Homeschooling continues to grow in popularity since the pandemic, with community members saying there's been a boom in what's known as "drop-off groups". These all-day programs free-up homeschooling parents for work, but some education experts warn it's an increasingly unregulated space.

00:00On a sunny property in South East Queensland, class is in session.
00:07A game that you're good at. Were you good at it the very first time that you played it?
00:12This is Project School. Homeschool kids come here to learn practical life skills and socialise.
00:18I have like great friends and it's just so healthy, like there's no bullying.
00:22This program is known as a drop-off group. It operates three days a week from 9 to 2.30.
00:28We can drop off and go to work or we can drop off and they know that they're going to be with their friends.
00:32And they get that social aspect as well as the education and the life skills as well.
00:36Parents and providers say while these groups are booming, it's still a relatively unregulated space.
00:41Everyone needs to ensure that any program that they send their child to, that they're going to have full insurance,
00:48that there's blue cards, that they're operating within a system where you know your child is protected.
00:54Education experts say COVID has sparked this growing market in support services.
00:59And it would be wonderful, I think, if the government came out and provided more advice and clarity for parents,
01:04but also for those service providers who are genuinely just trying to provide a service that parents are really looking for.
01:10The Queensland government says these kinds of groups fall outside the state's Education Act
01:15and registered homeschooling parents are free to access any support they need.
01:19Experts, however, say there's a lack of clarity around the legal responsibilities of these services.
