of thunderstorms push through the Northeast ahead of heat relief

Thunderstorms rumbled across the Northeast with heavy rain and roaring thunder on July 17.

00:00Our top story is the severe weather threat here in the Northeast once again this evening.

00:04Now check out the lightning strike and the the thunder that followed shortly thereafter

00:09caught on video here in Ridgefield, Connecticut a little bit earlier on.

00:14Lots of electrical energy going on. Let's take you out live to Worcester, Massachusetts. We

00:18had that thunderstorm roll its way especially just on the north side of the city here recently

00:24and that had the potential with the damaging winds. We're gonna take us back northbound

00:28to start things out there in and around Worcester and we'll bring up the Boston,

00:33Massachusetts radar. That thunderstorm has now since departed off toward the east but

00:37still packing quite a bit of potency here as we're looking at Middlesex County until 7 30.

00:43A severe thunderstorm warning also for Worcester County, Massachusetts

00:46until 7 30. So until the bottom of the hour here still looking at that potential to see

00:52some very high winds. These thunderstorms having a history of producing a lot of damaging winds

00:57back over western Massachusetts especially from Pittsfield on east towards Springfield.

01:03Again many reports of downed trees and also some downed power lines resulting of course in the

01:08loss of power and a lot of lightning going on here too. There's going to be some extremely

01:12heavy rain coming into the north side of Boston here shortly now really within the next 30 to 45

01:18minutes. All right we're gonna take off all those reports to clean it up here a little bit and we'll

01:22get a little better visibility here further off toward the south. We're following additional

01:26thunderstorms right now as they press their way toward New York City. We had one round roll

01:31north of the city recently. Wow look at that low visibility there in the video. Looking at

01:36severe thunderstorm warnings out for Monroe County, Pennsylvania and Pike County, Pennsylvania

01:41until 7 15. And I'll take a look at the storm hazards here but primarily looking at damaging

01:46winds. This would show you the hail product as well as some extremely high amounts of shear

01:52but primarily looking at damaging winds. If anything perhaps some small hail pea size the

01:58penny size going to be a possibility. Points on up toward the south we go closer to our nation's

02:03capital and here too we've been following thunderstorms as they slide their way now east

02:08of Baltimore. Baltimore City still under a flash flood warning. We've got another potent thunderstorm

02:13making its way through with a lot of rainfall. We go out of Fairfax here. This is just now starting

02:18to exit the city off to the east. Charlottesville another area that saw the heavy rain a little bit

02:23earlier on this evening but I'm curious here I'm going to see how much rain we've seen in and around

02:28Baltimore. And here on the east side of the city we've seen some high totals. In fact look at this

02:32some spots looking at 2.6 to 3 inches of rain. Much of that happening within a 60 to 90 minute

02:39time frame. So again that's definitely going to be enough to a prompt again some flash flooding. So

02:46we do have that flash flood warning out there for the city of Baltimore. Also looking at severe

02:50thunderstorms off to the south and the west. All the way south toward Halifax County Virginia

02:55and here north of Richmond towards St. Mary's County Maryland. Let's take a look here at future

03:00radars. We'll work our way throughout the next couple of hours. We'll take those storms all the

03:04way to the coast but back behind there's the relief waiting in the wings with those northwesterly winds

03:10around Buffalo and Detroit. And that's going to usher in a completely different air mass as we

03:16head our way into Thursday. So in the short term still following the storms as you can see there

03:21on the right hand portion of your screen throughout New York State. And looking at the moderate risk

03:26implying numerous severe thunderstorms. And then back behind the front we'll start to experience

03:31the change. Still looking at power outages. That's a big story here throughout Pennsylvania

03:36as well as New York. The numbers here are dropping as those thunderstorms slide a little

03:41further east. But I wouldn't be surprised to see some higher numbers coming out in New Jersey

03:45and Massachusetts. Perhaps even Vermont as we go a little bit deeper into this evening. Before the

03:50front finally clears and the skies clear and the temperatures start to go down. Look at that.

03:57Buffalo 61. Detroit 59 in the city tonight. Outlying areas along Interstate 75. Could see

04:04some of those numbers down into the mid 50s. That's going to be spectacular weather for getting

04:08outside. Low humidity. Lots of sunshine. Not too hot. More like June if anything. But the southeast

04:15will remain quite stormy. So we'll be following those storms on a daily basis.
