00:00It has been a decade since MH17 was shot down by a missile while flying over Ukraine to
00:06Kuala Lumpur.
00:08All 298 people on board the plane perished in the incident, including pilot Eugene Chu
00:13Jin-Leong.
00:15Despite the tragedy and loss suffered by Eugene's family, his two sons, Melvick and Scott, decided
00:20to follow in their father's footsteps and go into aviation.
00:25Melvick is a pilot with AirAsia, while his brother Scott just completed his aeronautical
00:29engineering degree in the UK and has applied to Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia to join their
00:34flying programs.
00:36Melvick, who got his wings two years ago, said his father would come to mind when flying,
00:41which only makes him braver as he knows his father would be proud.
00:45Their mother, Ivy Loy, is often asked about her two sons' decision, but she brushes
00:50it off as a good way for the boys to remember their father, adding that they have her full
00:55blessing.
00:56Loy, who met her late husband while she was a Malaysia Airlines cabin crew member, recalled
01:01feeling numb and lost when she was told Eugene had died that fateful day on July 17, 2014.
01:08But she said she persevered with the help of friends and family, especially her sons.
01:13As a tribute to those who perished in the MH17 tragedy, the 10th anniversary commemoration
01:18will be held at the MH17 National Monument near Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.
