00:00My first thought was that maybe this one will do a clean-up of the first one.
00:07It seems to be gathering some speed, so hopefully we won't have too much damage.
00:14But yeah, I don't think this has happened ever in the history of Jadagen.
00:19So it's interesting to be here for it.
00:23Yeah, and so what was it like going through that last one that blew through?
00:27How strong was it?
00:30It was a Category 3.
00:32The first part of the cyclone was fairly scary,
00:36and the last part of the cyclone when the eye passed was a lot more terrifying.
00:43So this one's likely to be a Category 2.
00:46So hopefully it'll be a little bit less terrifying than what the first one was.
00:51Yeah, and so with Hayley, the eye actually passed directly over.
00:54You did it and you kind of experienced that period of calm before the winds came from the other direction?
01:01Yeah, the actual eye I think was about 10km south.
01:06But yeah, we did experience the actual calmness as the second wave came.
01:12But yeah, it was fairly terrifying.
01:14And what was the extent of the damage from Hayley?
01:17There wasn't a lot of structural damage in the community.
01:21We had some roofs fly off and some flashings and some side walls that disappeared.
01:26But most of the damage was from trees.
01:28So a lot of old trees have come down.
01:31A lot of the gum trees have come down.
01:33So we've had a lot of contractors out here in the last two weeks cleaning up all of that debris.
01:39We've still got a lot of debris around the community.
01:42Because as you can gather, most trees would have come down in people's yards.
01:47And we've got different departments that look after different things.
01:50So you've got to actually work through all of that sort of stuff to make things work.
01:54So yeah, we've still got a fair bit of damage around the community.
01:58So hopefully, it's not going to be too much of an issue with that stuff flying around.
02:04Yeah, yeah.
02:05Are you a bit concerned about that with this next cyclone coming through and a bit of debris still around?
02:11I am a little bit concerned about it.
02:14I mean, just behind us, we've got our workshop and just in the last couple of days,
02:20we've had some windstorms and it's ripped up the roofing iron on the workshop.
02:25So I know that's going to fly off in the next 12 to 24 hours.
02:29Yeah.
02:30And Nathan, what happened with the last one that came through, Hayley?
02:33Did it, it actually, they were kind of predicting it was going to be a one or a two,
02:37but then it kind of jumped up to a three within the last couple of hours.
02:41Is that how it worked?
02:43Yeah, I think it was doing about 12Ks an hour and then it sped up to 24, 25.
02:48Then it hit a category three.
02:51So yeah, it took us a little bit off guard.
02:54But I mean, we already know living in the tropics that these types of storms can be very unpredictable.
02:59Yeah, yeah.
03:00And so what's your, how are locals preparing for this and what's your advice to locals?
03:05The advice for all locals is like any other time we've got cyclones is that they need to prepare,
03:12need to make sure they've got batteries and food and water, everything ready for them if they need to use that.
03:19Yeah.
03:20They've also been told that there's a bus that's prepared to take people into Broome to the evac centre.
03:26So that'll be here in a couple of hours.
03:29So hopefully that'll be able to move some folks from Juddagen and also One Arm Point back into Broome.
03:36And how did you go with power and water after Hayley blew through?
03:41Water was fine.
03:43There were some residents after Hayley that lost power and that was due to trees falling down on their service lines
03:49and a couple of overhead power lines that got knocked over by falling trees.
03:53Horizon Power was out that morning and was able to restore power to the households that had lost power from the main lines.
04:03The power to houses, that's through Department of Communities and Department of Housing.
04:09So there was a few days before we could actually get power restored to some of those houses.
04:14But yeah, by and large, we were very fortunate through Hayley.
04:19We didn't lose the water and we didn't lose main power.
04:22Yeah.
04:23Okay, Nathan.
04:24Well, good luck with this one coming through.
04:25Hopefully it just stays a low pressure system and doesn't generate much trouble for you there in Juddagen.
04:32And thanks so much for having a chat to us.
04:35No worries.
