00:00A lesson in breaking barriers for these students at Perth's Presbyterian Ladies College.
00:07So we discovered that those stereotypes were assumptions about groups, about race and gender
00:11and things like that and that they're negative, they're designed to pull us down and we know
00:14that they're not true.
00:15And permission to dream, big.
00:17But no limitations, if you could do anything what would you do?
00:21I'm going to be an actor.
00:23I want to get into the AFW but if that doesn't work out I want to be, like start a mentor
00:28program for like little Indigenous communities.
00:34The Deadly Dreaming workshops are the brainchild of Shana Walley, who first turned up to the
00:39Kool Barty Aboriginal Centre 16 years ago for a bridging course and pretty much hasn't
00:44left since.
00:45The premise is simple.
00:47Let's go out to the kids and have conversations about racism.
00:50Let's teach them about the success of our story and the strength of Aboriginal Australia
00:55rather than this constant deficit story and these stereotypes that they're having to
00:58put up with all the time.
01:00Its impact could lead to lifelong change.
01:03Open the door for them to see that there are Aboriginal people who've been to university.
01:07You know, there are Aboriginal people who are scientists and lawyers and doctors.
01:11I'm the first one to go to uni in my family and then be the first one to get through,
01:15sort of set that pathway, if you will, for my little sister and such to come through
01:21and see that she can go to uni.
01:23There are those involved eager to see the program expand across the state and the country.
01:28To grow this program, we need more schools on board and we need more schools leaning
01:32into the conversation.
01:33These workshops are free.
01:35The schools do not have to pay for them at this stage.
01:37So more Aboriginal students can harness their education.
01:41I think I can do anything with my future.
01:43And aspire to be deadly.
